Beer & Cable at Acheron (more by BBG)
Beer & Cable

The Meatmen are going on tour in October, and it will be a full night of snotty punk in Brooklyn right after CMJ, at Europa on October 23rd. The NYC show features support from the one and only Black Fag (the absolutely fabulous tribute to Black Flag in their first NYC appearance!), Runny, and the always obnoxious Beer & Cable (thats a compliment). Tickets for the show are on sale. All daes are listed below.

Beer & Cable will also play a beer-soaked Acheron benefit show TONIGHT (9/16) for a mere $5 (or more if you want). Help keep this important metal/punk space alive.

Meatmen dates and a whole bunch of videos so attendees know what they're getting into, below...

Tesco Vee

Tesco Vee's Hate Police have scheduled a FREE NYC show at Generation Records on August 28th in conjunction with the release of his new and essential book TOUCH AND GO: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine '79-'83 out now via Bazillion Points. The show, which kicks off at 1PM, will be followed by a book-signing one hour later. Tony Rettman, author of Why Be Something That You're Not?, a look into early 80s Detroit hardcore, will also be there.

Later on that evening, Tesco Vee will team up With Negative Approach, Pissed Jeans, Mind Eraser, and others at Santos Party House for a release party for both books. Tickets are on sale.

Tesco Vee and Negative Approach will also be appearing at Chicago's Riot Fest taking place from Oct 6 - 10th in Chicago across six venues. Tickets for the festival, which features appearances from Bad Religion, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Articles of Faith, Cap'N Jazz, Snapcase, Corrosion of Conformity and many more. Tickets are currently on sale. Full lineup and flyer and tour dates below.

Negative Approach at Red 7(more here)
Negative Approach

Why Be Something That You're Not chronicles the first wave of Detroit hardcore from its origins in the late seventies to its demise in the mid-eighties. Through a combination of oral history and extensive imagery, Tony Rettman proves that even though the Southern California beach towns might have created the look and style of hardcore punk, it was the Detroit scene - along with a handful of other cities across the country - that cultivated the music's grassroots aesthetic before most cultural hot spots around the globe even knew what the music was about.

The book includes interviews with members of The Fix, Violent Apathy, Negative Approach, Necros, Pagans, Bored Youth, and L-Seven along with other people who had a hand in the early hardcore punk scene like Ian MacKaye, Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson.

The book is definitely something I will check out, and the release has sparked a ton of interesting shows in celebration including (in my opinion) the whopper of them all in NYC on August 28th; look for the destructive Negative Approach to team up with Tesco Vee's Hate Police, Mind Eraser (who are playing dates with Slang), Off With Their Heads (who have a Knitting Factory show of their own), Hellmouth, and New Lows at Santos Party House! Ticket info is forthcoming.

Negative Approach will also be in NYC on June 20th to play Punk Island along with a ton of other notables. The final roster for that festival, and more dates in celebration of Why Be Something That You're Not are below.

Stephen Bruton, a real-life guitar hero who played with everyone from Kris Kristofferson to Elvis Costello, died Saturday [May 9th] in Los Angeles.

The Fort Worth native was 60 and had been in California working on the soundtrack to Jeff Bridges' new movie, Crazy Heart, said his wife of 13 years, Mary Keating-Bruton.

Meatmen

The Meatmen are hitting the road tomorrow (4/16) for a Northeast tour including April 19th at Europa in Brooklyn with Chapstik, Loafass, and The Blackout Shoppers. Tickets are on sale. A little more than two weeks after The Meatmen wrap things up in Columbus, Ohio, the band will head out to the west coast for a second leg. All tour dates are below.

The Meatmen recently dropped a collection of covers and their first album in thirteen years, Cover The Earth. Featuring 24 covers of songs from "40 years of our favorite tunes", Tesco Vee & the boys recorded songs by Motorhead, GG Allin, Thin Lizzy, The Fugs, Roky Erickson, Fear and many others. Pick that record up at the show or here.

Speaking of Fear, the LA band has scheduled a pair of NYC dates at Europa on May 6th (tickets) and May 7th (tickets). Credit Mongrel with the assist on both nights, while Tall Black Girls & Violent Bullshit will open May 6th and Cerebral Ballzy & Runny will rock the 7th. Besides the NYC double header, Fear are also playing May 8th at Club Hell in Providence and May 9th at The Trocadero in Philadelphia. Lee Ving also recently opened a twitter account here.

As previously mentioned, The Fugs, who are also covered on Cover The Earth, will play The Bell House in Brooklyn on April 29th with Acrylics, White Williams, Golden Triangle and many others. The show is "a benefit concert... to raise money for Rory O'Sullivan, ...a 24 year old aspiring filmmaker suffering from a massive brain tumor". Regular tickets are on sale, and you can buy VIP tickets which include all types of freebies and will benefit a bonfide 501 (c)(3)... Those of you who just finished your taxes may know what that is. The Fugs current lineup is Tuli Kupferberg, Ed Sanders, Ken Weaver and Steven Taylor. All Fear and Meatmen dates below...

the Meatmen @ SXSW

The Meatmen are back again.... and you STILL suck! Who cares about Obama and Clinton when the news is that Tesco Vee is heading out on a campaign of his own... Monster Hate in '08! Tesco Vee, founder of The Meatmen and co-founder of Touch & Go Records, has a few dates scheduled including a show at Europa in Brooklyn on Aug 22nd. Tickets are on sale.

The Meatmen have always been (and still are) Tesco Vee and his latest collaborators. Collaborators have included Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion), Lyle Presslar (Minor Threat), Todd Swalla (Necros) and many many many others. According to SXSW, "The new line up includes current members of various Midwest hard rock bands including Superchrist, the Paybacks, the Sirens and Red Swan." Speaking of SXSW, that's where all the pictures in this post were taken (Friday, March 14, 2008, 10:00 p.m. @ Emo's Annex to be exact). Editor's note: The show was great. Tesco Vee is a true showman. Everyone in the crowd seemed to agree...

In related news, Dutch Hercules & the Meatmen have a new DVD, The Devil's In The Details, due out this summer (buy it here). It promises "2 Hours of Raw Meat Pleasure"... sounds yummy.

In less related news, but still related, reunited punks and Touch N' Go Labelmates, Negative Approach, recently played Southpaw and WFMU (which is available for download).
