Integrity at A389 in 2010 (more by Chris Bavaria)

The annual A389 Anniversary bash returns for its eighth year in 2012, expanding to TWO stages of acts at Sonar in Baltimore. The show goes down on January 21, 2012 and will feature appearances from Eyehategod, Integrity (a staple for the bash), Gehenna (who recently revisited their Land of Sodom 7" and Upon The Gravehill and played A389 in 2010), Starkweather, Weekend Nachos, Seven Sisters of Sleep, Starkweather, and Pick Your Side all in their only area appearances, in addition to appearances from Full of Hell (who is streaming their new record), Triac, Low Places, Hatewaves, and many others. Full lineup is below. Tickets are on sale now.
In related news, A389 will release a new flexi from Kill Life, a band featuring members of Integrity, Crass, Fucked Up, Magrudergrind and Pulling Teeth. Kill Life is joined by none other than Mike IX Williams of Eyehategod on the D.E.A. (Dead End America) 7", which is up for order now.
For those of you who can't wait until January, you can catch Integrity in Connecticut in October.
Full lineup is below, alongside some video.

Dysrhythmia at The Charleston in 2009 (more by Samantha Marble)

One of the world's most easily misspelled bands, Dysrhythmia, will play Union Pool on 3/11 as part of a show with Zevious (featuring Jeff Eber of Dysrhythmia), Smother Party, and A Fucking Elephant. The party jumps off at 9PM and will set you back $8. Kevin Hufnagel recently posted an update on the band that drops tons of incredible news about his and the rest of Dysrhythmia's projects:
Dysrhythmia is about half way through writing the next record. We'll start demoing stuff in the Spring and perhaps share a track or two online... Otherwise, a new record won't be likely until 2012. The wait will be worth it, promise... One of the reasons for that is simply due to the number of other musical ventures we have happening. In addition, Hufnagel's Vaura project has been playing some shows as of late, and Kevin will appear with the half of Vaura (Josh Strawn and Charlie Schmid) that isn't in either Dysrhythmia (Hufnagel) or Kayo Dot (Toby Driver) at the FREE record release party for their other project, Religious To Damn (a band that Zohra Atash is also a member of). As previously discussed, the show will go down at Glasslands on Jan 13th and will also feature an appearance from the great Tamaryn (who will NOT be playing a set of her own).Gorguts will be recording the new album in February, with a scheduled Summer release. Touring will follow.
Krallice will have a new record out in April.
Zevious will be doing their first full US tour in March/April.
I'll have a new solo record called Transparencies out in March/April.
They'll be a record coming Summer/Fall tentatively titled 'Night Sessions' which is a collaboration between myself and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Costanza Francavilla...
I recently guested on a 20 minute track for long running Philadelphia-based experimental progressive metal/hardcore band Starkweather. This should be out sometime next year as part of a split release. It was an honor for me to play on this track. They've been one of my favorite bands for years.

Starkweather at ABC No Rio

This Is Hardcore Fest 2010 details are officially in the open, and the three day Philly festival will feature appearances from Sheer Terror, Ink & Dagger (with Geoff Rickly of Thursday filling in on vocals), Kid Dynamite, Cro-Mags, Nails, Ringworm, Starkweather, Trapped Under Ice, Seraphim, and many others. The full list is below. Tickets are on sale for the full weekend, or each individual day (Fri, Sat) though Sunday (with Kid Dynamite and Ink & Dagger) is sold out.
One of the This is Hardcore bands, Starkweather, played ABC No Rio on Saturday (May 29) with Rosetta and Shell Shock, one of TWO Rosetta shows for the weekend (the second was the BV/1000 Knives production with Ken Mode). I ducked out before the headliner Shell Shock, and missed a good portion of Rosetta's set due to beverage consumption across the street, but Starkweather were as good (better?) than I had remembered, playing a mix of metal and hardcore all anchored by vocalist weighty and powerful Rennie Resmini's voice. The band's material from their new LP This Sheltering Night sounded fantastic live as well (cop that). More pictures from their appearance are below.
Another This is Hardcore band, Seraphim, is also on board to play SATURDAY at Cake Shop alongside Altered State, Voyager, and Monolith as part of a BV/1000 Knives/Science of Silence production. The show kicks off at 5PM!
Some pics and video of Starkweather at ABC No Rio, and the full This is Hardcore fest lineup are below...
Starkweather have cancelled their previously discussed appearance on Sunday night (3/28) at Public Assembly with Rosetta and Junius due to a scheduling conflict. In their stead, the not too shabby City of Ships, who NYC recently saw at Union Pool when they played with Battlefields, Tombs, and Rosetta. - BBG

Laura of Kylesa (more by Paul Birman)

Earlier I discussed my favorite LPs of the year, but why leave the fun to just one? I asked some of my favorite artists and promoters for their 2009 highlights. The responses were great. You already saw some of them. Justina listed some quotes, Liam Wilson talked about Philly, and Josh Graham listed good things about 2009. They continue below. You'll find lists of favorite songs and albums of the year, not to mention answers to crucial questions like:
- What are Coalesce's favorite pizza toppings?
- Which one of my top 20 artists of the year tried to get in a cab with Kirsten Dunst?
- What is the #1 sauce/condiment of 2009?

Yes, that is a clock on his head.

Portal is currently prepping their new album, Swarth, for release via Profound Lore on 10/20. For the unaware, Portal is definitely an odd duck (in the best way possible!), as the Aussies employ discordant chord patterns ala French BM masterminds Deathspell Omega, and a generally discomforting atmosphere abounds. Dig on the extremely promising "Larvae" from Swarth available above! The abstract blackened death metal band from Australia is also one of a few bands that have already been announced for Maryland Deathfest 2010 along with additions like Gorguts, Asphyx, Wolfbrigade, Gridlink, Impaled, and many many noteable others! Full MDF list is below.
Mammoth Grinder has released their new LP, Extinction of Humanity, which is available via Cyclopean Records. The band, which (as we know) shares members with Hatred Surge & Iron Age, combines an old school death metal approach of Entombed / Dismember with the charge of hardcore. Their new LP delivers on the promises made on No Results. Check out a pair of MP3s from Extinction of Humanity available for download above!
As previously discussed, Gnaw Their Tongues are releasing All The Dread Magnificence Of Perversity on 9/8 via Crucial Blast. Check out a song from the LP above, "Rife With Teeth".
In case you somehow missed it, the new Converge track, "Dark Horse" premiered on Stereogum last week. Axe To Fall has been in heavy rotation since I received a copy of this bad boy a few weeks ago, and I think that this could be their best record since Jane Doe. Check out the MP3 above and judge for yourself.
Pelican

Their show with sunn O))) / Earth / Eagle Twin is little more than three weeks away (tix), and now Pelican has dropped a new MP3 for download from their LP, What We All Come To Need. Dig on "Strung Up From The Sky" above. Helmed by Chris Common (These Arms Are Snakes) in July and featuring appearances from Greg Anderson (sunn O))), Goatsnake, etc), Aaron Turner (Isis), Ben Verellen (Harkonen, Helms Alee), and Alan Epley (Life And Times), the new album is set to blast off at their new home, Southern Lord. Look for Pelican to hit the road with Black Cobra and Disappearer for a fall tour. Black Cobra also recently signed to Southern Lord.
As previously discussed, Kowloon Walled City, is currently prepping their new LP Gambling On The Richter Scale for release 9/29 on The Perpetual Motion Machine. Preorders for the new Kowloon Walled City are up here, but meanwhile, dig on one of the tracks from the LP, "Clockwork", above.
More on Teitanblood, Heims, Slow Southern Steel, Rise & Fall, Municipal Waste, Circle Of Dead Children, and many more as This Week in Metal continues...
