[At their first of two shows at Bowery Ballroom (11/18)], Tame Impala wowed a very sold out crowd... Though lead singer, Kevin Parker, gripped his throat throughout the set due to his strained voice, no one could complain about the band's gripping presence... Coupled with a stellar projector show of squiggles that danced to Parker's riffs, the band completely blew everyone's collective wig off with grinding guitar squeals and hardened, rhythmic percussion... Had Parker's voice been in perfect form, no one would have noticed. Lyrics are back-benched here in favor of psychedelic washes of sound. There was a wall of finely controlled squall that held us all rapt. [A Heart is a Spade]
I have to agree with the band blowing everyone's wigs off, though I saw Tame Impala's second Bowery Ballroom show which took place one night later (11/19). We already posted pictures from the first night. This set of pictures is from night two which Stardeath & White Dwarfs and Kuroma also opened. All three bands are still on tour.

More Bowery pictures and some videos below...

Although tickets may still available for their appearance at Bowery Ballroom on 11/18 (though presumably not for long), Tame Impala has added a second show at the venue the next night (11/19), and also with Stardeath and White Dwarfs & Kuroma. Tickets for the 11/19 date are currently on AMEX presale, and go on general sale at noon on Friday (10/15). More dates HERE and below.

Tame Impala's trek begins a few days before the first Bowery show, but the Aussie band has a new Daytrotter appearance, that you can listen to now, where they ran through four songs from their new LP, Innerspeaker.

Their new video for "Lucidity" with updated dates below...

Stardeath and the White Dwarfs

"Holy shit. If I had only one band to choose to see in concert it would be The Flaming Lips. Best concert I've ever been to, no contest. Friendly people, which makes sense: Flaming Lips fans are some of the friendliest people I know.

Words cannot do this concert justice. The music, the atmosphere, the smoke, the GIANT balloons filled with confetti that would POP in an explosion of rectangular colored shreds of paper, the dense cloud of pot - so thick you couldn't even smell the person next to you sparking up. And oh, the visuals, the fantastical videos they had, drippy gooey egg yolks, and naked dancing ladies, and naked drum-hitting ladies, and naked ladies dancing on the beach, and laughter, and love, and everything all around. I'm still glowing from the show." [Hilary]

In other words, just your average Flaming Lips show at Wellmont Theater in NJ last night. More pictures, the setlist of video of the band performing a Pink Floyd cover with opener Stardeath and White Dwarfs during the encore (they'll play Dark Side of the Moon in full again at Bonnaroo), below...

Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips played the 2nd date of their April tour at Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York with The Hood Internet and Stardeath and White Dwarfs. The Vassar-sponsored Saturday night show was one night before they played Barton Hall at Cornell in Ithaca, and one night after they performed the Pink Floyd song "Breathe" on Late night with Jimmy Fallon.

Monday night is the show at Wellmont Theater in NJ. More pictures from Poughkeepsie, with videos from Fallon and Ithaca, below...

Wayne Coyne @ ATP NY 2009 (more by Ryan Muir)
Wayne Coyne

The Flaming Lips have revealed they're in talks with Des McAnuff to turn their hit 2002 album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots into a theatrical spectacular.

Frontman Wayne Coyne tells WENN, "We've talked about doing something with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots now for about five or six years. They did it with Tommy and Des McAnuff was the director, and he's the one that wants to do Yoshimi.

"We've actually pursued it to a certain extent and I think that where it sits is really just me deciding to dedicate a couple of years of my life to making it.

"It's a strange opportunity but I know we've talked about it since 2003. We would incorporate all the songs and probably write some other music that told a little bit more of a story. I guess my biggest dilemma is there's not really a story with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots; it's just a series of unconnected songs that sound connected when you listen.

"That being said, I don't think it would be overly impossible to draw some connections and come up with some type of emotional storyline." [WENN]

The Flaming Lips will be playing in NYC this July with a show at Central Park SummerStage. That's already sold out, but way before that they have that April 19th show at Wellmont Theatre in Monclair, NJ, (just six days from now) which despite being listed as sold out still has tickets available at the moment. Also in April they have a few other shows - outside the NYC-area, but not that far. Lots of road trip opportunities.

They play Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie (put on by Vassar College) on Saturday, April 17th - tickets are still on sale. Stardeath & White Dwarfs open both the Vassar show and Wellmont, and The Hood Internet play Vassar too. Between those, Flaming Lips perform in Ithaca (Cornell University's Barton Hall to be exact).

The same month as the Central Park show, Flaming Lips have other New York State/New Jersey gigs: July 4th at Atlantic City House of Blues (tickets), July 22nd at ArtPark in Lewiston, NY, near Buffalo (tickets), and July 23rd on an awesome bill with Black Keys and Morning Benders (together in NYC later in July) at CMAC Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY, south of Rochester (tickets).

All Flaming Lips tour dates and more are below...
