Cover bands aren't normally the kind of thing you'd go to Music Hall of Williamsburg or Bowery Ballroom to see, but when it's 2/3 (or half depending on how many members you think they have) of Supergrass maybe that changes things. When Supergrass bassist Mikey Quinn injured his spine last year, singer/guitarist Gaz Coombes and drummer Danny Gafferty formed side project The Hot Rats with producer Nigel Godrich and set out to make a covers album in the vein of Bowie's Pin Ups. The result is Turn Ons which is out January 26 on Fat Possum, and includes songs by The Beastie Boys ("Fight For Your Right"), The Doors ("Crystal Ship"), The Cure ("The Love Cats"), Roxy Music ("Love is the Drug"), Bowie ("Queen Bitch") and more.
The Hot Rats (Gaz and Danny. Nigel only plays on the album) play Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (1/12) and Bowery Ballroom Thursday (1/14), with UK power soul act The Heavy opening both shows. (The Heavy also play 92Y Tribeca on Saturday.) The Hot Rats also perform on The Late Show with David Letterman on Wednesday and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Friday (1/15). The Heavy perform on Letterman on Monday (1/18). All Hot Rats and The Heavy tour dates, and some videos are below...
Supergrass are playing Webster Hall in July. Tickets are on sale. They're also opening for the Foo Fighters in NJ one day earlier, and have a new album coming out. All Foo/Supergrass dates and more info below....
