Last night was the big IMAX Game of Thrones event where they screened the show's Season 4 finale at theaters around the country. A lot of people went just to get a first look at the Game of Thrones Season 5 trailer which premiered at the event. Reports are, the show will seriously begin to diverge from Georger RR Martin's books, and will likely merge 2005's A Feast for Crows and 2011's A Dance with Dragons' stories, which followed different characters along parallel timelines. Vulture points out that, at least from the trailer, a new contender to the Iron Throne that makes his debut in A Dance with Dragons may have been excised from the story entirely. We shall see. Of course, an "unofficial" version of the trailer has made its way to the internet today which you can watch in its muffled, in-and-out-of-focus splendor, below. One thing you can make out is TV on the Radio's cover of David Bowie's "Heroes" which was recorded in 2009 for a Warchild benefit album.

UPDATE: They've released the official trailer online, and you can watch that below.

In other news, it looks like fans of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series are going to have to keep waiting for the next book. HarperCollins told The Guardian today that Winds of Winter (the title of the next book) is not on their 2015 release schedule. "I have no information on likely delivery," Jane Johnson of HarperCollins said. "These are increasingly complex books and require immense amounts of concentration to write. Fans really ought to appreciate that the length of these monsters is equivalent to two or three novels by other writers."

Clearly, GRRM is busy, busy writing. Or turning a former bowling alley in his Santa Fe hometown into something called the House of Eternal Return:

The artist collective Meow Wolf outlined its vision Thursday for the complex, which was purchased and is being renovated by author George R.R. Martin with Meow Wolf as the tenant. It is slated for a fall opening.

It will include a room for children's arts programs, as well as 19 affordable artists' studios with shared space for collaboration. A gift shop, gallery for emerging artists, and murals on inner and outer walls are planned.

But the major draw will be a House of Eternal Return, built on the 14,000 square feet where the bowling lanes used to be and offering 20,000 square feet of explorable space as different levels are added. More than 75 artists will collaborate on creating niches and crannies - some 50 to 70 of them - to give visitors a feeling of passing through a portal to a different time and place every time they open a door. - [Albuquerque Journal]

To tide you over till Game of Thrones Season 5 premieres on April 12, the S4 DVD/Blu-Ray set will be out February 17 and you can buy illustrated compendium The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones now.

Watch the S5 trailer, below...

Abbi and Ilana of 'Broad City'
IMAGE

Two very popular comedies about struggling 20-somethings in NYC return to TV soon. Lena Dunham's Girls returns for its fourth season this Sunday (1/11) on HBO. Among the plotlines is Hannah (Dunham) leaving Greenpoint for the University of Iowa's prestigious Writer's Workshop. (The real UI denied HBO's request to film on campus, so they filmed around the city instead.) Most of the story still happens in Brooklyn, probably at bars and coffee shops you've been to. You can watch the Girls Season 4 trailer below.

Then on Wednesday (1/14) it's the Season 2 premiere of Comedy Central's wildly popular Broad City. Creators/stars (and UCB alumns) Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer use New York City as a character, maybe the most NYC-specific show since Seinfeld (or Bored to Death): the first episode of Season 1 featured them trying to score tickets to a secret Lil Wayne show at Bowery Ballroom -- as well as a lot of local comedians as regulars, including Chris Gethard and scene-stealer Hannibal Buress. Like the first series, Season 2 promises to have its fair share of guest stars, like Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, and TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone (as an employee at Main Drag Music). The show also revisits Abbi's obsession with Bed Bath & Beyond, which you can see in a clip below. There's also a couple Season 2 trailers below .

If you have somehow not seen Broad City yet, it's very funny and you can binge-watch Season 1 via DVD/BluRay, and it's streaming for free on Comedy Central's website and mobile app, and you can also watch on Amazon (free if you have Prime), Google Play, etc.

toubin

Jonathan Toubin was busy during the holidays, and that is a state that will not change for him in the near future. He'll spend every night in January playing somewhere in NYC as part of his "2015 Subway Tour." Tonight (1/5) he's at The Commodore spinning records and here are a few highlights from the upcoming month:

And on January 31 at Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center it's a revival of Toubin's "Animal Train Happening" party (which originally took place at Glasslands, circa 2007 - 2010) featuring James Chance And The JC's, Mystery Lights, a special guest, DJ Ian Svenonius and more. We love year-end lists -- reading them, making them, arguing about them. BrooklynVegan editors Andrew Sacher and Bill Pearis have once again figured out their favorite albums of the year which you can check out, with commentary, below. Someday we may be able to come to an agreement on an official BV year-end list, but as you'll see there's not a lot of commonality between their two lists. (Specifically, there is zero commonality.) Which is ok! Diff'rent Strokes to rule the world. This year, they've also added their Top 20 favorite songs as well.

Find out what made their lists, below...

SPIN

SPIN returned with their Top Albums of 2014 list today. It's got a lot of the indie albums that usually show up on these lists (Caribou, Future Islands, FKA twigs, Parquet Courts, Cloud Nothings, How to Dress Well, Swans, St. Vincent, Real Estate, etc), a handful of rap albums (YG, Young Thug, Shabazz Palaces, Run the Jewels, Schoolboy Q, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, etc), metal (Pallbearer), punk (Against Me!, Joyce Manor), mainstream pop (Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert), and a couple headscratchers (Betty Who at #11?). You-know-who scores the #1 slot once again here. Check it out for yourself below.

Rough Trade NYC on Record Store Day 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
RT

As they usually are, Rough Trade Shops are one of the first this year to post their favorite albums of 2014 list. It's 100 albums long and mostly filled with the bigger indie and indie-related releases of the year, but there's a few surprises in there too. Mark Kozelek will not be happy to see that The War On Drugs placed #2, 8 higher than the Sun Kil Moon record. Mark should be proud that he made the list not once, but TWICE though. His Christmas album landed at #84. Run the Jewels, who are not on it all, have started a "Suck My Dick Rough Trade" chant. Check out their full list below and see more on each album here.

Meanwhile, Rough Trade the NYC venue is open this weekend with Sallie Ford / Crooked Fingers tonight, followed by two shows from The Dream Syndicate.

List below...

Radiohead

"There was a certain amount of science to it. An entire week of work experience students left the office thinking that cutting-edge music journalism in 2014 mostly involves calculating which bands have been mentioned most in NME in the past two years, then hunting out references to the bands that influenced those acts online and finally adding up the number of times each influence came up. This gave us a rough list which our editorial team - heads swimming with all of the bands that Wolf Alice (or whoever) have raved on about over 4am ciders - then took to the pub, tore into shreds, fought and shouted about and finally reconstructed in the rundown of 100 you see in the mag today. The Beatles didn't make it. Sorry." [NME[
NME went ahead and listed who they think the 100 most influential musicians and bands are (their latest cover story). Radiohead topped the list. Read the rest with justifications at NME, or just look at their full list below...

TVOTR

TV on the Radio have remained an active band and are on upcoming festivals like Treasure Island and Riot Fest (and the members, who are now scattered on both coasts, are even more active on their own with their various projects), but it's been over three years since they've released an album. That will change this year, when they follow 2011's Nine Types of Light with Seeds, which is due out in the fall. It's their first since leaving Interscope, and will instead come out on Harvest Records (also home of Morrissey). It's also their first since TVOTR member Gerard Smith sadly passed away.

Ice Balloons

The first time I saw Ice Balloons, I thought they were way too off the wall to ever gain popularity outside of basement shows and Rubulad parties. But is that such a bad thing? This lurching, fuzzed-out act--fronted, naturally, by a half-man, half-fly creature--is just the thing to make you feel you've stepped into another dimension, especially when accompanied by B.A. Miale's trippy projections. [New York Observer - 'Best Bands of 2013']
NYC's Ice Balloons count TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone and Wild Yaks' Rob Bryn as members (along with Sean Powell, Dan Scinta, Giselle Reiber, and B.A. Miale) and together they make a truly weird blend of psychedelic synths, art punk, noise, and other eccentric sounds. They're currently on the road for their first-ever tour with Kyp and Rob providing solo sets as support on select dates. The tour includes a NYC show on Thursday (3/13) at Death by Audio, and at that one, both Kyp and Rob will open. Likeminded Brooklyn trio Alien Trilogy are on the DbA bill as well. $7 at the door gets you in. All dates are listed below.

In 2013, they released their debut self-titled album, which you can stream, along with videos of two of its tracks, and the list of dates, below...

Kelis
Kelis

Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band, the newish band of TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe, did a Union Pool residency not too long ago, and they'll be playing another show in their hometown of NYC this Sunday (12/15) at Baby's All RIght with Endless Boogie. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Flyer below.

It's their only upcoming date at the moment, though Endless Boogie have other dates opening for Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks including MHOW on 2/27 (tickets).

Speaking of TV on the Radio, as discussed, member Dave Sitek is producing the new Kelis album, Food. That album was originally supposed to come out on Sitek's Federal Prism label this year, but it was just announced that she's instead releasing it on April 28 via her new label, Ninja Tune (!), a label mostly known for forward-thinking electronic music from Bonobo, Machinedrum, The Bug, and others. It's the first album that will not be on a major label for Kelis, who has had at least one major pop breakthrough. Kelis says of the signing:

I'm really happy to be partnering with Ninja Tune on my new record. This is the album I've wanted to make for a long time and I want the team around me to be as excited and energetic about it as I am. I'm also very happy to be working with some of the most creative people in the industry.
And the people at Ninja Tune note:
Entirely produced by Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), 'Food' is a soul record that's as raw and alternative as it is classic. In choosing Ninja as her new home, Kelis is another example of a world-class talent turning to the independent music world in order to work outside the constraints often put in place by major labels.
In other Ninja Tune news, we just posted a live Machinedrum video and an upcoming Floating Points show.

Flyer for HIggins Waterproof Black Magic Band show below...
