As you can tell in the above picture, Chromeo's Friday night show at Terminal 5 was in fact sold out. They now continue on tour until 2/19 with both MNDR and The Suzan, who both also opened the NYC show. Then in March Chromeo will head to Austin for SXSW. They play Coachella in April, and Sasquatch in May. All dates and a bunch more pictures from the Terminal 5 show, below...

On February 8, Okkervil River will release 'Mermaid,' a new 12" single featuring two b-sides from 'I Am Very Far'.
Terminal 5 is the first of many worldwide tour dates to be announced in support of 'I Am Very Far,' the band's first album in three years.

Get ready to dance. DJ's Rusko and Doorly are heading out on a North American tour together in April and March, hitting Terminal 5 in NYC on April 27th along the way. Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale Wednesday at noon, and general sale begins on Friday.
The show, and maybe even the tour, is sponsored by HARD, so not surprisingly Destructo's name is also on the Terminal 5 bill, just like it is for the March 18th (Crystal Castles) & 19th (Simian Mobile Disco) HARD shows at the same venue.
Rusko is also on the now-fully-announced lineup of Ultra Music Festival which is happening in Miami in March. He plays the same day as the Klaxons whose March and April tour is now also fully announced.

"Tokyo Police Club at Terminal 5. These men do indie rock well" - Luke McCormick
In the awkward land of co-headlining shows there's always one band that you think should be the headliner. Personally, going in, I knew all along that Tokyo Police Club would be that band when they and Ireland's Two Door Cinema Club performed at Terminal 5 on Friday. Having been thwarted in three previous attempts to see them live (the most notable being an unfortunate corresponding time slot opposite My Bloody Valentine at All Points West in 2009) I was still hoping the band that drew me way in with their excellent Lesson In Crime EP and followed it up with two hook-laden full-lengths would be the same one taking the stage as part of "The Last.fm Festival".
But going on after Two Door Cinema Club and their highly polished electro-pop anthems, complete with blinding light show, Tokyo Police Club seemed to spend most of their set trying to match TDCC in both sound and arena rock grandeur, when their songs, as brash and catchy as they are, beg for slightly more nuance. Or perhaps restraint. I was a tad let down, but more on that later
Two Door Cinema Club's set, for long periods, sounded like the same song over and over - did they just play "Undercover Martyn" or "Something Good Can Work"? - with the same high hat-led dance beat as well as recorded backing track and even canned horns on set opener "Cigarettes in the Theater". "What You Know" was a highlight as Alex Trimble crunched out a solitary guitar riff and then sang without accompaniment before the rest of the band launched in to support him. Yet, even then, the catchy guitar pluck so noticeable on record was lost, such the volume of the backing track.
Bloc Party instantly comes to mind but for all the pulsing lights and clear, bigger venue ambition TDCC have a long way to go and are still short on variety before they can match that kind of live performance. But the sold-out crowd was very much into the set and prior to the sing-along of set closer "I Can Talk" (also a highlight) Trimble pulled extra applause when he mentioned how great their CMJ performance at Webster Hall was last October but that "tonight was even better."
Happy Birthday Dave Monks
That Tokyo Police Club entered to the dying strains of Bill Conti's "Theme from Rocky" (their 2010 release was, after all, called Champ), underscored how much of an underdog they may consider themselves. For a band that was set to call it a day before the Pop Montreal performance that ultimately led to them signing their first record deal, their first full-length Elephant Shell was unjustly considered a let-down on the heels of the Lesson EP (though it was featured quite a bit on Friday.)
"We're Tokyo Police Club and we're fucking excited to be here," said birthday boy and lead singer David Monks one song into their set. And you could tell how excited they were - Monks and guitarist Josh Hook pressed heads during "Nature Of The Experiment" and then Monks scurried over and pressed his head into keyboardist Graham Wright's back and then he was coaching the crowd in how to clap during "Tessellate".
But as Monks' vocals continued in a hollowed echo - like he was in a hangar instead of a terminal, it pulled more and more away from the rest of the band's sound. Monks is not shy on packing loads of lyrics into the band's sub-three-minute songs and it was frustrating to have them lost in the mix at times.
Though on songs like "End Of A Spark" which featured Passion Pit's Ian Hultquist on acoustic guitar, and the slow build of Champ's lead track, "Favourite Food" - songs that weren't straight forward postpunk - "Breakneck Speed" was another, everything fell into place and they showed why they deserve to be tops in the pecking order with their tour mates.
After they finished their set with "Wait Up", complete with audience participation on the "woo oooh ooohs" and "Your English Is Good" both Tokyo Police Club and Two Door Cinema Club came out for the encore. "We're going back to 2001," said Monks (who was 14 then), before the ensemble launched into The Strokes' "Last NIght". It was fun, wonderfully timed and the crowd ate it up. It was hands down the highlight of the evening as Monks and Trimble took turns on vocals and everyone else ended up on the drum riser playing to TPC drummer Greg Alsop.
Lost in the fray were Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin who opened the night with a straightforward set of easy, indie-pop numbers. Including those from last year's subtly underrated, Chris Walla-produced, Let It Sway.

As you know, Broken Social Scene play Terminal 5 on January 18th with Here We Go Magic. Tickets are still available for all of you procrastinators, but for all of you agoraphobics (and people who just can't make it for one reason or another like maybe you don't even lve in NY) I have some great news. The entire show will be streamed live at 9PM EST, on the Bowery Presents Youtube channel.
The show is one of two upcoming dates for Here We Go Magic, who have also scheduled a secret show in Philadelphia, PA at an undisclosed location on 1/22 with NIGHTLANDS, Ape School, and Norwegian Arms. Keep your eyes on the Facebook invite.
In other Arts & Crafts-related news, Chilly Gonzales is scheduled to play Joes's Pub in NYC tomorrow (1/14), a one off for the composer/songwriter and his only current tour date. Tickets are still available. Chilly was in residence at the same NYC venue during February of last year.

Eugene Hutz has restless continent syndrome. The Ukrainian Gypsy musician, whose Gogol Bordello played the first of two sold-out nights at the 9:30 Club on Thursday, arrived in New York in the 1990s but just couldn't stay. He now lives in Brazil and is usually on the road with his voraciously eclectic band...
The group opened with one of several internationalist anthems, "Tribal Connection,'' a folkie rabble-rouser with a reggae beat, a hip-hop interlude and Slavic violin and accordion accents. As the 95-minute show continued, stylistic shifts occurred roughly as often as the musicians switched instruments or rushed to another part of the stage... Gogol Bordello's style is descended from the Clash's "Sandinista'' and Franco-Spanish cult band Mano Negra, and shares those predecessors' political outlook. -[The Washington Post]
Gogol Bordello and Man Man played two nights at 9:30 Club in Washington DC, Dec 30th and Dec 31st, before scooting to NYC to team up with Endless Boogie to play the first show of 2011 at Terminal 5. The celebration continued at an afterparty at Studio 21 in Chelsea later Saturday night.
The show was the second of three in a row for Endless Boogie, who spent their New Year's Eve at Lit Lounge, and last night (1/2) at the LES bar Max Fish which is scheduled to close down at the end of January. More pictures from Terminal 5, as well as some video and Gogol's setlist, are below. ..

4AD and The Red Hot Organization are delighted to announce that $1,000,000 has been so far donated to charity from the proceeds of the DARK WAS THE NIGHT album. The album was released by 4AD in February 2009, and is a musical collaboration conceived and produced by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, and Red Hot founder John Carlin. It contains 32 exclusive tracks by an unbelievably talented roster of artists, including Arcade Fire, Blonde Redhead, Bon Iver, Cat Power, The Decemberists, Dirty Projectors + David Byrne, Feist, Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket, The New Pornographers, Spoon, and Sufjan Stevens - to name just a few.As you may have heard or just read above, Dark Was The Night raised lots of money, so good work to everyone involved including The New Pornographers whose contribution to the album was a cover of Destroyer's "Hey, Snow White," a song they performed last night at Terminal 5, ironically without Dan "Destroyer" Bejar (a member of the New Pornographers) present. They also played about 22 other songs at the 12/6 NYC show that Ted Leo & the Pharmacists opened.
In order to recognize the generous contributions of the artists involved with Dark Was The Night, Red Hot asked them to recommend charitable organizations whose work they admire. The list of organizations is below.
The Red Hot Organization was founded in 1989 to deal with the crisis surrounding the devastation of the AIDS epidemic on the creative community in downtown New York. Dark Was The Night, released in February 2009, was the 20th Red Hot album.
Beggars Group chairman Martin Mills states "Aaron and Bryce pulled together a wonderful collection of artists, songs and performances that perfectly encapsulates these times and really makes Dark Was The Night into an 'album' - a labor of love that has created this amazing and very tangible result!"
Dark Was The Night was a long time in the making, and the result of a lot of hard work and generosity from a long list of supporters. Aaron Dessner sums everyone's feelings up very well. "We want to thank all of the artists and everyone at 4AD again for helping us make Dark Was The Night happen. We also want to thank everyone who has bought this record -- your donations amount to a very significant contribution to Red Hot's mission fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS."

Ted Leo & the Pharmacists are finishing a short tour that included opening for The New Pornographers at Terminal 5 in NYC last night (12/6). A set of pictures from Ted's set is in this post (the New Porn pics are HERE).
Ted then has his two Citizens Arrest reunion shows to play later this month (they played a surprise show without him recently), and will head back out on the road in the new year, but this time on his own. A full set of solo dates, and more pictures from T5 below...

Crisp pressed shirts, khakis, sport coats, and bulging neck veins (due to vocal exertion) were the order of the evening at Terminal 5 last night (12/2), as The Walkmen headlined the NYC venue.
"The Walkmen deftly tore through a set with singer Hamilton Leithauser playing up the frontman role to a tee. His voice was absolutely fantastic and there are few vocal performances that I've seen in recent memory that had me as captivated. Songs like "Canadian Girl" and Lisbon cut "While I Shovel The Snow" were exquisite, and the set closing crowd favorite "The Rat" was very powerful. This was a set I did not want to end, but I can't say I was angry when it ended before midnight thanks to it being a weeknight. I would go see them again tonight if I could." [I Have 19 Voices]School of Seven Bells and Tennis both opened the show.
The Walkmen play a "hometown show" of sorts tonight at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC (the band grew up in the area before moving to NYC), and then call it a day with respect to shows for 2010. The new year means a new batch of dates though. In January Hamilton will belt it out at various venues in the Southeast before heading overseas to bless the UK. All dates are below.
Denver's Tennis, who will join The Walkmen again in DC, headlined Mercury Lounge the night before Terminal 5. All of their dates are below too.
School of Seven Bells (now a duo, Alejandra Deheza and Benjamin Curtis) will hit the road for a string of dates with Interpol in the new year. And though they are not currently scheduled to open for Interpol at Radio City, no openers have been announced for the NYC show yet, and SoSB do open the shows right before and after that one (so maybe they'll get added?).

A-Trak looking spiffy
"A Trak has proven himself to be one of the most talented DJs around, period. I had a chance to watch his set from the "backstage" area at Terminal 5 last night and was thoroughly blown away. Flying Lotus put on an incredibly energetic performance that set the stage for A Trak, who rocked his turntables in a tuxedo atop a 2 story platform covered in lights and LCD screens. Visually, it was a spectacle in its own right. Needless to say the crowd lost it for dance floor anthems like 'Anyway', 'Barbara Streisand', 'Shake It Down' and his 'Indestructible' remix. Amidst the furious scratching and beat juggling he is famous for, you could hear hints of hip-hop rhythm working their way into the electro until ultimately you found yourself dancing to straight up rap music." [Electronica Oasis]A proven way to burn off all the calories associated with piles of stuffing and t(of)urkey is to hit the dance floor, and that's just what many people did on 11/26 at Hard Fest Turkey Soup at Terminal 5, though in this case it was the kind of dance party where everyone faces the stage. Featuring appearances from A-Trak, Tiga, Flying Lotus, Miike Snow (who performed a DJ set), Yelawolf, and Destructo, the show was a one-off appearance for all of the above as part of the Hard Fest series of shows which last made appearances in NYC in for the form of Crystal Castles/Sinden/Destructo and Die Antwoord/MIA/Destructo/etc. One thing all three recent HARD NYC shows had in common? Destructo on the bill. Why? One reason might be because Destructo also happens to be HARD's founder.

It is played by blowing air into it or drawing air out by placing lips over individual holes (reed chambers) or multiple holes. The pressure caused by blowing or drawing air into the reed chambers causes a reed or multiple reeds to vibrate up and down creating sound. Each chamber has multiple, variable-tuned brass or bronze reeds, which are secured at one end and loose on the other end, with the loose end vibrating and creating sound." [Wikipedia]Bob Dylan played his harp Tuesday night at Terminal 5 on songs like "This Wheel's On Fire" and "Ballad of a Thin Man" while Joanna Newsom was playing her harp a few blocks away at Carnegie Hall on songs like "Peach, Plum, Pear" and "Bridges and Balloons." Both Joanna and Bob switched to keys for some songs, though Bob could occasionally be found with a guitar in his hands too.

Visual similarities to Lady Gaga aside, Kate Nash headlined Terminal 5 in NYC on Friday night as part of a North American tour, with excellent UK band Peggy Sue, that ended at Wellmont Theater in NJ one night later. Trachtenburg Family sideproject Supercute! opened the NYC show too. You might remember they also opened for Kate at Bowery Ballroom. Except back then, the youngsters were a trio. They recently lost a member and are looking for a new one (hide your kids!). I quote...
"In yet another of their trademark twists on the cliches of the music business, teenage indie-bubblegum sensations SUPERCUTE! JUNE LEI has quit the band because she thinks her PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION (she's a freshman in high school) is more important than SUPERCUTE, or touring the world and making money and appearing in the NYTimes and many other periodicals.
(Maybe she wants to see how Cosmopolitan's boss Cathie Black "runs" the schools as NYC's new Schools Chancellor!)
(Evidently June NEEDS the extra schooling, because anyone who thinks an American diploma is worth more than a soiled donut in an alleyway is farrrrrr behind the curve!)
And while many college graduates have tried to explain to June that college is a waste of time and (a LOT of) money - it's like a full-time job YOU pay $50 an hour to work at! - and you learn a lot more in real life, she's stuck in the gutter of life's bowling emporium, trusting that rut and enjoying that "groove"!!
WE HERE AT EMPIRE GOODNESS cannot understand her position but to each, his or her own.
But we are very sad to see her, the George Harrison of the band, walk away from such great chemistry.
99% of musicians will never get paid to tour the world and goof off and make art with their friends, but June thinks she can just go right back to that in the future if she likes. She doesn't realize how lucky she was to be touring the world at age 14, without even trying!"

"While Glen Hansard is more recently known for his 2008 Oscar win for co-writing 'Falling Slowly' and being one-half of the folk duo the Swell Season, his first band the Frames is what has made this singer and songwriter a legend in the Irish rock scene. So when the band celebrated their 20-year anniversary, it was obvious that Hansard was overwhelmed by the heroes' welcome he, Colm Mac Con Imoaire, Joe Dole, Rob Bochnik and Graham Hopkins at New York City's Terminal 5.The Frames played 21 career-spanning songs on Saturday night, four encores, and the Swell Season's Marketa Irglova on piano for a tune, included. The crowd, as Glen Hasnard even pointed out, was heavy with Irish accents. They cheered appreciatively and even broke out into the signature football (soccer) chant of "ole ole" between songs.
"Sincerely everybody, we really appreciate you coming out to us," Hansard told the packed venue on Saturday night (Nov. 20). "We thought you've forgotten us. You've given us a great welcome."" [Spinner]
Jake Clemons opened the show with, according to Toby, "a 40 minute set of up-tempo country pop tunes. Before he left the stage he declared his gratitude to the Frames for allowing him to open for them and was quick to credit Glen Hansard for being the reason he learned to play guitar in the first place."

The Pogues @ Roseland Ballroom in 2009 (more by Faith-Ann Young)
The Pogues will return to the states this March, hitting Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Washington DC, Boston and New York along the way.
And speaking of three nights in a row at Terminal 5, that's exactly what they'll do in NYC this time instead of Roseland as usual. They play Terminal 5 on March 15th, 16th and 17th. The final day is St Patrick's Day.
Tickets for the whole tour go on presale via the band on Tuesday, November 23rd at 3pm. Tickets to the NYC shows go on general sale Friday, November 26th at noon ($65 advance / $70 day of show). All dates below...

"Towards the end of Friday night's Suicidal Tendencies concert at the 9:30 Club, lead singer Mike Muir brought the band's photographer on stage to share his experiences in DC earlier in the day. The photographer introduced as "Luke from Australia" is in the United States for the first time while video-taping ST's tour. Their DC tour stop gave Luke the opportunity to do some sight seeing earlier in the day. One of his stops was the White House; where he was briefly detained and questioned by security; for taking pictures while wearing a Suicidal Tendencies t-shirt and having an accent.Suicidal Tendencies headlined Terminal 5 in NYC last night, Monday (11/14), with classic hardcore veterans Cro-Mags and Underdog, as well as beatdown-core Boston thugs Death Before Dishonor. ST are back in business after 10+ years away, and are currently touring the US as part of the No Mercy Fool!/The Suicidal Family tour which hit Fun Fun Fun Fest in early November. That tour concludes on Sunday (11/21) in Albuquerque.
During the show, Muir asked Luke to relate his tale to the audience before the band launched into their controversial 80's hardcore song "I Shot The Devil" better known as "I Shot Reagan". It was a classic punk rock move and a reminder of a time when the nation had bigger things to worry about than Al-Qaeda; like swear words in music, the failure of New Coke, and mutually assured destruction." For those of you who are fans of the ST offshoot Infectious Grooves, the band is playing their first US show in ten years at House of Blues in LA on November 23rd (tickets). No word on if it'll lead to other shows.

Robyn @ Terminal 5
During "Dancing On My Own," a song about seeing a lover with someone else, Robyn transformed a somber subject into an empowering dance-your-worries-away anthem that inspired singing from the audience.NYC loves Robyn, and she loves 'em right back. After playing Music Hall of Williamsburg in late July and two shows in August at Webster Hall with Kelis, in addition to a private show (pictures from night 1 at Webster Hall), Robyn circled back to the tri-state area on Wednesday night (11/10) to play Terminal 5 with her tourmates, NYC's Maluca and LA/Londoners Natalia Kills. Robyn ripped through 18 songs across two encores. The full setlist is below along with more pictures from the show.
Robyn continued to "body talk" with each movement, even during the interludes. After pelvic gyrations against her drummer's drum set and enough twirling in circles to make a person drop dead, Robyn pounded through songs -- her newest single "Indestructible," "Love Kills," "The Girl and the Robot," and "With Every Heartbeat" -- before professing her deep love for New York and exiting the stage.
She reemerged for two dance-infused encores. On the second, she performed her recent song "Dancehall Queen," then transitioned it into a cover of Abba's "Dancing Queen" before performing a gentle version of her 1997 hit "Show Me Love." The crowd was more than happy to do that. -[MTV News]
Last night Robyn appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (which is taped in NYC). Tonight (11/12), she continues her November tour in Toronto.

Enslaved supported Dimmu Borgir (not to be confused with Dimmu Burger) alongside Blood Red Throne and Dawn of Ashes at Terminal 5 on Monday 11/8. The show is part of a larger tour in support of new LPs, as both Enslaved released their newest LP Axioma Ethica Odini and Dimmu dropped Abrahadabra via Nuclear Blast in late September.

I have a friend who, despite my attempts to proselytize, doesn't much care for the songs from Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes. He thinks they're catchy, sure - only a hopeless misanthrope or a space alien wouldn't - but he doesn't like the feel of those lo-fi songs: recored on four-track and cut up and reassembled, swathed in abrasive sound.The above review refers to Guided By Voices' November 5th Boston show but, but these pictures come from the NYC show that took place at Terminal 5 two days later. I've tried to tell him that in concert, those transistor-radio mini anthems, drawing on Pollard's "four P's" (pop, punk, prog, and psych), are utterly transformed into pure, pummeling, lung-busting ROCK. They are writ large and loud with beer-fueled bombast.
And so it was: 840 people pumped fists and held lighters aloft, shouting along in unison to the Beatle-esque "Echos Myron," the leering "Hot Freaks," the light-speed "Shocker in Gloomtown," the snotty call-and-response of "Lethargy," the euphoric "Gold Star for Robot Boy." -[The Phoenix]

Guided By Voices at Terminal 5 (photo by Schnappy Star)
Well that was certainly a show I'll never forget. As any hardcore Guided By Voices fan will tell you, the short period from 1993-96 when Robert Pollard's long-running titular band released Propeller, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes and Under The Bushes, Under The Stars is regarded as their shining moment. So an entire tour revolving around those albums, classic lineup intact, is pretty much the greatest thing ever. Needless to say, everyone at Terminal 5 last night was ecstatic.
Sub Pop's Blitzen Trapper opened the show at 8pm with their set of twangy indie folk-rock. The six-member Portland, Oregon based group sounded as happy to be there as anyone, noting that their tour with GBV has been amazing, and they were clearly a well-rehearsed and talented act. Playing to an already packed crowd of anxious fans may not get you an uproarious response, but the band kept it short and was finished by 8:35pm. And so the GBV chanting began...
Pollard and co. kept us waiting until 9:20pm, when suddenly all the lights went out and a collage of random talk-radio recordings went on for what seemed forever, sometimes repeating "guided by voices", which incited mass cheering. At long last, the neon sign stating "The Club Is Open" lit up and the cigarette-toking, tequila and beer-swilling Guided By Voices took the stage.
The band wasted no time hitting the classics, opening with "Tractor Rape Chain", "Game of Pricks" and "I Am A Scientist". But let's face it, all of their songs are classics. The vibrant crowd sang along throughout most of the performance, quite a few singing along to every lyric of every track. And let me say that if you haven't sung "A Salty Salute" along with 3,000 other Guided By Voices fans, it's pretty fucking fun. Guitarist Mitch Mitchell was never without a lit cigarette in his mouth, and bassist Greg Demos made motions like the rock stars they arguably never actually were. Hearing Kevin Fennell's drums in such fidelity, especially on songs like "My Valuable Hunting Knife" and "A Good Flying Bird" where full drums were missing from the lo-fi recordings, breathed new life into the band's prolific catalog.
Notable mention must also go to Tobin Sprout, whose contribution to this material has always been highly regarded. His and Pollard's vocal harmonies on "Awful Bliss" and "14 Cheerleader Coldfront" were absolutely pitch-perfect, even more reminiscent of Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey than ever before. Pollard's microphone twirling and high kicks do even more to perpetuate the comparison to the Who, and I've personally always thought of GBV as the band the Who could've been had they recorded solely on 4-track cassette and not achieved such success. But I digress. It really was great to see Sprout back on stage with this band.
As Pollard chugged from his bottle of tequila throughout the night, coming back for three encores, he never once sounded off key or tired, or hell, even intoxicated, despite practically being carried off the stage at the end. Would I have liked to have heard later songs like "I Am A Tree" or "Glad Girls"? Maybe. But that's not what this tour is about. In Pollard's own words towards the end of the show, after Under the Bushes, Under the Stars, "everything sort of went downhill." Though that is debatable (didn't Bob once say that GBV hadn't even peaked yet around 2003?), one thing is clear: the band that played last night is without a doubt the definitive Guided By Voices. And if you're questioning whether it's worth trying to get into to the New Year's Eve show at Irving Plaza, all I can say is that if last night was any indication, you are really missing out if you don't.

Artist Direct: Which records shaped you?Maybe Beirut members were in the crowd last night, 11/2, when Florence and the Machine headlined their 2nd night in row at Terminal 5 in NYC with The Smith Westerns and Hanni El Khatib. Florence also played a set at the SoHo Apple Store earlier the same day, and is now on tour and will be on SNL later this month.
Florence Welch: When I was a teenager, I spent all of my time going to live gigs. Like I mentioned, my first boyfriend was in a band. There was a really strong South London punk art collective scene because there's a big art college. I spent all of my time going to see art college bands. My boyfriend was in one, and they were on the up-and-up. It was this intense rockabilly pirate punk blues stuff. For ages, the only music I listened to was live, really. I also listened to a lot of northern soul like Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Etta James, Tom Waits and The Talking Heads. The kids in my school were listening to The Libertines and stuff, but I was more into The Talking Heads. I really loved The White Stripes actually. I was a huge fan. The one that record that really shook me up was Arcade Fire's Funeral and maybe Beirut's Gulag Orkestar. I love Beirut! They're so incredible live. His voice is unbelievable. Brass sections are really busy. Whenever we have classical musicians on tour with us, they're always the hardest partying guys. We don't have a brass section, but I wish we did. They're the rock 'n' rollest of the bunch. It's always the cellists and violinists who are hitting it the hardest in the hotel bar [Laughs]. Beirut and his brass section are great. They look so relaxed, having a good time. They're playing the fucking trumpet and singing [Laughs].

The Smith Westerns just came through town as part of their tour with Florence and the Machine (maybe not the best match). Maybe you also maybe caught them over the weekend at the Halloween party they played. Last night, 11/2, was their 2nd of two shows with Florence at Terminal 5. The pictures in this post are from that event. Florence on Halloween in Boston (Dianna Quagenti)
After playing the Voodoo Music Festival in New Orleans over the weekend, Florence & the Machine kicked off a proper, but short, tour at House of Blues in Boston on Halloween. As you can see in the above picture, and in the video below, Florence and her band did not wimp out on celebrating the holiday.
Last night (11/1), that tour continued into NYC where Florence and the Machine played their first of two sold out shows at the massive Terminal 5. Both shows (last night and tonight) have The Smith Westerns and Hanni El Khatib opening.

Big Boi @ NYU in September (more by Lauren Monaco)
Hip-hop heavyweight Big Boi brought the house down [the other night at Moogfest] with a set of Outkast hits and stand-out tunes from his hot new album, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. Highlights of the set included "Rosa Parks," "Ms. Jackson," "So Fresh, So Clean," "Shutterbug" and "General Patton." A powerful live rendition of "Follow Us" featured Kyle Lucas of Vonnegutt singing the hook. And during "The Way You Move," Big Boi invited a group of ladies on stage to dance as he rapped the refrain: "I like the way you move / I love way you move."Big Boi will co-headline a pre-Christmas show with a Calvin Harris DJ set at NYC's Terminal 5 on December 22nd. Openers will be LA Riots and The Knocks (who just opened for Die Antwoord at Gramercy). Tickets ($45 advance general admission / $50 day of show general admission / $100 VIP admission includes 4 hour open bar) will go on sale Friday at noon.
While his Outkast collaborator Andre 3000 was missed, Big Boi was backed by a ferocious posse of live musicians and singers that included a drummer, guitarist, horn section and super hot female bass player wearing knee high black leather boots. He was also armed with a gang of choreographed backup dancers and hype-men that added to the visual spectacle.
During the live rendition of "Daddy Fat Sax," the sound turned distressingly towards metal-rap for a moment, but mostly Big Boi rode a deeply funky and danceable Dirty South groove. [Mountain Xpress]
