Tammar

Bloomington, IN psych-poppers Tammar released their new album, Visits on September 20 via Suicide Squeeze. The album's got hints of the kind of psych-rock channelled by The Standells, though some more modern influences come through too, especially on the beachy "Summer Fun." Check out the video for "The Last Line" below, and grab the MP3 of that song and "Yung Jun" above.

The band will play a record release show in their hometown of Bloomington, IN this Saturday (10/1) and have a short run of NYC shows coming up at the end of October. They play Cameo Gallery on October 28 with Heaven's Gate, Pianos on October 29 with Gross Relations and Little Racer, and they open for Moonface at Bowery Ballroom on October 30. Tickets are on sale now for the Pianos show and are still available for the Bowery Ballroom show with Moonface. Check Cameo's site for updates on that show.

JEFF

As you hopefully know, JEFF the Brotherhood are visiting again this weekend, playing tonight (6/11) at Death by Audio, Friday in Asbury Park and Sunday (6/13) at Santos with Quintron & Miss Pussycat. What I failed to mention in This Week in Indie is Jake and Jamin have a new 7" that's part of Suicide Squeeze's new singles series.

The a-side is a new song, "Mellow Out" (a phrase I don't think of normally with JEFF), and the b-side is "Heavy Days" which is the title track to their debut LP from last year, which is now in its third vinyl printing (complete with new back cover photo). The single isn't out till July 20 but you can stream it. The single is limited to 750 copies, 250 of which are being pressed on glow-in-the-dark vinyl! That's pretty rad I think. Pre-order it here.

Other releases on the Suicide Squeeze Singles Series will include Coathangers, Iron & Wine and Memoryhouse. All JEFF tourdates are below.

TAAS
TAAS

Minus The Bear are touring and working on new material. Their Suicide Squeeze labelmates have been busy as well!

These Arms Are Snakes, who we already knew were playing Mercury Lounge on 9/26, have scheduled a date the night before (9/25) at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn. TAAS also recently dropped the digital single "Washburn" from their previously released split with All The Saints. Vinyl split cover art below.

Russian Circles currently dont have any NYC dates, but the band is hitting the road in late October, hitting up Fun Fun Fun Fest along the way. Russian Circles have a new long-player on the way, Geneva, due on 10/20. Dig on "Malko" from that record above.

Full Russian Circles and TAAS dates, below...

Coathangers

The Coathangers played in the den upstairs at Pianos to a jammed crowd of hipsters during the Sub Pop/Hardly Art/Suicide Squeeze CMJ night on Friday, October 24th. As previously mentioned, the Atlanta all-girl group recently started calling Suicide Squeeze their label home.

The chicks reminded me of the ultimate punk girl band- the type that subsists off of cigarettes and reverb, who smashed barbies into smithereens as kids, and that currently has a revolving group of 20 boytoys (or girls) knocking on their door at all times. Their songs were loud and frenetic- with statements that were totally non-sequitur - the way punk used to be before top 40 came along and sat its fat ass on originality. Like a stale joke, they had My Little Ponies and candles set up at the front of the stage like some sort of voodoo warning: stay away feeble ones. And the crowd went wild. The thrill lay in the fact that, though you couldn't clap, snap or swivel to even one note, (though the drunken ones tried), the music was angry, funny, sadistic, and bold. Hell, they've got lyrics about nestling in boobies and shit and other f*ed up, fun pretexts-(but if you're easily offended- don't worry-because you could't really hear what they are saying anyway.) Plus, as if to confuse you or amuse you even more, the chicks just kept revolving instruments and places and microphones like the set was musical chairs and the songs were just preludes to a switch. The ended with multi-colored confetti and riffs. The crowd? Still wild.

To sum The Coathangers up: it isn't pop, it isn't pretty, and it may not even sound good. It's tattooed punk chicks with attitude and if you don't like it, go home, they definitely don't give a damn.

The Coathangers 8:45- 9:15pm

Downstairs room:

Three labels, one small CMJ show.

Sub Pop has Death Vessel, Oxford Collapse and The Ruby Suns.

Pretty & Nice and Dutchess and the Duke represent Sub Pop's sister label Hardly Art who now represents six artists in total including Le Loup who are opening for Stereolab at Irving Plaza on October 4th.

sBACH (member of Hella), Cotton Jones (ex-Page France) and The Coathangers (friends with the Black Lips) are reppin' Suicide Squeeze. The Coathangers signing was announced September 4th. Cotton Jones was announced in August.

Sub Pop usually does a sell-out show at the larger Bowery Ballroom, so they're definitely taking it easy this year. Merge's is small too.

Human HighwayHuman Highway

We are very proud to announce the debut release from Toronto's Human Highway, a duo featuring Islands' frontman Nick Thorburn, alongside seminal Canadian songwriter, Jim Guthrie, entitled "Moody Motorcycle."

To celebrate the album's release, courtesy of the good folks at Suicide Squeeze Records, the band has announced their first ever live performances for the lucky few in the New York Metropolitan area. Appearing as co-headliners w/ Harper Simon, Thorburn and Guthrie will bring Human Highway, for the first time ever, to New York's Cake-Shop on Monday, September 15th, and the lovely Joe's Pub on Tuesday, September 16th.

Joe's Pub tickets don't seem to be available as of the time I'm writing this. Cake Shop probably won't have advance tix.

Stream the entire Human Highway album on their MySpace. The tracklist is below.

"Human Highway" is also "a 1982 comedy film starring and co-directed by Neil Young under his pseudonym Bernard Shakey." Neil Young also just announced some shows.

Nick Thorburn's other band Islands is playing a NYC show on August 23rd.

They have a few tour west coast dates which are down below.

The other project with the reamining two Brothers (as well as J Clark of the fallen Pretty Girls Make Graves) Jaguar Love, is readying their new LP Take Me To The Sea, due August 19th on Matador. The band, who recently played Siren Fest, have dropped a new video for "Highways of Gold" (below), and will embark on a tour with The Faint, skipping the previously mentioned Terminal 5 show (on sale here) and adding a solo date at Southpaw on August 19th. Tickets are still available for that one. Full tour schedule below.
