Eddie Vedder & Beth Ditto @ Rock Werchter 2012 - 6/29/2012
"Rock Werchter is a Belgian annual music festival held in the village of Werchter, near Leuven, since 1973. It is one of the five biggest annual rock music festivals in Europe (the other four being Exit, Sziget Festival, the Glastonbury Festival and Roskilde Festival). The 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 festivals received the Arthur award for best festival in the world at the International Live Music Conference (ILMC). It can host 85,000 guests daily, of which 67,000 combine all four days, to add up to a total maximum of 139,000 different attendees." [Wikipedia]You saw pictures from day one. Here we go with day two..
Day two of Belgium festival Rock Werchter kicked off for me with the still-reunited, classic California punk band X playing on the main stage. I stayed for their entire, great set which means I missed Belgium band School is Cool who were playing on the other side of the park. Judging by the bubbles seen on several attendees leaving that stage though, it looked like missed a fun time. Other bands on the second day, of this festival that featured so many big names, included Pearl Jam, Lana Del Rey, Jack White, Deadmau5, The Gossip, Beirut and many others
I couldn't make it to every band on all three stages each day, obviously, but I at least have a good excuse for missing Mastodon: I was getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the fest (many thanks to FIAF and Rock Werchter for the hospitality - and WAFFLES!). They took me behind the fences and gateways, to get a glimpse all that goes on to keep things moving. The scale and logistics were pretty mind-expanding. Some bullets:
- Rock Werchter goes for 4 days at the end on June, but initial setup begins in early May.
- More than 8000 are directly employed by the festival, with thousands more as subcontractors.
- More than 25% of the staff are directly engaged in security and safety of the venue and audience.
- Most staff are sourced locally to ensure direct local benefits from the festival.
- Rock Werchter is practically a small town, with everything but a school system on site (medical services, residences, offices, supply depots, repair stations, food services (including storage and preparation), and even on site garbage sorting and recycling.
- Thousands of large steel road plates are used throughout the facilities to protect the ground from vehicle traffic, and thousands of square meters of field and audience areas are also similarly protected using plastic and wood flooring.
No pictures from backstage, but more from who was playing on the stages, along with Pearl Jam's setlist, below...
Coldplay at All Points West 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)
Swedish duo Icona Pop will be heading to North America this month, where they'll play Glasslands on June 22 (tickets). Before they play that show, they'll DJ a VIbrations party one day earlier, 6/21 at Hudson Terrace Roof Deck with DJ sets by Cassian, Sean Glass, and guests. The party is free til midnight with RSVP.
In related news, Charli XCX (who wrote Icona Pop's song "I Love It") has a new EP out today called You're the One. You've already heard "Nuclear Seasons" and the Balam Acab remix of that song. Now you can listen to the EP's title track as well, which is streaming below. The EP also includes a Blood Orange remix of that song.
Charli is one of the many artists opening for Coldplay (who will never work with Justin Bieber) on their upcoming tour, including the Chicago date with Marina and the Diamonds. Other openers on the tour include Robyn (who opens their Texas shows), Frank Ocean (who recently announced his own tour), Wolf Gang (who has nothing to do with any group Frank Ocean is part of), Temper Trap, The Pierces, and Emeli Sande.
Emeli was in NYC last week to play Bowery Ballroom and MHOW with Selah Sue (if you went, how were those shows?) and she'll be opening the East Rutherford, NJ shows at Izod Center on August 3 and 4 with Marina and the Diamonds. Tickets for those shows are available. If you're going to the Coldplay shows, be careful with the "Xylobands" that are being given out at the concerts. Fans are reporting that these bands, "which create a dramatic effect at Coldplay gigs," have been randomly reactivating after the shows and causing traumas such as waking fans up in the middle of the night. "It is believed the only way to stop the glowing is to jam a pencil clip into the band." Maybe they should call them jam bands.
As mentioned, Marina and the Diamonds will return to the NYC area after that for two headling shows at Webster Hall (8/16 & 8/18) with MS MR. The 8/16 show is sold out but tickets for the 8/18 show are still available. MS MR will play NYC even sooner than that at Santos Party House on June 27.
Speaking of Coldplay openers, Rita Ora just recently opened a few dates for the band and she's in NYC tonight for a free show at Gramercy Theater. RSVP is closed but you maybe don't wanna go anyway? Beyonce and Jay-Z on the other hand, might already have plans to be there. They went to support her at Coldplay's show in Manchester on Sunday (6/10) and were then spotted headbanging during Coldplay's set. A video of said headbanging is below.

As we reported earlier this year, Crocodiles will release their third album, Endless Flowers, on June 5. The band, who played Mercury Lounge a couple weeks ago, are gearing up for a summer tour that will include a stop at Maxwell's on June 27 and an appearance at the Village Voice 4Knots Festival on July 14. DOWNLOAD: The Hundred in the Hands - Dressed in Dresden (MP3)
The Hundred in the Hands (photo by Timothy Saccenti)
The Hundred in the Hands released their self-titled debut album this week on the Warp label and the band play a record release party for it Friday (9/24) at Coco 66 with Blood Orange (aka Dev "Lightspeed" Hynes) opening and Blondes on the turntables. The band will then head out on the road with Australians The Temper Trap. All tour dates are at the bottom of this post, but they include gigs at both Terminal 5 and Wellmont Theater.
The album is a slinky mix of post-punk influenced dance pop, recommended if you like Phantogram or Friendly Fires. (Or to go back a couple decades, New Order or Curve.) No repeats from their This Desert EP from earlier this year, though it does contain last year's "Dressed in Dresden" single, which you can download at the top of this post. As to those influences, members Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell have offered up a mixtape on their Soundcloud page that goes a ways to putting their album into context:
Some of the mixtape songs are subliminal references and some are things we just always love while others still are things maybe people have said they've heard in what we do. Mostly our influences tend to be hidden and they're not references at the time or are things that we were listening to a lot and maybe they're in the blood and found their way into the DNA of the songs. Here are also those tracks we love and really did dig into trying and understand and dissect. But, we don't have a formula or a plan, no "Smiths + Surf =...". So, it gets a little stupid then when we're asked our influences and we end up rattling off a long list not all of which appears in the surface of our music. Still, we know what we like. Both "sides" of the mix are streamable at the bottom of this post. As is the video for The Hundred in The Hands' "Pigeons" which if you haven't seen is pretty freaky/great. Tour dates are below too...
