Kyle photographed them Monday night at Terminal 5 (they were opening for Rilo Kiley) and he did it again last night at Mercury Lounge (a headlining show added at the last minute) (June 4, 2008).

In addition to playing music, Thao told a funny story about how some guy in a beret led her to a much too expensive internet cafe during the day. Then after checking her email she walked back to mercury lounge and kept smelling fish and vinegar. When she got to mercury lounge her bandmates pointed out that it was bird poop on her face that smelled like that, not the whole city. She cleaned it off and moved on.

Nguyen is raspy and jarring where Lewis is sweet and graceful, and her energetic, slightly manic performance definitely left an impression on the crowd. Extra kudos go to Thao's backing band, The Get Down Stay Down, for replacing almost an entire percussion section with really enthusiastic clapping and the best use of mariachis I've seen since grade four music class. Xiu Xiu in Ottawa, March 2008 (cobrasnatch)

The Xiu Xiu & Thao and the Get Down Stay Down tour reaches Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn tonight. Thao is also playing an in-store at Sound Fix this afternoon - at 3 pm to be exact. Happy Easter.

Tickets are (still) on sale for two upcoming NYC-area I'm From Barcelona shows in April. The band from Sweden is playing Maxwell's before they play Coachella and then coming back to the area to play the Brooklyn Masonic Temple after Coachella (and a couple other California shows). The Brooklyn show also has Thao with The Get Down Stay Down (who is currently on tour with Xiu Xiu) on the bill and is only $10 (before fees) because Boost Mobile and NY Magazine are sponsors, BUT I have no idea what this means:

Thao Nguyen live on WNYC

It was just six posts ago that the name "Nguyen" became the topic of conversation, and it was in that same post that we found out Thao Nguyen was on the radio yesterday. Now you can listen to that radio broadcast in the little embedded player up above, and you can hear Thao explain how to pronounce "Nguyen" in the video below (and keep watching because she sings a really good song after she finishes talking about, Kill Rock Stars, hoodies and other stuff).....

Bao Nguyen checked out Thao Nguyen (no relation) at her show "with The Get Down Stay Down" at Knitting Factory in NYC last night (Feb 4, 2008). I didn't talk to him for long, but he said the show was good. Thao reminds him (and many others) of Cat Power, and Thao even told a story at the show about running into Cat Power (Chan) at a radio appearance earlier that day. More of his photos below....

Alternative-folk music group, Thao Nguyen and The Get Down Stay Down, consists of Thao Nguyen (vocals, guitar), Frank Stewart (lead guitar, producer), Adam Thompson (Bassist), and Willis Thompson (drummer). Managed by Slim Moon, former president of the Kill Rock Stars label, the band is garnering much attention. After sending Like the Linen to Laura Veirs, Thao was able to get connected to Tucker Martine, Veirs' drummer and producer for The Decemberists and Sufjan Stevens.
