SPIN top 50 2012

SPIN have revealed their list of the top 50 albums of 2012. It continues SPIN's trend of giving love to crossover punk and metal (which they've been pretty consistent with since naming Fucked Up's David Comes to Life their top album of 2011) with the inclusion of Baroness, Torche, Pallbearer, Cloud Nothings, and Japandroids, but rather surprisingly excludes the SPIN Essential'd Ceremony - Zoo and The Men - Open Your Heart, in favor of popular blowouts by Taylor Swift, fun., and Nicki Minaj. The list also shares its #1 and #2 with the two highest Pitchfork-rated albums of the year. And no Grimes.

The list begins with the Kanye-cribbed disclaimer, "Most critics' taste levels ain't at our waist level. Ain't nobody fucking with our clique." Check out SPIN's Top 50 LPs of 2012 list below.

Jack White @ Radio City Music Hall, 9/30/2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
Jack White

In addition to the Fleetwood Mac cover story (and Rumours cover CD that comes with it), the new issue of MOJO is the 2012 Year-End wrap-up with the best albums list which is topped by Jack White's Blunderbuss. Their list is definitely different than most, but also in line with the mag that puts the Beatles on the cover at least once a year. You can check out MOJO's Top 20 below.

Willis Earl Beal at Bowery Ballroom in April (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
Willis Earl Beal

The Weeksville Garden Party, a series of free shows in Weeksville Heritage Center which happen every Saturday in July, has been expanded. You already knew that Spoek Mathambo (who played LPR last night) will be playing the one this Saturday (7/14), and since we last spoke the lineup for that show has been expanded. It also includes FlyLo associate/bass wizard Thundercat and R&B singer Georga Anne Muldrow, whose new Madlib-produced LP is one of the best of its genre right now. Georgia Anne will be performing with special guest Dudley Perkins, who she recently toured with. Doors for Saturday's show are at 4 PM.

Then, on July 21, The Weeksville Heritage Center will be graced by Willis Earl Beal, who has yet to reschedule that free show with Bobby Womack but this one should tide us over until then. The show is also with Krystie Warren. No show has been announced as of this post for Saturday, July 28.

Speaking of that Bobby Womack show, if you missed it, just when it looked like things were getting better and Bobby was going to play a MHOW show on July 3, he ended up canceling that one too. Hopefully Bobby will get well soon and finally make his way back to NYC. Check out this recent interview he did with NPR where he spoke about what's been going on:

"Before me, there was a higher and stronger supreme being that put me in the position to have that talent," he adds. "I've seen [drugs] take away my friends, from Wilson Pickett to James Brown to Michael Jackson, and I can just go on naming. I say, if I'm still here, God must still have a purpose for me."
The current Weeksville Garden Party schedule is below...

Genre hopping rapper/producer Spoek Mathambo is continuing to tour behind his Father Creeper, which he dropped earlier this year via Sub Pop. If you've yet to check it out, you can listen to the whole thing below.

Spoek's in the middle of a European run right now, and will make his way over to North America in July. While he's here, he'll play a NYC show on July 12 at Le Poisson Rouge and a free show in Brooklyn at Weeksville Heritage Center on July 14. Tickets for the LPR show are on sale now.

All dates are listed below, along with the album stream...

Lincoln Center

If on you're way out of the subway in late July you happen to notice a busker that looks a helluva lot like Billy Bragg surrounded by an army of other guitar-weilding maniacs, don't be alarmed. The spectacle is just the opening act for the two+ week Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival, which will feature shows with Mavis Staples (as discussed), "Laurie Anderson and Friends", Bettye LaVette, a girl-group heavy Ponderosa Stomp, the 28th Annual Roots of American Music Festival, The Bar-Kays, and many, many others at the Damrosch Park Bandshell and other Manhattan locations from July 27th until its close on August 14th. The full schedule is below.

The Big Busk

The Big Busk is the first performance scheduled (and it happens twice on July 27th), and will see Bragg leading a play-along concert flanked by an army of cue-cards detailing what chords he is playing. Check out a video from a 2008 'Big Busk' that took place in England, below.

Billy Bragg will also make up his cancelled dates from earlier this year around that 7/27 appearance. He'll play City Winery in NYC on 7/26 (tickets), 7/28 (tickets) and 7/29 (tickets).

All Lincoln Center festival dates and lineups, and all Billy Bragg tour dates are below.
