Austin Psych Fest 2014 (more by Tim Griffin)
APF

The annual Austin Psych Fest, which they've renamed "Austin Psych Fest presents Levitation" (more on that below), happens this year from May 8-10 at the Carson Creek Ranch. The initial lineup was just revealed and it's looking pretty crazy. There's The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, The Jesus and Mary Chain (performing Psychocandy), Spiritualized, Primal Scream, The Black Angels, Thee Oh Sees, Mac DeMarco, Melody's Echo Chamber, Lightning Bolt, The Sword, Earth, A Place to Bury Strangers, Fuzz, The Soft Moon, Metz, White Fence, Fat White Family, Nothing and still plenty more. Weekend passes are on sale now and check out the full initial lineup below.

As for the name change of the fest to Levitation:

Over the years, countless other "psych fest" events have popped up around the globe - music communities all over the world are gathering together and celebrating music and art together. This is an amazing thing and we are proud to be a part of it.

In 2015 we are redefining what we're doing with a renewed focus on the music we love, and to mark that change the festival is taking on a new name: LEVITATION. The title comes from one of our favorite tracks from Austin legends The 13th Floor Elevators, who have provided us with endless inspiration. Their music and message transcended genre - they were true innovators.

The APF folks have been doing a sister festival in France called "Levitation" since 2013.

Lineup, poster and announcement video for Austin Psych Fest presents Levitation, below...

Happy Jawbone Family Band
Happy Jawbone

Mexican Summer's 5th Anniversary celebration is this weekend (October 11 & 12) happening at Pioneer Works in Red Hook. The shows will happen inside and outdoors and Friday (10/11) features Ariel Pink, Tamaryn, The Fresh & Onlys, Mike Wexler, Bobb Trimble's Flying Spiders, and Home Blitz; Saturday (10/12) has Spiritualized, No Joy, Connan Mockasin (first US show), a reunited Lansing-Dreiden, Co-La, Lilacs & Champagne, Happy Jawbone Family Band, folk cult hero Linda Perhacs (first NY show), Quilt, Weyes Blood and Soldiers of Fortune. Tickets are still available in a variety of bundles, some of which include a commemorative 250-page book and 10" vinyl compilation (which you can buy separately too). The daily schedule is listed below.

The 10" record that comes with the book features exclusive collaborations from Bay Of Pigs (Spiritualized, Soldiers of Fortune and Neil Hagerty), Jorge Elbrose (Jorge Elbrecht and Ariel Pink), Autre Ne Veut and Fennesz, Bobb Trimble and Quilt and The Lonely Sailor and Renée Mendoza Haran (members of Total Control, Lace Curtain and Ashrae Fax.) This music is exclusive to the book and will not be available digitally. There were 1000 made.

Many of the bands playing have new records either out now or on the way. Brattleboro, VT collective Happy Jawbone Family Band will release their brand new, self-titled LP next week (10/15) via the label. These guys have put out a lot of music -- some of which was collected for Tastes The Broom earlier this year -- but this is a pretty tight, cohesive and enjoyable record. And though the name gives off vibes of folk/bluegrass/jam/etc it would fit in alongside a mix with Fresh & Onlys or Built to Spill on it. You can stream the whole thing over at Pitchfork. You can also catch HJFB tonight (10/10) at Death by Audio with Gull, Lutkie and Painted Faces.

They'll also be around next week for CMJ, playing Cameo on Wednesday (10/16) with Eternal Summers, TEEN, Quilt, Bleeding Rainbow, and Mood Rings who are also on Mexican Summer but are not scheduled to play the anniversary. All dates are listed below.

Quilt
Quiilt

Speaking for Boston's Quilt, they also have a new single, "Arctic Shark," coming out on Mexican Summer at the end of the Month and you can stream that below. That song will be on the band's new album, Held in Splendor, which will be out January 28.

No Joy, who were here not so long ago, will release a new four-song EP, Pastel And Pass Out, on November 5. Like their terrific Wait to Pleasure LP, this new 12" was produced by Jorge Elbrecht (of Lansing-Dreiden and Violens) and you can stream a track from that below.

The Fresh & Onlys, who are jetting in just for this show, released their new EP, Soothsayer, a couple weeks back and you can stream that via Spotify.

Connan Mockasin (kind of the New Zealand analogue of Ariel Pink), who will play his first-ever US show at this, releases his new album, Caramel on November 5 as well. You can stream "I'm The Man, That Will Find You" below.

Speaking of Ariel Pink, he closes out Friday night's show and has a new collaborative single with Jorge Elbrecht which you can stream below. Jorge has his fingerprints all over this weekend, as Lansing-Dreiden are reuniting for Saturday's show (which should be interesting) and he released a single with Tamaryn as well as the above-mentioned No Joy records.

And J. Spaceman of Spiritualized plays tonight (10/10) at 7 Dunham Gallery with Glen Hasnard and Sean Bones as part of a Daniel Johnston photo book exhibition.

The Rockabus was originally going to provide transportation from Williamsburg and Borough Hall to Red Hook but that is not happening now. Public transportation will get you there eventually.

Quilt, Happy Jawbone, and No Joy tour dates are listed, along with the Mexican Summer Five Years schedule, streams and a flyer, below...

Spiritualized at Webster Hall last week (more by Greg Cristman)
Mexican Summer

Last week, we mentioned that Brooklyn label Mexican Summer would be throwing a fifth anniversary party in Red Hook (like Captured Tracks just did in Bushwick). It's since been announced that the festival will take place at Pioneer Works on October 11 and 12 and the lineup includes Ariel Pink (who just played Station to Station), the US debut of New Zealand's Connan Mockasin (who was supposed to play Station to Station, but dropped off), Spiritualized (who just played Webster Hall), Tamaryn, The Fresh & Onlys, No Joy, Quilt, Co La, Lilacs & Champagne, Happy Jawbone Family Band, Weyes Blood, Mike Wexler, Home Blitz, '80s-era cult psych-folk legend Bobb Trimble (who played NYC a couple times in the past year or so), '70s-era cult psych-folk legend Linda Perhacs (who makes her NYC debut at the show!), and Soldiers of Fortune (aka the "supergroup" of Papa Crazee, Mike Bones, Matt Sweeney, Barry London, Brad Truax, and Kid Millions, who will be doing a 2 hour jam sesh with special guests).

The fest also features an out-of-retirement performance by Lansing-Dreiden, the arty band led Jorge Elbrecht now of Violens. L-D only played a handful of shows in their original incarnation.

Various ticket options are available now online and at Brooklyn's Co-Op 87, who will also have a pop-up store at the festival.

In addition to the festival, Mexican Summer is also celebrating their five-year anniversary with a new book. A press release states:

The five-year anniversary is commemorated by Mexican Summer: Five Years, a 250-page, 11x11" book limited to 1,000 copies. The book features unique and unseen art and ephemera, photos and written contributions from a host of Mexican Summer artists. Designed by longtime collaborator Dan Schechter, Mexican Summer: Five Years features an embossed cloth cover, screen-printed craft paper wrap, and three interior paper stocks.

Accompanying the book is a 10" record of exclusive collaborations from Bay Of Pigs (Spiritualized, Soldiers of Fortune and Neil Hagerty), Jorge Elbrose (Jorge Elbrecht and Ariel Pink), Autre Ne Veut and Fennesz, Bobb Trimble and Quilt and The Lonely Sailor and Renée Mendoza Haran (members of Total Control, Lace Curtain and Ashrae Fax.) This music is exclusive to the book and will not be available digitally.

J. Spaceman @ LPR 9/11/2013
ìSpaceman

After playing Webster Hall with Spiritualized on Tuesday, J. Spaceman (aka main man Jason Pierce) brought it back down to earth with a low key show at Le Poisson Rouge Wednesday night (9/11). Oneida's Kid Millions, who has been Spiritualized's North American touring drummer this year, kept things from getting too laid back. And keeping things weird was opener Eric Copeland of Black Dice who not too long ago released a new solo album on DFA. Pictures from Le Poisson Rouge are in this post.

Spiritualized @ Webster Hall - 9/10/13
Spiritualized

Neo-psychedelic greats Spiritualized are on the road and they just landed in NYC last night (9/10) for a show at Webster Hall with Guy Blakeslee (of The Entrance Band). They played a good amount off of last year's Sweet Heart Sweet Light, as well as hitting their classic Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, 2003's Amazing Grace, and a few other cuts from throughout their career. Pictures and the setlist from the show are in this post.

Spiritualized main man Jason Pierce (aka J. Spaceman) is hanging around NYC to headline a more intimate show at Le Poisson Rouge tonight (9/11) with current Spiritualized drummer Kid Millions (also of Oneida), and Eric Copeland (of Black Dice). Tickets are still available.

More pictures and the setlist from Webster Hall below...

J. Spaceman w/ Spiritualized at Coachella 2013 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
J Spaceman

Psych rockers Spiritualized, who were just in the NYC-area earlier this month for a CT show with The Flaming Lips, will return when their previously discussed tour hits Webster Hall on September 10 with Guy Blakeslee (of The Entrance Band). Tickets for that show are still available.

Meanwhile, the day after that show, Spiritualized main man Jason Pierce (also of Spacemen 3) will be playing a more intimate NYC show under his J. Spaceman moniker at Le Poisson Rouge (9/11) with Kid Millions (of Oneida and who has played drums for Spiritualized). Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Speaking of The Flaming Lips, they'll also be back in NYC when their tour with Tame Impala hits Terminal 5 on October 1 and 2 (tickets).

Updated Spiritualized dates are listed, along with a video, below...

Spiritualized at Coachella 2013 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Spiritualized

Long-running neo-psychedelia collective Spiritualized returned last year with Sweet Heart Sweet Light, their first album since 2008, and a very solid one at that. They've since been supporting it on a tour, which recently included a very tiny NYC show around the time they played Coachella. Now the band are set to make their way back to the area for a couple shows that will be much easier to get into.

First, they'll play Wallingford, CT's Oakdale Theatre on July 15 with The Flaming Lips. It's not the closest venue to NYC, but for a lineup like that, it might be worth the commute. Then, later this summer after playing Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, NC, Spiritualized will play a show that's actually in NYC at Webster Hall on September 10. Tickets for the Webster Hall show go on AmEx presale today (6/5) at noon with a general on-sale beginning Friday (6/7) at noon. Tickets for the CT show are on sale now.

Spiritualized's currently-scheduled dates are a little scattered so it's possible that a full tour will be announced soon. All known dates are listed, along with a couple videos, below...

Hopscotch

One of the most eclectic lineups in the US, Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, NC, will be back for 2013 on September 5 -7. Pulling from all genres, this year's line-up includes names like Big Boi (who plays NYC tonight), Spiritualized, Sleep, Wolf Eyes (who have a new video), The Breeders (performing Last Splash), John Cale, Kurt Vile & the Violators, Gorguts, Inter Arma (who play NYC on Saturday), Double Negative (who played NYC this past weekend), Swearin' (them too), Pissed Jeans, Dan Friel, Waxahatchee and many many others. Three-day wristbands are on sale now with individual day tickets going on sale in June. Full lineup is below.

Coachella 2013 - Day 2
Coachella 2013 - Day 2
Coachella 2013 - Day 2

"It was a mixed bag for veteran acts on Saturday. On one hand, The Evens, featuring ex-Minor Threat and Fugazi man Ian MacKaye, drew a respectable (and respectful) Gobi Tent crowd early in the day; the Descendents' influential melodic-punk found a fairly large following at the Outdoor Theatre under the stars; and New Order brought a solid throng along for its night-capping Mojave Tent performance (despite going up against headlining Phoenix and post-rock favorites Sigur Rós, among others). But reunited D.C. garage-soul outfit The Make-Up, underground hip-hop icon El-P and British ska survivors The Selecter played to some of the weekend's sparsest audiences in the Gobi Tent." [Las Vegas Weekly]
Coachella 2013, now streaming live, continued on Saturday with the previously discussed sets by Phoenix (and R Kelly) and The Postal Service (Jenny Lewis included), as well as Sigur Ros, Bat For Lashes, Major Lazer, Descendents, 2 Chainz, Savages, The Evens, and many more. Pictures from Friday are HERE and HERE.

UPDATE: Pictures from Sunday are HERE.

Spiritualized @ Secret Project Robot 4/2/2013
Spiritualized

Spiritualized surprised nearly everyone yesterday by announcing they'd be playing tiny Bushwick DIY space Secret Project Robot that night (4/2) as a warm-up to their West Coast tour that includes stops at both Coachella weekends. SPR let in maybe 150 people, and Jason Pierce and his band (which includes Oneida drummer Kid Millions on this go-round) ran though a dozen songs, including "Walkin' with Jesus" by Jason's old band, Spacemen 3 (It was on the setlist, but got cut).

Setlist, more pics and quite a bit of video from last night's Spiritualized show are below.

Spiritualized @ T5, May 2012 (more by Dana [distortion] Yavin)
Spiritualized

We thought this was an April Fools Day joke at first but apparently it's true. Spiritualized, whose West Coast tour (scheduled around Coachella) kicks off in Colorado on Thursday (4/4), have been practicing here in Brooklyn with new touring members Kid Millions (Oneida) and Brad Truax (currently in Interpol). They've decided to do a last-minute NYC show tonight (4/2) at Secret Project Robot! No advance tickets. Doors are at 8 PM, the show is at 9 PM and will be over by 11 PM. $10.

Whoah.

Spiritualized @ T5, May 2012 (more by Dana [distortion] Yavin)
Spiritualized

Spiritualized had a great 2012, releasing one of the most acclaimed albums of their 20-year career and touring all over (including NYC back in May). Jason Pierce and company are coming back to America this Spring for another tour, hitting NYC this time at Webster Hall on March 19. No ticket info yet for that show but you can keep checking Ticketmaster.

UPDATE: Scratch that, the tour has been cancelled. No upcoming U.S. dates. Bummer.

UPDATE 1/11: Looks like the West Coast dates are happening. (Coachella would fit right in there too.) No East Coast though. Dates are listed below.

Russell Simins

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion released a new album, Meat and Bone, this year and we spoke to drummer Russell Simins to see what his favorite albums of the year were. There is some new stuff there, but a good chunk of the list is made up of reissues and uncovered lost recordings, and he's got some really interesting inclusions. Check out his full list below.

As mentioned, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion will play a WFMU benefit (to help WFMU recover from Sandy damages) in NYC on January 13 at The Bell House with Jonathan Toubin, legendary Texas gospel funk group The Relatives (who also play Joe's Pub a day later with Debo Band), Dot Wiggin, and Di Dionyso. Tickets for that show are still available.

Russell's list below...

Pitchfork Albums

Today Pitchfork posted the first half (well, first 30 albums) of their Top 50 Albums of 2012 list. There are some surprises on it, like Peaking Lights and Sharon Van Etten, who seemed more likely to end up on their Honorable Mentions list due to their relatively lower scores and the fact that most of the albums on this list were awarded Best New Music throughout the year. Cat Power and Hot Chip also make it, both of whose new albums seemed to have received less love from Pitchfork than previous releases by those artists. A Rustie Essential Mix also makes the list even though his actual album which came out last year didn't make their 2011 list. And of course the expected ones end up there too like Purity Ring, Julia Holter, Schoolboy Q, Miguel, and more. The remaining 20 will be revealed tomorrow (Friday, 12/21).

Check out their 50-30 picks below...

Pitchfork Top Tracks

Pitchfork just posted their much anticipated list of the top 100 tracks of 2012. The #1 slot went to... Grimes! Whether you thought the whole of her album Visions was good or not, it was hard to deny the charms of "Oblivion." (Having that great video didn't hurt either.) Do you think it deserved to top the list? If not then what song should've?

You can check out P4K's entire hot 100 of 2012 below.

DOWNLOAD: Ex Cops - Wonderful Christmas Time (MP3)

Ex Cops

Admission. Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time" is easily my most-hated holiday pop song. Repetive, grating, plodding, and seemingly recorded by accident, the song makes me want to suck a candycane into a point and gouge out my eardrums. (Unlike, say, The Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping" which I can listen to ad infinitum.) So it's a Christmas miracle that Ex Cops have taken this unfortunate Macca yuletide perennial and sped it up, turned it up and transformed it into a rough-hewn little indiepop charmer. We've got the premiere of the song right here in the post to download above or stream below. Merry Ex-mas.

Another present you're going to have to wait a bit for is Ex Cops terrific debut album, True Hallucinations, which hits January 22 via Other Music Recording Company. The band are playing a record release show at Glasslands that same day with Hunters also on the bill (tickets). After that, Ex Cops play Mercury Lounge on February 15 and tickets to that show are on sale at noon. You can see them sooner than that, though, as they were just added to tonight's Paul Banks show at Webster Hall (12/14) and tickets are still available.

Meanwhile Ex Cops' Brian Harding and Amalie Bruun have each submitted lists of their favorite songs from 2012. In a bit of daring, they both include their own single "You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb" on their respective lists. Check them out below.

As mentioned before, Tame Impala just announced a 2013 tour, and will play Terminal 5 in NYC on February 19. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (11/30) at noon.

NME's Top 50 LPs of 2012 are listed below.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah/Feist
Sasquatch Festival 2012 - Day 4
Sasquatch Festival 2012 - Day 4

Before the release of their 2011 album, "Hysterical," Clap Your Hands Say Yeah had been inactive for three years, but they were as lively as ever on Monday afternoon. Blowing through tracks from all three of their albums, Alec Ounsworth and company charged through a set full of guitar-based indie rock that catered heavily towards their fans. But judging by the crowd's response, even those who were unfamiliar with the band were enticed. After playing Sasquatch! 2006 on a much smaller stage, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's triumphant set had the crowd, well, clapping their hands and saying "yeah!"
Gorge, WA festival Sasquatch wrapped up on May 27 with sets from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Feist, Beck, Spiritualized, SBTRKT, Shabazz Palaces, Ted Leo, Cass McCombs, Damien Jurado, Cloud Cult and more.

Mogwai (who have upcoming shows with Balam Acab) were supposed to play that day but they cancelled last minute and were replaced by Deer Tick who came on to play a set of covers.

Pictures of Day 1 are HERE, Day 2 are HERE and HERE, Day 3 are HERE, and more from Day 4 below...
