Geoff Rickly w/ UN at Saint Vitus in August (more by Greg Cristman)
Geoff Rickly

Geoff Rickly's had a busy year with a new United Nations album and two singles with his band No Devotion. He's already set to kick off next year in style with a one-off solo show in Atlantic City on January 3, the first Saturday of 2015, at the Dante Hall Theater of The Arts. Opening that show is I Am the Avalanche/Movielife singer Vinnie Caruana and Back and Forth singer Matty Carlock. Tickets are on sale now, and there's a complimentary afterparty for the 21+ at The Boneyard. Show flyer below.

Vinnie Caruana has a few other solo appearances in the area, including The Studio at Webster Hall with John Nolan on 12/29 (tickets), and opening the NYC stop of Motion City Soundtrack's Commit This to Memory tour along with the ex-Passion Pit power poppers Team Spirit. He's also on the Boston and Silver Spring stops and you can still get tickets to all three.

A few days before the Webster show his band I Am the Avalanche plays a previously discussed NYC one-off at MHOW on Friday, December 26. Since we last spoke, it's been announced that IATA will be joined by the great newer Long Island punk band Iron Chic and The Gaslight Anthem's pals The Scandals. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Iron Chic also have a new split 7" with Low Culture (mems The Marked Men) on Dead Broke (Mike from Iron Chic's label) and Dirt Cult (Chris from Low Culture's label). Check out a stream of each band from that split (via Noisey) below...

Zola Jesus at Webster Hall last night (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Zola

Zola Jesus concluded the US leg of her tour at Webster Hall last night (10/19), and she's got another (much smaller) NYC show happening later this week. She'll perform live at 'Urban Outfitters Afterfest presents MAKING TIME' at Le Bain at The Standard on Friday (10/24). In addition to her set, DJ Dodger Stadium, Dave P and Sammy Slice will all DJ. The show goes from 10 PM to 4 AM and is free with RSVP.

That's the first of two shows that DJ Dodger Stadium (the duo of Jerome LOL and Samo Sound Boy) have in NYC this week. The other is the Windish CMJ showcase on Saturday (10/25) at Brooklyn Bwol with Blue Hawaii, Team Spirit, Adult Jazz, Aurora and Casual Sex. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Team Spirit / Puppet Team Spirit
IMAGEIMAGE

Team Spirit, the band fronted by former Passion Pit member Ayad Al Adhamy, are finally coming out with their debut album, titled Killing Time, which will be out September 30 via Vice/WB. The first single "Surrender" is a big riff rocker with a very catchy chorus. Taking cues from some of the lyrics, the music video (directed by Alex Russek) finds a puppet version of the band looking for a hit the easy way -- aka selling your soul to The Devil. You can watch that, and stream "Teenage Heart" from the album, below.

If you're going to Riot Fest Chicago this weekend, look for Team Spirit on Sunday (9/14). They'll also be playing a few East Coast shows in October, including Baby's All Right on 10/1 with Sunflower Bean.
Tickets are on sale now. Other dates on the trek are will Canadian band Alvvays. All dates are listed below.

Speaking of, it was recently revealed that in addition to the 9 previously-announced bands playing classic albums at Riot Fest, Cheap Trick (whose song "Surrender" is not the Team Spirit song in this post) are performing Heaven Tonight.

List of Team Spirit dates, with the video and stream, below...

Team Spirit @ BV SXSW 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Team Spirit

More upcoming shows have been announced for Brooklyn Night Bazaar. For those looking for a cheap Valentine's Day (2/14) date option BKNB has headliners Team Spirit, who you may remember last V-day released the Love is for Suckers EP. The night also features The Liza Colby Sound, Hard Nips, Blue & Gold, Lowell, and DJ Pegasus Warning. This was the night that Bernie Worrell was originally supposed to play. Then on February 28, it's a pop/dance line-up with Body Language, Joywave, Echo Friendly, and Jamaican Queens.

And a bit further out, on March 21 Brooklyn Night Bazaar has 8-bit champions Anamanaguchi with the rest of the line-up TBA.

Delorean / Savages
Delorean
Savages

We kicked off our free BrooklynVegan SXSW day parties yesterday (3/13) in Austin at the Main & The Jr (aka the old Emo's location, aka 603 Red River St) with sets from Delorean, Robyn Hitchock, Savages, Camper Van Beethoven, Caveman, Braids, Maserati, Caitlin Rose, Anamanaguchi, Indians, Marnie Stern, Team Spirit, Torres, and Deep Sea Diver. Pictures from the party are in this post, and more are on the way soon.

The biggest surprise for me personally was Torres (aka Mackenzie Scott), whose self titled debut is great, but she really takes it to another level live. Her band is super tight, loud, and confident (her guitarist has some rock star moves) and Mackenzie has some serious pipes that she doesn't even fully reveal on the album. It was a much heavier show than I expected, and if you can catch her at one of her other upcoming SXSW shows, highly recommended.

Torres was followed by other great sets on the outdoor stage (Glasslands Stage), like the noisy math rock of Marnie Stern (who played a lot of her great new album), the danceable video game punk of Anamanaguchi, and a set from post-rockers Maserati, who along with Caveman, cooled things down for a bit. But that cooling down didn't last long, because once Savages took the stage, they were possibly even more intense than CMJ. They played some new stuff that they didn't have back then, and once that album finally drops, I've got pretty high hopes for it. Finally, Delorean wrapped up the outdoor stage with a dancey set. It was nice to end the day with some familiar tunes like "Real Love." Then Maserati came out and joined Delorean for a cover over Gary Numan's "Cars." Not really.

Meanwhile, indoors Deep Sea Diver kicked things off around the same time as Torres outside and they were followed by the fun-rock of Team Spirit, Copenhagen's Indians (who were a 3-piece and were better that way than when I saw him solo), a rousing country set from Caitlin Rose, the new electronic sound of Braids (which we also heard at CMJ), and the show ended with sets from two musical veterans: Camper Van Beethoven and Robyn Hitchcock. Robyn was great and he is especially funny on stage with his in-between song banter. He referred to the overheard sounds of Delorean from the other room as the sounds of devils, and "if they had been heard 200 years earlier, marches of men would have been sent to destroy these fiends," (or something like that).

In addition to the music, Onkyo was there, sampling their new headphones which hit stores next month. mophie, maker of invaluable iPhone chargers, were giving away discount cards good at their pop-up shop which was set up right across the street on Red River. We were also serving complimentary Jameson, and Zico coconut water, and free vegan queso and chips from Food For Lovers. We also had BrooklynVegan t-shirts for the first 50 people in the door, thanks to American Apparel. Also thanks to our other sponsors, Korg, Vox, Blackstar, Creative Recreation, Signazon, WILLCALL, Mirrored Media, and Redigi.

Our day parties continue today (3/14) with sets from Cloud Nothings, Parenthetical Girls, Death, METZ, Milk Music, Beach Fossils, Widowspeak, and more.

Team Spirit

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day as you may know. Some folks really enjoy this chance to finally say I love you to that special someone in your life. Others take a more cynical view, echoing the sentiments of Team Spirit's new EP, Love Is For Suckers, which will consists of five garagey covers of classic love songs, mostly '60s pop, but also Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." The EP will be a free download on Valentine's Day but you can stream the whole thing right now, below.

Meanwhile, Team Spirit, the band fronted by former Passion Pit member Ayad Al Adhamy, are readying thier first official release for VICE/Warner Bros. It's a five song EP, out April 9, and you can stream "MRDR It's OK" from it below and check out the very NSFW animated video for "Fuck the Beach."

Team Spirit have a few tour dates coming up, including a stint opening for The Joy Formidable (though not in NYC). All tour dates are listed below.

Darlings

Brooklyn's Darlings are self-releasing their new album, Perfect Trip a couple weeks (January 29) which is loaded with catchy, sneary guitar pop. We've got the premeire of catchy, snotty track "Sit on It!" right here in this post and you can stream it below. I think the Fonz would approve.

The band have a few local shows lined up. Friday night (1/18) they play 285 Kent with Total Slacker, Team Spirit and The Indecents, plus TEEN on DJ duty. $8 at the door and more info is here. Then on February 8 at Death by Audio, Darlings are throwing a Perfect Trip release party with other bands TBA. And on March 8 they'll play Shea Stadium with Permanent Collection, Field Mouse and Honey Drum.

A list of all upcoming dates, album art, and song stream are below.

Braids at ATP NYC 2012 (more by Luiz Ruiz)
Braids

Montreal's Braids were just in NYC for ATP and while they were in the area, the closest club date they played was at Hoboken's Maxwell's a few days before ATP. Now they'll be returning to NYC during CMJ for a free, and far more intimate than ATP, show at Pianos on October 17 for the Tell All Your Friends day party. The show starts at noon and Braids are on at 6 PM. Other bands playing including Maus Haus, Blackbird Blackbird, Team Spirit, Solid Gold, Filligar, Triple Hex, Zulu Pearls, and still more. You can see the full list of artists and more details in the flier below. This show is the only announced date for Braids at the moment.

UPDATE: Braids also play a larger CMJ show at Bowery Ballroom on October 20 with Wild Nothing (more of their dates HERE and HERE), Weekend, and Forma. Tickets to that show go on sale Wednesday (10/10) at noon.

In related news, Raphaelle of Braids' other band, Blue Hawaii will be playing some CMJ shows too, including the Sam Mickens CMJ party at Bowery Electric on October 18 with Jack Ladder & the Dreamlanders, TOPS, and ZZZ's. It doesn't look like Sam Mickens is actually playing the show (he's been doing some booking for the venue lately), but you'll have a few chances to catch him playing in NYC this month and next.

After that show, Blue Hawaii will play the M for Montreal showcase at Arlene's Grocery on October 19 with Doldrums, Mozart's Sister, Absolutely Free, Royal Canoe, Plaster, Ariane Mofatt, and TOPS, and the POP Montreal day party at Cameo on October 20 with Goose Hut, Mozart's Sister, Solar Year, Valleys, C T Z N S H P.

Blue Hawaii also play the Arbutus Records Showcase at Death by Audio on October 20 with Doldrums, TOPS, Majical Cloudz, and Eola. As you may know, Arbutus is the label that Grimes was on before signing to 4AD. All the bands playing that DbA show are featured on a mix Arbutus made for CMJ which we're premiering in this post. Check it out, along with its tracklist, below.

As mentioned, Blue Hawaii will open for her in NYC at Bowery Ballroom on October 27 with Myths. Majical Cloudz, who are also on the Arbutus showcase and featured on Grimes' album, will open her show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (10/28) with Elite Gymnastics. All of Grimes' upcoming NYC shows are sold out.

The Braids flier, Arbutus CMJ mix, a song stream, and a list of all Blue Hawaii dates are below.

Andrew WK at Webster Hall, April 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Andrew WK

As part of David Blaine's Ultrabook Experience event, "Electrified," Andrew W.K. will perform a unique keyboard solo using a tesla coil powered instrument in which David Blaine will be imprisoned as 1,000,000 volts of party music surge through his body. Presented by Intel, "Electrified" will find the master magician this weekend standing on a 20-foot-high platform at Hudson River Park Pier 54 in New York, surrounded by seven towering metallic orbs - or tesla coils - that will stream 1 million volts of electricity around him for 3 days and 3 nights. The sounds W.K. creates with this groundbreaking new musical instrument will send electric currents through Blaine's entire body!
The "Electrified" event will go down  10/5 - 10/8 but you can look for Andrew WK to play his solo on Sunday 10/7 at 7:30PM at 13th St and 11th Ave. Alternatively, check it out on youtube who will streaming the entire event.

UPDATE: There's an RSVP

Besides that "electrifying" performance (I'll be here all week!), Andrew WK will be hosting/DJing The Syndicate's annual pre-CMJ Conflict Of Interest show on 10/15 at Rebel NYC (251 West 30th Street, New York) alongside performances from Savoir Adore, Team Spirit, Pacific Air and The Hounds Below. Doors are at 7PM and the show is free with RSVP.

Archers of Loaf / Crocodiles / the scene at 4Knots 2012
Archers of Loaf
Crocodiles
Crocodiles

Even though the fire that broke out on the deck at the South Street Seaport Mall was certainly the most memorable act of the day, the Village Voice 4Knots Festival was a fine time at South Street Seaport, loaded with good performances amid the smoke and oppressive humidity. There was a big crowd for this second year of the fest, much bigger than last year, and though there wasn't a headliner the size of, say, Steve Malkmus or M.I.A. or Spoon (like they had at Siren in years past), that seemed by design in these post-Drake years. I like every band that played the main stage.

Well, I don't know anything about the first two bands who played the main stage -- The Smiling Lies and Fast Years -- who played before I got there at 1PM and seemed to be on by contractual obligation. Nick Waterhouse made a good, friendly primer for the day with his vintage, baritone sax-fueled '60s soul and R&B, looking dapper in a white oxford shirt that had to have been hot on stage. I prefer him in a tiny sweaty club to a big outdoor fest (I can say that about most bands) but he had the sweaty part down.

Bleached were up next and while we've yet to get an album from these girls, the crowd seemed to know most of their set of hook-laden poppy, punky, curled-lip songs. Hospitality were up next -- almost exactly a year ago they played to about 60 people at the Fulton Stall Market across the street from the Seaport, and they've come a long way since. Most of the crowd was bobbing along to much of their Merge debut... at least till the fire cut their set short.

After the smoke cleared it was Crocodiles whose new album Endless Flowers finds them branching out of strict JAMC love into brighter, poppier corners. They were probably the most animated band of the day with Brandon Welchez definitely playing up the rock frontman gig to the hilt. Crocodiles also inspired the only crowd surfing I saw on Saturday (but I might have missed some).

Speaking of animated, The Drums were up next. Once known for their Bring It On as an indie rock band, tambourine-tossing fabulousness, they are now a real live rock band with little in the way of backing tracks. While I think their most recent album was pretty good, and they sounded tight, they are a little on the subdued side live these days, or at least have been the last two times I've seen them. I think I liked them better live when they mostly pretended to play their instruments.

I was wondering if a lot of the crowd might leave after The Drums' set but, nope, everyone stuck around for recently-reformed '90s indie rock royalty Archers of Loaf. I'll admit I was never the biggest fan -- that was my college roommate, who seemed to get mail-order daily from TeenBeet, Merge and Simple Machines while I scoured import racks for Ride and Blur EPs -- but I certainly absorbed a lot through osmosis and the hit-filled set ("Web in Front," "Wrong," "Plumb") was even recognizable to this casual Archers listener. My friend Chris, a giant Archers fan, dubbed their performance "awesome."

Meanwhile on the Skipper's stage, we got mischievous Montreal band Doldrums, the twangy retro rock of Devin, punk-ish rockers Team Spirit (featuring Ayad of Passion Pit) and Delicate Steve whose set was also cut short due to the fire. And the afterparty went down in Beekman Beer Garden where things got wild during Black Lips' set.

More pictures from 4Knots are below...

The Death Set at Williamsburg Waterfront, 2010 (more by Leia Jospe)
Death Set

While not on a full tour, The Death Set are playing select dates this summer, including a visit to the NXNE in Toronto and Osheaga in Montreal as well as two NYC shows: XPO 929 on June 28 with Team Spirit, Bosco Delrey and Eula, and Bowery Ballroom on July 31 with Ninjasonik and Hussle Club. Tickets to the XPO show are already on sale, and Bowery tickets go on sale Friday (6/8) at noon. All listed Death Set tour dates are at the bottom of this post.

The band recently released a new video for their song "Is it the End Again?" which is the "ballad" from last year's Michel Poiccard LP. It's a little NSFW, and you can watch it below.

Haim at Glasslands - 5/5/12
Haim

Hotly tipped LA trio Haim played a sold out show at Glasslands last month before heading over to the UK for a tour. The Brooklyn show was with Team Spirit (Ayad of Passion Pit) and Workout. More pictures and a video from that show are below.

Jesuslesfilles

I wrote yesterday how we don't get a lot of French language bands rolling through town, but there's actually a really good one playing tonight. Montreal's Jesuslesfilles will play the Swat Bar tonight (5/31) (59 Canal @ Allen) with Static Jacks and Team Spirit.

The band, who were last here for CMJ, make a super-catchy racket that's in the same garage as the Pixies or early Dandy Warhols. Trashy, fun, but not too reliant on in-the-red levels or reverb. Their 2010 debut remains a free download from their bandcamp page. You can stream it below alongside the flyer for tonight's show and a list of all tour dates.
