"Billy Idol is going to be on this stage," Mikaiah [of The Bots] told the crowd during their set. Adding, "Maybe he'll say hi to me backstage." And while it never actually played out that way, the brothers did see a whole lot of Tove Lo at her set a few hours later. "Her boobs were the highlight of the day for me," Mikaiah told Billboard. "She flashed the crowd three or four songs in!" [Billboard]The Sweetlife Festival went down at Columbia, MD's Merriweather Post Pavillion this past weekend (May 30-31). Day 1 was headlined by Kendrick Lamar, who recently collaborated with festival founders Sweetgreen for the "Beets Don't Kale My Vibe" salad. Kendrick brought up Sweetgreen CEO Jonathan Neman for "m.A.A.d city" after asking a fan to come on stage and rap with him, but said the only qualification is you have to know every word to "m.A.A.d city." Jonathan... did not know the words and Kendrick very quickly kicked him off the stage. Instead he brought up another fan named Ayanna who did in fact know every word and was quite the enthusiastic performer too. Video of that is below.
Kendrick also brought out SZA during his set (video of them playing "Poetic Justice" below), and she also played her own set that day too. Her wardrobe at the fest was pretty revealing, but she kept it PG 13-rated, unlike pop singer Tove Lo, who seems to be making it a tradition of flashing her fans during concerts. Video of her doing so at Sweetlife (which you shouldn't watch at work) is below. As you can see above, The Bots were stoked.
Also on day 1 was Sinkane, and pictures of him, SZA and Kendrick are in this post. The Pixies played that day too. We missed them, but we did just catch them in NYC and NJ. Billy Idol and Lucius played that day too, and pictures of their sets are here.

Billy Idol @ Sweetlife 2015
Billy Idol and his guitarist Steve Stevens are rock gods! On May 29, 2015, they played an outdoor concert on Pier 97 in New York and it rocked so hard! I've seen Billy Idol perform a few times over the years (including earlier in 2015 at the Beacon Theatre - but there is no review because I was on a blog hiatus) and Billy Idol never disappoints.Billy Idol, not to be confused with Billy Joel (or Gene Ween), brought his tour to NYC on Friday (5/29) for a big outdoor show at JBL Life at Pier 97 with openers Cayetana, before heading to Maryland for the Sweetlife Festival. The review above is from the NYC show, which we missed, but we did catch Billy at Sweetlife. Pictures of his set, as well as Lucius' set from that festival, are in this post. Pictures of Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Sinkane and more from Sweetlife day 1 are posted here.
...Because Billy Idol's songs were played to death on the radio in the 80s, you sort of forget how great they sound when you have a concert full of people singing along to his songs and how many times, the songs lend themselves perfectly to crowd participation. For example, hearing the whole of Pier 97 shout out "FLESH! FLESH FOR FANTASY!" at every chorus during that song along with Billy gives me chills thinking about it. Or during "Rebel Yell," when the crowd shouts out "More! More! More! Woooooooowwwwww!" or during "White Wedding" when the audience sings "It's a nice day to.... STAAAAAART AGAAAAINNNNN!" is also chill inducing. During "Dancing With Myself," at every chorus, Billy Idol said "If I had a chance, I'd ask NEW YORK to dance," and if people hadn't completely lost their minds by that point in the show, that sure did it. [According 2 G]
Billy Idol and Cayetana meet again at Riot Fest Chicago.

First, Phoenix announced that their long awaited followup to 2009's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix would be out this April, then they revealed that it's called Bankrupt! and made their first North American show announcement of 2013: New Orleans Jazz Festival. They've since been revealed as a Coachella headliner and now they've got even more North American dates scheduled, including one that's not too far from NYC: Columbia, MD's Sweetlife Festival, which goes down at Merriweather Post Pavillion on May 11 (about a 3 and a half hour drive from NYC). Their schedule currently has a week or so free on either side of of the Sweetlife fest...hmm.
And the rest of Sweetlife lineup ain't too shabby either. Joining Phoenix will be Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Solange, Youth Lagoon, Holy Ghost!, Gary Clark Jr, MS MR, and more. Tickets for the festival go on sale Friday (2/8) at 10 AM with a presale beginning on Wednesday (2/6).

Twin Shadow just released the first taste of his second album, Confess, which will be out July 10 on 4AD. (That's the album's cover art above.) Last week, Twin Shadow debuted new material at Glasslands and played the Sweetlife Festival in Maryland. How were the shows? A short clip of the brand rocking out at the MD show is below.

The mysterious club that housed The Shins last night (3/8) was not too much of a mystery in the end; it was Le Poisson Rouge, a venue that has been known to stream shows for NPR on many occasions. Here are some pictures and the setlist.
Did you catch the show or the stream on iPad via NPR? What did you think? So far the LPR show and an aappearance on Saturday Night Live are The Shins' only NYC outings that we know aobut. One of those towns that The Shins will hit is outside of DC at Merriweather Post Pavililion, where the band joins on as part of the Sweetlife Festival on April 28th. The Shins with play alongside names like Kid Cudi, Explosions In The Sky, Fitz & The Tantrums, A$AP Rocky, and fun. with more still TBA.
