Squeeze Cradle to the Grave

Squeeze are set to release their first album of new material in 17 years this fall. Titled Cradle to the Grave, it's songs Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook recorded for the BBC series of the same name (which is based on Danny Baker's autobiography Going To Sea in a Sieve). That's the cover art above and you can stream "Happy Days," which features those signature Difford & Tilbrook harmonies, below.

As mentioned, Difford & Tilbrook will be going on a North American acoustic tour this winter, hitting the NYC area for three dates: Best Buy Theatre on December 17 & 18 (tickets) and Huntington, NY's The Paramount on December 12 (tickets).

Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 2
Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 2
Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 2

"For a certain breed of diehard Coachella fan, once is just not enough. And since 2012 is the first year that the epic desert music and arts festival is being mounted twice in Indio, California, it was inevitable that some of the most obsessed would find a way to attend both three-day weekends.

"The Monday after the first one, I was kind of licking my wounds and I said, 'Hey, let's go again! I'm down. I get paid on Friday. It can happen," 28-year-old Carlos Morales, from Fullerton, California, told Rolling Stone yesterday. "Radiohead was a big part of it. They were amazing, and I really wanted to see them again."

Tickets for a single Coachella weekend are hard enough to come by; in recent years, they've typically sold out within days of going on sale, which sparked the motivation for festival organizers Goldenvoice Productions to add an identical second weekend this year. About six percent of festivalgoers who bought tickets online directly from the promoter managed to pick up tickets for both weekends, said Coachella co-founder Paul Tollett. Resales are harder to measure, but last-minute impulse buyers for the second weekend were rewarded with some tickets being sold at below face value.

Alison Swing, 21, of Long Beach, bought her second set of tickets "from a friend of a friend of a friend" and got a $100 discount from the cover price, she said with a laugh. "It was nerve-wracking spending the money," Swing admitted, "but I wanted to go back so bad. I'll deal with it after." [Rolling Stone]

Coachella concludes today, Sunday, 4/22, Earth Day 2012.

You saw the pictures from Friday, a video of the Black Keys performing with John Fogerty, video from a Friday night party that Thom Yorke DJ'd, and Radiohead's setlist from Saturday. Here are the pictures from Saturday, 4/21/2012, Record Store Day, the 2nd day of the 2nd weekend of Coachella 2012.

As you can see in the above picture, The Black Lips paid tribute (if you want to call it that) to hologram Tupac (who should be making another appearance with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg tonight) with their own hologram (actually a cut out) of Biggie Smalls. St. Vincent joined Andrew Bird on stage to help perform "Lusitania." Azealia Banks, in a different looking outfit than last week, apparently suffered a wardrobe malfunction. A$AP Rocky was joined by Master P, Romeo, No Limit and many other friends on stage in the Gobi tent, as he and Radiohead simultaneously closed out the night once again.

More pictures from all of Saturday, and a video from ASAP's guest-filled set, below...

Coachella 2012 - Day 2
Coachella 2012 - Day 2
Coachella 2012 - Day 2

"The earlier part of the afternoon felt a little sleepy. People waking up late after Friday, taking their time getting to the festival, and the earliest bands on the bill usually have a gentler style of music anyway. That all changed, for us at least, with the arrival of the Buzzcocks, those spiky, rapid-fire elder statesmen of melodic British punk, on stage in the Gobi tent.

Founders Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle look older now -- it's been 35 years or so since they launched the band --but their voices are strong, their rapid-fire guitar riffing still delivers an electric current to the brain. And, bonus for fans on Saturday, the short length of many of their songs meant you got a whole lot of Buzzcocks packed into a 55-minute set." [Orange County Register]

Before Radiohead closed out Saturday with a near-2 hour headlining set, Coachella-goers were treated to live music by Jeff Mangum, the Buzzcocks, Squeeze, fIREHOSE, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Bon Iver (videos & setlist HERE), Andrew Bird, The Shins, SBTRKT, Flying Lotus, A$AP Rocky (who played at the same time as Radiohead), Feist, Noel Gallagher, Destroyer, Grace Potter, The Head and the Heart, and many more.

You saw our pictures of Friday HERE and HERE, and St. Vincent and Radiohead from Saturday. The rest of Saturday, below...

The B-52s

As mentioned, Squeeze have some upcoming dates in April with The English Beat which include Bergen Performing Arts Center (4/23) in Englewood, NJ (tickets), Roseland Ballroom (4/28) in NYC (tickets), and they've since added another NJ show happening on 4/25 at Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank (tickets).

The English Beat, who as Bill pointed out last year, is really just Dave Wakeling plus other people, has a number of other dates leading up to the Squeeze shows. Those dates include a show at Maxwell's on April 2. Tickets are on sale now.

After the English Beat shows, Squeeze will be hooking up with the B-52s in June and July as part of the B-52s' 35th anniversary tour. Those shows include Morristown, NJ (7/10), Atlantic City, NJ (7/13), Canandaigua, NY (7/14), and Westbury, NY (7/15). All dates and venues are listed below. The B-52s also play their own show at Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, NJ on 8/8.

In other new wave news, Dexys Midnight Runners (the UK version of The Beat includes a former Dexys member), who originally reunited in 2003, are set to release their first album since 1985's Don't Stand Me Down. The new album (which is being released under the name Dexys) is called One Day I'm Going To Soar. Check out the single, "Nowhere Is Home," and a recent BBC interview/feature, below. The Dexys already have shows scheduled in Europe. "The performances will be made up of the entire new album {One Day Im Going To Soar}, in sequence, followed by a few Dexys favourites."

All dates and stuff below...

UK new wave pioneers Squeeze, who reunited in 2007, have a few US festival dates this year including Coachella in April. They just recently announced that they'll also be playing some other US shows that same month including a NYC show happening on April 28 on Roseland Ballroom and an Englewood, NJ show happening on April 23 at Bergen Performing Arts Center. Both of those shows are with The English Beat. Tickets for the Roseland show ($55 Advance, $60 Day of Show) go on sale Friday (2/24) at 10am, but there's also a presale that starts 24 hours earlier. Tickets for the NJ show go on sale Friday at noon.

All dates and some videos below...

Radiohead @ Roseland Ballroom in 2011 (more by Bao Nguyen)

Coachella which is taking place over the course of two weekends this year (April 13-15 and 20-22) revealed their 2012 lineup. Last week, Azealia Banks was the first artist confirmed, and earlier today they confirmed The Weeknd (maybe he found a band?), and before that, Jimmy Cliff, Breakbot, and Housse De Racket. The reunited Pulp then announced itself. The full lineup also includes headliners The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, not to mention, as predicted, the reunited At the Drive In and the reunited Mazzy Star (!), and Madness and Refused (!) and Jeff Mangum and many, many more that you can see below...

Jeremy Jay

Speaking of Union Hall, the small Park Slope venue doesn't get as much attention since its bigger sister The Bell House opened in the same neighborhood, but there are a bunch of shows coming up there in the next few days that I want to highlight real quick.

LA's Jeremy Jay (K Records) is there tonight (11/5). LA's Black Umbrella is on tour with Jeremy and the pair also play Cake Shop on Friday (11/6). Michael Leviton is also on the Union Hall bill. All dates below.

Friday night (11/6) at Union Hall is a solo show by Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze who plays Maxwell's tonight (11/5).

"Do you really want to hear the answer to the question "What if Glenn Tilbrook started singing like Freddy Mercury?" Do you think that jumping from the awkwardly stomping prog of late Led Zeppelin to ultra-compressed contemporary beats 'n' coos or McCartney-esque cute-pop is inherently interesting? If you answer yes, you might love this record. But if you're left shaking your head like me, it's probably because [Dave] Longstreth's music begs the question. Why did he make Bitte Orca? The only answer proffered is, because he could. " [Dusted]

Dave Longstreth: Who's Glenn Tilbrook?

AV Club: The guy from Squeeze.

Dave Longstreth: From Squeeze? Really? Is this guy British too? Well, whatever. I don't give a fuck.

The Union Hall show is an early show.

The late show at the same venue is your 2nd NYC chance to catch The Hidden Cameras and Gentleman Reg on their current tour. The Canadian artists played Le Poisson Rouge last night while the Yankees were winning the World Series. How was it (the show I mean)?

Glorytellers and Ida play Union Hall on Saturday (11/7). Tickets are still on sale.

Finally, end the weekend laughing. Eugene Mirman and Michael Showalter's comedy show, Tearing the Veil of Maya, is happening at Union Hall on Sunday (11/8).

Duran Duran on Rolling Stone

Squeeze is touring, and tickets are now on sale for a 2nd NYC date at Nokia Theatre. (thx Thighs)

The Police kicked off their reunion tour in Canada, and they've added another NYC show.

I know nothing about this band, but file this in the "band that plays MSG may be playing a small venue" category. Somebody told me that "Exposed Youth" at Knitting Factory on June 4th is O.A.R. under a fake name. Google reveals that "Exposed Youth" was O.A.R.'s old name or something.

As you know, Duran Duran is playing a fan club show at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on June 17th. I have two pairs of tickets to give away. Do you want to win them? You don't even need to be in the fan club. E-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Duran), and include a link to a YouTube video from the 80's that you think is awesome. Two winners will be picked and notified via e-mail. Contest ends June 7, 2007 @ noon EST.

And since this post started with an old Rolling Stone cover, here's a picture of that new Amy Winehouse one:

Amy Winehouse on Rolling Stone

"Reformed British pop supergroup Squeeze will launch a comeback tour in America. The hitmakers announced plans to reunite for a British tour last month, and now they're taking the reunion dates to America, where they scored a handful of hits in the 1980s.

The band, led by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, will perform 12 shows in North America, beginning in Massachusetts on July 31. The tour will mark the first time Difford and Tilbrook have performed together since 1998." [Starpulse]

Tickets went on pre-sale this morning for the show on August 3rd at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. All tour dates below....
