The Cult aren't playing ATP, but they're also performing a full album live in NY tonight.

Fucked Up aren't playing tonight, but they're also performing a full album in NY, and tickets went on sale today.

Super Furry Animals warm up for ATP with a show at Highline Ballroom tonight (and Maxwell's tomorrow). This one is opened by local boys Real Estate and The March Fourth.

Real Estate also have a show scheduled for Saturday at Silent Barn with Desolation Wilderness.

Melvins play ATP on Saturday. Tonight they're at Nokia Theatre with Weedeater who played a semi-secret gig at The Charleston last night.

Jay-Z plays a sold-out 9/11 benefit at Madison Square Garden. If you can't be there, you can watch it commercial free and live on Fuse (9pm). Two nights ago Jay-Z played a much smaller show at Gramercy Theatre.

The Intelligence is in from Seattle to play Market Hotel with Golden Triangle, Wild Yaks, Arrington De Dionyso and Smarts. The Intelligence are also at Cake Shop on Sunday.

A Place to Bury Strangers, Sian Alice Group, Nine 11 Thesaurus, Experimental Dental School and Reading Rainbow are on the bill for the second night of The Maze at Death By Audio.

Good thing Glasvegas frontman James Allan was found, and good thing it was in NY because he and his band are set to open for Kings of Leon, not to be confused with Kings of Convenience, at the Izod Center on Saturday and again at Nassau Coliseum on Monday.

Glenn Branca Ensemble play with Paranoid Critical Revolution at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Tomorrow Branca talks with artist Dan Graham. Glenn played PS1 last Saturday.

If it stops raining, PS1 is again an option for this Saturday.

'This is the best band retreat yet...'
Sunset Rubdown

"By no means am I a poet or a great lyricist, I just like to include some sort of beauty in the lyrics," [Sunset Rubdown's Spencer Krug] says. "Sometimes I'm trying to make them more straight-forward, but it's still in me to return to the metaphor and I'm not very good at it. My friend Dan [Bejar - aka Canadian solo artist Destroyer] is one of the few people who can pull off poetry and music at the same time. The imagery isn't anything complex. I'd like to get to the point where I could create something like that, without hiding behind metaphors. I'm my own worst critic, right?"

"[With the new record] it's turned very much into a collaborative band - they're not just hired guns," explains Krug with a hint of relief. "I'm still the principal songwriter. I bring my ideas to them and then they add their own colours and flavours to them and it becomes Sunset Rubdown. If I was to sit down and record with just a piano and a guitar it sounds all right but it makes me miss the band."
[Spins and Needles]

Spencer and Sunset Rubdown kick off a month-long tour of Europe on September 2nd. When they return, they'll be playing shows across North America through October. That tour comes to NYC for an October 16th show at Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom. Tickets go on sale Saturday, August 8th at noon. After missing the show at Studio B during the Northside Festival (which apparently was a disaster anyway), I can't wait for this one.

The group's great new record, Dragonslayer, came out on June 23rd on Jagjaguwar. "Idiot Heart" from that album is above.

Dan Bejar, Krug's Swan Lake collaborator shouted out above, just finished a short solo Destroyer tour. He played XX Merge in North Carolina, and a July 30th NYC show at Bowery Ballroom...

"Last night I had the privilege to see my favorite band/singer Destroyer at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. I've been to countless shows over the past 18yrs or so and I've even seen Destroyer a number of times, but last night was special. He played material off of each of his EIGHT albums and even a song from a side project called Swan Lake, AND he did it all solo with an acoustic guitar. I've always been partial to a sripped down lo-fi sound anyway, so in my opinion, it was best like that. Not to take away from what the band contributes, but it really was amazing this way. So luckily I brought a pad to do a few quick drawings (in the dark) as I always think it would be great to reportage these events and then some how I never seem to. Glad I did last night." [Greg Betza]
Destroyer is releasing a new 12-inch vinyl EP, titled Bay of Pigs, on August 18th via Merge. Bejar will be back in the fall for a Wordless Music show at the Miller Theatre on September 12th, as well as an appearance at Pop Montreal. All tour dates below.

EP art, tracklist, the setlist from Destroyer's XX Merge show, and Sunset Rubdown live videos and tour dates, are below...

Sunset Rubdown @ Studio B - June 12, 2009 (in our hands)
Sunset Rubdown

-tons of sound problems. extremely frustrating for the crowd and the band. vocals kept dropping out.
-studio b could be blamed? venue sucks. also extremely hot.
-one of the lead guitarists got stuck in one of the stage pieces, couldn't get himself unstuck. very sad.
-spencer- many "best show ever"s, very sarcastically
-lots of people yelling out "JUST PLAY ANYWAY". band became visibly frustrated. i thought spencer was going to lose it at times.
-new song was just okay. the rest of the set was great. wish there was more stuff from older albums, but what can you do.

Swan Lake

Swan Lake

Have Swan Lake (the supergroup composed of Spencer Krug, Dan Bejar and Carey Mercer) ever played a live show? I don't think so. While we wait for that to happen, we at least have shows by some of the members' individual projects -- the projects that made Swan Lake interesting enough to care about in the first place.

Spencer Krug's band Sunset Rubdown plays Studio B in Brooklyn on June 12th (no general admission ticket info yet). The show is part of the Northside Festival, and part of a much larger tour with fellow Canadians Elfin Saddle.

Since arriving in Montreal in 2006, Elfin Saddle has been steadily gaining audience and acclaim for their original and emotive live performances. Having released Gigantic Mother/Wounded Child on Kill Devil Hills Records in early 2008, they are proud to be releasing their follow-up, Ringing For The Begin Again, on Constellation. A recent addition to their recordings and live performances is Nathan Gage (Shapes and Sizes, owner of Phonopolis record store in Montreal), rounding out their sound with thick drones and subtle bursts on double-bass and tuba. [Core band members] Emi and Jordan are currently working on an extensive stop-motion/time-lapse film, featuring the growth of plants and the animation of a large collection of scavenged objects. [PR]
The MP3 on the top of this post is from Elfin Saddle's new Constellation album. All Elfin/Rubdown tour dates below.

Dan Bejar will be playing as Destroyer (solo) on a few May dates with Azita. He'll also be visiting NYC this summer for a solo show at Bowery Balllroom on July 30th with Iran. Tickets for the NYC show go on sale Friday at noon. All dates below..

The Dodos @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple (more by Natasha Ryan)
The Dodos

Sunset Rubdown and The Dodos, two of the bigger names listed in The Northside Festival lineup, will both be playing their June Brooklyn shows at Studio B. Sunset Rubdown is Friday, June 12th (the same night as John Vanderslice at MHOW), and The Dodos are Sunday, June 14th (the same night as Bill Callahan at MHOW)

When Spencer Krug isn't playing with Sunset Rubdown, he can be found with his other bands Wolf Parade and Swan Lake. Swan Lakes's new album "Enemy Mine" is out now. Grab some MP3's.

You might assume that the Dodos Northside show is the Frenchkiss Records showcase (like I did at first), but it's not. Frenchkiss's own show will be something much smaller at Bruar Falls earlier in the week. I think we CAN assume that Sean Bones, also listed on the Northside lineup, will be one of the performers at that one.

Sunset Rubdown will be touring Europe later this month. The Dodos will be at Sasquatch in May. All tour dates below...

Northside Festival

Oh, hey, look it's Monday and it's rainy and miserable outside. Which is why you're seated comfortably in front of your computer looking for things to brighten your otherwise awful day. So the timing is perfect, it seems, for our first list of confirmed performers at this year's Northside Festival. For those of you who will only continue reading if you can be guaranteed a certain level of awesomeness, Sunset Rubdown, Bishop Allen, The Dodos, Bill Callahan, Vivian Girls, The Van Pelt, Brightblack Morning Light, O'Death, Asobi Seksu, and John Vanderslice are all included.

Now, you want to get yourself a badge, obviously, so that you can go see all this amazing music right in your own backyard, and so that you can take advantage of all the food and drink specials that'll be included. Good thing they'll only cost you $45 if you act now. We're selling a limited amount at this price, so don't sleep on it, folks. (Badge-holders must be 21 or older as of right now, but don't worry, kids, we've got some stuff in the works for you as well.) [Northside Festival]

The Northside Festival runs from June 11-14 in all or most of the venues in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. A badge lets you jump around from venue to venue on a first come, first served basis. The badge sale page says:
FULL FESTIVAL 4-DAY PASS!
A very limited number of badges will be available at this discounted price! (Arrive to venues early to guarantee entry)

4 days, 30+ venues, dozens of galleries, lots of showcases, hundreds of bands - check northsidefestival.com often for updates!
Redeem your hard ticket at the Northside Registration Booth (booth location TBD at northsidefestival.com) to obtain your badge & other Northside goodies.

Each venue will be letting a certain amount of badges in per show in addition to individual ticket sales. I'm sure it's probably a good deal, but without the exact schedule, the badge might also be a bit of a gamble...

Phosphorescent

As I hid in the comments yesterday, Parenthetical Girls weren't able to make it to NYC to open for Sunset Rubdown at MHOW tonight (Sept 16)...

"due to gross mechanical incompetence on the part of an auto mechanic, our engine basically blew up last night on our way to Boise. We towed back to Portland. The mechanic has to rebuild the engine, and it won't be done until either Monday or Tuesday. We will not be able to make it to the first Sunset Rubdown show. Hopefully we can make it to Philadelphia." [Zac from PG]
Phosphorescent takes their place. Tickets are still available.

Sunset Rubdown also play Mercury Lounge on Wednesday.

Phosphorescent also play a Rooftop Films shindig at 350 Grand st. in Manhattan on Thursday.

Parenthetical Girls

"To celebrate the release of Entanglements, their first album for Tomlab, Parenthetical Girls asked some of their friends to cover and remix some of the songs from the album - the first two offerings came from labelmates No Kids and fellow NW avant heroes The Dead Science, who covered "This Regrettable End" and "Young Eucharists" respectively. Now Deerhoof have covered the song "Gut Symmetries" and we use the term "covered" loosely because they kept Zac Pennington's original vocals intact.

Arcade FireWolf Parade

NY Magazine: What do you see as the biggest aesthetic and philosophical differences between you guys and the Arcade Fire?

Spencer Krug: You want me to compare Wolf Parade to Arcade Fire right now?

NY Magazine: You don't have to.

Spencer Krug: I think the differences are huge. If you want to talk about the sonic aesthetic, they have more members, they have more ambition, more of a drive for perfection than we will ever have, so they sound bigger and they sound better. [Laughs] They will always sound tighter and more thought-out. Arcade Fire has everything just so. And that is to their benefit as a band, probably.

We're friends, but we're very different in terms of music and even probably politics, and how we approach our place in the world, if that makes sense. I don't mean politics, like what they stand for, but the way they operate within this industry. They're just more successful and have had to deal with things that we'll never have to deal with it, like whether or not to play Saturday Night Live.

Wolf Parade play Terminal 5 in NYC tonight (July 31) and tomorrow (August 1). Spencer will also be will be back in NYC to play two more shows in September with Sunset Rubdown.

In related "news", Radiohead & Arcade Fire are BFF.

Tickets are on sale (@ noon) for a September 16th Sunset Rubdown show at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn and for one the very next day at the much smaller Mercury Lounge. You don't have to wait until September to see Spencer though. Wolf Parade are touring too and they'll bring Spencer to NYC for two shows at the end of this month. All SR tour dates below...

Deep Sleepover

Last month, we looked at the Swedish band Melpo Mene (who never ended up making it to SXSW by the way) and this month we'll be highlighting an artist a little closer to (my Montreal) home.

Sunset RubdownSunset Rubdown are one of the best bands going (in my opinion), and while a lot of the pub goes to Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug (top right), the rest of the group has musical endeavors that are just as exciting and adventurous as the SR mothership. Those include Jordan Robson-Cramer (bottom left) who is behind XY Lover and Magic Weapon in addition to playing in Miracle Fortress, and our spotlight for this month: Michael Doersken (bottom right) and his musical project, Deep Sleepover.

As the name suggests, Deep Sleepover is a mellow affair. The music resides behind a soft pall of reverb, a mid-tempo, wistful contemplation never going above a whisper. The debut album Voyage To The Other World - A Tale Of A Liar is definitely a mood record. On songs like "Catapillakilla," and "Through and Through," the familiar guitar sound and styling that greets the listener at the beginning of Random Spirit Lover is reimagined, taken out of the sardonic and surreal world and placed in more gentle hands.

The album has been a real find for me in the last six months - lots of steady listening. I sat down with Michael to chat about the record, the genesis of the sound and future plans for the band.

* * *

How long has Deep Sleepover been a project of yours ?

Michael Doerksen: I gave the music a name about a year ago. I've been writing music for awhile, now. I haven't had the opportunity to record anything. I had to give it a name and develop it slowly. So, about a year now.

Night Falls over KortedalaJens Lekman's Night Falls Over Kortedala hit #1 on the Swedish pop album charts, and finally gets a US release tomorrow. AOL is streaming it for free right now.

Indie music fans have plenty of worthy choices among the week's releases. I can strongly recommend the Fiery Furnaces new disc Widow City, Enon's Grass Geysers...Carbon Clouds, Doveman's With My Left Hand I Raise the Dead, Beirut's The Flying Club Cup, Band of Horses' Cease to Begin, and Scout Niblett's This Fool Can Die Now.

A must-have reissue for Viva Voce fans this week is the double CD release of Lovers, Lead the Way/The Heat Can Melt Your Brain, completely remastered with bonus tracks. Other notable reissues include three discs by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, two by the Sun City Girls, and Enon's Believo!

For your winter holiday mix CD needs, the Smithereens follow their full album cover of the Beatle's Meet the Beatles with Christmas With the Smithereens.

Have I left anything noteworthy off the list? What new music releases can you recommend this week? What should I avoid? What are you picking up?

Wolf Parade @ Warsaw, Brooklyn, NY - Aug 19, 2007 (CRED)
Wolf Parade @ WarsawWolf Parade @ Warsaw

It felt like forever since I last saw Wolf Parade - it's possible it was. I'm glad though, because everything they played last night at Warsaw sounded so fresh. Actually, a lot of it was. They played a bunch of brand new material that gives me high hopes for their new album (which according to Dan's calculations should be done by now). We also heard all the hits, and everyone was going nuts - lots of energy in the room. I drank one too many Polish beers. Great show.

On Saturday (one day earlier), Wolf Parade played seven songs in a parking lot at 4pm (Dan said "am", but it was "pm") as part of the Download Festival in Boston (a festival that did not sell out). The setlist from that show names five of the new songs. Modest Mouse, Guster, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Apollo Sunshine also played the festival - so did Neko Case, Band of Horses and Bang Camaro.

The next Wolf Parade-related NYC shows are the Sunset Rubdown ones in October. Tickets are on sale. Wolf Parade are in Philly tonight. None of them - not even Handsome Furs - will be back for CMJ. More tour dates, below....

Handsome Furs in Toronto - June 8, 2007 (CRED)
Handsome Furs

Wolf Parade's upcoming show at Warsaw in Brooklyn is still sold out, and Handsome Furs' August 7th show at Mercury Lounge is still not.

Sunset Rubdown are playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 8th. They're also playing Bowery Ballroom the next day, and touring. As previously reported, Sunset Rubdown have a new album coming out that was produced by the guy from The Besnard Lakes. The Besnard Lakes are in NYC this weekend, and are playing a couple of shows with Handsome Furs later in the month.

The latest tour dates for everyone, below....

Besnard Lakes

I'm not sure why, but I've mostly been silent up until now about The Besnard Lakes' great new CD Are The Dark Horse. Not only has the CD been in regular rotation, many of the songs regularly make their way on to my mixtapes, and on to my Sirius radio show. Like Grizzly Bear and Panda Bear, the BEsnARd lakes have the word "bear" in their name, and are heavily influenced by the Beach Boys. And like those bears, the BEsnARd lakes come highly recommended by Pitchfork and other critics alike.

Jace from the Besnard Lakes (also a studio guy) doesn't have much to recommend himself, but can say that the new Sunset Rubdown album that he "made" is "amazing" and "really, really good". It was also just announced that the Sunset Rubdown record he's talking about will in fact be coming out on the very same label he released his Besnard Lakes' album on:

Jagjaguwar to Release SUNSET RUBDOWN's "Random Spirit Lover" in October

"Random Spirit Lover" is the new full-length record following their critically acclaimed 2006 album, "Shut Up I Am Dreaming", that was released on Absolutely Kosher. Plans are in the works for a 3 to 4 week North American tour in October, in support of "Random Spirit Lover". The album will be physically released in both the CD and vinyl formats.

Back to Besnard Lakes...

I am happy to, not only announce some Bensard Lakes tour dates, but also to announce that the Montreal band will be playing a free NYC show that I sort of set up.

DAN
Tickets are still on sale for the upcoming Handsome Furs shows in May. More music @ their MySpace. Album out on May 22nd. Dan also had a drum machine stolen which sucks.

DANTE
Billboard is reporting that" Wolf Parade guitarist Dante DeCaro has joined forces with percussionist Lindy Gerrard to form Johnny And The Moon, which will release its self-titled debut on June 12 via micro-indie Kill Devil Hills." CMJ is reporting that the album comes out October 24, 2007. The weird part is that Stereogum says it came out in October 2006 (Canada) and January 2007 (US). The label agrees with the October 2006 date. Pitchfork reviewed it in November 2006. OK.
