We just mentioned how a lot of music websites (like NPR) use this year midpoint to post their favorite albums of the year so far. Pitchfork isn't one of them, but they do post their Overlooked Records of the year. They write, "None of these releases received a Best New Music designation and not all were rated above an 8.0 but all are records worth revisiting." They've got a couple metal albums (Bell Witch, Sannhet), that ambient Jeff Bridges album, and the no-longer-overlooked indie rockers Hop Along (who also made best-of-2015-so-far lists from Rolling Stone, AV Club, Stereogum, Paste, Flavorwire, Noisey, and NPR's song list).
The list is also interestingly heavy on relatively underground electronic records, including Lakker, Mbongwana Star, Mumdance & Logos, Anthony Naples, Pearson Sound and Smurphy. Check out the whole list below, and read their commentary here.
In terms of rap, it has Joey Bada$$ (who plays NYC this week), and Chicago duo Sicko Mobb. Sicko Mobb will make their way over to NYC on July 25 for Warm Up with Baauer, Skepta and more (tickets); and a late show at Palisades that night with Taso, Ricky Eat Acid and Tripletrain (tickets).
Sicko Mobb made the list for their Super Saiyan Vol 2 mixtape, which you can download for free at DatPiff and stream below...

Shabazz Palaces collaborators and Sub Pop labelmates THEESatisfaction have announced their new album, EarthEE, which will be out on February 24. Like its predecessor, awE naturalE, it features Shabazz on multiple tracks, including lead single "Recognition" which also features Seattle postpunk dude/producer Erik Blood. THEESatisfaction fuck with the R&B formula about as much as Shabazz does with rap, and "Recognition" takes their warped sounds into even further-out territory than before. Hold on to your desk chair and stream that song below.
THEESatisfaction will celebrate the new album with a release party in NYC on March 6 at Santos Party House. Tickets for that show are on sale now. No full tour is announced yet, but they have a few other dates around the Santos show, which are listed below.
Bad Brains at DeLuna Fest 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
As discussed, the free 2014 AfroPunk Festival is going down in Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park from August 23-24 with D'Angelo, Body Count, Trash Talk, Shabazz Palaces, Fishbone, and more. Since we last spoke, more artists have been added to the lineup including Bad Brains (with special guest handling vocal duties), Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Cro-Mags, King Britt, The Bots, a tribute to DJ Rashad (featuring Teklife's DJ Deeon, RP Boo, J-Cush, The Era dancers and more guests) and more. Like we said, it's free, but if you'd like to skip the line you can buy tickets.
We're not sure yet who will be singing with Bad Brains (though it's not HR), but maybe with Cro-Mags on the lineup John Joseph will sing like he's done before. Both Bad Brains and Cro-Mags play the festival's punk stage, which is curated by Sacha Jenkins, who's in The White Mandingos with Darryl of Bad Brains and Murs. Other punk bands on the bill include Trash Talk, Body Count, and Fishbone.

Chimurenga Renaissance is the project of Tendai ("Baba") Maraire of avant-rap group Shabazz Palaces and Hussein Kalonji, who put out their debut album, riZe vadZimu riZe, earlier this year on Seattle's Brick Lane label. The album features Baba's fellow Shabazz member Palaceer Lazaro (aka Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler), frequent Shabazz collaborators THEESatisfaction, M1 of Dead Prez and more. It definitely sounds like something out of Shabazz Palaces' out-there world of rap, and should appeal to fans of that group, THEESatisfaction, etc. Here's an excerpt from Pitchfork's review:
The album filters traditional Zimbabwean music through Maraire's contemporary hip-hop lens in a way that should feel accessible to anyone with an interest in experimental-leaning rap. Maraire approaches rapping more directly than Lazaro, layering his verses bluntly on top of the psychedelic sprawl of his instrumentation rather than weaving himself through it. He's also more explicitly political, handling talking points in a way that feels reminiscent of Digable Planets' first two albums, but with a somberness that places him more in line with someone like Talib Kweli. Maraire speaks to Zimbabwe's history ("chimurenga" translates to "struggle"), but this is classic message rap that spans regionality--music that shuns crooked cops, fancy sneakers, Mercedes Benzes, Islamophobia, fake romances, corporate sponsorships, the media, the system. You can listen to the whole album on RDIO and stream two tracks below.
Chimurenga Renaissance don't have a tour scheduled at the moment, but they will be in NYC this weekend for a one-off at Union Pool on Saturday (6/7) with Smoota. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Show flyer below.

While Sub Pop officially began in 1986, their offices opened in 1988 which they're using as an excuse to celebrate royally:
Sub Pop Records is visibly full of itself in sharing the initial lineup for our 25th anniversary celebration, the Sub Pop Silver Jubilee, to be held July 13th in Seattle, Washington. The event will feature music and comedy performances from artists from the label's roster and beyond, both past and present. And pat their own back they will, the Sub Pop Silver Jubilee snagging appearances from Mudhoney (who play NYC soon), Greg Dulli, J Mascis, Father John Misty (him too), Shabazz Palaces with THEESatisfaction (ditto), Pissed Jeans (and them), The Baptist Generals (yep), Shearwater, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth (feat. Additional bands (like maybe The Postal Service???) and events will be announced.
If you're going, a suggested $5 donation at collection stations at the Jubilee will get you a limited-edition tote bag, set to benefit "local charities like 90.3FM KEXP, Northwest Harvest and the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation."

THEESatisfaction at Bowery Ballroom in 2011 (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
Frank Ocean may have put out the best contemporary R&B album of the year, but THEESatisfaction definitely have the weirdest. The Shabazz Palaces collaborators released their debut, awE naturalE, earlier this year via Sub Pop and having been playing shows in support of it, including some with Shabazz Palaces. THEESatisfaction gives the R&B formula a similar treatment to the one Shabazz gives hip hop, pulling from the appeal of the genre's golden age but blowing it out with futuristic ideas and touches of experimentalism. If you've yet to hear awE naturalE, you can stream the whole thing below.
The duo have announced more dates in support of the album for this year which brings them back to NYC on October 25 at Glasslands. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (8/24) at 7 AM. Set your alarm?
A list of all currently known dates and the album stream are below.
