We already posted Tony Visconti, Iggy Pop, Florence + the Machine, The Mountain Goats, Questlove and Cyndi Lauper's tributes to the late, great David Bowie, and other artists have written tributes as well. Paul McCartney (pictured with Bowie above) writes:
Very sad news to wake up to on this raining morning. David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together. His music played a very strong part in British musical history and I'm proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world.
"I send my deepest sympathies to his family and will always remember the great laughs we had through the years. His star will shine in the sky forever.
The Rolling Stones posted tweets reading: "The Rolling Stones are shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the death of our dear friend David Bowie. As well as being a wonderful and kind man, he was an extraordinary artist, and a true original." Mick Jagger added, "David was always an inspiration to me and a true original. He was wonderfully shameless in his work. We had so many good times together. He was my friend, I will never forget him," and posted the above pic.

He was like an umbrella for people who felt a bit different. Bowie was like a like a lighthouse that guided those people and made them feel it was alright to be different, to try things out and dye your hair and wear strange clothes. I think people feel it very personally because he was very important in how people grew up.
I do think it's quite amazing that he put this record out and managed to keep it secret that he was ill. People should watch that 'Blackstar' video and listen to that song. It's like he's saying goodbye to everybody, he's controlling it.
We can all talk about David Bowie. I think the best thing to do on this day would be to listen to him, and to watch films of him and just see what a fantastic artist he was and how many different guises he had, and the incredible amount of work that he did.
Obviously it's a sad day that he's died, but the fact that he managed to stay in control of that image and make another artistic statement when he was obviously ill and knew that he was dying, I think that's incredible and it makes me feel quite happy that he stayed creative right to the end of his life. I think that can only be inspirational."
Brian Eno (pictured with Bowie above) said in a statement via BBC:
David's death came as a complete surprise, as did nearly everything else about him. I feel a huge gap now.
We knew each other for over 40 years, in a friendship that was always tinged by echoes of Pete and Dud. Over the last few years - with him living in New York and me in London - our connection was by email. We signed off with invented names: some of his were mr showbiz, milton keynes, rhoda borrocks and the duke of ear.
About a year ago we started talking about Outside - the last album we worked on together. We both liked that album a lot and felt that it had fallen through the cracks. We talked about revisiting it, taking it somewhere new. I was looking forward to that.
I received an email from him seven days ago. It was as funny as always, and as surreal, looping through word games and allusions and all the usual stuff we did. It ended with this sentence: 'Thank you for our good times, brian. they will never rot'. And it was signed 'Dawn'.
I realise now he was saying goodbye.
Gerard Casale of Devo (pictured with Bowie at NYC's Max's Kansas City, from a 1970s issue of Rock Scene Magazine, above) wrote: "David Bowie was one of the greatest artists of all time. I feel privileged that I ever got to know him. He gave Devo his blessing. He remained true to his art until the end like I wanted so badly for us to do."
Nile Rodgers, who produced Bowie's hit 1983 album Let's Dance, paid tribute in The Guardian:
One day David said: "Nile, this is what I want my album to sound like," and he showed me a picture of Little Richard in a red suit getting into a red Cadillac convertible. How do you translate that?! But in actual fact I knew exactly what he meant, and that was the point I realised that David Bowie was the Picasso of rock'n'roll. He got uncomfortable with me calling him that but I did it anyway. Because I realised he saw the world in an abstract way, as well as in the way we all see it. And what that picture meant was not that he wanted a retro record, or something based on Little Richard's music, but that he wanted something that would always look modern. He showed me the future and the past and it was evergreen. The highly designed Cadillac and the red monochromatic suit - that picture was taken in the 1960s but it would still look modern to someone in the year 3000!Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, writing for The Talkhouse, said:
When I went to see the David Bowie retrospective traveling the globe, which was then in Chicago, I discovered that he wanted to be a writer when he was a young, with no desire to be a performer. It made sense to me that he would approach performing and his persona from a conceptual practice, understanding the idea of projection, the back 'n' forth unspoken dialogue between performer and audience. There is no one who did it better than Bowie, breaking thru the glass ceiling of gender roles and expectations for what is sexy and charismatic as a rock 'n' roll icon, post John Wayne, bringing the idea of the "dandy" of eighteenth century France into contemporary life, bringing a focus on this new male identity set adrift with no apparent purpose since the demise of the silent cowboy type (who's going to protect and take care of us womenfolk?), except free to be whatever he could imagine he could be, and taking us, his audience, along with him. J Mascis wrote: "I'll miss David Bowie so much. He was the only 60's rocker who seemed to know and care what was going on out of his generation, and made younger bands feel understood and relevant." He posted it along with a stream of Dinosaur Jr's cover of Bowie's "Quicksand," which you can hear below.
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin said, "Bowie was an innovator, a unique artist with a vision that changed the face of popular music. He is greatly missed."

He was a one-off, a brilliant outlier, always exploring, challenging and inspiring anyone who wanted to push the boundaries of music, art, fashion and society.
There are so few artists who can touch a generation as he did, we will miss him badly.

John and David respected each other. They were well matched in intellect and talent. As John and I had very few friends we felt David was as close as family.Sean adds, "Absolutely devastating news. I feel so lucky to have considered you a friend. R.I.P. Thank you for everything."
After John died, David was always there for Sean and me. When Sean was at boarding school in Switzerland, David would pick him up and take him on trips to museums and let Sean hang out at his recording studio in Geneva.
For Sean this is losing another father figure. It will be hard for him, I know. But we have some sweet memories which will stay with us forever.
Rough Trade shops have announced that they're donating all January profits from Bowie recordings to cancer research.
Lou Reed is unfortunately not around to tell us what he thinks today, but we're sure he's greeting the "master" in the sky.

Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins recently announced that they're celebrating the 10th anniversary of Rabbit Fur Coat on a short 2016 tour with M. Ward. The tour already included a NYC show on February 3 at Beacon Theatre, which is still on sale, but it now also includes a second show the day later (2/4) at the same venue. Tickets for night 2 go on sale Friday (10/2) at 11 AM with AmEx/Chase/fan/Bowery/local presales starting Wednesday (9/30) at 11 AM.

Neil Young's annual benefit concert for The Bridge School, a "non-profit, innovative organization educating children with severe speech and physical impairments through the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems and assistive technology," happens this year from October 24 - 25 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA.
Neil plays as always (with his band Promise of the Real), and so does Ryan Adams (who just played a big Neil Young tribute in NYC), St. Vincent, Spoon, Gary Clark Jr, Dixie Chicks, Sheryl Crow and Nils Lofgren. More info here.

If you've followed along with Taylor Swift's current tour at all, you probably know she's bringing out surprise guests at every tour stop. It's a pretty diverse list, but last night (8/25) in LA she made her first dip into "indie" by bringing out St. Vincent and Beck. They played Beck's "Dreams" from his upcoming still-untitled album, which you might end up calling "some indie record that's much cooler than hers." Video below.
Will Taylor continue to go deeper into indie? If so, indie musician Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear will probably not be her next collaboration. Following uproar against his recent tweets about Tay, he deleted his Twitter.

Speedy Ortiz in the Toyota Tent @ Outside Lands

As proven by her Friday afternoon performance, Annie Clark isn't just an exemplary singer-songwriter and exceptionally inventive guitarist, she's also a striking performance artist who revels in chilly artifice in order to examine the uncomfortable heat of 21st century reality.St. Vincent was a major highlight of Outside Lands day one, the day that also featured two sets each by both Natalie Prass and Speedy Ortiz. We caught Natalie and Speedy in the Toyota Tent, a stage we co-presented with Stereogum and SPIN. Natalie Prass started the day playing her soulful tunes to a crowd that drew in passberbys in from the churro stands and beer gardens in the distance. She told a story about getting stung by a scorpion in a tent on a camping trip once and so tents now freak her out. Speedy Ortiz ran through their songs with lead singer Sadie on acoustic guitar for the first time in years.
Her makeup both exacting and blurred, her black outfit covered in peek-a-boo holes, Clark resembled Prince looking like Catwoman -- and like Prince, she's confrontationally sexy with a purpose. [Rolling Stone]

St. Vincent / Nelly Furtado, tUnE-yArDs, Dev Hynes / finale
In "Contemporary Color," a copresentation of Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Mr. Byrne has organized collaborations among 10 elite color guard teams and recording artists, including St. Vincent, Nelly Furtado and Devonté Hynes. Between acts, the showcase, performed on Saturday at Barclays Center, included video clips making it clear that for many students, color guard is a way to find like-minded souls in what can be the most harrowing of American experiences: high school.After two shows last week in Toronto, David Byrne brought his music-meets-color-guard "Contemporary Color" extravaganza to Barclays Center on Saturday (6/27) and Sunday (6/28), pairing performers such as St. Vincent, How to Dress Well, Dev Hynes, Ad Rock & Money Mark, tUnE-yArDs, Nelly Furtado and Zola Jesus (performing songs written just for this production) with high school color guard teams. The idea to pair color guard with live music is an intriguing one, but the results don't entirely click. One exception was the pairing of Somerville High School in New Jersey with Money Mark and Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys whose music, not unlike that of a marching band, grew in power. But too much of the music was on the slow side, suffocating the routines and making it apparent that the earnestness of the performers clashed with the musicians who had difficulty shedding their personas. They may have been in bands in high school, but it didn't feel as if they had ever been band geeks. - [NY Times]

Florence and the Machine were the first act to put on a show worthy of a headliner. Drenched in warm golden light, Florence hopped around on one leg as she led the crowd in sing-alongs of hits such as What the Water Gave Me and Shake It Out. Her performance felt quite reserved compared to that of St Vincent, who brought out a pink Aztex-style pyramid and two backing dancers in chrome jumpsuits before putting on the performance of the day. Tracks like Marrow felt hugely aided by her band's saturated, chunky and almost shoddy-sounding synths, while St Vincent danced in sync with her troupe, who tottered around like Daryl Hannah's dying replicant in Blade Runner. The crowd were addressed as "citizens of New York city" and she stopped proceedings for a Thomas Pynchon-esque short story about an imagined storm in New York in which you grab an Arthur Russell record and Susan Sontag's diaries and hide out in a cupboard. [The Guardian]Annual NYC music festival Governors Ball went down this past weekend on Randall's Island. Day 1, Friday (6/5), had Drake's hits-filled set, Ezra Koenig's guest appearance during Chromeo's set, an unfortunate Rae Sremmurd injury, St. Vincent, The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Florence + the Machine, Ratatat, Death From Above 1979, Odesza, Rudimental and more.
Lá-Bas is something of an indie supergroup, comprised of Nathan Larson (Shudder To ThInk, Swiz), Angelica Allen (My Midnight Heart), and Jordan Kern, and their self-titled debut album features contributions from Jon Natchez (Beirut, Camera Obscura, The War on Drugs), Daniel Mintseris (St. Vincent, David Byrne), Brian Kantor (Nina Persson band, Yellowbirds), Bengt Lagerberg (The Cardigans), Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats), Grant Zubritsky (MS MR, Nina Persson band), and Kevin March (Guided By Voices, Shudder To Think). The album comes out next week (5/12) via Nathan Larson's label Modern Imperial, and it can now be streamed in full below (via SPIN).
Their album release party, which will be their first-ever live performance, happens May 12 at Baby's All Right, with a DJ set by Midnight Magic. Tickets are on sale now.

Ad Rock, Money Mark & Somerville High School Color Guard
David Byrne's high-concept Contemporary Colors shows, which pair pop musicians with high school marching band color guard troupes, are coming up, happening June 22 & 23 in Toronto (tickets) and June 27 & 28 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (tickets).

Drake / St. Vincent / Jenny Lewis
Remember punk? The supposed sound of youth and clarity? I don't know about that. Every kind of music has the age it is and the age it wants to be. At Coachella, electronic dance music wants to be young, electro-soul wants to be late-20s and early 30s, and punk, regardless of the age of the people playing it, wants to be middle-aged or older, with mixed feelings. It's the sound of probity, disappointment, disapproval.Coachella 2015 day 3 had the most amount of punk bands of the three days, a genre that was surprisingly well-represented this year, despite the bands' much smaller crowds compared to the increased interest in EDM acts. Day 3 had Brand New, Conor Oberst's recently-reformed Desaparecidos, OFF!, Touche Amore and Joyce Manor, as well as somewhat-related bands like Conor's old Saddle Creek pal Jenny Lewis and Brand New/Desaparecidos' sideshow mate Built to Spill. According to Ian Cohen at Pitchfork, those punk bands "tore through tight and triumphant sets--the difference between bands that had to win over kids instead of critics over the years instead of vice versa was abundantly clear."
The visual clichés of Coachella are sunglasses and dyed blond hair and gym-rats with neon tank tops. The punk shows I've seen so far -- there are a few of them here and there, with small crowds, like secret meetings -- are where the sundresses and tank tops are not. The obstructing monolith disappears; suddenly a different festival reveals itself. Whatever the music might give you, the sight is a relieving contrast. [NY Times]
It was also the day that Drake headlined (and, uh, made out with Madonna on stage), Florence + the Machine played (and sadly, Florence broke her foot after her set), and we got sets from Ryan Adams, St. Vincent, Jamie xx, Mac DeMarco, Panda Bear, Charles Bradley, Philip Selway, Angel Olsen, John Talabot, Sturgill Simpson, The Cribs and more.
Wire, whose new album you can stream, will be bringing their DRILL Festival to Chicago from June 11-13. (Seattle had DRILL in 2013.) Highlights include the band collaborating with St. Vincent for an extended performance of their song "Drill," as well as working with jazz musicians Ken Vandermark and Nate Wooley on a new version of their classic "Map Ref. 41°N 93°W" and the fest ends with an "all-star" performance of their debut album's title track by the pinkflag guitar orchestra. There will also be performances by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Disappears, White Lung and more. Tickets are on sale now, and full daily lineups are listed below.

The 2015 edition of WXPN's yearly XPoNential Music Festival happens July 24 - 26 at the Susquehanna Bank Center and Wiggins Park in Camden, N.J. They've just announced that My Morning Jacket and St. Vincent will headline the 7/25 show at Susquehanna and that tickets go on sale Friday (3/20) at 1 PM with a WXPN presale starting Wednesday (3/18) at 10 AM and Live Nation presales happening Thursday (3/19) at 10 AM.
Full lineup will be announced and three-day passes will go on sale for the 2015 XPoNential Festival on March 31.

Johnny Marr has covered Depeche Mode's 1993 single "I Feel You" to be released as 7" for Record Store Day 2015 with a live cover of The Smiths' "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want". It's a pretty straightforward cover ("I Feel You" was during DM's flirtation with guitar) and you can stream it below.
As for the rest of #RSD15's releases, they're announcing the full list of product later today (3/10) at an invite-only press conference at Brooklyn's Rough Trade that features panelists St. Vincent, Kate Pierson of B-52's, comedian Todd Barry and onetime Clash manager Kozmo Vinyl. Stay tuned.

Gang of Four @ Irving Plaza, 3/7/2015
Though guitarist Andy Gill is the only remaining original member Gang of Four, he and the new lineup of the band played Irving Plaza on Saturday (3/7) in support of their just-released What Happens Next. The album features loads of guest vocalists (The Kills' Alison Mosshart, The Big Pink's Robbie Furze among them) but there were no special guests at this show, just new frontman John "Gaoler" Sterry having the impossible task of replacing microwave-bashing mouthpiece Jon King. No appliances were harmed at Irving but they played a hit-heavy set, including "Anthrax," "Damaged Goods" (both of which were also names of cocktails at Irving), "At Home He's a Tourist" and "I Found That Essence Rare." St. Vincent won "Best Alternative Music Album" at the Grammys tonight (before the telecast)! Past winners of that award include U2, REM, Tom Waits, Beck, Nirvana, Radiohead, Beastie Boys, Coldplay, The White Stripes, The Black Keys, Bon Iver, Gotye, and Vampire Weekend. This year she beat Alt-J, Cage The Elephant, Jack White and Arcade Fire who have lost in this category three times (but have won in other categories).
Beck, no longer "alternative", won "Best Rock Album", but lost "Best Rock Song" to Paramore (who also beat Jack White). Jack White however did win "Best Rock Performance", beating Ryan Adams, The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, and... Beck.

With the most recent run of David Byrne's Here Lies Love now in the past, David Byrne has just announced his next high-concept project which is on an even bigger scale. It's called Contemporary Color which happens at Barclays Center on June 27 & 28. A co-production with BAM (part of their 2015 Winter/Spring Season), it's a mix of live music and color guard (the synchronized flags will be familiar to anyone who's watched a high school or college marching band). The live music portion feature performances from Byrne, Nelly Furtado, How to Dress Well, Devonté Hynes, Kelis, Nico Muhly + Ira Glass, St. Vincent, and tUnE-yArDs, plus 10 color guard teams from the US and Canada.
Tickets are on artist presale now (password: DBCOLOR). Tickets are also on sale today (1/21) for Friends of BAM, with an AmEx presale starting Friday (1/23) at 10 AM. Tickets go on sale to the general public January 28 at 10 AM.

Some years ago, a Colorguard team wanted to use some music I'd written (from a theater piece I did with Robert Wilson, called The Forest) for one of their routines. I said, "Fine, no charge... you are a high school team after all." But I asked that they send me documentation out of curiosity and for my archives. I eventually got a DVD of the whole World Championship competition. I watched, and was amazed and delighted to find myself in a new world that I didn't know existed.You can watch a video trailer about Contemporary Color below and learn more at its website. The extravaganza will make its world premiere the week before (June 22 & 23) at Toronto's Luminato Festival.
What I was viewing is more properly referred to in that world as winterguard--as it takes place in the winter and spring--after fall football season, when the colorguard teams are more closely associated with drum lines and marching bands. Off season they do their own thing--still employing flags, rifles and sabers--but their routines are less about formation than about themes, emotion, concepts and visual spectacle. Over recent decades, the teams have evolved into something strange and wonderful; they've created a vibrant, innovative and original vernacular artform that is wildly popular across the whole North American continent, but is all but unknown in many of the big urban centers--like New York, where I live. Contemporary Color aims to remedy that situation.
I was stunned at what I was seeing, and being a musician I naturally wondered to myself, "What if these performances had live music? Really great live music! Wouldn't that be amazing? And wouldn't that lift it to another level?" (Besides being fun for the musicians too!). The competitions these teams engage in already fill arenas with their fans and supporters, so I thought to myself, "Let's take it from there!"

Norwegian art pop musician Jenny Hval had somewhat of a breakthrough with 2013's Innocence Is Kinky, and that continued with last year's well received collaboration with Susanna, Meshes of Voice. Now she's announced that she's signed to Sacred Bones, making her labelmates with fellow Swans openers Pharmakon and Marissa Nadler. She plans to put out her next LP in the coming months.
As previously mentioned, Jenny will be heading out on a tour with Perfume Genius which hits NYC on March 19 at Stage 48 (tickets). Before that, she's also got dates with St. Vincent (who released a new song today), none in NYC though.

St. Vincent will release a deluxe edition of her 2014 self-titled album on February 9, which will feature four unreleased songs and the Darkside remix of "Digital Witness." She just premiered one of those new ones, "Bad Believer," over at The Guardian. Listen below.

The Village Voice's annual Pazz + Jop music critics poll is out. While the poll comes out a lot earlier than it used to when Robert Christgau helmed it, it's still late enough to give every album released in 2014 a chance. Hence, D'Angelo's Black Messiah -- which didn't make most other lists due to being released on December 15 -- claiming the top spot. Here's the Top 10 albums:

The spring edition of the biannual music festival Boston Calling happens this year from May 22-24.
