When they hit it big in the late '90s with Chemical Brothers, Air and Fatboy Slim band, Astralwerks became one of the biggest indie labels in the country. The compilation features previously unreleased or rare tracks from Hot Chip, Air, Diamond Rings, Kraftwerk, Kings of Convenience, Doves and others plus previously released tracks by The Chemical Brothers, The Beta Band, Fatboy Slim, Cassius, Basement Jaxx, Royksopp, a Four Tet remix of Sia and more. Tanlines at Webster Hall - 11/29/12 (via Olivia Overall)

NYC synth pop band Tanlines (who made Kurt Braunohler's year-end list headlined their largest hometown show yet on November 29 at Webster Hall with Supreme Cuts (who made FACT's year-end list) and Jim E-Stack. They also just appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night (12/6) to perform "All of Me" off of their 2012 LP, Mixed Emotions. You can check out a video of that performance below.

by Klaus Kinski and Kurt Braunohler

This installment of Klaus Kinski Bugging Funny People He Adores For Their Top 10 Favorite Things of 2012 brings us face to face with the great comedic tornado that is Kurt Braunohler. Kurt entered a cherished spot in my heart chambers many many years ago when I first saw him performing with Kristen Schall somewhere. Since then I've seen him do stand-up and sketch type stuff alone or with Kristen no less than 70 million times and he has never, ever, never ever not brought his A-Game to the stage (a favorite bit, btw). His resume is extensive. Kurt has been seen (or heard) on TV on Bob's Burgers (FOX), Chelsea Lately, Delocated (Adult Swim), John Oliver's NY Stand Up Show, The Heart She Holler (Adult Swim), Comedy Central Presents, Jon Benjamin Has a Van (Comedy Central), Assy McGee (Adult Swim), Human Giant (MTV) and the anti-game show he hosts, BUNK! on IFC. He can also be heard on the radio on This American Life.
As far as stages, Kurt has performed at the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival, Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and Chicago, New York Comedy Festival (named a "Comic to Watch"), SXSW, Bonaroo, All Tomorrow's Parties, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (IF.Comedy Award nominee), Melbourne Comedy Festival (Barry Award Winner), the HBO Vegas Comedy Festival, the Chicago Improv Festival ("Improv Ensemble of the Year" Award Winner) and he once performed at Radio City Music Hall, but only because his comedy partner (Schall) is pretty famous. And who can forget the awesome web series Penelope: Princess of Pets? Or the fact that he hosted Hot Tub with Kristen Schaal for 7 years? Do you like wunderkinds? Then you will LOVE KURT!
Kurt's list of favorite albums from this year, brought to life with my htmling and youtube embeddings, as well as a list of upcoming Kurt tour dates (no NYC), are yours to enjoy. BELOW.

Tanlines at House of Vans in June (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)

Tanlines and fellow tropical pop synthesist Blood Diamonds (who have shared a bill in the past) have scheduled a last minute performance happening in NYC on Friday (10/19) at Le Bain with Making Time resident DJs Dave P and Sammy Slice. The show is presented by Urban Outfitters and takes place during CMJ (though it isn't an official CMJ show) and is free with RSVP. The show flier is below.
Tanlines will also headline their largest hometown show yet at Webster Hall on November 29. No openers have been announced yet. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (10/19) at noon. All Tanlines dates (including a stop at FFF Fest in Austin) are listed below.
Speaking of Dave P and Le Bain, Dave is also one of the party promoter/DJ duo FIXED with JDH. They're celebrating their eighth anniversary at Le Bain on October 26. That show is totally free to the public and the flier is below.
Videos/streams from Tanlines and Blood Diamonds, both show fliers, and a list of all dates below.

Yeasayer at Jones Beach in 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

You may remember that back in late 2009, the leak of Yeasayer's Odd Blood album surfaced about two months before its release, and now Yeasayer have "received message" that their new record, Fragrant World (due out 8/21 via Secretly Canadian), is on the verge of surfacing as well. Because of this, the band have decided to stream the album themselves... if you want to call it that. They've hidden "track visualizers" (created by Yoshi Sodeoka) for each song on the album around the internet, and it's your job to find them in scavenger hunt fashion. They're calling the scavenger hunt "PREEMPTIVE SELF-COMMISSIONED YEASAYER VORSTELLUNG or TRACK VISUALIZER" or PSCYVOTV for short. Clues on how to find the songs will be revealed at the Yeasayer twitter and the Secretly Canadian twitter. Seems like a lot of work to have cranked out quickly because you heard the album was going to leak.
You've already heard/seen "Henrietta" and "Longevity" (both of which are below), and as of this post "Blue Paper," "No Bones," "Reagan's Skeleton," and "Damaged Goods" have been found, and are also below. The songs will be online until Friday (8/3) at 8 PM EST, when they will be removed. Secretly Canadian is also running a contest for 4 winners who can find all 11 songs to win a deluxe bundle of Fragrant World and 4 more winners for the regular edition.
As mentioned, Yeasayer are currently on tour and will hit MHOW on August 15 (tickets on sale Friday [8/3] at noon) with Daedelus and the much larger Central Park Summerstage on September 12 with Daedelus and Tanlines (not Daughn Gibson, like we initially said). Tickets for that show are still available.
Videos and Yeasayer's complete letter below...

After teasing folks with a few names here and there -- like Run DMC most recently -- Austin's annual Fun Fun Fun Fest (Nov 2 - 4) has revealed it's full line-up, including Public Image Ltd, De La Soul, Superchunk, Santigold, Refused, X peforming Los Angeles, and lots, lots more. 3-day passes go on sale at 10AM CST.
Full FFF Fest lineup is below.
King Khan at The Bell House, Nov. 2011 (more by Keith Marlowe)

The full House of Vans 2012 free show schedule is up. The Greenpoint/Williamsburg space has already housed The Rapture and Tanlines this year, and we knew about the 7/12 show with H20, 7 Seconds and Tournament, but here's the rest of the summer's line-up, brought to you by the folks at FYF and the sneaker people:
July 12: H20, 7 Seconds, TournamentThe parties are free with RSVP (which hasn't been posted yet).
July 26: King Khan & The Shrines, Nicky Da B, The Everymen
Aug 2: Washed Out, Chairlift, Lemonade
Aug 16: Cursive, Titus Andronicus, Love As Laughter, Joyce Maynor
Aug 29: Turbonegro, Baroness, Doomriders, Nightbirds
One thing you notice not on this list is Quicksand which was one of the big rumors of this year's VANS schedule. That either means that Quicksand will play somewhere else, or like the upcoming free Dum Dum Girls/Widowspeak show, it won't be part of this series of "House Parties."
The July 26 show is one of many local dates from NJ's Everymen who are also playing Pianos this Friday, July 6 as part of the CBGB Festival. (Advance tickets are on sale.) After the House of Vans show, the band will go on a short East Coast tour while putting the finishing touches on their new album New Jersey Hardcore which will come out in October on Killing Horse Records. All Everymen dates are below.
The Rapture/the scene House of Vans 6/20/2012

Let the games begin. House of Vans is officially open to the public after last night's scorching show featuring The Rapture, Tanlines and DJ Dave P. The line, which headed all the way to N12th along Kent, started moving at 8PM and though some left out of frustration, it seemed easier to enter as the night progressed.
House of Vans hasn't changed much (read: at all) since last year's shows. Sectioned off drinking areas from the show (police-style barricades). Plenty of free liquids of the alcoholic/non-alcoholic type to refresh the crowd. Music fans intermingling with those out for the free booze. Aside from the zillion degree temperature, last night's show was what you've come to expect from the House of Vans space.
Following a few tracks from Dave P (who entertained the crowd intermittently all night), Tanlines opened the big stage, playing their dancey-indie to a hot and sweaty room. While the band may have solid melodies laid to tape, they are far from a live force. I've seen my share of bands play to backing tracks and with an electronic presence, but the key thing missing was the understanding of the differences between performance and a live show. Limited crowd interaction and not the most interesting band to watch by any stretch of the imagination.
It has been many years since I last caught The Rapture (opening for Daft Punk out on Coney Island) and I remembered them to have a bit more Contortions mixed in with their Chic (live anyway). This was not the case but no matter, The Rapture ripped a solid and energetic set for the packed crowd. The sound in House of Vans is far from forgiving but it the crowd went wild to their steady danceable funk groove despite the extreme humidity and only a single helicopter-sized fan to cool them off. Booties did shake.
The next House of Vans event goes down on July 12th and will feature H2O, 7 Seconds with more TBA. RSVP info is forthcoming. Lots more pictures from House of Vans, including The Rapture's set list, are below.

In related news, Kindness (aka Adam Bainbridge), who, like Blood Orange, records for Chris Taylor's (of Grizzly Bear/CANT) Terrible Records, was also just in Austin for SXSW where he shared a bill with Blood Orange at a Windish party. Kindess also played a Gorilla vs Bear/Yours Truly party and the NME showcase, among others. Dummy Mag wrote about the GvsB/YT show:
Kindess slinked on stage like the consummate crooner: smooth, self-assured and safe in the knowledge his charm would woo the crowd. He was right, too. I was a little too tired to surrender to it entirely but there's no doubting the calibre of Kindess. Top of the pops.Check out some videos of Kindness at SXSW below.
Speaking of Gorilla vs Bear and Florence & the Machine, GvsB just premiered a Clams Casino remix of Florence's "Never Let Me Go." Stream that below.
