Flatbush Zombies at North Coast 2013 (more by James Richards IV)
Flatbush Zombies

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...

Flatbush Zombies, Bodega Bamz @ Irving Plaza
This is is a great double bill for the NYC weird-rap scene, headlined by maniacal druggy trio Flatbush Zombies and opened by A$AP collaborator Bodega Bamz.

Ida Maria @ Mercury Lounge
Norwegian singer-songwriter Ida Maria, once known for her wildcard electric performances, returns for her first NYC shows in some time. Will "Oh My God" still have the same punch?

Jagwar Ma, Fascinator @ Bowery Ballroom
With a debut album that owes more than a little to the early-'90s Madchester rave scene, Jagwar Ma will be twistin' your mellon (man) with sunshine vibes to spare. Sold out.

Mellowhigh @ Gramercy Theatre
Another bunch of odd rappers, but this time from the opposite coast, MellowHIgh is the trio of Odd Future members Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, and Left Brain.

John Grant @ Rough Trade
John Grant's Pale Green Ghosts is Rough Trade Shops' #1 album of 2013 so this show at their new NYC store has potential to be special. Though you can really say that about any John Grant show. Tonight's show is free with purchase of his new LP.

Twin Sister, Leapling, Ava Luna, Celestial Shore, Zula, Empress Of (DJ set) @ Silent Barn
This is a "farewell party" for Big Snow Buffalo Lodge, which shut its doors in July without a proper sendoff. Tonight it gets one...at Silent Barn.

Luke Temple, Chris Bear, MEMs (5), Eliot Krimsky @ Union Pool
This is the first week of Luke Temple's "improvisational" December residency. Expect the unexpected. Also, expect Chris from Grizzly Bear to be a part of tonight.

Elton John @ Madison Square Garden
With close to fifty years of pop/rock songwriting and a new album out this year that at least Rolling Stone likes, Elton John takes over MSG for what will surely be a night of hits.

Golem, The Unemployed Fortune Tellers, Minnie Tonka @ Glasslands
The Festival of Lights celebrations continue with the annual Hanukkah show from klezmer punk band Golem.

Ask Me Another @ The Bell House
John Hodgman, Lizz Winstead, and Al Jacobs will feature in this "rambunctious hour that blends brainteasers and local pub trivia night with comedy and music." Sold out.

Benji B, Juan Atkins, J. Rocc, Jay Daniel @ The Panther Room
You may know Benji B as the man behind the orchestral rearrangements of Flying Lotus, TNGHT, Kanye West, Drake, Jeremih, and others that surfaced earlier this year. Not sure what he'll be stirring up tonight, but it will surely be a special night, as it's the NYC installment of his London party Deviation. Also on the bill is Detroit techno vet Juan Atkins, Stones Throw associate J.Rocc and Detroit newcomer Jay Daniel. Tickets for tonight's party are still available. Check out Benji B's orchestral video below.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our full NYC show calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

Hudson Mohawke (right) w/ TNGHT at Central Park (more by Robert Altman)
HudMo

Hudson Mohawke, the Scottish trap producer who is one half of TNGHT (with Lunice) and recently contributed to Kanye and Drake's new albums, announced that he'll be returning to North America to headline an INPUT party at Brooklyn's Output on December 5. Tickets for the party are available here and here. It's his only announced date at the moment. Show flyer below.

As discussed, HudMo's TNGHT partner Lunice will play NYC even sooner as part of the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival. Stay tuned for more details on that.

HudMo's Scottish pal Rustie just contributed to the new Danny Brown album, which you can now stream.

Flyer for the Output show and Hudson Mohawke's recent remix of Jackson and His Computer Band's "Vista," below...

Disclosure / Mobb Deep
Disclosure & TNGHT @ Central Park - 8/6/2013
Disclosure & TNGHT @ Central Park - 8/6/2013

Central Park Summerstage may have gotten its dance show of the summer last night when UK house/garage crossover duo Disclosure, abrasive trap duo TNGHT, and another house-y producer Julio Bashmore took over the stage for one funky night in the park.

Julio kicked things off bright and early at 6 PM, which isn't really the appropriate time at all for his music (and unfortunately his set at Warm Up this Saturday will likely face the same problem), but it was a nice primer for what was to come, and I hope to be catching him in a dark club sooner than later.

Though still in the light, TNGHT fared much better, and it really seemed like as many people came to see them as Disclosure. Lunice spent at least half of their set acting as a hypeman, and rapping along to some of the verses they dropped, which included Rick Ross, Danny Brown, and best of all, the excellent "Blood On The Leaves," which they helped produce for Kanye's Yeezus. Aside from playing the music of other rappers, the real treat came when TNGHT brought out legendary Queens rap duo Mobb Deep, who performed "Quiet Storm" and "Shook Ones."

Then finally, once the sky fully blackened, Disclosure came on stage. These guys have come really far since their first trip to NYC less than a year ago, and from the reactions of the sold-out crowd, you'd know it in a second. It was all arms in the air, constant dancing, and singing every word to the big hits ("White Noise," "You & Me") as well as the slightly odder ones ("When A Fire Starts to Burn," "F For You") and the older cuts too ("Boiling," "What's In Your Head"). Like we thought they would, they brought out Jessie Ware to sing "Confess to Me" and "Running," and Sam Smith for "Latch." Excellent show, and a very excellent light show too, I should add.

After the show, Disclosure headed over to The Wall on W 30th St to DJ a sold-out afterparty. We missed that one, but it looks like it was pretty packed. Did you go? How was it?

More pictures and videos of the guest appearances from Central Park, below...

Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013
Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013
Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013

After entering with a robed choir behind him, R. Kelly starts stringing together his hits, medley style. A verse, a chorus, and then on to the next. Songs about "getting freaky in the club," the kitchen, the car, wherever. Kelly was the subject of a years-long investigation over child-pornography charges, but was eventually acquitted in 2008. None of that appears to matter to anyone left in the park tonight, as one of the largest crowds in Pitchfork history flocks to check out the dominant R&B performer of the last two decades. The Union Park crowd reaction isn't quite as over-the-top as that of his typical audience, but the dancing continues to escalate until the set peaks with "When a Woman's Fed Up" and the stepping songs "Happy People" and "Step in the Name of Love," accompanied by white balloons. Kelly saves "I Believe I Can Fly" for the encore, and this time white-dove balloons fill the sky. [Chicago Tribune]
Pitchfork Music Festival 2013 wrapped up on Sunday (7/21) with its most hip hop heavy day, including sets from rappers El-P, Killer Mike, Lil B, and Tree, plus rap producers TNGHT and Evian Christ (who both happen to be Kanye collaborators). And not exactly rap, but in that real there were also sets from MIA and obscure up-and-comer R. Kelly. It wasn't all hip hop though. Sunday also gave us sets from Foxygen (whose singer, Sam France, continued his streak of climbing at festivals), Yo La Tengo, Waxahatchee, Autre Ne Veut, Glass Candy, and more. Pictures of the final day of the festival are in this post.

If you haven't been keeping up with our coverage of Pitchfork festival, day 1 pictures and review are HERE, and more pictures are HERE and HERE. Day 2 pictures and review are HERE and more pictures are HERE. Day 3 pictures continue below...

Jessie Ware at Webster Hall in April (more by Robert Altman)
Jessie Ware

Jessie Ware's rise shows no signs of stopping. Her last trip to NYC brought her to Webster Hall, and she's now just announced another run of North American dates to go down this fall and bring her to her largest headlining NYC show yet, Roseland Ballroom on November 2. Tickets for that show are not on sale yet, but you can check Ticketmaster for updates.

Jessie also has some US dates in early August following her appearance at Chicago's Lollapalooza. Those dates include a Boston show on August 5, a Baltimore show on August 7, and nothing on August 6, the day her collaborators Disclosure play Central Park Summerstage with TNGHT and Julio Bashmore. We've already wondered if Sam Smith is going to appear with Disclosure at that show, and now it doesn't seem impossible that Jessie could too.

Disclosure also, like Jessie, play Lollapalooza. And if they were to join each other on stage there, it wouldn't be the first time they did that at a US festival this year.

All dates are listed, along with her video for the Julio Bashmore-produced "Imagine It Was Us," below...

Yeezus

We're still waiting til Tuesday (6/18) for one of the most anticipated albums of the year -- Kanye West's Yeezus -- to drop, but something tells us it may have surfaced on the internet a little early. Assuming what going around is the final version of the album, it's pretty consistent with Kanye's mini-rant at Governors Ball about not caring about the radio anymore; this is some of his most anti-commercial music yet. Rather than the lush string/horn arrangements he used on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the melodic R&B-style beats of 808s and Heartbreaks or the borderline-electropop of Graduation, on Yeezus Kanye is all about dark, distorted synth maximalism. On "On Sight" those synths were reportedly worked on with Daft Punk, he's got a TNGHT track on "Blood on the Leaves," and that's Evian Christ on "I'm In It."

He's pretty dark, lyrically, too and dominates most of the vocals on the record. Ye's been known to get heavy on the guest spots, but they're pretty low-key here. Not that they're coming from low-key people of course. The full version of "New Slaves" features Frank Ocean crooning at the end, a track called "Hold My Liquor" transitions from a Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) hook into a Chief Keef hook, and rumor has it that "God" appears on "I Am a God." I guess he really is talking back.

Kanye also brought in outside producer/Def Jam founder Rick Rubin (who just discussed the album at length) to help him out.

What may very well be the official tracklist for the album is below. Check that out and let us know your thoughts on Yeezus.

Julio Bashmore
Julio Bashmore

Bristol, UK house producer Julio Bashmore has released some singles and EPs over the past few years, like "Au Seve," the first release on his own Boardwalk label, and earlier this year he provided the dancefloor-ready beat to Jessie Ware's "Imagine It Was Us" single (and some of her Devotion LP). He also released a collaborative single with Kowton called "Mirror Song" this month via Boardwalk, which was backed by Kowton's new track, "And What?." You can check out the video for "Mirror Song" and a stream of "And What?" below.

Julio is set to come to North America for a tour here this August. That tour includes his opening slot at the previously discussed Disclosure/TNGHT co-headlining show at Central Park Summerstage on August 6 (tickets), and his appearance at the just-announced Warm Up summer series at MoMA PS1. Julio plays Warm Up on August 10 with Detroit techno vets Octave One (live), Hyetal, and DJ Dodger Stadium (aka Jerome LOL and Samo Sound Boy). Tickets for all Warm Up shows go on sale June 5 at noon.

Hyetal, who also hails from Bristol, makes UK-style dubstep under his own name, and is also part of the duo Velour with Julio Bashmore. Earlier this year, Velour released the dancey single "Speedway" b/w "Dial," which you can stream both tracks from below. Hyetal's new solo album, Modern Worship, comes out on June 4 via True Panther, and you can stream two tracks from that album below too. His appearance at Warm Up is his only currently announced North American date.

All Julio Bashmore dates are listed, along with the tour flyer and streams/videos, below...

Disclosure at MHOW last month (more by Jason Bergman)
Disclosure

Yesterday (4/22), Summerstage announced its 2013 season. But one of the shows that was not on that announcement and was just revealed today is a co-headlining double bill by dance duos Disclosure and TNGHT at Central Park Summerstage on August 6 with support from Julio Bashmore. The show starts at 6 PM so the only downside of this is that it might not be dark yet during Disclosure or TNGHT's set depending on which one goes first. But that aside, this is going to be one of wildest Summerstage shows of the summer. Tickets go on sale Friday (4/26) at noon. The show happens right after Disclosure plays Lollapalooza. TNGHT doesn't play that festival, but they do play a different Chicago festival in July, Pitchfork.

Disclosure recently announced that their debut album, Settle, will be out June 3 via PMR. It features previously released singles, "White Noise" (feat. AlunaGeorge) and "Latch" (feat. Sam Smith), in addition to the just-released track, "You & Me" (feat. Eliza Doolittle). If you didn't hear that one yet, it's just as awesome as their previous tracks and ups the excitement even more for that album to drop. Check it out below.

TNGHT also slightly less recently revealed a new track in support of their tour which just hit Coachella twice and NYC once. The track is called "Acrylics" and it's even more of a banger than anything on last year's self titled EP. Stream that one below as well.

All dates for both Disclosure and TNGHT are listed, along with both song streams, below...

TNGHT
TNGHT

Production duo TNGHT (aka Hudson Mohawke and Lunice), who are playing this year's Pitchfork Festival, are about to kick off their North American tour this month, which surrounds their appearances at Coachella. That tour was initially supposed to hit NYC for shows at Webster Hall on April 16 and 17 but TNGHT have cancelled the April 16 date. They're still playing on April 17 though and tickets for that show are still available. Updated dates are listed below.

TNGHT also produced the track "Lay It Down," which appears on Lil Wayne's new album I Am Not A Human Being II. Nicki MInaj is also on that track and you can stream it below.

Wayne is supporting that album on a huge tour with T.I. (who recently played NYC at Best Buy Theater) and Future. That tour hits the NYC area on July 19 at Jones Beach and July 24 at PNC Bank Arts Center. Tickets for those shows are not on sale yet but you can check ticketmaster for updates.

TNGHT

Hip hop production duo TNGHT (aka Hudson Mohawke and Lunice) is quickly becoming larger than the sum of its parts, and after playing Music Hall of Williamsburg in November (one of three international shows that month), TNGHT have announced their return to NYC, which will happen at the larger Webster Hall on April 17, in between their sets at this year's Coachellas. It's one of a few upcoming dates for TNGHT scheduled at the moment, including a just-announced slot at Barcelona's Sonar Festival. Tickets for the Webster Hall show go on sale Friday (2/15) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (2/13) at noon. All currently known TNGHT dates are listed below.

At TNGHT's last NYC show, Kanye West came out on stage with them as they dropped his track, "Cold." Following that appearance, and the fact that TNGHT member Hudson Mohawke contributed production to Kanye's Cruel Summer album, it's maybe not so surprising to learn that Hudson Mohawke has signed to Very GOOD Beats, the production component of Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music label (he will also keep his pre-existing contract with Warp). The other half of TNGHT, Lunice, also recently posted a mix (via Pigeons & Planes) that features TNGHT's remix of G.O.O.D. Music's "Clique." And, TNGHT have shared their new-ish track, "R U Ready," which Kanye was heard playing at a Victoria's Secret party during Fashion Week 2012. You can stream that track and Lunice's mix below. Why G.O.O.D. Music didn't just sign TNGHT instead of only Hudson Mohawke? Don't question Kanye West.

Pitchfork Albums

Today Pitchfork posted the first half (well, first 30 albums) of their Top 50 Albums of 2012 list. There are some surprises on it, like Peaking Lights and Sharon Van Etten, who seemed more likely to end up on their Honorable Mentions list due to their relatively lower scores and the fact that most of the albums on this list were awarded Best New Music throughout the year. Cat Power and Hot Chip also make it, both of whose new albums seemed to have received less love from Pitchfork than previous releases by those artists. A Rustie Essential Mix also makes the list even though his actual album which came out last year didn't make their 2011 list. And of course the expected ones end up there too like Purity Ring, Julia Holter, Schoolboy Q, Miguel, and more. The remaining 20 will be revealed tomorrow (Friday, 12/21).

Check out their 50-30 picks below...

Pitchfork Top Tracks

Pitchfork just posted their much anticipated list of the top 100 tracks of 2012. The #1 slot went to... Grimes! Whether you thought the whole of her album Visions was good or not, it was hard to deny the charms of "Oblivion." (Having that great video didn't hurt either.) Do you think it deserved to top the list? If not then what song should've?

You can check out P4K's entire hot 100 of 2012 below.

Jeff of Passion Pit in Austin in September (more by Tim Griffin)

Passion Pit do a great job of combining pop songwriting and forward-thinking electronic music trends, so when we reached out to their members for a list of their favorite albums of the year, it makes sense that the list has a pretty even split of both of things. The list comes from bassist Jeff Apruzzese and includes the knob-turning greatness of Todd Terje, Disclosure, TNGHT, Scuba, and more, combined with the pop sensibilities of Alt-J, Tame Impala, Alabama Shakes, and more. You can check out Jeff's whole list below.

As mentioned, Passion Pit will come to NYC for their largest headlining show here yet on February 8 at Madison Square Garden with Matt & Kim. Tickets for that show are still available.

A list of all Passion Pit dates and Jeff's 2012 Top 10 are below.

Kanye w/ TNGHT at MHOW - 11/30/12 (via Holly Liss)
Kanye TNGHT

TNGHT (aka Lunice and Hudson Mohawke) played Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday (11/30), their third of three shows in November (the other two were in London and Toronto). While on stage, they dropped Kanye West's track, "Cold" off of his Cruel Summer album, which Hudson Mohawke did contribute some production to (but not for that song). And though he didn't actually do much, Kanye himself came out on stage for about 20 seconds during the song to hype the crowd. You can watch a video of the appearance below (via Nah Right).

You can catch Kanye for a longer period of time at the upcoming 12/12/12 Sandy benefit at MSG and at his three pre-New Year's Eve shows in Atlantic City.

TNGHT have also recently made fans out of Flying Lotus aka Captain Murphy and Kendrick Lamar, the latter who freestyled over their track, "Higher Ground" for Gilles Peterson's BBC 6 radio show. A stream of that freestyle and the TNGHT/Kanye video, below...

Captain Murphy aka Flying Lotus
Flying Lotus

If you aren't already familiar with new rapper Captain Murphy, who first appeared on the Adult Swim single, "Between Friends" with Flying Lotus and Earl Sweatshirt, he had been keeping his identity concealed but many rumors circulated that Captain Murphy was the rapper alter ego of FlyLo himself, or a member of Odd Future. He released his impressive debut mixtape, Duality, as one long audio file in a video (which you can watch below) but has since released a deluxe edition with the tracks separated and bonus material, which you can download for free HERE. Most of the mixtape was produced by Flying Lotus and also included production from Brainfeeder producers Jeremiah Jae, Samiyam, and Teebs, plus hip hop production greats Madlib and Just Blaze, and a beat by upcoming duo TNGHT. The full tracklist is below.

If you've been following along with all the Captain Murphy insanity, you may know that he made his live debut last night (11/28) in LA at The Airliner. And as you can see in the picture above from the show, Captain Murphy is in fact Flying Lotus (via Complex). FlyLo has since taken to twitter to comment on the identity revealing.

Mixtape video and tracklist below...

TNGHT

TNGHT, the all-star instrumental hip hop duo of Lunice and Hudson Mohawke, who surfaced earlier this year with a self titled EP on Warp, have announced two North American shows to take place this November, after their show at London's Oval Space (11/15). The first happens in Toronto on November 29 at The Opera House with BADBADNOTGOOD and Mymanhenri and the second happens in NYC the next day, November 30 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with guests. TIckets for the NYC show go on sale Friday (10/26) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (10/24) at noon.

A list of all dates, fliers for their upcoming shows, and a recent live video of the duo are below.

Danny Brown at MoMA PS1 - 8/25/12 (via @gjhart)
Danny Brown

Perhaps keeping MoMA PS1′s contemporary aesthetic in mind, [Danny] Brown started his set with, "Witit," a bonus track from the re-release of his 2011 album XXX. "Witit" was the perfect starter for the first half of the set, which solely featured songs and verses from 2012. The crowd didn't seem to be as familiar with his recent works, especially his guest verses from Childish Gambino's "Toxic" and Ab-Soul's "Terrorist Threats," but they were engaged nonetheless. "Black Brad Pitt" and "Blueberry," tracks with EDM (electronic dance music) instrumentals and producers, had people particularly enthralled. A number of rappers are attempting to embrace EDM without compromising their gruff images, but few do it as comfortably as Brown who makes a living on both sides of the proverbial fence. [Respect Mag]
Danny Brown came to NYC over the weekend (8/25) for Warm Up at MoMA PS1 with Just Blaze, Nick Catchdubs, BAIO, (of Vampire Weekend), and The Stallions. FADER caught up with Danny Brown, Nick Catchdubs, and Just Blaze at the show and interviewed them, which you can watch spliced with clips of their sets in a video below. As mentioned, Danny Brown and Just Blaze team up again on Monday (9/3) at City Winery's backyard for a Fool's Gold Day Off party with Flosstradamus, Flatbush Zombies, French Montana, and others. That party goes from 2PM-8PM and is free and all ages. Danny returns to NYC when his tour with A$AP Rocky and Schoolboy Q hits Roseland Ballroom on September 27 (tickets).

In related news, a video recently surfaced from a show that promoters Livin Proof put on in London this past July. In the video, Danny Brown is seen in the studio with TNGHT (aka Lunice and Hudson Mohawke), and many are speculating that it means Danny Brown and TNGHT have collaborative material in the works. If it's true, maybe it will sound something like this?

The Livin Proof video, the video interview from MoMA PS1, and a list of all remaining tour dates are below.

The Zombies play their first of two NYC shows at Highline Ballroom tonight.

Brooklyn DIY venues Death By Audio, Secret Project Robot, Silent Barn, The Wallet, Big Snow Buffalo Lodge, Flux Factory, Roulette, and Shea Stadium will be competing in a basketball tournament at Cooper Park today starting at noon with live music from CSC Funk Band.

The Mad Decent Block Party goes down today in Williamsburg Park and the official afterparty is a three minute walk away at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Lollapalooza continues in Chicago today. If you're not there you can stream it live. Hopefully the weather is better than yesterday. If you missed them, check out pics of day 1 HERE.

Lunice, who plays the Mad Decent Block Party today, is also 1/2 of the duo TNGHT, who recently made a video for "Bugg'n," which you can watch below.
