Thao & The Get Down Stay Down have announced details of their new album. It's titled A Man Alive, and will be released March 4 via Ribbon Music. The record was produced by Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs and it explores some new sounds. Thao says, "I wanted A Man Alive to be beat- and bass-driven--rather than guitar-based--extending and elaborating upon the hip-hop influences of the previous record. A Man Alive is more instrumental, more riff- and loop-centric, and has more manipulated sounds." The album was also inspired largely by Thao's volunteer work with the California Coalition for Women's Prisoners. You can check out the spirited first single, "Nobody Dies," below.
You can catch Thao & the Get Down Stay Down on their 2016 tour in the spring of 2016, including a NYC show at Webster Hall on April 13 with Saintseneca and Little Scream. Tickets are still available. Updated tour dates are listed below...

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down are planning to release an album next spring, and while most details are still TBA you can watch a new teaser video below. They're also touring around then and taking out two pretty great openers who both fall vaguely under the "indie folk" umbrella: Saintseneca and Little Scream (who, like Thao, took part in the Arthur Russell at BAM).
Those openers vary throughout the tour, but a few shows have both of them including the NYC show happening April 13 at Webster Hall. Tickets are on artist presale now and there's another presale starting Wednesday (11/18) at 10 AM. General on-sale starts Friday (11/20) at 10 AM.
Saintseneca released a new album earlier this year on ANTI-, and we're still waiting on that followup to Little Scream's 2011 debut on Secretly Canadian. Music from all three artists and tour dates, below...

The Super Bowl celebrates its 50th edition this year on February 7 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The halftime entertainment for the "Golden Super Bowl" hasn't been announced yet (Maroon 5 are the oddsmakers' favorites) but they have announced this year's now-annual "The Night Before" concert which happens February 6 at San Francisco's AT&T Park. Metallica are headlining and with openers Cage the Elephant. Tickets go on Citi presale on 11/4 at 10 AM Pacific, Giants season ticket-holder and Live Nation presale on 11/5 at 10 AM, and on sale to the general public on 11/6 at 10 AM.
In an interview video with radio jocks Lamont And Tonelli, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says getting to play this Super Bowl related show is a "huge honor." Check that out, and a commercial for the Day Before show, below.
In other large-scale, SF-based show news, The Decemberists, who have a new EP out and just played ACL Fest, are playing a big New Years Eve show at The Masonic with Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, and tickets for that one are already on sale.

New Pornographers / Thao @ Celebrate Brooklyn! 7/11/2015
The New Pornographers played a free Celebrate Brooklyn! show at Prospect Park Bandshell on Saturday (7/11). The last time they did this was in 2005, part of a Canada Day celebration. Frontman AC Newman noted how that show changed the course of his life in that he met his wife at it. "I have no idea where I'd be now if I hadn't played that show." It was a perfect night, weather-wise, and the bandshell couldn't have been more packed. Unfortunately the lineup this time didn't include either Neko Case or Dan Bejar (we were spoiled on last year's tour) but they were still great, playing a generous 22-song set. Thao & the Get Down Stay Down were well-matched openers for NPs, making for a lovely evening in Prospect Park. Pictures from the night, plus New Pornographers' setlist, are in this post.
This weekend New Pornographers will be in Chicago for Pitchfork Fest. More pics from Prospect Park below...

The first of two weekends of Austin City Limits went down in Austin over the weekend, a ton of official aftershows included. One of those shows was headlined by The National at Stubb's on Saturday. Thao and The Get Down Stay Down opened. Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver), who was in town to play with his band The Shouting Matches, surprised the lucky crowd by joining the National for their last two songs, "Terrible Love" and "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks" (Justin also sings on the album version). National frontman Matt Berninger gave the crowd even more love by jumping into it at the end of the latter. Watch video of both, along with a set of pictures from the show (though no pictures of Justin), and the National's setlist, below....

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down @ Pier 84, 7/25/2013
It wasn't just the Foxygen Show at Hudson River Park's Pier 84 on Thursday (7/26). Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, who have been touring their pants off in support of new album, We The Common, were also on the River Rocks bill. Pictures from their set (and The Aves who opened the night).
There's no tour letup in sight, either. She'll be spending the rest of the summer on the road with Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and then this fall, Thao will be out supporting The Head and the Heart. That tour will hit NYC for two shows: Terminal 5 on November 5 and Webster Hall on November 6. Quiet Life are also on both of those shows and tickets are on sale now.
All tour dates, plus more pics from Thao and The Aves at Pier 84, below.
The Moog Sound Lab is a video series where bands and artists are invited to perform in the Moog Music factory in Asheville, North Carolina. With an arsenal of Moog equipment at their disposal, the musicians offer radically new takes on their material.
Much like The Tallest Man on Earth, who was featured in the last installment, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down are not normally associated with electronic music but their time in the Moog Sound Lab made for interesting new direction. Performing "We the Common (For Valerie Bolden)" from this year's We the Common, Thao hangs onto her banjo but the rest of the band switched to Moog analog circuitry. Bassist Adam Thompson laid down thick lines on the Moog Sub Phatty Synthesizer while drummer Jason Slota keeping the beat with three Minimoog modules, and Johanna Kunin used a Slim Phatty poly-chain to color things in.
You can catch Thao & the Get Down Stay Down in NYC when they open for Foxygen at Hudson River Park's River Rocks on July 25 which is a free show.
Previous installments of The Moog Sound Lab series, which has been premiering here at BrooklynVegan, featured Diamond Rings, Zola Jesus, Washed Out, and Toro Y Moi. You can watch video of Thao & the Get Down Stay Down's Moog Sound Lab performance below.

We reported some Seaport Music Festival news earlier and now the free, annual River Rocks series (for the second year on Pier 84) has announced it's 2013 line-up. The first happens on July 11 with Generationals and Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside. Then the second happens on July 25 with Foxygen (who will hopefully actually play this time) and Thao & the Get Down Stay Down (who just toured with Sallie Ford) and Waxahatchee. And finally, on August 8 it's Titus Andronicus and Ducktails. That explains the absence of a NYC date on Titus' upcoming tour. All River Rocks shows are free and all-ages. Doors open at 6 PM.
Generationals just played Bowery Ballroom last night (4/22) and are sticking around for another NYC show TONIGHT (4/23) at The Rock Shop with Future of What. Tickets for tonight's show are still available.
Waxahatchee open for The Babies this Saturday (4/27) at Glasslands (sold-out).
Titus Andronicus just released a Record Store Day 12", which included "Still Lie with Hot Deuce and Silver Platter" from last year's Local Business and two previously unreleased tracks, "(I've Got A) Date Tonight" and "The Dog," the latter of which is sung by drummer Eric Harm, rather than frontman Patrick Stickles. Updated Titus dates are listed, along with a stream of "The Dog," below...

In addition to playing music, Thao told a funny story about how some guy in a beret led her to a much too expensive internet cafe during the day. Then after checking her email she walked back to mercury lounge and kept smelling fish and vinegar. When she got to mercury lounge her bandmates pointed out that it was bird poop on her face that smelled like that, not the whole city. She cleaned it off and moved on.
