Nick Zinner at MoMA last year (more by Chris La Putt)
Nick Zinner

Not to be confused with events co-organized by the Boredoms, last year 40 drummers got together at the Hudson Hotel's Good Units, and this year the same group is organizing a string party...

We're doing it again and we're doing it big! Last year, 40 Drummers was more epic than we had ever imagined. With original music composed by Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Hisham Akira Bharoocha & Ben Vida (Soft Circle) from 40 Drummers, performed by 41+ uber-talented musicians, this year's is no doubt going to be just as awesome as the last. We're talking 41 STRINGS - that's violins, violas, cellos, electric & acoustic guitars, upright bass, electric bass, on top of synth and drums.

Super rad lighting works by Yoshi Sodeoka, mixed by E*Rock and produced by Dawn of Man, and also by Ernesto Klar will be candy for your eyes. Kanon Organic Vodka and wine from The Naked Grape will take care of the rest.

No word on the personnel at 41 Strings, but we do know that David Pajo will be one of the axe-slingers. The show goes down at 8PM on Wednesday, May 11th (again) at Good Units. RSVP at RSVP@Loomstate.org (yes, this happens in the Hudson Hotel and is somehow related to the Loomstate clothing company). Flyer below.

In related news, Nick Zinner laid down fretwork for the new Santigold track "Go" which features guest vocals from Karen O and which was produced by Q-Tip AND Switch and which debuted on Jay-Z's blog recently. Listen to the song below.

Speaking of Q-Tip, don't forget that he is scheduled to headline Brooklyn Hip Hop Fest on July 18th. Tickets are on sale.

And in other Nick Zinner news, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist is currently showcasing his photographic work at Anastasia Photo through June 4th.

That song stream and the flyer is below.

Tickets are currently on AMEX presale and go on regular sale at noon tomorrow (1/28). The show marks four appearances in a row at Terminal 5 for Miike Snow, though the last was a DJ set.

Major Lazer @ Pitchfork Fest Sunday
this1

"The tempo picked up again with Major Lazer at 6:15 p.m., and--hallelujah!--it stayed at a pretty high level through the end of Pitchfork 2010...

...Though Young is missing from the [Pavement] reunion, Stephen Malkmus and his bandmates were musically concise, tight, and focused, and they delivered many of their best songs--"Range Life," "Frontwards," "Greenlander," and "Unfair" among them--in versions that were every bit as strong as they were back in the day, and better in some cases than that last stage of the group. Since the music always seemed timeless, there was less of a taint of nostalgia here then with, say, the Pixies reunion, though to be sure, the motivations probably were very much the same, and mostly colored green... [Jim DeRegatis]

The 2010 Pitchfork Festival has come to an end, and if you've been following along, you saw pictures from Day 1 & 2, pictures of LCD Soundsystem, and more pictures from Day 1 & 2. Now a set of pictures from the third and final day, with a bunch of setlists from all three days (including Pavement's), below...

"Wow. The Sahara is past capacity at Coachella for Die Antwoord. No midget. Waiting for the trainwreck but people dig it." - The Scenestar

"Seeing a shirtless Danny DeVito run across the stage while Faith No More played pretty much made my #coachella weekend." - stovn

Die Antwoord, Faith No More
Coachella 2010 - Day 2
Coachella 2010 - Day 2

Flopping phalluses are in this year according to Major Lazer and Die Antwoord. Each presented the intersection of beats, party-hyping, gross humor, and dancing in your underwear. Day 2 of the Coachella Music & Arts Festival had an overall far-out theme. Some with sexually explicit lunacy, others with psychedelic music. South Africa's Die Antwoord introduced zef-rap to the festival, South Africa's version of white trash hip hop-a bold, fearless expression of crazy stick a finger up your bum entertainment.

Before arriving at these culminating moments, the day progressed through a series of psychedelic and/or raunchy expressions. John Waters kicked things off with thoughts on crawling through pig poo, taking poppers, the pleasures of sploshing, and strange things he wants to do before he dies. Gossip's Beth Ditto hoped he was watching her blazing disco soul performance but was afraid to look backstage and see him smiling and waving at her. Gossip put on a set that inspired revelations on reality in the most self-empowering ways.

John Waters & Beth Ditto @ Coachella (this pics via Jermey Scott)
Beth Ditto and John Waters

The day's best covers include Faith No More doing "Reunited" (they also covered Michael Jackson's "Ben"), Portugal, The Man's jamming Bowie's "Moonlight Daydream," and Girls' flawless "All I Have To Do Is Dream" by the Everly Brothers. The last was a most appropriate choice for the band with an Ariel Pink sensibility towards '50s ballads. MGMT brought the futuristic 1960s with songs from its new album. Many pointed out that the band didn't play "Kids", but that seems to miss the point that MGMT put on a pretty sophisticated, experimental live performance of the band's signature Indian headdress on Phil Spector Fraggle Rock sound.

The Raveonettes played as a duo and sans drum machine, adorably sharing a mic sometimes. The rest of the band remains trapped under lava in Iceland, figuratively speaking. Camera Obscura also shouted out bands stuck in the UK, dedicating "Let's Get Out Of This Country" to those who could not make it.

It seems almost every DJ this weekend has sampled Major Lazer's "Pon De Floor" except Flying Lotus, who took the stage all on his own (no Thom Yorke cameo included). After warming up the crowd with some first grade experimental hip hop, FlyLo brought out the big guns, sounds combined in layers and pitches that act like quaaludes on the light speed continuum. The Dirty Projectors girls evoked cool electronic birds and the Dezurik Sisters with their harmonizing powers. Beach House cooed the audience romantically as 50% of the band, Alex Scally, rubbed his slide up and down the frets.

Did that sound sexy? It's time to talk about sexy. The xx provided the mellow arousal Blonde Redhead and Portishead have given Coachella the last two years. People like The xx because they want sex that fits this soundtrack. They also want sex as excitingly goofy gross as Die Antwoord and to fall in love with a gal like Sia, all at the same time. Sia's beautiful voice closed the night in the Gobi tent, and though her accent rendered her side comments completely incomprehensible, everyone laughed and agreed with anything she said. On the other hand, as great and sexy as the Dead Weather sounded, I don't know if I want to bed someone who demands I treat her like my mother. Old Crow Medicine Show suggested letting a woman rule your mind leads to troubles during "Minglewood Blues." Instead, let her win your heart with country-fried dinner.

Faith No More's twelve-song set included a cameo by a semi-streaker who happened to be Coachella regular Danny Devito. You can see that happen in one of the videos below. Faith No More's whole setlist is down there too.

Porcupine Tree, Tokyo Police Club, Hot Chip, The Almighty Defenders, Les Claypool, Devo, and Muse were also on the bill Saturday. Our review, pictures and videos from Friday are HERE. Saturday continues below...

HARD NYC
HARD NYC

HARD PACKED Terminal 5 full of sweaty bodies on Saturday night (4/3). Pacifiers, bright colors and eyes rolling back into people's heads were in abundance. Skimpily outfitted dancers often decorated the stage at what was otherwise mostly a DJ show. Destructo opened the night (but Zach missed them). Then came Russia's Proxy followed by Portugal's always-fun and lively (and mc-led) Buraka Som Sistema. Headliners of the night were Boys Noize who actually kept visuals to a minimum, and Major Lazer (aka Diplo and Switch) who, like at SXSW, kept things over the top. In Austin they had one kind of monster. In NYC there was a dragon.

HARD's next NYC party takes place in an even larger venue this summer...

Global trendsetter & cultural icon M.I.A. will make her 2010 national stage debut at HARD NYC on Saturday, July 24th at the South Island Field on Governors Island. In conjunction with M.I.A.'s NEET Recordings label, confirmed performers for this two-stage festival include Sleigh Bells, Theophilus London, Skream, Benga, Ninjasonik, 12th Planet, Nguzunguzu, Borgore, Destructo & much much more TBA.
Tickets are still on sale. More pictures from Terminal 5 below...

Major Lazer

DJ duo Major Lazer will be down in SXSW for a set at Cedar Street Courtyard on Saturday, March 20th. They'll also be doing the just-announced Iheartcomix/Jelly/Mad Decent three-day day party at Austin's Mexican American Cultural Center.

After that, their shows include Camp Bisco and dates with Sleigh Bells and a number of summer fests around the world. They play NYC's Terminal 5 on April 3rd for HARD NYC, along with Boys Noize, Buraka Som Sistema (MC/DJ Set), Proxy, Destructo and others. Tickets are still on sale.

Sleigh Bells, who are also at SXSW, go on to tour with Yeasayer, who they play Webster Hall with on May 4th. They also have recently added a show at Market Hotel on May 11th. Sleigh Bells' Austin schedule (which includes the above-mentioned day party) is below.

Major Lazer's two halves - DJs Diplo and Switch - have sets of their own at SXSW. Diplo will be at the above-mentioned Mad Decent party, and will be putting on a gear demonstration at SXSW's Gear Alley Performance Stage at 2pm on Friday, March 19th (where he'll be showing off some Ableton, Korg and Audio-Technica gear). The stage is part of SXSW's new Gear Alley Expo in the Convention Center, which is open to all official showcasing bands and registrants. "Musicians can test out new gear there and it's next to our SXSW Showcasing Artist Lounge (where bands can get free chair massages, drinks, snacks, use a computer, or relax)."

Switch has a set at NYC's Webster Hall coming up on June 11th. Info TBA.

All tour dates and video of Major Lazer DJing at SXSW 2009's Fader Fort are below...

Hard Fest

"Hard Fest" will bring a special summer electro-lineup to L.A. on August 8th. Tickets for that night, which features Underworld, Chromeo, Crystal Castles, Crookers and many others, are on sale now.

Some of that lineup (but not much of it) will be coming for Hard Fest NYC when the party visits Terminal 5 on Saturday, October 10th. The bill for that includes Crookers, Major Lazer (Soundsystem), Rusko, Jack Beats and Destructo. Tickets are on sale.

Other dance-themed festivals (if you can call this a festival) happening in NYC this summer include the Brooklyn Electronic Music Fest, and Electric Zoo on Randall's Island.

Major Lazer (Diplo + Switch) were just in NYC in June for a show at SOB's, which was accompanied by an in-store (to promote their debut) and a video shoot at Studio B.

A video clip from their SOB's gig, with a Hard Fest NYC flyer and the full L.A. lineup, below...

Major Lazer (Diplo) @ Other Music - June 15, 2009 (knnth_stvns)
Diplo

The DJ/producer duo Major Lazer (aka Diplo and Switch) are currently touring in support of their new album. On Saturday they played SOB's in NYC, and on Monday there was an Other Music in-store. Today (6/19) they make two appearances in Philly. This Saturday (6/20) they are scheduled to be in Baltimore AND DC. For that reason, I am guessing that won't actually be at the video shoot that is happening Saturday afternoon at Studio B in Brooklyn, but you can be...

Major Lazer

"On Saturday, June 13th Major Lazer (featuring Diplo and Switch) starts its international Tour of Duty at SOBs.

Major Lazer features legendary DJs Diplo and Switch, both renowned for their ability to get crowds dancing in high-energy and original shows. Diplo, known for his forward-thinking productions for artists such as MIA and Bonde Do Role, incorporates such disparate influences as Miami Bass and Baile Funk into his high-tech, eclectic sound. Switch is loved by critics and dancers alike, and is a leader among DJs. He recently contributed to Santigolds self-titled album to rave reviews. Together they've produced the first LP from Major Lazer, Guns Dont Kill People Lazers Do, set to drop June 16th.

Major Lazer draws from the rich dancehall tradition of Jamaica, and the futuristic dance-floor-killing aesthetic of Diplo and Switch. The sound is the result of global pop culture run through the filter of Major Lazers particular brand of 80s-inspired digital dancehall; it is at once an homage to a bygone era and a look to the future of dance music.

The story of Major Lazer is an interesting one. He has been described as a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984. He fights vampires and various monsters, parties hard, and has a rocket powered skateboard. He has enlisted the help of long-time allies and uber-producers, Diplo and Switch, to produce his first LP.

Combining the worlds best dance music to create a mix of sounds like you've never heard before, Major Lazer will surely start the tour off right on Saturday, June 13th. The set at SOBs will represent the best of many different musical influences that all share one important feature: the ability to get the dance party started."

That's how SOB's describes the show. I think it covers all the major points. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale. MP3 above. All dates and videos (including live from SXSW) below...

XLR8R Issue 123 - Best of 2008
Drop the Lime

This past weekend, which I was really looking forward to, wound up being pretty lame dance-wise. Things started off okay at Webster Hall Friday night. D.I.M. began his set with some oldies but goodies from last year: Boys Noize - "Lava Lava", and the Chemical Brothers - "Salmon Dance" (Crookers Wow remix), then immediately launched into a three song burst of new stuff - MGMT - "Kids" (Soulwax remix), Tiga - "Mind Dimension", and Mr. Oizo - "Positif", which was entirely too short-lived as D.I.M.'s set quickly devolved into what could have unfortunately been a playlist titled "Best Electro of '07". Mostly good songs, just a year old. This can be fine, but nothing D.I.M. was doing was really grabbing my attention.

I started hoping Switch's set would blow me away and save the evening. Unfortunately that was not the case. Switch, apparently nowhere to be found, did not go on, and AC Slater who was scheduled to close out the night, filled in his place. At that point I was frustrated, cold (Webster wasn't too full at that point and was drafty), and having my ear talked off by some drunk a-hole about how great Switch was (after I informed him that it was D.I.M., NOT SWITCH), so I left.

Saturday I was so looking forward to seeing Green Velvet at Sullivan Room (after missing him the past 2 times he was here), but I got a cold and decided to stay in. Apparently he had the packed floor moving all night...

video of that and many upcoming events below....

M83 @ Webster Hall - Nov. 14, 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
M83

Last Friday I had a frustrating, puzzling experience at the M83 show at Webster Hall. M83 is easily one of my favorite bands and I'd enjoyed many of their shows prior to last week's including the one they played just a few months ago at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Despite playing a similar set Friday night, I just wasn't having my typically awesome M83 experience. For some reason, I had no patience for their more mellow and slow songs and when they finally would play something more upbeat or poppy (like Don't Save Us From the Flames or Graveyard Girl) it didn't pack as much of a punch as I wanted. The encore of Couleurs was amazing, but overall something just seemed to be missing. That said, one of my friends loved it, the another (who had never seen M83 before and was only slightly familiar with their music) shared thoughts similar to mine. I also watched some videos of the show THE following morning and got goosebumps, so who knows...Check out one of M83 performing Teen Angst below (more here):

A friend of mine played me some stuff and said "you're the father of dubstep."

Tricky

Tricky (who kicks off a US tour at Irving Plaza in NYC Thurday night) is never at a loss for words or a strong opinion. His career has been defined as much by his viewpoints on artists and music past and present as it has his ever shifting sound pallette. He has been called "the king of trip-hop," a moniker that he never liked and never quite fit. Though his debut Maxinquaye helped forge and popularize, along with Portishead and Massive Attack, the "Bristol" sound, every album since has steadily moved away from simple categorization.

"It's coincidence. To be honest with you, Portishead and Massive Attack, I don't know anything about their music; last time I heard Massive Attack's music was when I was in it, and I've never listened to Portishead. Even if I hadn't been in Massive Attack, that's not something I would listen to, it's not my thing. I don't know much about these bands." [said Tricky recently to The Skinny]
The forty year old, who was worked with everyone, from Bjork and The Gravediggaz, to Tool and Live, is back with his first album in five years, Knowle West Boy, and many are calling it a return. When we spoke, he was in a relaxed mood. He speaks with a hyper active patter that is engaging and contagious.

TrickyWe began our conversation by discussing his absence away from music. Despite being quite consistent with his releases (putting out eight albums in eight years), this is his first record since 2003's Back To Mine. When asked about the long break, he suggested that he started to break away mentally before 2003. "September 11th took me off my stride," he said. "I was in the cycle of tour, record, tour, record. I was in L.A doing some work. I was to leave on a European tour on the 11th and everything happened. I didn't want to travel for a long time. I moved to L.A. And that took a year of my life. I was also looking for another label, and that took another year of my life as well. So really, the 11th of September just changed everything for me."

He has since moved back to England, a decision that has certainly influenced the new record. But when asked why at this stage in his career he would make a concept album about his youth (as was written here, and here), he replied "That's not really true. It's not just about my youth. There are a couple of songs [including the first single, 'Council Estate'] that are about my childhood but there are other songs on there. I think people are thinking that because of those songs as well as the title. Knowle West is a place where nothing good is supposed to come out of. I named the album Knowle West Boy to say, "look at me. I'm still here." He also scoffed at the notion that the record, which has received some of his best reviews since Angels With Dirty Faces, was a return to form. "That's basically because it's more accessible then say Pre-Millenium Tension. I could have put this kind of record out then but chose not to."

This got us talking about the Tricky "sound" and if, in fact, there was one....

DJ Van Scott @ The Musuem of Natural History - May 30, 2008
DJ Van Scott

Last weekend (Friday in particular) was all about making decisions, which is one of my least favorite things to do, especially when choosing among bands/deejays playing at the same time. Friday I think I might have made the wrong decision. I went to One Step Beyond (which featured Switch and Van Scott) at the Museum of Natural History. I arrived around 10:30 or so and witnessed a great deejay set from Van Scott. It touched on a variety of styles, all highly danceable. The tracks were current, but not overplayed, and Van dropped some lesser known remixes of familiar tracks making for a very fun lead up to Switch.

Switch @ The Musuem of Natural History - May 30, 2008 (CRED)
Switch

I'd been looking forward to seeing Switch for months, but I found his set Friday night to be just ok. I wasn't hooked from the beginning and nothing he did brought me in until the last half hour. That's when he started teasing the crowd with "This is Sick", periodically sampling bits and pieces of it, not dropping the track until the very end of the night. When he finally did, it was loud and awesome and made me feel slightly less bad about my decision which made me miss tons of other things happening that night.

Goon & Koyote @ Love, NYC - May 30, 2008 (CRED)
Goon and koyote

When it was over, I found out that Escort still hadn't gone on at the Masonic Temple. I tried to make a mad dash to Brooklyn from the Upper Westside but the D train was not having it. I gave up at 2nd Ave, and instead caught the tail end of what I'm sure had been a great night of dance from Goon & Koyote at Love.

Luckily things already seem to be looking up this week. This Friday there are way fewer decisions to be made.....

Tommie Sunshine @ Hiro Ballroom - May 22, 2008 (CRED)
Tommie Sunshine

This past weekend was not one of the best I've experienced, but there were some good moments: Thursday night at Hiro, Tommie Sunshine dropped an hour and a half of very interesting, highly danceable, wobbly/fidgety house. Sunday night I got down to a decent, fun set by VDRK at Damn! at the Knitting Factory. He played Fred Falke's Love Theme which was absolutely amazing to hear out.

The less exciting parts of the weekend were Junkie XL's set at Hiro, which started off fine, but got a bit repetitive. Then it went from really hard stuff to a very mellow track which you probably would've appreciated a lot if you were on drugs, otherwise it just seemed a bit cheesy.

People getting down @ Damn! @ the Knitting Factory - May 25, 2008 (CRED)
Damn

The second disappointing part of the weekend was Apparat's set at the Knitting Factory. The show sold out. The Knitting Factory was as packed as I had ever seen it and people were actually dancing. But I just could not get into it. I went into this show loving what I had heard of Apparat thus far, but I found their live show to be very underwhelming. They had a few moments where they were rocking, but other than that it was just kind of eh. The parts that were more guitar-driven and rocking reminded me of the past few times I saw m83 (who are currently on tour and will be in town next week) a few years ago and once that happened they were all I could think about. I realize that m83 and Apparat are two different bands, trying to accomplish different things, each with their own sound, but they were similar enough that I felt as though I was watching a far inferior version of an m83 show.

From the looks of it, this week in dance should be much better. Fortunately/unfortunately most of it is happening on the same night:
Friday (aka TONIGHT - MAY 30).......
