Governors Ball 2014

NYC music festival Governors Ball kicked off its 2014 edition yesterday (6/6) with sets from the reunited Outkast, Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, Grimes, TV on the Radio, Phoenix, Neko Case, La Roux, Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis, Washed Out, Janelle Monae, Kurt Vile, Run the Jewels (Killer Mike + El-P) and still more.

Outkast's much-anticipated set (like many of their other festival sets this year) started with both Big Boi and Andre 3000 on stage for tons of favorites right off the bat including "B.O.B.," "Gasoline Dreams, "ATLiens," "Rosa Parks," "Aquemini," "Ms. Jackson," and more. Then Big Boi did three songs alone, Andre did three alone (including "Hey Ya!" for which Janelle Monae came on stage to dance), and then another Outkast set. The second set ended with "The Whole World," for which they brought out Killer Mike to rap his verse. Pictures of all artists mentioned (and more), plus Outkast's setlist and a video of "Hey Ya!" are in this post.

GovBall continues today (6/7) with Diarrhea Planet taking the stage in about two hours (12:45 PM), and other sets include Jack White, Spoon, The Strokes, Disclosure, Broken Bells, Chance the Rapper, Deafheaven and more.

Ice Balloons

The first time I saw Ice Balloons, I thought they were way too off the wall to ever gain popularity outside of basement shows and Rubulad parties. But is that such a bad thing? This lurching, fuzzed-out act--fronted, naturally, by a half-man, half-fly creature--is just the thing to make you feel you've stepped into another dimension, especially when accompanied by B.A. Miale's trippy projections. [New York Observer - 'Best Bands of 2013']
NYC's Ice Balloons count TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone and Wild Yaks' Rob Bryn as members (along with Sean Powell, Dan Scinta, Giselle Reiber, and B.A. Miale) and together they make a truly weird blend of psychedelic synths, art punk, noise, and other eccentric sounds. They're currently on the road for their first-ever tour with Kyp and Rob providing solo sets as support on select dates. The tour includes a NYC show on Thursday (3/13) at Death by Audio, and at that one, both Kyp and Rob will open. Likeminded Brooklyn trio Alien Trilogy are on the DbA bill as well. $7 at the door gets you in. All dates are listed below.

In 2013, they released their debut self-titled album, which you can stream, along with videos of two of its tracks, and the list of dates, below...

Kelis
Kelis

Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band, the newish band of TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe, did a Union Pool residency not too long ago, and they'll be playing another show in their hometown of NYC this Sunday (12/15) at Baby's All RIght with Endless Boogie. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Flyer below.

It's their only upcoming date at the moment, though Endless Boogie have other dates opening for Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks including MHOW on 2/27 (tickets).

Speaking of TV on the Radio, as discussed, member Dave Sitek is producing the new Kelis album, Food. That album was originally supposed to come out on Sitek's Federal Prism label this year, but it was just announced that she's instead releasing it on April 28 via her new label, Ninja Tune (!), a label mostly known for forward-thinking electronic music from Bonobo, Machinedrum, The Bug, and others. It's the first album that will not be on a major label for Kelis, who has had at least one major pop breakthrough. Kelis says of the signing:

I'm really happy to be partnering with Ninja Tune on my new record. This is the album I've wanted to make for a long time and I want the team around me to be as excited and energetic about it as I am. I'm also very happy to be working with some of the most creative people in the industry.
And the people at Ninja Tune note:
Entirely produced by Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), 'Food' is a soul record that's as raw and alternative as it is classic. In choosing Ninja as her new home, Kelis is another example of a world-class talent turning to the independent music world in order to work outside the constraints often put in place by major labels.
In other Ninja Tune news, we just posted a live Machinedrum video and an upcoming Floating Points show.

Higgins

As mentioned, Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band, a newish project from TVotR's Tunde Adebimpe and drummer Ryan Sawyer, will release their debut EP on October 1 via their own ZNA Records. You can stream a track from that below.

In celebration of the EP, the group have an October residency at Brooklyn's Union Pool, playing every Sunday of the month. It's where the band made their live debut when they opened for Yeah Yeah Yeah's Hurricane Sandy relief benefit last December. They've also invited friends to open:

10/6: Little Shalimar and a quartet of Chris Corsano, Daniel Carter, Demian Richardson, and David Moss

10/13 : Leverage Models and Invisible Familiars

10/20: Soft Location and Abdoulaye Diabaté/Banning Eyre

10/27: William Tyler

No advance tickets for any of the residency shows. Check out a flyer for the residency and the song stream below.

TV on the Radio @ FYF 2013 (more by Wei Shi)
TV on the Radio

Having left Interscope back in the spring, the gears are clearly starting to move again for TV on the Radio who will now putting out music through guitarist Dave Sitek's Federal Prism label. They were just out in LA for the FYF Fest and have released a couple digital singles this summer, both of which have come with impressive videos. "Mercy" is probably the most immediate, driving rock song the band have done since the early days of "Wolf Like Me"; and "Million Miles" is more ethereally soulful. TVotR just performed "Mercy" last night on The Late Show with David Letterman last night (9/5) and you can watch that below.

The two tracks' respective videos are both productions of a MySpace project called Music Video Collaborations With Artists We Like. The funny, thoughtful one for "Million Miles" was co-directed by singer Tunde Adebimpe. They're both worth watching and you can do so below.

Meanwhile, you may remember that a Tunde Adebimpe side project, Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band (with Ryan Sawyer on drums), opened for Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Union Pool last November. The band will release their debut EP on October first via their own ZNA label. You can listen to a track from that, "The Blast, The Bloom," below.

FYF Fest 2013

Its really a sad state of affairs when a band making a scheduled appearance is news, but nevertheless it was somewhat of a surprise that Death Grips did make their headlining appearance (on the Miranda stage) at the first day of FYF Fest in LA on Saturday (8/24) while Yeah Yeah Yeahs played at the adjacent Carrie stage (yes, stages were named after Sex & The City characters). The two-day festival, which took place in LA State Historic Park over the weekend, also featured many other notables, including appearances from TV on the Radio, FLAG, a reunion set from The Locust, as well as sets from names like The Breeders, Waxahatchee, METZ, Joyce Manor, Ty Segall (who's in NYC for two shows this week), and more. Pictures from FYF including all of the mentioned artists above -- as well as shots of Jim Hamilton, Jonah Ray, Kumail Nanjiana, Crystal Antlers, Charles Bradley, Toro y Moi, Classixx, Nosaj Thing, comedians and more -- are in this post.

We'll have pictures from Day 2 soon. More pics from FYF Fest Day 1 below...

At this show, Superhuman Happiness will be premiering their score to How to Survive a Plague.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Webster Hall in April (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

NYC indie rock mainstays Yeah Yeah Yeahs are still on the heels of an awesomely weird new album, Mosquito, for which they played a relatively intimate release show at Webster Hall, which followed two far more intimate benefit shows in the year or so prior at Union Pool and Brooklyn Bowl. (They also had a set at this year's Brooklyn festival GoogaMooga.) And they're now set to do the exact opposite of that.

Like NYC bands The National and Vampire Weekend before them, YYYs have announced that they'll headline new Brooklyn arena Barclays Center on September 19! Tickets for their largest hometown show yet are not on sale yet go on sale Friday (7/19) at 11 AM with a presale starting Wednesday (7/17) at 11 AM.

In related news, TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek just remixed Mosquito track, "Despair," which you can listen to at Pitchfork.

All upcoming YYYs dates are listed, along with the video for the original version of "Despair," below...

Letterman

For those keeping score, your man Klaus has played drums in many many unpopular and unsignable bands since 1991. I've dragged my 1964 Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl 4 piece kit (2nd rack tom not shown) with 1965 Gretsch snare (all of which were purchased in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts for $175) from one end of the earth (the Northeast) to the other (the Midwest mostly) hundreds of times. 'Tis a gorgeous kit, in phenomenal condition, and I have endured hundreds if not millions of compliments regarding it's eye-watering beauty. I am a man who appreciates a nice set of drums. And I'm a man who appreciates a man who appreciates a nice set of drums. Therefore, I am a man who appreciates this wonderful compilation video featuring the great David Letterman appreciating his various musical guest's gear, focusing primarily, but not exclusively, drums. The video, and a list of who is in it, including GBV, Feist, Beirut, James Blake, The Strokes, Mastodon, St. Vincent, and many many more, is below. Behold!

CSS

CSS' fourth album is titled Planta and will be out June 11 via SQE Music. That's the cover art above. The Brazilian band, currently a quartet following the departure of Adriano Cintra, made the record in Los Angeles with Dave Sitek. The album's first single, "Hangover," is a definite departure than the band's previous new wave-y sound and you can stream it below.

Further connections between Sitek and CSS happen this weekend (5/10) as the group play ATP in Camber Sands, UK which is curated by TV on the Radio. No formal announcement on a North American tour has been made but one seems to be forthcoming as CCS will play NYC on July 8 at Bowery Ballroom and July 9 at Brooklyn Bowl. Both shows are with IO Echo.

Tickets to Bowery Ballroom and Brooklyn Bowl go on sale Friday (5/10) at noon with an AmEx presale for Bowery starting Wednesday (5/8) at noon.

UPDATE (5/13): There's a full tour now. All current tour dates are listed below.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ Union Pool, 12/8/2012
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Yeah Yeah Yeahs teamed with Higgins Waterproof Blackmagic (a new side project from Tunde of TV on the Radio) and a DJ set from Creep at Union Pool last night (12/8). Yes, the room was absolutely minuscule for a band of the YYY's size, but the occasion was to help raise money for victims of Hurricane Sandy, specifically via Waves 4 Water (follow that link to donate if you can). The YYYs were a quartet for the evening, adding collaborator David Pajo to the mix on that rainy Saturday.

More pics from Union Pool are below, including one of the setlist (which included the new song "Despair" presumably from their forthcoming LP).

Tunde Adebimpe w/ TVOTR @ Radio City, April 2011 (more by Chris Gersbeck)
Tunde Adebimpe

TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe is teaming with artist/sculptor Ivan Navarro for what looks to be a one-of-a-kind performance. Dubbed "OÍDO: An Experiment in Sound and Sculpture" will take place at Saints Peter & Paul Theater in Williamsburg on December 15. Navarro's sculpture was created for the event and will be used like an instrument for the performance. The event is a fundraiser for PS 84's Rooftop Hydroponic Greenhouse Classroom. Tickets are on sale now and includes an opening reception with hor d'oeurves and beer by Brooklyn Brewery. There's an afterparty too with DJ Krycheck, which you can buy tickets for separately (same ticket link).

Meanwhile, Tunde will perform this Saturday (12/8) at Union Pool as part of Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band. They're the opening act for Yeah Yeah Yeahs which is a Hurricane Sandy relief benefit. That show is, no surprise, sold out.

Flyer for the OÍDO event is below.

John Joseph with Vernon Reid at Bowery Electric 11/6/2012
Rock for Light

Last night's Rock for Light benefit featured a rotating cast of musicians who all sat in on Bad Brains songs at Bowery Electric. The show, part of a benefit to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy (as well as Amnesty International), featured Bad Brains frontman H.R., as well as John Joseph of Cro-Mags, Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid, members of Antidote, TV on The Radio, The Mob, Extra Life, and many many more. Watch the entire performance below, right beside the setlist.

In related news, get pumped up for the new year by checking out Cro-Mags when they team with Sheer Terror for a show at Highline Ballroom on Dec 30. Tickets are still available.

Bad Brains have a new album on the way, too, due on November 20.

If you didnt make it to Bowery Electric, you can still contribute to help out victims of Hurricane Sandy. Donate to the American Red Cross here. You can also donate to Amnesty International here.

NY Mag

Grizzly Bear are on the cover of the new issue of NY Magazine, which makes two weeks in a row that Brooklyn was prominently featured.

Despite making it into Billboard's Top 10 with their new album, Shields, the band still aren't making a lot of money.

Check out pictures from the show they just played in Chicago with Lower Dens.

And speaking of Brooklyn, get ready for Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas.

"The Artwork of Robert Pollard & Tobin Sprout" is opening in Brooklyn soon. Meanwhile check out our recent Guided by Voices pictures from both Austin and the Deluna Fest in Florida.

Crystal Castles and HEALTH play Roseland on Wednesday (10/3). We're giving away tickets here and on our Facebook too.

Also on Wednesday, M83 plays Hammerstein Ballroom and we're giving away tickets to that on Facebook too. Tickets are also still on sale.

Another Facebook contest: win tickets to see Raveonettes and Melody's Echo Chamber at Webster Hall on Friday (10/5).

The Compact Disc turns 30 years old today. The first CD pressed in America was Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA (though Billy Joe's 52nd Street came out in Japan before that). What was the first CD you bought?

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen, Kenny's Castaways, where he used to play is hosting their final show tonight.

Producer and TV On the Radio member Dave Sitek has launched Federal Prism, "a new record label where Sitek will personally record, mix, produce, and release a series of limited edition 12-inch vinyl picture discs with a uniquely curator-driven perspective. The vinyl will be limited to 500 numbered copies each with a jacket personally hand silkscreened by Sitek."

Federal Prism's first release is "Destroyer" by Telepathe. "The b-side of the vinyl will feature a remix by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor with Alessandro Cortini and Atticus Ross. Sitek adds, "I told Trent I was starting my own label and would love to have him remix something on the first release. I sent him the session and before he actually said 'YES', he sent back this mighty dark space that he, Alessandro and Atticus had built for me! I was shocked and am certain I will have to keep ripping them off for years!"" It's on sale now.

Speaking of Trent Reznor, he says his his band How To Destroy Angels, have "formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP."

Scary: Ryan Adams revealed via Twitter: "Recording a track with my new pal @deadmau5 today. Sounds like BladeRunner starring Don Henley."

More scary: As if it wasn't bad enough that Bruno Mars has been announced as the host of the 10/20 episode of SNL, they're letting him be the musical performer for that episode too!

But here's some good news: Now That's What I Call Music 83 will reportedly be the last in the series.

Womack and Albarn
Bobby and Damon

Bobby Womack, whose first new album in 18 years came out earlier this year, is performing a free show at the Apple's recently expanded and reopened SoHo Store on Tuesday (9/18). Making this a very special event are the album's producers -- Damon Albarn and XL Records exec Richard Russell -- who will be performing with Womack, along with Kwes, TV on the Radio's Jaleel Bunton, and Remi Kabaka. The short performance starts at 7 PM and will also feature a Q&A. It will be the first performance Womack will have played with this band. This announcement comes after Womack cancelled NYC shows a couple times over the summer due to illness.

If you can't make it to the Apple Store, Womack, Albarn and the rest of them will also be performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Friday (9/21). You can check out reheasal footage of Womack with this all-star band from earlier in the week below.
