Scarface

Scarface of the legendary Geto Boys (who are still active) returns to NYC for a show with Stalley on June 18 at BB King's. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Brooklyn hip hop vets Black Moon have been back in action lately (they played the Duck Down CMJ 2013 showcase), and they'll be joining fellow Brooklyn hip hop vets Smif-n-Wessun (who also played that showcase) for another show on April 16 at BB King's. Tickets for that show are on sale. Smif-N-Wessun are also on the upcoming Mobb Deep show.

The similarly named Black Milk is a bit newer than Black Moon, but stays true to that old school sound, and he'll be joining fellow throwback rappers Roc Marciano and Final Outlaw on April 17 at The Studio at Webster Hall. Tickets are available.

The Studio at Webster Hall hosts another hip hop show on April 24 with Das Racist's Kool A.D. along with Rebelmatic, Prop Anon, Sarcasmo, Sunny Gang and host Ricky Powell. Tickets are on sale.

Chicago rapper Fredo Santana, who made his NYC debut at Santos this past December, returns for a much larger show on May 14 at Highline Ballroom. Tickets to that show are on sale now.

Juelz Santana (who has collaborated with Fredo, but doesn't appear to be related though Fredo is related to Chief Keef) plays a NYC show on May 18 at Stage 48 with Trial and Era & A.L.I., Status and Don Dada. You can get tickets to that one.

Pharoahe MOnch

Pharoahe Monch is releasing a new album, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), on April 15 via W.A.R. Media/Duck Down, and he will celebrate with a release show the day it comes out at SOB's (4/15). Tickets for that show are on sale now. Stream "Bad MF" from the new album, below.

Smoke DZA just released a new album this week, titled Dream.Zone.Achieve (stream it on Rdio), and he also celebrates that with a release show at SOB's on May 7. Tickets are on sale. Listen to "Fhvt BVsturd" featuring Joey Bada$$ from the new album, below.

SOB's also hosts Bronx hip hop veteran KRS-One on April 20. Tickets for that one are on sale too.

Also at Highline Ballroom is '90s era Queens trio Salt N Pepa on June 6 (tickets).

Two upcoming shows that aren't exactly in NYC but nearby: Big Sean teams up with his R&B collaborator Jhene Aiko for a Long Island show on April 25 at Tilles Center Concert Hall in Greenvale (tickets), and Tech N9ne & Krizz Kaliko team up with Freddie Gibbs (who just released an album and toured with Madlib) for a NJ show on April 26 at Starland Ballroom (tickets).

Miguel and 2 Chainz also just announced a show, and multiple hip hop shows at new Brooklyn venue The Wick were announced.

Other previously announced upcoming hip hop shows in NYC include Jeremiah Jae TONIGHT (4/2), Grieves, Jurassic 5, Eminem & Rihanna, YG & DJ Mustard, Joey Bada$$, The Underachievers, Danny Brown, A-Trak & Cam'ron and more.

Schoolboy Q at Best Buy Theater - 5/21/13 (via Kellen Dengler)
Schoolboy Q

Thanks to TDE's recent success, Q found himself as the most established performer at the Freshman show. With no one to accompany him on stage, he fared better in the larger crowd as a solo artist, breezing through tracks from Habits & Contradictions and throwback collaborations with A$AP Rocky. At one point, he asked Kendrick Lamar to join him but laughed at the audience members who fell for his joke. Fittingly, he won the crowd back with his charisma by asking them the title of his upcoming album. "Oxymoron!" they screamed back. And this was done four times over. [XXL]
The 2013 XXL Freshman Class, including Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Angel Haze, and more, all came to NYC for a show at Best Buy Theater last night (5/21). You can check out a video of Schoolboy Q playing "My Hatin' Joint" at the show, below.

As mentioned in yesterday's What's Going On? post, Action Bronson made a video for his Harry Fraud-produced song, "Strictly 4 My Jeeps." If you missed it, you can watch that video below. Riff Raff stars in the video, and as discussed, he plays a Scion A/V show in Brooklyn at Coco 66 tonight (5/22) with Stalley and Smoke DZA. Entrance to that show had to be gained through Scion's contest which has since ended.

Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul are both members of the group Black Hippy (which also includes Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock), and that whole group is playing the traveling Rock the Bells Festival which hits the NYC-area on October 4-5 at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, NJ. Tickets for that festival are on sale now. The rest of the lineup includes Big K.R.I.T., Common, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Jhene Aiko, Juicy J, Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan, and many more.

Updated Rock the Bells lineup and videos below...

Rock the Bells 2013

Happy 10th anniversary to Rock the Bells, who have announced their initial, rotating 2013 lineup featuring hosts Peter Rosenberg & MURS 3:16, as well as names like Bone Thugs N Harmony, Danny Brown, Black Hippy (who just played NYC), Common, E40 & Too Short, Earl Sweatshirt (ditto), Flatbush Zombies, Juicy J (who played a Fader show on Monday and Irving Plaza last night), Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan (who play Summer Jam soon), Tyler the Creator (who just announced an NYC show as part of Odd Future), Eazy E, Ol Dirty Bastard and more. Confused? Yes, I did just say Eazy E and Ol Dirty Bastard, both of which will be "virtual performances" as part of the travelling festival. AllHipHop reports:

Ol Dirty Bastard and Eazy-E's spirits will return to the stage at Rock The Bells this year, AllHipHop has learned.

The pair of Hip-Hop legends will have holograms performing this year at the 10-year anniversary of the rap festival.

Eazy-E will perform virtually with Bone Thugs-In-Harmony and ODB will rock with Wu Tang. Organizers said Eazy never blessed the Rock The Bells stage and ODB only did once.

Also, the "holograms" are approved by Eazy-E's wife Tomica Wright and Ol Dirty's mother, Cherry Jones.

Tupac's Coachella appearance inspired the new virtual performances at Rock The Bells, organizers admitted.

So far only four dates exist for Rock the Bells. They're all listed below. Two of them are on the East Coast and one is in the NYC area at Meadowlands Racetrack in Rutherford, NJ on October 4-5. Tickets go on presale Thursday (10/16) at noon, and regular sale on Saturday.

Initial lineup (at least 15 more artists TBA), dates and some video below.

Ghostface Killah's other upcoming shows include the free Prospect Park show on 6/23, a Wu-Block party at Highline Ballroom (8/8) (tickets on sale 6/15), and Rock the Bells with Wu-Block. The Highline show is only with Ghostface and Sheek Louch, but for Rock the Bells, the whole crew will be there (Ghostface, Raekwon, Sheek Louch, Jadakiss, and Styles P).

Meanwhile, Raekwon will be in NYC for the previously discussed Best Buy Theater show (7/26) with Tyler, the Creator, and Earl Sweatshirt. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/15) at noon.

While NXNE is going on in Toronto, Brooklyn will be getting its own multi-venue music festival with Northside Festival, which also happens this weekend.

As mentioned, Kool Keith plays a Northside show at Brooklyn Bowl TONIGHT (6/14) with Lushlife. Lushlife recently dropped a remix of "She's a Buddhist, I'm a Cubist" with Angel Deradoorian, Cities Aviv, G-Side, Big Baby Gandhi, Deniro Farrar, and KDz Kenny Dennis. GZA & Grupo Fantasma @ Bonnaroo 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
GZA

And speaking of hip hop Northside shows at MHOW, GZA (backed by Grupo Fantasmo like he was a Bonnaroo) plays two (early and late) shows at the venue TONIGHT (6/14). Both are sold out, but you can try and get in with your Northside badge.

Aside from Kid Sister at Sugarland on Saturday (6/16), not much more hip hop is happening at Northside, but there are other good hip hop shows tonight and this weekend.

Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) plays the previously discussed show at the Apollo Theater TONIGHT (6/14) as part of Blue Note Jazz Festival. Tickets for that show are still available FOR THE SHOW THAT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 28th.

Blue Note Jazz Fest also gives us a free Central Park Summerstage show on Sunday (6/17) with Groove Theory, Soulive, Riq and Rah with Strings (Black Thought + Rahzel), and DJ Questlove.

EPMD and DJ Scratch play a free show at Herbert Von King Park TONIGHT (6/14). They also team up for a NYC show at BB King's on July 18 with Marley Mari and Big Daddy Kane. (tickets)

Hip hop producer RJD2 DJs a party for the ongoing 'One Step Beyond' series at the American Museum of Natural History on Friday (6/15) with Cosmo Baker, Import/Export, and visuals by Glowing Pictures with special guest Shantell Martin. Tickets for that are available.

You can also catch Tech N9ne and Machine Gun Kelly on the Hostile Takeover Tour which takes over the NYC area on Saturday (6/16) at Starland Ballroom in NJ (tickets) and Sunday (6/17) at HIghline Ballroom (tickets). Be careful during Machine Gun Kelly's set though; TMZ reports that he was just sued $15,000 for slicing open a bouncer's finger. Ouch.

Apple Stores are hosting hip hop in-stores all month.

Once all the Northside craziness ends, you can catch Ab-Soul at his previously discussed NYC show on Thursday, June 21 at SOB's. Tickets for that show are still available.

In other hip hop news, you can stream Black Milk's Live at Third Man Records in its entirety and J-Dilla's posthumous Rebirth of Detroit in its entirety below, along with other song streams and contest details for tonight's Kool Keith show.
