NYC trio Bottoms describe themselves as "two shitty drag queens, a 303 and a drummer" and a "gender-problematizing goth dance band." Simon Leahy and Michael Prommasi were both in Teeth, and they're rounded out by "lead screamer" Jake Dibeler. Musically, Bottoms draw inspiration from acid house, electroclash/dancepunk and other underground dance scenes; lyrically they mix camp with some serious themes. They released "hiv" for World AIDS Day and they talked to FADER about their song "My Body":
Musically, it's was inspired by Terry Riley and the Paradise Garage sound. We're really interested in the dichotomy of upbeat music with a more depressing lyrical theme. It's like sad music for the club -- people dancing to a suicide note. Of course with most of bottoms music, there is always a sense of humor. In this way, the music becomes a fair representation of the three of us as people: simultaneously sad and funny, and complex.Bottoms' debut EP, Goodbye, was released this week via JD Samson's Atlas Chair label. Tonight (1/23) at Secret Project Robot, Bottoms play a record release show with JD Samson and Ryan Smith as your DJs. You can buy advance tickets that also gets you a copy of the vinyl at the show. They've got a few European shows coming up, in April. All dates are listed below.
Leahy is also the founder of NYC Porn Film Festival, which will happen February 27 - March 1 at Secret Project Robot, details still TBA.
Brooklyn trio bottoms, who are self-described as "two shitty drag queens, a 303 and a drummer," count Simon and Michael of TEETH as their rhythm section, and they're fronted by performance artist Jake Dibeler "whose work touches on historical anxieties surrounding HIV and gay suicide, which he uses as the basis of his lyrics." Their new EP comes out in January via Atlas Chair, the label co-run by JD Samson of Le Tigre and MEN, and fans of JD's electroclash will likely dig the new single "Boring" which premieres in this post.
Bottoms, who maybe you caught at Palisades last month with Dope Body and Rat Fist, have two more hometown shows this week. First they play a last-minute "mini show" tonight (11/3) at Macy Rodman's Bathsalts @ Don Pedro's and then they play Wednesday (11/5) at Union Pool with Kitten Forever, Haribo (Raul de Nieves) and The Soft Batch. The Union Pool show is $8 at the door.

The Cribs @ MHOW, April 2012 (more by Guy Eppel)
After a stint with legendary guitar-slinger Johnny Marr joining the group, The Cribs slimmed back to their all-Jarman power trio line-up for this year's In the Belly of the Brazen Bull, their best album in a while which made Best of 2012 lists from NME and The Fly. Currently residing here in Brooklyn (where he's working on an album with Jen Turner), frontman Ryan Jarman was nice enough to give us his Top 10 Tracks of the year. He prefaces his list with this:
I tend to see end of year lists as like homework or something so it always gets done at the very last minute. However, now I live in Brooklyn I thought it was good form to make the effort for the local rag so here is my quickly thrown together top 10 tracks of the year.Ryan and Jen's band, Exclamation Pony were added as an opener to the previously discussed Mission of Burma show in NYC on January 18 at Bowery Ballroom. Brooklyn duo House of Ladosha, who recently opened for Azealia Banks, have been around for some time but they've been buzzing a bit lately due to an increased attention to the "gay rap" (for lack of better words) scene, which has been the subject of many recent articles, most of which they are mentioned in, along with Mykki Blanco (who plays NYC this week) and the arguably more successful Le1f.
They have two upcoming local shows scheduled at the moment, including 285 Kent on August 25 with Triple Six Sound Club, Neuport, and P.O.L. Style and Santos Party House on September 20 with SSION, whose video for "FEELZ GOOD (4-EVR)," which you can watch below, features a cameo from House of Ladosha, and TEETH. The Santos show also doubles as SSION's album release party. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
House of Ladosha just dropped a new song called "Bel Ami" (ft. C-Breezy), which you can download above, or stream below with the SSION video and a list of all upcoming dates...
Julia Holter @ Le Poisson Rouge in March (more by by Amanda Hatfield)
Unsound Festival New York, the Poland-based series of avant-leaning, ambient and experimental music, kicks off five nights in NYC with two events tonight (4/18): instrumental Warsaw band Baaba scores animations at BAM, while Julia Holter, Julia Kent and Jenny Hval playing a sold-out show at Issue Project Room.
Check out the festival's full schedule, which includes several free shows such as LXMP and Peaking Lights at Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium on Thursday 19th (both have amazing songs on the comp below). Issue Project Room hosts free day sets Saturday and Sunday (though only tickets for Saturday appear to still be available).

I hadn't seen them live for a long time, and they played in LA--four middle aged guys on laptops, how boring is that? But, fucking hell, it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. That's when I really thought, yeah, you can stand there with your laptop and do your thing as long as you got the fucking sound.
Inner Tube were set to play Le Poisson Rouge on Friday, but have been replaced by Mark McGuire (solo). And:
a visual program has been added to Bass Mutations on April 21, showing the ways in which visual artists have helped shape the way we imagine bass music. Curated by "Big Up Magazine" Editor-In-Chief Katya Guseva in collaboration with Dave Q from Dub War NYC, it will take place in a movie theatre adjacent to the dancefloor at the venue for the night, IndieScreen. Live audio from Bass Mutations performers such as 2562, Teeth, Sepalcure, Distal, Throwing Snow and Nguzunguzu will provide the soundtrack.Stream an excellent playlist of Unsound artists below...

Julia Holter at LPR last week (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Julia Holter, who has been making a ton of buzz lately with her excellent new album, Ekstasis, and her NYC live debut, which you can now watch in full at NPR, will be playing the first day of the fest on Wednesday, April 18 at Issue Project Room with Julia Kent and Jenny Hval.
On Thursday, April 19, psych/dub duo Peaking Lights and LXMP will play a free show at David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center at 7:30 PM. That show will be followed by live sets by Actress, Next Life, and Hype Williams at Le Poisson Rouge at 11 PM.
Friday's (April 20) shows include Sun Araw, pole, and Inner Tube at Le Poisson Rouge at 6 PM and live sets by Laurel Halo, Ital, Demdike Stare, Hieroglyphic Being, Zemi17 and Monolake at Warsaw at 10 PM.
On Saturday, April 21, Biosphere and Lustmord's special TRINITY piece will be performed at West Park Presbyterian Church at 7 PM with an opening set by Jacaszek. After that show, at a venue TBA we'll get Sepalcure (live A/V set), Nguzunguzu (DJ), 2562 (DJ), Teeth (live), Throwing Snow (DJ), DaveQ (DJ), and Distal (DJ).
The festival wraps up on Sunday, April 22 with mostly Unsound LABS, including a talk with Biosphere & Lustmord on 'TRINITY' at the Goethe-Institut Wyoming Building at 4 PM. Glasslands will then hosting the Unsound Festival closing party at 9 PM with live sets by Napszyklat and Maria Minerva (who will be making her US debut) and DJ sets by Sun Araw vs Heat Wave and Eltron John.

There is so much going on between now and Tuesday (2/13), I'm breaking This Week in Indie into two parts. Today you get Thursday, Friday and some of Saturday, then tomorrow will be Pt 2 with more Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. For those of you who aren't going to Austin next week (and I know most people aren't even if it seems otherwise sometimes reading the internet) you get a chance to sample some of the international action with bands from all over the world in town before (and after) the fest. I should warn you there are a lot of bands who spell their names with all-caps in the post. I am not shouting at you.
First thing, we're giving away a pair of tickets to Django Django's sold-out U.S. debut at Glasslands Saturday night which BrooklynVegan is presenting with Popgun Booking. I'm pretty psyched for this show. Their debut album is out now digitally (and on Spotify) in the U.S. and is one of my favorites of 2012: danceable, melodic, trippy and organic, owing more than a little to fellow Scots The Beta Band. (Go figure: main Django Dave Maclean's older brother John was in the Betas and The Aliens.) Says The Guardian:
Those worried that British guitar music has lost its ability to refresh old forms should pay heed to Django Django, whose debut album posits an updated psychedelia that beguiles and delights. Their foundations are a rickety, minimal take on the music of the immediate pre-psychedelic era - Hail Bop employs heavily tremeloed surf guitar; Default takes Bo Diddley's shave-and-a-haircut-two-bits beat and bolts on a jerky R&B guitar line - over which are laid skittering electronics and bleached, vibratoless harmonies, as if Django Django's four members were supplicants worshipping the desert sunrise. Yet it's also an exercise in clever restraint: drummer and band mastermind David Maclean often eschews everything bar his kick drum, floor tom, cymbals and tambourines, creating an amniotic throb.Also playing the Glasslands show will be D. Gookin, a last-minute sub for Kwes who had some visa issues. (I'll be DJing between bands.) If you can't make it Saturday night, Django Django play again on Monday at Santos (we're also presenting this show too with Neon Gold and Popgun) with the very au courant Charli XCX and Clock Opera (who play a now-sold out show at Knitting Factory too). Playing Glasslands earlier in the night on Saturday (a separate show) is another UK act, Daughter, who also play an early show the night before (3/9) at Mercury Lounge and our Friday day party at Hotel Vegas at SXSW. Originally a solo project for UK singer-songwriter Elena Tonra, Daughter is now a proper band with electric guitarist (and Tonra's boyfriend) Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella. The band just signed to Glassnote who released Daughter's new EP, His Young Heart, which is streamable at the bottom of this post. (You can also download the EP's closing track at the top of this post.) Fans of Sharon Van Etten, Mountain Man and other spooky folk acts should not miss them.
METZ at M for Montreal 2010
Backing up a bit to tonight (3/8) and shifting gears entirely, Toronto trio METZ make their NYC debut at Cake Shop. These guys make blazing, spazzy noise rock, reminiscent of Brainiac, the roster of Amphetamine Reptile, or McLusky. They're pretty excellent in their din, with enough form and hooks to grab hold of too. The band only have a few singles under their belt (all of which you can stream/download for free at their Bandcamp) but their debut album is in the can waiting for some lucky label to release it.
METZ are down visiting our city with their neighbors Teenanger whose debut album, Frights, is a 9-song, 20-minute kick in the head that may remind some of The Hives or The Intelligence. There's a lot of snarl and sneer, and the production is great -- clear but not slick. The whole of Frights is streaming over at Canadian website Exclaim!. You can also download a track above and watch a couple videos (both are pretty cool) at the bottom of this post.
Tonight's Cake Shop show, METZ and Teenanger are the first two bands on the bill so you might get out of there by 11 if you've got somewhere else to go. Tomorrow night (3/9), they both play Death By Audio with Pop. 1280 making for a very appealing, angsty bill.
More Canadians in town, this time on the electronic tip: TRUST and Doldrums who play a late show tonight (3/8) at Mercury Lounge and an early show at Glasslands tomorrow (3/9). After that it's off to Austin (where TRUST is also on the bill of our Friday day party at Hotel Vegas), and then some West Coast dates, a few of which are with Blood Orange. All dates, including many SXSW-week appearances, are at the bottom of this post.
TRUST, a duo consisting of is Austra drummer Maya Postepski and vocalist Robert Alfons, make vaguely gothy/sleazy synth pop that you could imagine being danced to in warehouses in 1987. The sleaze is apparent with song titles like "Candy Walls," "Gloryhole" and "This Willing Flesh." Musically, I dig TRUST but Alfons sounds more than a little like Bill Hader's Vincent Price impression which makes the whole thing borderline novelty. Their debut, TRST, is out now on Arts & Crafts and you can stream it on Spotify. I bet it sounds great in a club, though, and will say the vocals are less egregious live, and will say I thought TRUST was good last year when I saw them open for Austra.
Doldrums is Toronto resident Alrick Woodhead who guests on Grimes' Visions and will soon be touring with Bear in Heaven. I've seen him perform a few times, like at M for Montreal where I wrote:
(Doldrums) was wonderfully ADD, twiddling knobs, hammering sample triggers and pacing around the stage. Too many ideas crammed into one 20-minute set? Maybe, but it was exciting seeing talent that is only just now beginning to show its potential.I thought he was even better when I caught him at Glasslands back in December. You're going to be hearing a lot more about this one in 2012.
The Glasslands show on Friday is also with Black Marble, a new musical venture from a couple of the Team Robspierre dudes that definitely falls in the minimal wave pigeonhole. Their Weight Against the Door EP came out last month on Hardly Art last month
Later that night at Glasslands its a separate show, with UK electro rockers TEETH. TEETH's debut album, Whatever, came out last year on Moshi Moshi and garnered favorable reviews and comparisons to Crystal Castles and Ponytail. It's loud. It's squelchy. It sounds like being off your face which is probably the optimal way to listen to them. You can stream Whatever on Spotify. The show (doors 11:30) also has Extreme Animals, Nike7Up, and a DJ set from True Womanhood so be ready to go all night.
