CSS

CSS' fourth album is titled Planta and will be out June 11 via SQE Music. That's the cover art above. The Brazilian band, currently a quartet following the departure of Adriano Cintra, made the record in Los Angeles with Dave Sitek. The album's first single, "Hangover," is a definite departure than the band's previous new wave-y sound and you can stream it below.

Further connections between Sitek and CSS happen this weekend (5/10) as the group play ATP in Camber Sands, UK which is curated by TV on the Radio. No formal announcement on a North American tour has been made but one seems to be forthcoming as CCS will play NYC on July 8 at Bowery Ballroom and July 9 at Brooklyn Bowl. Both shows are with IO Echo.

Tickets to Bowery Ballroom and Brooklyn Bowl go on sale Friday (5/10) at noon with an AmEx presale for Bowery starting Wednesday (5/8) at noon.

UPDATE (5/13): There's a full tour now. All current tour dates are listed below.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ Union Pool, 12/8/2012
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Yeah Yeah Yeahs teamed with Higgins Waterproof Blackmagic (a new side project from Tunde of TV on the Radio) and a DJ set from Creep at Union Pool last night (12/8). Yes, the room was absolutely minuscule for a band of the YYY's size, but the occasion was to help raise money for victims of Hurricane Sandy, specifically via Waves 4 Water (follow that link to donate if you can). The YYYs were a quartet for the evening, adding collaborator David Pajo to the mix on that rainy Saturday.

More pics from Union Pool are below, including one of the setlist (which included the new song "Despair" presumably from their forthcoming LP).

Tunde Adebimpe w/ TVOTR @ Radio City, April 2011 (more by Chris Gersbeck)
Tunde Adebimpe

TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe is teaming with artist/sculptor Ivan Navarro for what looks to be a one-of-a-kind performance. Dubbed "OÍDO: An Experiment in Sound and Sculpture" will take place at Saints Peter & Paul Theater in Williamsburg on December 15. Navarro's sculpture was created for the event and will be used like an instrument for the performance. The event is a fundraiser for PS 84's Rooftop Hydroponic Greenhouse Classroom. Tickets are on sale now and includes an opening reception with hor d'oeurves and beer by Brooklyn Brewery. There's an afterparty too with DJ Krycheck, which you can buy tickets for separately (same ticket link).

Meanwhile, Tunde will perform this Saturday (12/8) at Union Pool as part of Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band. They're the opening act for Yeah Yeah Yeahs which is a Hurricane Sandy relief benefit. That show is, no surprise, sold out.

Flyer for the OÍDO event is below.

John Joseph with Vernon Reid at Bowery Electric 11/6/2012
Rock for Light

Last night's Rock for Light benefit featured a rotating cast of musicians who all sat in on Bad Brains songs at Bowery Electric. The show, part of a benefit to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy (as well as Amnesty International), featured Bad Brains frontman H.R., as well as John Joseph of Cro-Mags, Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid, members of Antidote, TV on The Radio, The Mob, Extra Life, and many many more. Watch the entire performance below, right beside the setlist.

In related news, get pumped up for the new year by checking out Cro-Mags when they team with Sheer Terror for a show at Highline Ballroom on Dec 30. Tickets are still available.

Bad Brains have a new album on the way, too, due on November 20.

If you didnt make it to Bowery Electric, you can still contribute to help out victims of Hurricane Sandy. Donate to the American Red Cross here. You can also donate to Amnesty International here.

NY Mag

Grizzly Bear are on the cover of the new issue of NY Magazine, which makes two weeks in a row that Brooklyn was prominently featured.

Despite making it into Billboard's Top 10 with their new album, Shields, the band still aren't making a lot of money.

Check out pictures from the show they just played in Chicago with Lower Dens.

And speaking of Brooklyn, get ready for Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas.

"The Artwork of Robert Pollard & Tobin Sprout" is opening in Brooklyn soon. Meanwhile check out our recent Guided by Voices pictures from both Austin and the Deluna Fest in Florida.

Crystal Castles and HEALTH play Roseland on Wednesday (10/3). We're giving away tickets here and on our Facebook too.

Also on Wednesday, M83 plays Hammerstein Ballroom and we're giving away tickets to that on Facebook too. Tickets are also still on sale.

Another Facebook contest: win tickets to see Raveonettes and Melody's Echo Chamber at Webster Hall on Friday (10/5).

The Compact Disc turns 30 years old today. The first CD pressed in America was Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA (though Billy Joe's 52nd Street came out in Japan before that). What was the first CD you bought?

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen, Kenny's Castaways, where he used to play is hosting their final show tonight.

Producer and TV On the Radio member Dave Sitek has launched Federal Prism, "a new record label where Sitek will personally record, mix, produce, and release a series of limited edition 12-inch vinyl picture discs with a uniquely curator-driven perspective. The vinyl will be limited to 500 numbered copies each with a jacket personally hand silkscreened by Sitek."

Federal Prism's first release is "Destroyer" by Telepathe. "The b-side of the vinyl will feature a remix by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor with Alessandro Cortini and Atticus Ross. Sitek adds, "I told Trent I was starting my own label and would love to have him remix something on the first release. I sent him the session and before he actually said 'YES', he sent back this mighty dark space that he, Alessandro and Atticus had built for me! I was shocked and am certain I will have to keep ripping them off for years!"" It's on sale now.

Speaking of Trent Reznor, he says his his band How To Destroy Angels, have "formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP."

Scary: Ryan Adams revealed via Twitter: "Recording a track with my new pal @deadmau5 today. Sounds like BladeRunner starring Don Henley."

More scary: As if it wasn't bad enough that Bruno Mars has been announced as the host of the 10/20 episode of SNL, they're letting him be the musical performer for that episode too!

But here's some good news: Now That's What I Call Music 83 will reportedly be the last in the series.

more stuff below...

Womack and Albarn
Bobby and Damon

Bobby Womack, whose first new album in 18 years came out earlier this year, is performing a free show at the Apple's recently expanded and reopened SoHo Store on Tuesday (9/18). Making this a very special event are the album's producers -- Damon Albarn and XL Records exec Richard Russell -- who will be performing with Womack, along with Kwes, TV on the Radio's Jaleel Bunton, and Remi Kabaka. The short performance starts at 7 PM and will also feature a Q&A. It will be the first performance Womack will have played with this band. This announcement comes after Womack cancelled NYC shows a couple times over the summer due to illness.

If you can't make it to the Apple Store, Womack, Albarn and the rest of them will also be performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Friday (9/21). You can check out reheasal footage of Womack with this all-star band from earlier in the week below.

AfroPunk 2012
AfroPunk 2012
AfroPunk 2012

Hardcore punk rockers Cerebal Ballsy performed Saturday with a ferocity that commanded the seemingly peaceful crowd into a mosh pit. Later in the evening, the atmosphere switched into a groovy hipster paradise for all to enjoy as Erykah Badu jammed. The next day, Janelle Monae put on a performance with enough energy to power Manhattan. The performers were awesome - all of them - but they were merely a reflection of the movement known as Afropunk and the people of it.

The crowd was multi-everything - multi-cultural, multi-colored, multi-faceted, and multi-fashioned. - [Allhiphip.com]

Here's another set of photos from Day 2 of the 2012 Afro Punk Fest which featured a ton of great music -- all for free -- not to mention skateboarding and BMX competitions.

Our first set of Day 2 pictures is here, and you can see pics from Day 1 here and here. More pics from Day 2 are below.

AfroPunk 2012

Slamming together categories -- and, when appropriate, bodies -- is the ever-expanding mission of the annual Afro-Punk Festival, which returned last weekend to Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

It was an event summed up in action by one of its returning headliners, Janelle Monáe. She's an indefatigable song-and-dance bandleader who gleefully draws on African-American showmen like Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown and even Cab Calloway as her lyrics dip into science fiction. Her finale, "Come Alive (War of the Roses)," had a jitterbug-ready beat while Ms. Monáe crowd-surfed like a punk-rocker: off the stage, into the audience and back onstage for a few more snappy steps. - [NY Times]

Day 2 (8/26) of the 2012 Afro-Punk Fest was an incredibly stacked line-up, with TV on the Radio, Janelle Monáe (who was introduced by Pharrell Williams), Reggie Watts and Toro Y Moi just to name a few. Pictures from Sunday are in this post. Pictures of Day 1 (8/25) are here and here.

Rain Machine

As mentioned, the free Afropunk Festival returns to Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park on August 25-26. You can check out the full schedule for the fest at the bottom of this post. On the Sunday (8/26), the Green Stage will be headlined by TV on the Radio following sets by Toro y Moi and Reggie Watts and the Red Stage will be headlined by Janelle Monae.

Speaking of TV on the Radio, Kyp Malone's solo project Rain Machine has a NYC show coming up, that will take place soon after Afropunk at Union Pool on September 1 with Soft Location and Slowdance. No other Rain Machine dates to report at the moment.

Sinkane, who also plays Afropunk Fest, continues his residency at Zebulon tonight (8/20).

2012 Catalpa NYC Music Festival - Randall's Island
2012 Catalpa NYC Music Festival - Randall's Island
2012 Catalpa NYC Music Festival - Randall's Island

The inaugural Catalpa Festival got off to a soggy start on Saturday in Randalls Island Park, but the intermittent rain that turned the lawns in front of the stages into muddy bogs did little to dampen the enthusiasm of people who came out to see the Black Keys and TV on the Radio...

...The rain started again as the Black Keys took the stage at about 9:30. Yet several thousand people pressed up, some of the men lifting women up on their shoulders, as Dan Auerbach, the band's guitarist and vocalist, launched into "Howlin' for You." A few songs later, Mr. Auerbach and his partner, the drummer Patrick Carney, had the crowd singing along and dancing in the rain as they did "Dead and Gone" and "Gold on the Ceiling," two hits from their most recent album El Camino [NY Times].

The Catalpa Music Festival happened this weekend (July 28 - 29) on Randall's Island. Saturday's wet line-up included The Black Keys, TV on the Radio, Zola Jesus, Umphrey's McGee, Hercules & Love Affair and more. Did you go? How was it? Pictures from those bands and other Saturday performers are below.

In addition to the main stage bands, Catalpa features such added attractions as The High Times Magazine Reggae Stage, The Inflatable Church of Sham Marriages, a silent disco, food from some of New York City's "unique and top quality eateries" and more.

If you'd like to go for free, we are giving away a pair of weekend general admission passes to the fest. Details on how to enter are at the bottom of this post.

New Party Systems art
New Party Systems

Brooklyn bar and music venue Union Pool will host another Jonathan Toubin benefit show TONIGHT (1/18). The show will feature "a three ring circuit of cross-fading solos, duos, trios & big bands" with The Notekillers, Kyp Malone, Kid Millions, Greg Fox, and Bernard Gann. That big band they speak of? New Party Systems:

New Party Systems came together when four musician friends - Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio), David First (Notekillers), Greg Fox (X-Liturgy, Guardian Alien) and Bernard Gann (Liturgy) all ran into each other the same day at Zuccotti Park, early on during the Occupy Wall Street occupation. Out of that fateful meeting came the decision to form a music collective inspired by and supporting the movement. The video by director Toni Comas and producer Anna Franquesa feature people from all over the world, including musicians Martin Bisi, Kid Millions, Bob Ostertag and the students who were involved in the UC Davis pepper spray incident."
Purchase the song at Bandcamp. View the video and stream the songbelow.

Speaking of Jonathan Toubin benefits, there's also one going down in Chicago on Friday.

Speaking of TV on the Radio, they've been added to the Rolling Stones tribute show going down at Carnegie Hall. SnowBall

"The Snow Ball Music Festival [in 2011] was chill, in more ways than one. Besides the expected below freezing temperatures Avon gets in early March, the atmosphere of the festival and attitude of the attendees were very relaxed. The tents were set up on snow instead of concrete, and so dancing the first night was no small fete as everyone was slipping on the ice. By the end of the weekend, any movement at all was unpleasant as people were standing in puddles of water, beer, and probably some bodily fluids or stuck to the ground in thick mud. The crowd left their clubbing attire at home and sported their neon ski coats instead as they drifted through the clouds of cigarette and marijuana smoke. Despite the cold weather and the impossible dance floor, most importantly, the music was good." [cause=time]
The SnowBall Music Festival, for people not afraid to watch bands playing outside in freezing temperatures ("We recommend that you come prepared for snow and winter conditions. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 40° range during the day and in the teens at night. Please dress accordingly."), is returning to Vail Valley in Avon, CO from March 2 - 4, 2012. This year's lineup includes Big Boi, Big Freedia, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. (who just announced a Bowery Ballroom show), Deer Tick, Gauntlet Hair, Major Lazer, TV on the Radio, Thundercat, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and others (listed below)

Early bird and holiday special passes are sold out but regular passes and tickets for the festival are on sale now. Don't forget your "Warm Jackets, hats, gloves, and snow boots."

Current lineup below...

Adele

We already posted Pitchfork's and SPIN's, so... here's Rolling Stone's top 50 albums of 2011. It's got tons of big sellers and major label players taking high spots like Adele, Jay-Z and Kanye West, Paul Simon, and Lady Gaga, but then something unexpected like tUnE-yArDs places at #13. There are also some odd inclusions like Wavves' Life Sux EP and then some albums you could only find on a Rolling Stone list like SuperHeavy (the supergroup featuring Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and others). They also give shots to Little Dragon, Josh T Pearson, Das Racist, Wild Flag, and many more. Check out the full list below...

DOWNLOAD: Anna Calvi - Wolf Like Me (TVOTR cover) (MP3)

Anna Calvi

"It's been a breakout year for Anna Calvi -- one spent shuttling around the festival circuit in support of her Mercury Prize-nominated debut -- and the singer sounds positively exhausted.
When pressed during an early-afternoon telephone interview, the U.K. chanteuse admits she's conducting the chat while still in bed.
Understandable, perhaps, given the year she's had. But while Calvi says she spent only one month out of the past 12 at home in her London flat, she isn't yearning for a break. Immediately after finishing yet another upcoming tour, she plans to begin work on her sophomore record this March." [Winnipeg Free Press]
Anna Calvi's version of TV on the Radio's "Wolf Like Me" is out on iTunes TODAY, but you can also download it above and stream it below. Maybe the guys from TVOTR will be in the crowd to check out Anna at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn TONIGHT (12/13). Eleanor Friedberger and New Moods open the BV Holiday Party show. Some $8 tickets are still on sale!
