Dance Bitch

Before literally riding off into the desert, Jesse Pinkman (via actor Aaron Paul) uttered his signature one-liner a final time, this time on a dance track. "Dance Bitch," a track produced by Tom Neville and Zen Freeman, featuring the voice of Paul, has become an unlikely underground sensation since its release on Rising Music following the end of "Breaking Bad." Modeselektor at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)
Modeselektor

As mentioned, NYC electronic festival Electric Zoo is returning to the recently restored (after Governors Ball damage) Randall's Island from August 30 to September 1. Though much of the lineup is stuff you probably want to stay away from (like Benny Benassi, Tiesto, David Guetta, Steve Aoki, etc), there's also a handful of people worth seeing, including Four Tet, Moderat, Bondax, A-Trak, Diplo, Baauer, AraabMuzik, Skream, Cyril Hahn, RL Grime, Just Blaze, Joy Orbison, and Scuba. Tickets (3-day passes and single day passes) are on sale now. Full lineup at the festival's site.

There have also been a number of official afterparties announced. There's one at Williamsburg's new danceclub hot spot Output each night of the fest. The two biggest standouts are Modeselektor and Rudimental DJing Best Buy Theater on August 31 with Delta Heavy (tickets), and Chicago house vet Cajmere (who also plays Warm Up that weekend) at Cielo on August 30 (tickets).

Moderat (aka Modeselektor and Apparat) finally released their second album, Moderat II, this month, and you can stream the whole thing via a Spotify widget below.

For UK duo Bondax, Electric Zoo and Chicago's North Coast Festival (which a bunch of other Electric Zoo artists also play) are their only two North American gigs at the moment, after they recently cancelled their appearances at Warm Up and Camp Bisco, which they would have played in July. Check out their recent single, "Giving It All," below, or download it above.

The PMR-signed Cyril Hahn will also return to NYC when his tour with Ryan Hemsworth hits 88 Palace on October 5.

Nine Inch Nails / Chance the Rapper / the crowd
Nine Inch Nails
Lollapalooza Day 1 - 8/2/2013
Lollapalooza Day 1 - 8/2/2013

Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor breaks into the explicit chorus of "Closer" and a spasm of impressionistic dancing breaks out among the fans stretched out to the south end of Butler Field. Has the Man from the Black Hole of '90s Industrial Music turned into a nostalgia act? Despite a set list dusted with vintage material, Reznor sounds like anything but a relic. The exceptional audio quality of the festival's northermost stage underlines not just the oppressive thrust of Reznor's music, but its eerie subtleties and darkly beautiful colorations as well. After a five-year hiatus, Reznor has retooled the band yet again, with a new album on the way. But everything still revolves around the leader and his exacting standards. A new song declares, "I'm just trying to find my way," but he hardly seems lost. - [Chicago Tribune]
A somewhat soggy start to Lollapalooza on Friday (8/2), but that didn't seem to dampen anyone's spirits at Chicago's Grant Park, where bands played across eight stages. Here's a set of pictures from Friday night, featuring Nine Inch Nails, New Order, Band of Horses, Father John Misty, Chicago's own Chance the Rapper and more. We've got a second set of pics from Friday HERE on the way, with many of the artists not in this set, including ones from BrooklynVegan's hosted portion of the Soundwave Tent.

Lollapalooza continues today (8/3) with a much better weather forecast and sets from The Postal Service, HAIM, The National, Local Natives, and more. If you're going today, be sure to stop by the Soundwave Tent where BrooklynVegan will be hosting from 1 PM - 3 PM with hosts Chris Gethard and Billy Jones and the following guests:

12:40 p.m. - Local Natives (performance and interview)
1:00 p.m. - IO Echo (interview)
1:30 p.m. - Smith Westerns (interview)
2:00 p.m. - Drowners (performance and interview)
2:20 p.m. - School of Rock
2:30 p.m. - Heartless Bastards (performance and interview)
If you're not in Chicago (or in Chicago but not at Lollapalooza), some of today's performances are being streamed live. Here's today's webcast schedule (in Central Time):
2:15PM - BEN HOWARD
3:00PM - COURT YARD HOUNDS
4:00PM - LOCAL NATIVES
5:00PM - ELLIE GOULDING
6:00PM - THE NATIONAL
7:15PM - THE LUMINEERS
8:30PM - THE POSTAL SERVICE
10:00PM - MUMFORD & SONS
UPDATE: Day 2 pics (part 1) and day 2 pics (part 2), and day 3 pics (part 1) and day 3 pics (part 2) are up now too.

Lollapalooza 2012 (more by James Richards IV)
Lollapalooza

After it was already confirmed that Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, The Postal Service, The National, The Killers, and Mumford and Sons were playing Lollapalooza 2013, a pretty promising leak came which appeared to potentially reveal the rest of the lineup, and it turns out that leak was real.

In addition to the previously mentioned artists, Lollapalooza will include Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Kendrick Lamar, Grizzly Bear, The Cure, New Order, Baroness, Beach House, Cat Power, Death Grips, Jessie Ware, Father John Misty, DIIV, Wavves, Alt-J, Hot Chip, Disclosure, Baauer, Palma Violets, Angel Haze, Band of Horses, Crystal Castles and many others.

Haunted Coliseum (via @thizz31)
Haunted Coliseum

As if they didn't take a big enough hit when they found out they lost the Islanders, The Haunted Coliseum, a rave party that went down at Nassau Coliseum on Saturday (10/27) with Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia, DJ Alesso and Otto Knows was cut short due to some pre-Sandy (and unrelated to Sandy) "chaos" caused by drunk teens (between 14 and 18) apparently needing medical assistance less than an hour into the show. Nassau County police Inspector Kenneth Lack said, "We started getting calls for multiple aided cases for highly intoxicated individuals whether it be on alcohol or controlled substances. As soon as it reached a level where it became apparent that something was going desperately wrong, we made the decision to close it down for the good of public safety."

The situation was made worse when when a helicopter pilot decided to land his bird in a grassy area near the coliseum where there were reportedly about 20 people. The 44-year-old pilot was arrested and his helicopter impounded. Needless to say, many of the attendees are unhappy their party was shut down and have been venting their rage on Haunted Coliseum'sFacebook page.

Thriller

Meanwhile, three people died in Madrid last night (10/31) at a massive Halloween party headlined by Steve Aoki where 20,000 revelers crowded into the Madrid Arena which is meant hold half that. El Pais reports that trouble started when a disturbance in the crowd started a stampede towards the exits and the deaths were caused by  "trauma by crushing, possibly having suffered a fall and being trampled." Police are still investigating.

Steve Aoki, who cancelled his show in Bilbao tonight, has issued a statement. You can read it below...

NY Mag

Grizzly Bear are on the cover of the new issue of NY Magazine, which makes two weeks in a row that Brooklyn was prominently featured.

Despite making it into Billboard's Top 10 with their new album, Shields, the band still aren't making a lot of money.

Check out pictures from the show they just played in Chicago with Lower Dens.

And speaking of Brooklyn, get ready for Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas.

"The Artwork of Robert Pollard & Tobin Sprout" is opening in Brooklyn soon. Meanwhile check out our recent Guided by Voices pictures from both Austin and the Deluna Fest in Florida.

Crystal Castles and HEALTH play Roseland on Wednesday (10/3). We're giving away tickets here and on our Facebook too.

Also on Wednesday, M83 plays Hammerstein Ballroom and we're giving away tickets to that on Facebook too. Tickets are also still on sale.

Another Facebook contest: win tickets to see Raveonettes and Melody's Echo Chamber at Webster Hall on Friday (10/5).

The Compact Disc turns 30 years old today. The first CD pressed in America was Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA (though Billy Joe's 52nd Street came out in Japan before that). What was the first CD you bought?

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen, Kenny's Castaways, where he used to play is hosting their final show tonight.

Producer and TV On the Radio member Dave Sitek has launched Federal Prism, "a new record label where Sitek will personally record, mix, produce, and release a series of limited edition 12-inch vinyl picture discs with a uniquely curator-driven perspective. The vinyl will be limited to 500 numbered copies each with a jacket personally hand silkscreened by Sitek."

Federal Prism's first release is "Destroyer" by Telepathe. "The b-side of the vinyl will feature a remix by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor with Alessandro Cortini and Atticus Ross. Sitek adds, "I told Trent I was starting my own label and would love to have him remix something on the first release. I sent him the session and before he actually said 'YES', he sent back this mighty dark space that he, Alessandro and Atticus had built for me! I was shocked and am certain I will have to keep ripping them off for years!"" It's on sale now.

Speaking of Trent Reznor, he says his his band How To Destroy Angels, have "formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP."

Scary: Ryan Adams revealed via Twitter: "Recording a track with my new pal @deadmau5 today. Sounds like BladeRunner starring Don Henley."

More scary: As if it wasn't bad enough that Bruno Mars has been announced as the host of the 10/20 episode of SNL, they're letting him be the musical performer for that episode too!

But here's some good news: Now That's What I Call Music 83 will reportedly be the last in the series.

DJ Shadow @ the Great Escape
DJ Shadow

Instrumental hip hop guru DJ Shadow is set to release his first LP in five years The Less You Know, The Better on September 5. He released the single "I Gotta Rokk" back in May. Check out the video for that track below.

DJ Shadow performed at Glastonbury this past weekend. According to @RadioRassilon, "DJ Shadow in the John peel tent at #Glastonbury - mind boggling. I'm boggled. Boggled flat." We don't have pictures from his set there but we did catch at the Great Escape, also in the UK, in May. As previously seen on the BV Facebook, pictures from that one are in this post.

Those fests were some of many performances Shadow has/had lined up this summer, which is largely being occupied by the touring electronic festival, IDentity Festival in August and early September. IDentity will be headlined by Kaskade, Steve Aoki (who was spotted at the Gay Pride Parade on Sunday), and Steve Lawler. It also includes live sets by Holy Ghost!, Hercules and Love Affair, and Modeselektor. It hits PNC Bank Arts Center in Jersey on 8/14 and Jones Beach in Long Island on 8/21. Tickets are on sale for both.

The lineup for this year's Electric Zoo, on Randall's Island September 4th and 5th, has been updated and now includes Major Lazer, Flying Lotus, Rusko, Steve Aoki and more, which are all listed below. The headliner for night one is Chemical Brothers; night two's is Armin van Buuren. Tickets are on sale.

Major Lazer, who put on a great show, have upcoming shows at Pitchfork Fest and Camp Bisco this summer, plus lots of festivals in Asia and Europe. They recently put out a mixtape with La Roux called LAZERPROOF, which you can get that for free here.

Electric Zoo is Flying Lotus' only US gig currently. His LP Cosmogramma came out earlier this year, and he'll have an EP out before it ends.

Last week I only made it out to Fixed on Friday. While I wasn't floored by Annie Mac and Dada Life's selections, their energy behind the decks was infectious and had the crowd going wild in the basement of the Tribeca Grand. It was really a great time, regardless of whether you were super into the music, or not. This week there is a lot going on. Consider this you warm-up to CMJ...

Electric Zoo (more by Zach Dilgard)
EZ

While from the outside, Electric Zoo (Sept 5-6, 2009) might seem like a 2-day hell, overrun by fake-tanned, heavily hair-gelled masses and their female counterparts, the actual experience (at least for me) was far from it. While my jaw dropped in horror as many of the element described above boarded the ferry to Randall's Island at the 35th Street pier, and I was only further freaked out when the entire boat broke out in a sing-along to "Now That the Love Is Gone" by David Guetta (one of many deejays playing the festival), once I arrived the dread of dealing that all day, subsided.

For starters, the festival grounds were very accommodating size-wise for the number in attendance. When I first arrived around 12:30 on Saturday, there was ample room and even as the day wore on and the grounds filled up, I never felt that I was trudging through a crowd to get where I wanted to go. Along with the size of the venue, the diverse spread of deejays (who were grouped at four different tents/stages vaguely according to similar genre/sound), kept my interaction with club-goers whom I would rarely run into under normal circumstances, to a minimum. In the instances where I was confronted with people straight out of My New Haircut (NSFW!) I couldn't say a bad thing about them. Everyone at the festival seemed to be too happy to be there, and dancing their asses off, to care what was going on around them, or to do anything too outwardly annoying to ruin anyone's time.

Frankie Knuckles / actual members of the crowd
Frankie Knuckles
Steve Angello

"This past labor day weekend in NYC, thousands of dance and electronica music fans gathered together for the first, and hopefully annual Electric Zoo Festival on Randall's Island to celebrate Electronic Music. The festival lineup featured over 50 acts which included Steve Aoki, Busy P, Danny Tenaglia, Benny Benassi, Deadmau5, David Guetta, Markus Schulz, Tom Middleton, Kaskade, and Armin Van Burren over the course of two days....

...On the second day of the festival, house music icon DJ Frankie Knuckles alongside Andy Butler (Hercules & Love Affair) blessed the turntables with a raw and authentic classic house music set that made you feel nothing short of spiritual...

..."Music belongs to everybody," Frankie says after stepping off stage from his Electric Zoo DJ set. "Believe me, If I had the ability I would really just make it possible so that any and everybody could just show up (on the dancefloor)...a lot of times that's all you got to hold onto." To that end, it seems rather fitting that his biggest commercial hit was the ethereal and optimistic Whistle Song, which just might make him the pied piper of dance music who tries to leads the masses to a state of bliss.

Dropping next month is Frankie's Motivation Too album, which is his first compilation in six years. When asked about his own personal tactics for motivation, Frankie notes: "I normally get up early in the morning, like seven or eight o'clock. Musically I'm listening to things that are very spiritual and classical while I'm moving through the morning and getting myself together. I pretty much block out a lot of things that could possibly feed me any kind of negative energy, because my day has to be right...I figure why not get up on the right side of the bed and focus and maybe I'll get through the day and it will be alright."" [MC2D Magazine]

You saw Ryan's pictures from Sunday. More of Zach's pictures from both days of the fest (where he unfortunately missed Lindstrom, James Murphy, Al Doyle, Pat Mahoney, Busy P, DJ Medhi, Junior Boys, Holy Ghost, JDH, Dave P, Andy Butler, and others) (but did capture lots of scariness), below...

Balcony climbin' @ Hard Summer '09 in L.A. Saturday night (downtownlobby)
Hard Summer

A back door of the VIP section, where tickets began at $125, flew open and fans ran in from the parking lot in what [concert-goer Will] Fan described as a "stampede."

"We saw about 200 kids run right through the bar area," said the 35-year-old Sherman Oaks resident. "It was a little scary. I saw the bartender push one kid down, but everyone else just ran around him. Eventually, security was able to stop more people from coming in. But the kids ran out of the bar...and basically hopped over the balcony and onto the floor. Then the music stopped."

The sold-out all-night Hard Summer concert, which featured a lineup that included U.K. dance duo Underworld and Canadian electronic rockers Crystal Castles, was halted at about 10:50 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which cited "hazardous life-safety things taking place inside the event."
[L.A. Times]

Hard Summer '09 @ L.A. Forum (beltran)
Hard Summer
"We were required to shut down Hard Summer at The Forum Saturday [August 8th] night by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. They declared the event a "hazard" after seeing concert-goers jumping from the balcony to the floor. The Inglewood Police Department backed the decision of the Fire Department and assisted in clearing the venue.

While we, the promoters, worked with the authorities to consider other options to continue the concert, ultimately they made the decision to end it. We are happy to report that there were no major injuries.

We are offering refunds to all concert-goers and are deeply disappointed that the fans were not able to see this incredible show come to fruition." [official statement]

Underworld and Chromeo were among those who were supposed to play.

Hard Fest NYC is set to take place October 10th at Terminal 5 where we doubt any problems like that will happen. Crookers and Major Lazer (Soundsystem) headline, and tickets are still on sale.

Trevor Jackson @ Studio B

Last week in dance was a lot of fun despite only going to one event - Primetime meets Fixed at Studio B. I caught most of Eamon Harkin's set in which he masterfully mixed up some disco, house, and techno. House of House, who I hadn't seen before, truly lived up to their name in terms of their selections. The Studio B crowd was feeding off of the duo's enthusiasm as House of House animatedly delivered track after track. As much as I enjoyed their set I was extremely excited and anxious for Trevor Jackson to begin. The set Trevor finally delivered at nearly 2:30 was well worth the wait. For the next hour an a half he played an excellent set that was heavy on house and disco, with some modern subtleties. Despite only being able to identify "Heaven's In the Backseat of My Cadillac" by Hot Chocolate, "Situation" by Yaz, and "Use Me" by Runaway out of the entire set, it was easily one of the better dj sets I've witnessed in '09 thus far.

I have to admit I'm more excited about seeing David Byrne than getting down this weekend, but here are some options if you'd rather not leave the dancing to the man in the big suit:

Sinden at Hiro Ballroom, NYC - April 10, 2008 (Nicky Digital)
Sinden

Lately I've hit a spell where deejays I am really looking forward to seeing are very disappointing. Last weekend the spell continued...

Saturday I was quite excited to see Justice's Xavier de Rosnay deejay at Le Royale. I'd had a great time hearing him drop a mix of very current dance music with tons of unexpected pop and classics at Studio B following the Oct. 20th Justice show at Terminal 5. Unfortunately something was missing at Le Royale on Saturday. For the most part his set can be broken down like this - the first hour was mainly electro tracks, the second was mainly pop. Things could have been a lot better if more of the electro and pop were played together, and if more new electro tracks were played - I still love the Soulwax remix of Justice's Phantom Part II, but I remember first getting really excited about that track last April.

Thursday night saw the same problem with Steve Aoki dropping all the standard electro fare, heard over and over for the past year. I left mid-set which I am pretty reluctant to do, but it honestly was that bad. Thankfully the night wasn't a complete wash as Sinden spun an intensely banging set of grimey, UK-styled tunes that had everybody losing it. A-trak's set that followed was good as well, but a little less intense. For me the highlight of his set was when he dropped the Fred Falke Remix of Golden Cage by The Whitest Boy Alive (download it above).
