Archy Marshall, who previously operated under the Zoo Kid moniker, now records as King Krule. He'll release a self titled EP under the name on November 8 via True Panther. That's the album art above. You can check out the EP's last track, "The Noose of Jah City," along with the tracklist below.

King Krule has a few international dates coming up including some CMJ shows, which will also act as his US debut. He's scheduled to play the True Panther showcase at Glasslands on October 19 with Tanlines, Trash Talk, Lemonade, Teengirl Fantasy, and Little Red. He'll also play a Fader Fort CMJ Party on October 21 and a secret True Panther warehouse party on October 22. Stay tuned for more details on those.

Trash Talk also have other CMJ shows including a late one at Cake Shop on Thursday, October 20:

Toronto R&B singer The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) is set to make his US live debut in NYC on September 15 at Skylight One Hanson. The performance is part of Vice's Upfront Extravaganza party in honor of the launch of their new URL Vice.com. The party also includes live and DJ sets by A-Trak, Tanlines, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Nick Zinner (of Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Black Lips. Stay tuned for more details. All we could confirm so far is that this is happening. We can only assume that some sort of RSVP will pop up at some point.

The Weeknd has released two mixtapes this year, House of Balloons and Thursday, and expects to release a third, Echoes of Silence, this fall. Some tracks off both of those mixtapes are below...

Tanlines at the Whitney in 2010 (more by Diana Wong)

As mentioned, Tanlines will headline Warm Up at PS1 on August 27, with other sets from Nguzunguzu, Teengirl Fantasy, Sun Araw, and Physical Therapy. According to Tanlines' facebook, the band "will be playing a new set and this will be the launch of [their] next phase, with the album coming out in the fall."

Tanlines will also DJ at Glasslands on August 26, the day before they play PS1. The Glasslands show is with fellow tropical pop producer Blood Diamonds (not to be confused with Blood Orange or Diamond Rings). Tickets are on sale now.

Blood Diamonds

The Vancouver-based producer Blood Diamonds (aka Mike Tucker) is set to release a new single "Grins" b/w "Move the Stars" this month on Transparent Records. According to Altered Zones, the single will feature a remix by Holy Other, who Blood Diamonds has also remixed. Grab "Grins" and Blood Diamonds' take on Holy Other's "Touch" above. He somehow turned Holy Other's dank swampy track into a sunny day at the beach. Should be interesting to see how Holy Other returns the favor. You can pre-order the single from Plastic in Paper. Also, grab two more older Blood Diamonds tracks and a remix he did for Apache Beat above.

Nguzunguzu

"Nguzunguzu first made its mark in mid-'00s Los Angeles as co-hosts of the legendary Wildness parties near MacArthur Park. Around that time the duo started making tracks and mixes and dropping them online -- frantic, tribal sounds that drew on the convergence of Brazilian baile rhythms, Chicago house and London dance music to create primal, infectious grooves. Gradually over the last three years the production team has moved up the ladder, remixing Ciara, Lazer Sword and Ratatat, among others, releasing a few solid EPs, touring as M.I.A.'s DJ and producing much of her most recent mixtape, "Vicki Leekx."" Nguzunguzu are playing NYC's New Museum on June 23 with Kingdom and Total Freedom (Ashland Mines). The "five hour day-into-night performance" is a collaboration with LA performer and filmmaker Wu Tsang who is in residency at the museum. Wu Tsang's residency is an attempt to showcase different aspects of his new film and performance piece Full Body Quotation. His first film, about the "legendary" parties referenced above, Wildness (currently in post-production), was made in collaboration with Total Freedom and Daniel Pineda of Nguzunguzu. Check out a teaser for the movie below.

The New Museum event is free before 7 PM and $12 after. Nguzunguzu, Kingdom, and Total Freedom also play the official after party hosted by DIS Magazine at Subtonic at 11 PM with MikeQ, Venus X, and $hayne.

Nguzunguzu and Total Freedom both head out on a tour with Gang Gang Dance in July. The tour ends one day before Gang Gang Dance play a Rocks Off Concert Cruise on July 21. The Rocks off show has no openers. Tickets are still on sale for the NYC show which is two days before GGD DJ a PS1 Warm Up event.

Nguzunguzu play a PS1 Warm Up event on August 27 with Sun Araw, who they played with at Echoplex in LA last night (6/16). Tanlines, Teengirl Fantasy, and Physical Therapy are also on the PS1 bill.

Teengirl Fantasy (live) and Physical Therapy (DJ) meanwhile play a Northside Merok Records showcase on June 18 at 285 Kent with Gatekeeper, Blondes and dj Ghe20 Gothik. Teengirl Fantasy also play Sled Island in Canada at the end of the month. They tour with Pictureplane in July.

Tanlines recently made a video for the super catchy "Real Life" off their 2010 Settings EP. According to a post on their facebook page on February 17, Tanlines are "very excited that they're almost done with their record." The record will be their first full length and will presumably be released sometime this year on True Panther.

The full schedule for MoMa's 20l1 'Warm Up' season at PS1 has since been announced. The dance parties happen at the Long Island City location every Saturday from July 2 through September 3 from 2 PM to 9 PM. Admission is $15 and includes access to all exhibitions and 'Warm Up.' Check out the full lineup below.

As discussed, Four Tet and Matthewdavid play 'Warm Up' on July 9. STBRKT (who recently collaborated with Little Dragon) along with FaltyDL and others are also on that bill.

Other days feature Delicate Steve, Odd Future DJ Syd tha Kyd, Black Dice, Juan Maclean, Blood Orange, Solange, Grimes, Tanlines, Sun Araw and many other DJs, producers and and bands. Das Racist, Simian Mobile Disco, Ford & Lopatin, Gang Gang Dance and a few other groups are performing DJ sets.

Matthew Dear @ MHOW in 2008 (more by Bao Nguyen)

As mentioned, Pitchfork will be hosting three days of shows at Brooklyn Bowl during, but-it-looks-like/probably completely unaffiliated with, CMJ this year (Thursday/Friday/Saturday CMJ week). "Brooklyn Bowl is located at 61 Wythe Avenue between N. 11th and N. 12th streets. The festival starts at 2 p.m. each day, with doors opening at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10, both in advance and day of the show." They're calling it the #OFFLINE Festival.

Based on the lineups and start time, it looks like each #OFFLINE day will be about a 12 hour show. No set times yet though, but the full lineups and ticket links are below...

Matthew Dear is one of the biggest names on the list (he plays Saturday), and it will be one of three CMJ week shows for Matthew. His first is Friday night at Webster Hall with Jamaica and Dominique Young Unique. His third is later on Saturday at Public Assembly for the FIXED/Making Time Party with Matthew Dear, Crocodiles, Holy Ghost!, Javelin, Gold Panda, Jamaica, and Kisses.

The FIXED/Making Time party starts after the BrooklynVegan party which is also happening at Public Assembly that same day. Just to be clear:

Tanlines @ the Whitney

"The crowd warmed up - and got to dancing as the room filled up - but the most sonically-fulfilling moment of [Tanline's] set didn't come until the impromptu encore, when Cohen finally removed the mutes (read: t-shirts) from his floor tom and bongos and coaxed some really compelling percussion out of the non-computer side of the Tanlines setup. Overall, the pair pumped out a great set that suffered only slightly from the incongruous scales of the acoustics and the room.

DJ /rupture (Jace Clayton) followed quickly on Tanlines' heels, wasting none of the momentum attained in the last few minutes of their set, when the crowd finally reached room-filling proportions and tipped the balance from texting to dancing. Clayton spun a typically globe-trotting and scholarly set, his selections spanning five continents and at least as many languages. Dressed all in lavender and characteristically stoic behind the decks, he opened with a heavy Cumbia rhythm, and continued through cuts of reggaeton, dubstep and dancehall, also weaving in 90's house, some Akon, and something I'm pretty sure was in Hindi." The eccentrically dressed Cameron Mesirow bounded on stage at the Bowery Ballroom to kick off Saturday night's show (7/10). Mesirow, the woman who parades under the moniker Glasser, proceeded to spastically dance around the stage, mic in hand. Mesirow makes whimsical, dreamlike music with more than a touch of dramatic flair. When she wasn't dancing around stage, she would often crouch down and stare out at the audience intently as she struck odd, animal-like struck poses. With her eyes open wide and her arms out in front of her, she did a pretty solid zombie impression. I sometimes struggle with this theatrical kind of delivery (Zola Jesus springs to mind), but Glasser is better at keeping things light. Her vocals are haunting and delicate without being overly dramatic and showy. Glasser definitely helped get the audience in the mood for a night full of dancing.

Next up on the all True Panter-signed artist bill was a heavy dose of pop-infused techno music from the Brooklyn-based duo Tanlines. Though their beats were for the most part pre-programmed, Eric Emm sang and played the guitar over the loops that Jesse Cohen managed. The sound was decent overall, but the vocals did sometimes get swallowed in the mix as the layers of sound got thicker. As Tanlines' set unfolded, the people immediately in front of the stage began wildly dancing and the crowd stepped back to give them more space. As it turns out, the dancing was only getting started.

It was midnight when Delorean finally took the stage, but the crowd was still enthused. The mood was festive and fiercely energetic. The house's giant disco ball is typically reserved for a single song or two, but it sent shimmering splashes of light over the room for nearly all of Delorean's set.

Keeping in line with the two openers, Delorean also utilized electronic drums to some extent - though this time the drum pads were supplemented by free-standing cymbals to form some sort of a hybrid kit.

The audience began thrashing around during the very first song and it only got more rowdy as Delorean got further into their set. People were jumping up and down in time to the beat, their hands raised up. Half-full cups of beer were thrown into the air, their contents rained down to soak the frenzied crowd. Though the show was sold-out, the crowd was thinner than usual, which was probably for the best - all the more room for dancing.

It's been a long time since I've seen New Yorkers let loose that much at a show - especially one at a midsized venue. The movement spread to the back of the room and even extended to the balcony where people had abandoned the comfort of their chairs.

Back on stage, the members of Delorean were dancing, too - especially the keyboard player who was bouncing around so much that it's a wonder that he managed to hit the right notes. The infectious beats complimented their melodic but largely indecipherable vocals to create a trance-like state both in the crowd and on stage. The Barcelona-based group powered through their songs without stopping much to talk, as if they were worried about breaking their momentum.

Delorean played a relatively short set with just a single song for the encore, but they definitely went out on a high note.

Exactly one week earlier, Delorean and Glasser shared a bill at PS1. Four days after that Delorean played to a packed crowd in Stuy Town. Delorean's next NYC show is this year's final Pool Party (where they play along with two "secret special guests").

Tanlines' next show is August 27th at the Whitney.

As mentioned previously, Montreal dance-pop band Think About Life play Mercury Lounge tonight, two days after playing an early set at the WBAR-B-Q on Sunday. Tickets are still on sale for that. It's a late show. The early show at the same venue features Casiotone For The Painfully Alone.

Opening the late show are Chicago's Light Pollution, who play a kind of synthy post-rock and whose debut LP, Apparitions, comes out June 8th on Carpark Records. That album's first single, "Good Feelings," a mid-tempo jam with appegiated synths under cymbal crashes and mountain-top vocals, is above. Its video is below.

Light Pollution have a few more shows this week too. They play Glasslands on Friday with electronica-pop bands of varying degrees: Keepaway, Memoryhouse, Tanlines and Psychobuildings. Saturday Light Pollution was scheduled to play at the still-closed Market Hotel - according to the band's Myspace, that show has been moved to Under 100, the sometimes-open venue that hosted Erykah Badu about a month ago.

Tanlines recently received a video for their song "Reinfo" from a fan, in the form of a video love letter/tour of the East Village. The band writes: "This guy who does a blog called Pitchfork Reviews Reviews randomly emailed us this video that he made for a girl named Anna. We like it, so now it's our official video!"

"Hello, and welcome to Portland, Oregon," quipped James Mercer, as he and Danger Mouse greeted the freezing crowd at Mog Day Party on the final day of SXSW. A 40-degree drop in temperature from Friday caused flip-flops and t-shirts to be replaced by hoodies, coats and gloves. Broken Bells were just one of several excellent bands that filled the indoor and outdoor venues of the Mohawk.

I finally made it downtown before 2pm by taking the rather efficient Metro Capitol bus. Traffic along I-35 into downtown took almost an hour the day before from just 10 minutes north. Arriving a little after noon Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers were already on inside. Ray was squeezing the hell out of that squeezbox and her raspy, scowling voice was alarming so early in the day. It certainly set a tone. And Free Energy complete with free cassettes started things outside with their unabashed good times garage rock.

Back inside The Dum Dum Girls were up next with more of the same hazy lo-fi pop that drummer Frankie Rose was laying down the night before on the same stage with her band. I skipped back outside for Demolished Thoughts though Andrew WK (an advertised member along with Thurston Moore and J Mascis) was absent and the bassist for Fucked Up was filling in. It was thrashing punk stuff with silly songs like the 45-second "I Hate Kids" (those were the lyrics) followed by the 45-second "I Hate Sports" (some videos below).

Then it was back inside for a little dance - hip hop with Rye Rye and then back outside for Broken Bells - who kept busy at the festival. For a band only a couple months old they were tight and the songs sounded great. Inside again for Freelance Whales and then back outside for The Antlers, back inside for Real Estate and finally back outside for the Black Keys who straight up killed. Mercer and Danger Mouse (who produced the Keys' Attack & Release) and members of the Antlers were sidestage rocking out. The crowd was hanging over rails and pushing in toward the stage. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney had everyone riveted and rocking. Certainly the most polished performance of the day, perhaps the festival.

Unexpectedly, as I ventured back to the convention center, I stumbled upon Fanfarlo about to perform in Brush Square with free drinks (Shiner Bock!) and heaters to keep the tent warm. Fantastic live show. "If we knew there were going to be so many photographers, we'd have done better," quipped multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas about the the band's appearance.

For the evening it was all about finishing strong. I made my way to the Victorian Room at the Driskill for Miss Li who was great and her band was stellar, over to St. David's Bethel Hall to see some Texas bands as part of the Western Vinyl Showcase, including an unimpressive Matthew and the Arrogant Sea. I decided to go all out and dashed over to Barbarella for the excellent Best Coast who also played a couple of new songs that sounded really good. Back to St. David's for the ambient Sleep Whale (formerly MOM) from Denton, TX down to Paradise for crazy afro-beat inflected dance music courtesy of New York's Tanlines (it was a full-on dance party.) Finally, it was back over to St. David's for the beautiful, classical-leaning experimental band Balmorhea.

As anyone following along on @bvSXSW knows, after some serious transportation issues, Andrew Frisicano eventually made his way down to Monterrey, Mexico from Austin, TX (counting waiting for the bus to show up, it took him something like 18 hours which was 4 hours shorter than it took Ryan Muir) in time for a bit of the 2nd night and all of the third day (aka today, 3/22). Here is some of his story so far...

"You Will Remember Tonight" was the song that stuck out in Andrew WK's headlining set at MtyMx Festival last night in Monterrey, Mexico. It was the second night of the fest, and the only set I saw because of a lengthy, complicated bus trip that started much earlier in the day.

There were a lot of questions coming down to Mexico: transportation, accommodations and food were mostly left in the hands of the festival, and at MtyMx now (5pm Monterrey time), most of those continue to be issues, sadly distracting from the bands who did make it. For some bands and showgoers the trip took 20+ hours of waiting and riding on buses, but if one thing has been consistent, it has been that no two MtyMx trips have been the same.

Due to spotty bus service from Austin, shaken confidence in the festival and scheduling issues, a number of the bands on the bill have canceled or been unable to make it down. Those bands (editor's note: which Todd P sarcastically addresses in a video below) include Washed Out, Small Black, Tanlines, No Age, Lucky Dragons, Anamanaguchi, Pocahaunted, Beach Fossils, MNDR, Sun Araw, Total Abuse, Talk Normal, The Wave Pictures, Fucked Up, The Sandwitches and Liturgy. On the festival's last day, arranging transportation back to Austin or elsewhere has been an overriding theme.

Tanlines...

Tanlines, Lemonade and Janka Nabay played a co-release party at Monster Island on Friday, March 5th for each of their three EPs. Tanlines' Settings is out March 9th (today) on True Panther Sounds/Matador Records, as are Lemonade's Pure Moods and Janka's Bubu King EPs. Also at the show were Pictureplane and Blondes.

The show took place right before Pictureplane played two more NYC shows, but with Washed Out and Small Black (the beginning of the three bands' tour together).

Tanlines play NYC again this Friday (3/12) at Eyebeam's Mixer: Olympiad (540 W 21st St) with Maluca and many many visual artists ("Artists, designers, musicians, engineers, and hackers alike will stage events that evoke the passion, the drive, the danger, and the majesty of competitive sport and mass spectacle. Join one of the five competing nations, and race for Olympic glory!") Tickets are on sale.

Lemonade is on tour with MNDR and These Are Powers, and plays Mercury Lounge on march 29th with Delorean and Brahms (tickets are on sale).

Most of the band mentioned here are heading to SXSW. Delorean, Lemonade, and Tanlines all play the True Panther showcase Todd P is hosting at Cheer Up Charlie's on March 18th. Tour dates for all of the above bands and more pictures are below...

Micachu & The Shapes are touring with Spoon and Deerhunter this April. Before that, they'll be doing a Tuesday, March 30th show at NYC's (Le) Poisson Rouge with Tanlines. Tickets are on sale.

In addition to being at SXSW and MtyMx, Tanlines is playing a release party for its Settings EP (out March 9th on True Panther Sounds) on March 5th at Monster Island Basement. Also on the bill are Lemonade, Janka Nabay and Blondes. (It's not just a release party for Tanlines, you can get entry and 3 new 12"s from Tanlines, Lemonade and Janka Nabay for $25.)

Raisa Khan of Micachu & The Shapes sat in on keys and vocals with her friends UK band Laurel Collective at Hindenburg Mile High Club in London on Saturday, February 6th. The show was part of the band's monthly residency at the spot. Laurel Collective's debut album (actually a mini-album), Feel Good Hits Of A Nuclear Winter, came out in 2008 on Domino. Their more recent material (including a free cover of Micachu's "Golden Phone") is available online. They live up to the collective part of their name with a youthful group feel similar to Los Campesinos or Nana Grizol. Laurel Collective will be at SXSW this year for shows throughout the festival. Everything in Casablancas's long, hard year as a soloist has carried a steep learning curve, from touring by himself to getting the album into stores. For example, RCA is co-releasing his solo album, yet, he says, "they're not the label I signed with. The people change all the time. They're nice, they're cool, but honestly they don't do shit." So he did most of the work through Cult Records, the label he started for Phrazes and financed himself, and it didn't turn out much better. "You have all these dreams. I still like the plan, but it was executed terribly."

And then there's the Strokes. Theoretically, they are putting out a fourth album. "It's coming!" he says. [NY Mag]

"Ok, so in talking about the show with some old Strokes fan friends, people have express surprise at the fact that I enjoyed the show so much because...well, it's just not the same without all the other Strokes. To that point I say this: No, it's not The Strokes, but in my opinion, Julian is pretty much one of the best things about the band in the first place, so going to see a Julian Casablancas show is kinda like a Strokes show, but without all the other distractions.

That said, Julian's music is much different than the regular Strokes fare. I like to think his solo work is more pop-based, and a little bit more carefree than Strokes songs. I also think his lyrics are more playful, the song structure more complicated and interesting, and the imagery more vivid. Perhaps that's more of a reflection of his maturation as a songwriter than anything else, but any way you slice it, the solo stuff is great and you should be so lucky to see him perform it live.

The show last night wasn't as elaborate as the ones he did in his LA residency (you know, the one that he felt were a fiasco) which included set pieces, costume changes, and an intermission, but it was polished, smooth, and successful. He truly seemed like he was having fun, and the crowd was enjoying it.

He seemed relaxed and at ease with himself and the songs -- a very different energy than the one I remember when he plays with The Strokes. At Strokes shows, so much of the show is propelled by each of the band member's energy bouncing off and pushing one another forward. At a Julian Casablancas show it seems much more like Julian is puttering along, guiding his backup band, and the pace of the show with the slow and steady push of his own internal performance propeller." DOWNLOAD: Salem - Frost (MP3)

"If we wanted to, we could go on about how this is a perfectly timed reaction to all the beach jams released this summer, but we know it's not like that. No, it's just Salem pumping out another ultra-creepy windswept song, no matter what the temperature, only this time they've added some complexity to the drum programming, unscrewed the vocals and turned the whole thing into a battle between lush misery and the kind of marching band drum machine claps we expect from Mannie Fresh. We're more or less watching this band go from good to really awesome, and that's a good situation to be in. "Frost" is the a-side from Salem's 7-inch release with Audraglint." [Fader]

As far as we can tell, Salem only has a handful of releases to their name. Recently they released a single for the track "Frost/Legend" on Audraglint. The video for the "Legend" is below; "Frost" and more are streaming on their MySpace. Salem split a 7" with Tanlines as the December pick for the Fader/SoCo single series. That's streaming.

"Leichtung moved from San Francisco four years ago to study music technology at NYU's Steinhardt School. While perfecting his scruffy college boy look - think black-framed glasses, beat-up Converse sneakers, lots of band t-shirts and a permanent five o'clock shadow - Leichtung also found himself getting sucked into the DIY scene. He started out interning for Todd P, but now lives and works at the Market Hotel along with four friends and a revolving door of artists who rent out storage and rehearsal space for $394 a month. Neon Indian @ Mercury Lounge (more by Erez Avissar)

Neon Indian finished their three-night NYC run with a show at Brooklyn Bowl last night (12/17). Toro y Moi didn't open that show like he did at the two previous gigs which were both at Mercury Lounge, but he will play Brooklyn Bowl on March 26th when he opens for The Ruby Suns. Tickets are now on sale...

"[At Brooklyn Bowl, the] electronic musician known also known for his recordings under the name VEGA, blasted off into the lo-fi synthy stratosphere along with his three compadres, including what looked like a 17 year-old D&D player (cape included) and a cute girl in hot shorts that acted as band cheerleader. Playing tracks exclusively from their excellent debut LP Psychic Chasms while doctored images from teen-angst film The Doom Generation played behind them, Neon Indian had fun and looked good doing it. Their brand of dance music has a whimsical, nostalgic feel to it without sounding forced." [NY Press]

And the Market Hotel show is actually one of two appearances Neon Indian band members are making in Brooklyn tonight. Neon Indian (aka drummer Jason Faries) is also listed as a DJ at the new Germs party at Europa. More details on both shows below...
