Earlier this year, Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan released his first solo album, Non Believers. Now he's released a one-track instrumental remix version of it called Staring At Your Hologram. Here's how Mac puts it:
Staring At Your Hologram is an album-length instrumental deconstruction / revision & remix of my Non-Believers record which came out in May 2015. The songs are sometimes still recognizable in their new shapes but have been sewn together into one long track.Listen below.
For the most part I took away the drums and the vocals, rearranged some parts and brought instruments to the fore that in the original album were more of a bed for the guitars and vocals. Tape echo and reverb have been judiciously applied. If the most obvious influences on Non-Believers are bands like New Order or the Cocteau Twins, then for this version of the album i was drawing on a different part of the 80s landscape and trying to imagine what it would sound like if Arthur Russell or Cluster made an album by remixing the basic tracks. Unlike a record with singing and words and super-linear songs this is meant more as something you can put on and either pay attention to, or not.
Mac has a few solo dates coming up, but first Superchunk play two NYC shows (both sold out). The first is the stacked Ground Control 15th anniversary show at Webster Hall on 12/2 (with Titus Andronicus, Rainer Maria, Kurt Vile, Parquet Courts and many more) and the second is an intimate headlining show on 12/3 at Baby's All Right. Since we last spoke, All Dogs were added to that show which is a good fit for Superchunk. If you have tickets, it's worth showing up for them.
Meanwhile, All Dogs are on tour now with Frankie Cosmos, and that tour hits NYC this weekend at The Marlin Room at Webster Hall on Sunday (11/22). That show also has Epoch bands Eskimeaux and Florist, and tickets are still available. Updated dates are listed below.
All Dogs singer Maryn Jones is also a member of Saintseneca, who just announced a tour with Thao & the Get Down Stay Down and Little Scream.

As mentioned, Superchunk will be in NYC for Ground Control Touring's big 15th Anniversary extravaganza that will take over all of Webster Hall (main room, Marlin Room, and Studio) on December 2 with sets from Kurt Vile, Waxahatchee, Steve Gunn, Parquet Courts, The Felice Brothers, Rainer Maria, Torres, Titus Andronicus, Beach Fossils, Speedy Ortiz, Hop Along, Porches, Frankie Cosmos and more. Tickets are still available.
Superchunk will stick around the next day (December 3) to play Baby's All Right. That should be a very fun show and tickets for that go on sale Friday (11/6) at noon. Those are the band's only scheduled shows right now.

Superchunk's Mac McCaughan has released an acoustic Halloween-themed cover of "When The Evening Comes" by Bobby Steele's post-Mistfits band The Undead. It's not the first time a Superchunk-related project has covered something Misfits-related at this time of year. Listen below.

Booking agency Ground Control Touring turns 15 this year, and they'll be celebrating that anniversary with a seriously stacked NYC show on December 2 at Webster Hall.
The show will take over all three rooms, and include Conor Oberst, Superchunk, Kurt Vile, Waxahatchee, Steve Gunn, Parquet Courts, The Felice Brothers, Rainer Maria, Torres, Titus Andronicus, Beach Fossils, Speedy Ortiz, Hop Along, Porches, Frankie Cosmos and more. Tickets go on sale Friday (10/23) at 10 AM with a presale starting Thursday (10/22) at 10 AM (password = GCT15).

As you may know, there's a new documentary on legendary record label Amphetamine Reptile on the way called The Color of Noise. In conjunction with that, AmRep will reissue some of the highlights of their catalog on vinyl starting this December. Here are the details:
MVD Entertainment and the legendary Amphetamine Reptile Records has partnered with Robel Films to release the documentary The Color of Noise, a film that looks into the history of the label and its founder Tom "Haze" Hazelmyer. MVD and AmRep will also re-issue some of the best releases from the catalog on vinyl and CD starting in Dec 2015 and continuing into 2016 and beyond. The initial round of releases includes the first vinyl edition of the legendary Halo of Flies' Music for Insect Minds on double LP, the Cows' classic Cunning Stunts and a 3 LP set of the infamous Dope Guns 'n Fucking in the Streets compilations featuring Mudhoney, Helmet, Melvins, Tad, Tar, Superchunk and lots more. Also, the soundtrack to the The Color of Noise will be released on limited edition 150 gram color vinyl for Record Store Day (November 27th).We've also got the premiere of a clip from the documentary featuring Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra talking about Mudhoney. "People look back a Nirvana or Soundgarden as what kind of launched the whole grunge mania, but for us underground and the vinyl junkies it was one song, it was 'Touch Me I'm Sick' by Mudhoney." Rat Fist / Pianos Become The Teeth / Single Mothers
The three 2015 BrooklynVegan SXSW day parties at Red 7 continued on Friday (3/20), once again bringing a handful of bands to the venue's two stages from noon to 6 PM. This one was co-presented with Invisible Oranges.
Unfortunately, Walter Schreifels' band Vanishing Life had to cancel at the last minute due to illness, so Creepoid were moved from the outside stage to the inside stage and the show got a slightly later start. But other than that (and some rain), day 2 went off without a hitch.
Philly's Creepoid, who since ran into some legal trouble, started the day on a psychedelic note, with hazy smoke machines filling the room and their bass and their swirly logo (emblazoned on their bass drum) lit up from inside the drum. It was the perfect setting for their rocking shoegaze. After them it was Kevin Devine & the Goddamn Band. The band's currently a power trio, and while Kevin's equally (or better) known for acoustic singer/songwriter stuff, they stuck mostly to their harder material which was a great fit for the day's bill. After them was The Velvet Teen, the shapeshifting rock band who are about to release their first full length in nine years on Topshelf. They played mostly stuff off that album, and the new songs sound good: like a mix of their indie rock early years and the artier tendencies they took on later on.
After Velvet Teen, the inside stage went officially into heavy mode with Canadian punks Single Mothers. They were in beast mode as usual and got a good amount of the crowd rowdy as well, with a handful of people up front shouting along. Then came their Canadian neighbors KEN mode who have a new bassist and a new album on the way that they previewed a handful of songs from. The new stuff has them sounding a little less metallic and a little more AmRep noise rock. It sounded great. They were followed by Power Trip, who recall a handful of early thrash and crossover bands but sound way too urgent to come off as retro. Like they tend to do, they had the whole room turned into a total madhouse. Wrapping up the inside stage was United Nations, one of Geoff Rickly's current bands. Their album makes a joke out of punk rock (while also being a killer punk album), and they did the same at their show, pairing their crushing set with stage banter that sarcastically poked fun at things like McDonald's' presence at SXSW. And for one song, Geoff broke out his old mask.
Meanwhile, the outside stage began around 12:30 with Rat Fist, a trio featuring members of No Age and Pissed Jeans who played a solid set indebted to garage and early punk. They were followed by Swedish post-punks Makthaverskan, who are currently on their first US tour and were one of the bands we were very excited to finally check out. They sounded great, and their singer's excitable stage presence was fun to watch too. Then came their Run for Cover labelmates Pity Sex, whose hard-hitting shoegaze sounded as good as ever. Up next was Pianos Become the Teeth (who share a rhythm section with United Nations), who played an intense set pulling almost entirely from their newest album, the post-hardcore band's first without screaming. Then the day ended with two veterans: first Mac McCaughan of Superchunk who previewed his upcoming debut solo album, and then shoegazers Swervedriver who just put out their first album since 1998 that (perhaps thanks to bands like Pity Sex and Creepoid) doesn't sound dated at all.

The Friday inside show begins with Walter Schreifels' (of Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Rival Schools, etc) new band with two Trail of Dead members, Vanishing Life, followed by a full-band set by long-running singer/songwriter Kevin Devine (who's in the midst of a series of splits with Nada Surf's Matthew Caws, Perfect Pussy's Meredith Graves and more). Then comes The Velvet Teen, who just announced their first LP since 2006 on Topshelf Records. After that, the inside stage gets heavier, with snotty Canadian punks Single Mothers, sludgey post-hardcore band KEN mode, crossover thrashers Power Trip, and finally the screamo band of former Thursday singer Geoff Rickly, United Nations.
Outside, the day begins with Philly shoegazers Creepoid (who have a new LP coming), followed by Rat Fist, the new-ish punk band with No Age and Pissed Jeans members. Then it's Swedish post-punks Makthaverskan, their shoegazey Run for Cover labelmates Pity Sex, and atmospheric post-hardcore band Pianos Become the Teeth (who also have members in United Nations). The day wraps up with two veterans: Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan (who has his debut solo LP on the way) and reunited shoegazers Swervedriver.

Mac McCaughan has shared a song from his forthcoming solo debut, Non Believers, which is out May 5 via Merge. "Lost Again" is a lovely, heartfelt number with the Superchunk frontman's propensity for hooks still apparent in this pared-down setting. It's a really nice song and you can listen below.

The Replacements recently announced their first full US tour since 1991, and there's since been a couple updates. A second LA date was added, and though there's still nothing for NYC, the nearby Philly show just got a even more exciting with Superchunk being added as an opener. J. Roddy Walston & the Business are opening that one too, and tickets go on sale at noon on Friday (2/20). Updated dates are listed, with the Philly show flyer, below.
Superchunk singer Mac McCaughan also has a solo album and tour on the way, including a NYC show on May 16 at Baby's All Right with Flesh Wounds (tickets). Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster also has shows with Best Show buddy Tom Scharpling, including four at The Bell House (sold out except for 3/12 late show).

Twenty-five years into his career, Superchunk's Mac McCaughan will release Non-Believers, his first solo album under his own name, on May 5 via Merge. (Portastatic began as a solo project but later became an actual band.) On it, he's exploring the sounds of the introspective side of early-'80s post-punk, when bands began "using keyboards and drum machines to relate through their music a disaffection or alienation." Pre-orders of the album are up now, and there will be a single, "Box Batteries / Whatever Light," out in April. You can check out a trailer for the LP, below.
Mac will be on tour this spring, playing Baby's All Right on May 16 with Flesh Wounds. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/13) at noon. You may remember Mac played Baby's All Right's second day in existence, which was a Brooklynvegan CMJ party.

Superchunk just wrapped up the few 2014 dates they had scheduled, including Riot Fest Chicago in September and The Jam Room Music Festival in Columbia this past weekend (10/11), but singer Mac McCaughan has an upcoming show scheduled. He'll play NYC during CMJ on October 23 at HiFi Bar, the bar on Avenue A that used to be Brownies (where Superchunk have played) which only rarely hosts live music now. The show will be opened by J Fernandez (whose new EP comes out this week), and $8 tickets are on sale now.
Mac played solo at BV's CMJ show last year and at the Merge showcase in 2012, making this his third solo appearance at CMJ in a row. Watch a video of him playing "Learned to Surf" at last year's show, below...

Mineral / Patti Smith / Superchunk
Riot Fest Chicago wrapped up this past Sunday (9/14) with sets from The Cure, Weezer (playing Blue Album), Primus, Social Distortion, Cheap Trick (playing Heaven Tonight), Patti Smith, Mudhoney, Hot Snakes, Mineral, Lucero, Naked Raygun (playing Throb Throb), La Dispute, Superchunk, The Hold Steady, Kurt Vile, Bouncing Souls, The Front Bottoms, The Menzingers and many more.
I arrived at the final day of the festival to find New Jersey punk heroes The Bouncing Souls already on the Roots Stage, and NJ folk punks The Front Bottoms getting set to perform on the Rebel Stage. Having seen the former a few times, I went for the latter band and heard "Flashlight" as I approached the stage. Their early afternoon-yet-rabid crowd screamed the lyrics along to the song's stop-start chorus. The tongue-in-cheek Talon of the Hawk opener "Au Revoir (Adios)" came next, followed by mix of songs from that album and their 2011 self-titled LP. --ZP
Kurt Vile & The Violators were the next band I caught, over at the Riot Stage. Given that Sunday beared even better weather than Saturday had, opening with "Wakin on a Pretty Day" was an apt choice in full sun. The Violators proceeded to deliver a low-key and enjoyable set that touched on Wakin on a Pretty Daze, Smoke Ring for My Halo, and Childish Prodigy. After a bit of KV and co., I headed over to the Rebel Stage to catch The Hold Steady. The NYC crew kicked things off with "I Hope This Whole Thing Didn't Frighten You" from this year's Teeth Dreams, followed by the Boys and Girls in America favorite "Stuck Between Stations." The band flew by their usual M.O. -- flexing some muscle without coming off as too cheesy -- while pulling out tunes from their back catalog. --ZP
Next I went to catch Superchunk, and I arrived at the Riot Stage a bit prior to their set. In the meantime, I caught the last few songs of Billy Bragg's performance on the nearby Roots Stage. Before playing "The Milkman of Human Kindness," Bragg shared that he's out to become "the Pete Seegar of punk" and hopes to be performing into his 90s. He turned "There Is Power in a Union" into a sing-along and finished off with "A New England." Superchunk began with the No Pocky for Kitty tune "Cast Iron," followed by the one-two punch of "Digging For Something" and "FOH." It was back to No Pocky... for "Punch Me Harder," and then Mac asked the crowd to sing along during "Learned To Surf." "I'm gonna need you to repeat after me, in the age-old tradition of repeating after people on stage, he quipped. Their 11-song set came to a close with "Slack Motherfucker" into "Precision Auto." --ZP
Michigan post-hardcore crew La Dispute were up next at the far-from-everything Rock Stage. The four-piece were heavy on this year's great Rooms of the House, and began their 10-song set with "HUDSONVILLE, MI 1956," "Stay Happy There," and "First Reactions After Falling Through the Ice" from the LP falling within the first five they played. Their meditative grooves quickly won over the large crowd they had gathered at the stage. My next target after La Dispute was the Rise Stage, where whiskey-soaked Memphis crew Lucero would soon begin their late afternoon set. I only stuck around for a few songs, but I got to hear some of my favorites from the start, including "On My Way Downtown" into "Nights Like These." --ZP

After Lucero, it was back over to the Rock Stage for reunited Austin emo band Mineral. The band quietly took the stage and delivered an excellent set that was split evenly between their 1997 debut The Power of Failing and 1998's EndSerenading. Highlights included their heavier moments found within the brief "Five, Eight, & Ten," "For Ivadell," and "Gloria," and also the more subdued offerings like "Love Letter Typewriter." Mineral were one of the best emo bands out there, and it's great to see them return sounding great. --ZP
One of my most anticipated sets of the three-day fest was Patti Smith's 6PM performance on the Riot Stage. Patti was born in Chicago not all that far from the stage she occupied, and spoke about coming to the park with her mother as a very young child. She and her band opened with "Dancing Barefoot" into the Horses tune "Redondo Beach." A cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)" came next, followed by "Pissing in a River." Along with a select few others, Patti Smith fully embodies the spirit of Riot Fest. --ZP
While Zach was over at Patti Smith on the Riot Stage, I was at the Rise Stage for Mudhoney. The grunge grandfathers ripped through their set and barely stopped to catch their breath. Drummer Dan Peters was a beast on drums throughout the set, and at one point the band even made way for a brief drum solo, bringing in the fuzz at the climax. You would think Mark Arm's vocal style would have wrecked his pipes after all these years but the guy sounded just as good as he did on the band's debut album. The definite highlight of set was the band's classic "Touch Me I'm Sick" which left everyone floored. --MM
If Patti Smith carries the ethos of Riot Fest, then Primus serve to represent the festival's large carnival presence. Les Claypool was transfixed on the ferris wheel he faced from the stage and spoke at length about how beautiful it was and how lucky they were to be performing near it. He later prompted guitarist Larry LaLonde to do a solo inspired by the wheel. Unlike when I saw them in 2013, Primus shed their jammy approach of late for the tighter feel of their early material. This shift was aided by stand-in timekeeper Danny Carey, who delivered a fast-handed, rigid performance. The trio opened with the Sailing the Seas of Cheese cut "Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers," followed by the driving LP number "Here Come the Bastards." The tweaky Brown Album song "Over the Falls" was also played, as well as more favorites like "My Name Is Mud," and set endcap "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver." --ZP
Weezer were one of the albums billed to play a classic album (The Blue Album), but first they warmed up with some of their more recent singles, steadily going back in time with each song. The band played "Pork and Beans," "Beverly Hills," "Island In The Sun," "Hash Pipe," "El Scorcho" and others before getting to 1994, the year of The Blue Album. Everything prior to The Blue Album's performance felt like filler as everyone, including myself, sang along to every Blue Album song, most loudly to "Buddy Holly" which some fans begged to be played again. Weezer performed flawlessly while their stage lights bathed everyone in blue light, keeping in theme of the album's color. It was amazing seeing the band perform The Blue Album-- one of my favorite 90s albums-- in its entirety. I only wish they could've squeezed in Pinkerton right after. --MM

One of the coolest festivals in the world, Barcelona's Primavera Sound will hold its 2014 edition from May 29 - 31. Arcade Fire, Pixies and Neutral Milk Hotel were announced as headliners a while back but the fest announced it's headliners today via an online short film. They've outdone themselves this year, as the three day event includes a reunited Slowdive (!), Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The National, Television, Slint, Foals, Warpaint, St. Vincent, Majical Cloudz, Kendrick Lamar, The National, Metronomy, Queens of the Stone Age, Disclosure, CHVRCHES, Darkside, Julia Holter, Cloud Nothings , and more.

Merge Records is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and they are planning a year-long celebration the culmination of which will be the Merge Festival which will happen July 23-26 in the label's hometown of Carrboro, NC. Line-up, tickets and other interesting details like those are still TBA, but you can watch a couple teaser videos below. (This will probably be one festival Outkast won't be at, but you never know!) They last celebrated back in 2009 with XX Merge.

Superchunk / Danny Brown
SPIN put together a pretty killer lineup for their annual 'Year in Music' show this year. Taking place at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on 12/10, the bill included rising pop star Charli XCX (whose set included the hit song that not many people realize she wrote for Icona Pop), indie legends Superchunk (who recently made a new video), and one of 2013's greatest and most fun rap stars Danny Brown (who Charli XCX also joined on stage towards the end of the night). It was a well rounded night that delivered from start to finish, even without the complimentary drinks that were flowing in the balcony. Comedian Hannibal Buress hosted the festivities and told the jokes.
The show was free and packed, but also guestlist only. We gave away ten pairs of tix here at BrooklynVegan.

Screaming Females at Bowery Ballroom in September (more by Amanda Hatfield)
We've been asking around for artists to tell us their favorite albums of 2013, and the people at NJ punk/indie rock label Don Giovanni Records sent over some lists from a few of their artists. At the bottom of this post, you can browse the lists from label co-founder Joe Steinhardt (also an artist on the label as Modern Hut), DC post-punks Priests, eclectic Brooklyn duo Shellshag, Amherst sludge rockers California X, Wisconsin punk rippers Tenement, Hilly Eye, Lauren Measure's new pop punk band Worriers, and Marissa Paternoster, the shredder/vocalist of Screaming Females (and also the brains behind Noun). One major trend on the lists is that the self-titled debut from Radioactivity (the new band of The Marked Men's Jeff Burke and Mark Ryan) appears more than any other album. If you haven't heard that one yet, you can stream it below.
As discussed, most of the bands mentioned will be playing the Don Giovanni showcases happening in Brooklyn on February 6 at 285 Kent and February 7 and 8 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets for 285 Kent and MHOW (including a 2-day pass option) are still available.

The Front Bottoms at Mercury Lounge in 2011 (more by Chris La Putt)
The Front Bottoms' Talon of the Hawk (out now on Bar/None) was one of the more fun records of the year, mixing folk punk and indie pop in a way that was pretty easy to get stuck in your head. We asked them for their top albums of 2013, and drummer Mat Uychich sent a list that pretty much sounds like what you'd imagine they listen to. It also includes both 2013 albums by Kevin Devine (whose band Bad Books the Front Bottoms opened for in July) and the newest from Tiny Moving Parts (who open the Front Bottoms' upcoming show at Shea). The Front Bottoms also have other upcoming dates, including another sold-out NYC show a day earlier at Bowery Ballroom (12/27), and a tour with You Blew It! that hits Long Island on January 30 at 89 North (tickets).

It's the first work week of December and the year-end music lists for 2013 keep piling in. We just saw album lists from Q and Mojo, and now we get a list from a US publication, SPIN. There's not too many surprises on this one. Like last year, it shares its #1 with the highest Pitchfork-rated album of the year, and in general it features many of the albums we expect to see on these kinds of lists, including a lot of the year's big-name comebacks like My Bloody Valentine, Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, Queens of The Stone Age, Boards of Canada and Nine Inch Nails, plus big breakouts like Haim and Disclosure. There are a few interesting omissions though, like Savages.

When Superchunk were in NYC for a couple Bowery Ballroom shows and a Fallon performance earlier this year, they headed to Brooklyn DIY spot Shea Stadium to film the video for I Hate Music track "Void." In addition to the band themselves, the video features comedian/actors Jon Glaser and Jon Benjamin, plus members of multiple local bands including Ava Luna, Heliotropes, Aye Nako, Lost Boy?, Weird Womb, and others. Danny Brown at Rough Trade NYC - 11/26/13 (via Taylor Sprow)
Danny Brown, fresh off two big shows with Sleigh Bells, did something more intimate yesterday (11/26) at the new Rough Trade NYC, where he played a free in-store. Like the in-store sets are, his set was brief, but included a number of Old standouts like "Smokin & Drinkin," "Dope Song," "Handstand," and "Dip," plus some non-album tracks like the especially great "Molly Ringwald" from the Loosies comp. Torres / Pallbearer / Joanna Gruesome
After a hot set by Yuck (who played after Courtney Barnett, Pity Sex and more), things cooled down during King Dude's set, literally, as the venue succesfully tested out their air conditioning for the first time. Nothing were then followed by the heaviest band of the day: doom traditionalists Pallbearer, we announced as our special guest just hours earlier. They played with Saint Vitus at Europa the night before.
Then things eased their way back in a lighter direction, with alt-folk singer Torres -- playing as a duo rather than a four-piece -- who continues to get grungier and more intense each time. We were worried that the transition from the metal of Pallbearer to Torres would be a disaster, but it was just the opposite and both bands played to a full room, even if the faces were not all the same.
Then came one of the most fun sets of the day (if we do say so ourselves) from Hop Along, who had fans packing in towards the front of the venue and singing along for much of their set. Hop Along gave the love right back and didn't hide their excitement that they were getting to open for Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan and Mary Timony's new band Ex Hex. After Ex Hex, the late-night portion of the show (we were only initially going until 10 PM) began with a set from Amsterdam's Jacco Gardner, who like Spires ten hours earlier, sound a lot like late '60s psych/baroque pop. Then came NYC's good lookin' rockers Drowners, followed by another big winner of this year's CMJ, Joanna Gruesome. The UK band only recently formed, banged out a debut LP mixing twee pop and punk called Weird Sister, and seriously honed their live show, which was one not to miss. A lot of folks who had clearly been at Arcade Fire earlier in the night (a lot of tuxes, a lot of animal masks) made it over for JG's set. The band didn't let amp issues or it being their last of a zillion CMJ shows slow them down, and their set ended with three of the five members in the crowd.
Finally, our epic-length party ended on a highly eccentric note, with a post-1AM set from UK duo Public Service Broadcasting who mix krauty dancerock with samples from '70s and '80s educational films. While they were lacking the projections they normally play with, they were still quite entertaining -- they addressed the crowd purely with dialogue samples -- and their tight set featured the only banjo of the night. After it all, somewhow we we were still standing.
Thanks again to Sailor Jerry and to Raw Revolution for supplying the free organic live food bars that scattered around the venue. Thanks to Vinny's Music, who provided backline equipment for the artists, to Baby's All Right for being so accomodating and for getting the doors open on time, to all the bands who played and to everyone that stopped by.
