The Black Keys (t-shirts) @ MSG last week (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
As it turns out, Beyoncé Knowles will not be the first artist to sing at the new Ovation Hall at Revel Resorts in Atlantic City. This morning, the casino hotel -- which will celebrate its grand opening on May 25 with the first of three Beyoncé concerts -- announced an Ovation Hall show a week prior to the big date. The Black Keys, the Grammy-winning Akron blues-rock duo with a lovably grimy sound, will appear at Revel on May 19. Tickets for the Black Keys concert go on sale March 30 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster.Beyonce tickets go on sale April 6 at Ticketmaster. The Black Keys play their 2nd of 2 shows at NYC's Madison Square Garden with the Arctic Monkeys TONIGHT (3/22). Pictures from the first are HERE.
Technically, the Keys won't be the first act to play at Revel, either. The hotel is opening a second performance space called the Social, a smaller room than the 5000-seat Ovation Hall. (This is likely to be similar to the division at the Borgata -- the Event Center handles the really big acts, and the Music Box takes care of the more intimate shows.) Revel is planning a soft opening -- they're calling it an eight-week preview -- on Apr. 2, and the casino is marking the occasion with a Social performance by Danish noise-pop the Raveonettes.
It's shaping up as a big spring and summer for popular music in Atlantic City. In addition to the Beyoncé shows on May 25, 26, and 27, Phish are scheduled to play a three-night stand at the disused Bader Field Airport on June 15, 16, and 17. A week later, Metallica brings its Orion Music + More festival to the same location. Bader Field successfully hosted the Dave Matthews Caravan last June.
UPDATE: and The Black Keys will be co-headlining a new NYC festival this summer too!

"They weren't pretending to be anywhere but an arena. A giant video backdrop showed splashy animated graphics and black-and-white road trip footage. Banks of spotlights flashed behind the band, and not one but two disco balls were lowered for an encore, "Everlasting Light."" Radiohead @ Roseland Ballroom in 2011 (more by Bao Nguyen)
Coachella which is taking place over the course of two weekends this year (April 13-15 and 20-22) revealed their 2012 lineup. Last week, Azealia Banks was the first artist confirmed, and earlier today they confirmed The Weeknd (maybe he found a band?), and before that, Jimmy Cliff, Breakbot, and Housse De Racket. The reunited Pulp then announced itself. The full lineup also includes headliners The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, not to mention, as predicted, the reunited At the Drive In and the reunited Mazzy Star (!), and Madness and Refused (!) and Jeff Mangum and many, many more that you can see below...
The Black Keys @ Summerstage 2010 (more by Jessica Amaya)
"They made every right step, and they never rushed it," said John Moore, the founder of Bowery Presents, in a telephone interview. "It seems like the perfect rise."The March 12th Black Keys/Arctic Monkeys show at Madison Square Garden sold out today (12/9), the same day the tickets went on sale to the general public, and so... they've added another one! Both bands will play MSG again on March 22. Tickets for the new date go on general sale Friday, Dec 16 at 9am.
Mr. Moore, whose company is promoting the Madison Square Garden show and first presented the Black Keys at the Mercury Lounge in 2002, mentioned Arcade Fire as the only other rock band of their generation with comparable arena status. [NY Times]
The Black Keys @ Webster Hall (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
photos by Dana (distortion) Yavin
The Black Keys played Webster Hall last night (12/6), a celebration of their new LP El Camino out NOW (as you may have noticed from the ads on this site today). Though the sponsored-by-Southern-Comfort show was small (compared to their next one at MSG anyway), their set was not, dipping deep into their back catalog, as you already know if you were not at Lana Del Rey and one of the few who got a ticket, or one of the many who watched it online....
The set list covered the whole of Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney's journey through and out of their roots, going back all the way to "I'll Be Your Man" on their 2002 debut, The Big Come Up, and stopping off at "Your Touch" from 2006's Magic Potion. The history lessons highlighted how far the duo has come from the binary stomp and grind of their early records to the trailer-park T. Rex effect of "Everlasting Light" on 2010's Brothers and the crossed wires of glam-era David Bowie and the MC5's guitar chaos in El Camino's "Gold on the Ceiling." The inclusion of "Chop and Change," a garage-noir outtake from Brothers that ended up on the Twilight soundtrack, Eclipse, proved they have plenty of that adventure to go around. What did you think?
For this show, arguably a preview of the band's 2012 U.S. arena tour, the Black Keys flipped the script of their Brothers live act. Instead of opening and closing as a duo, Auerbach and Carney spent most of the night working with their expanded lineup - Wood and bassist Gus Seyffert - and slimming down to a duo for a mini-set in the middle. In either format, the Keys still rely on simple knockout dynamics: Auerbach's spidery guitar intro (a la Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones' "Stray Cat Blues") into the climbing grind of "Girl Is on My Mind" from 2004's Rubber Factory; the primary drive of Carney's kick drum in the crunch and surge of El Camino's "Dead and Gone." -[Rolling Stone]
If you missed them, make sure and catch The Black Keys at the slightly larger Madison Square Garden on March 12th as part of their US tour with Arctic Monkeys. Tickets are currently on AMEX presale and go on regular sale Friday.

Here are a few things that happened on Coachella Day 1:
- it was hot.
- lots of celebrities, like Coachella regular Danny Devito, were walking around
- The Black Keys, Kings of Leon and the Chemical Brothers were the big headlining acts of the day (all on the main Coachella Stage)
- people wore funny outfits, and sometimes NSFW outfits.
- people sinned.
- Lauryn Hill started late, but not too late (aka she still got to play).
- Cee Lo showed up very late, apologized, but acted mad he had to play a short set. He used that anger to give his set-closing hit "Fuck You" context.
- Odd Future predictably drew a huge crowd, and were joined by Pharell.
- Odd Future's set resulted in a possible broken nose (again)
- There were 20 arrests
- Paul McCartney was there, and along with Usher, stood on stage during Afrojack's set.
- YACHT played
- Many other people played, and lots of other stuff happened too, as you can see in the pictures below...
What were your highlights of Coachella Day One? Are you there or watching the stream?
Photographer David Andrako managed to catch 18 acts and other random stuff in between on Friday. His pictures from the whole day continue below...
The Sasquatch! Music Festival is proud to announce that the event has completely sold out of all 100,000 tickets (25,000 per day over 4 days) in record time exactly one week from the lineup announcement. This year's Coachella sold out slightly quicker. This year's Bonnaroo goes on sale Saturday, February 19th at noon Eastern. The lineup was announced today.
All festival attendees are encouraged to carpool to the event and register their mileage savings at www.esurance.com/carpool to win prizes and track the positive environmental impact. People who shared rides to Sasquatch in 2010 (and registered with Zimride), saved 326,920 driving miles--the equivalent of 1.37 trips to the moon.
The Walkmen are playing Bonnaroo, and their frontman is playing in Brooklyn this weekend.
Sharon Van Etten is playing Bonnaroo and Sasquatch and the official BrooklynVegan SXSW showcase this year.
The Black Keys are playing Bonnaroo and Coachella and were on Conan O'Brien last night. Video below...

The Black Keys @ ACL 2010 (more by Tim Griffin)
Auerbach and Carney squared off against Koenig by naming the commercials that had licensed their music -- Hewlett Packard, Zales, Victoria's Secret and Tommy Hilfilger, to name a few -- before Colbert called the contest a draw and declared that both bands had "equally whored out [their] music."The Black Keys are currently up for four Grammy Awards... and for two MTVu Woodie Awards (more than any other artist).
But that claim -- even if it was said in jest -- is somewhat misleading, Carney says.
"A lot of people see a Nissan ad and they see a finished product in a record store or on iTunes and that's the face of the band," Carney says. "What they don't see is that we made [Brothers] in a cinderblock building in the middle of nowhere in Alabama, with five microphones and a guitar amp and a drum set. I don't know what that means, exactly, but I do know we didn't spend a lot of money making this record, and it's an honest way of approaching making music. And once the music is out there, when you're selling a record and selling music and people are going to do whatever they want with it, it's kind of hard to resist certain opportunities, especially in the record market now." [NPR]
The Woodies, for what it's worth, are going to take place at SXSW this year instead of in NYC as usual. Other nominees include Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Local Natives, Sleigh Bells, Two Door Cinema Club, Wavves, Das Racist, Die Antwoord, and Yelawolf. You can vote for the winners at MTV's site.
"People on the subway are staring at my scabs"
Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jim Carrey performed as "A Taste of New York" on Saturday Night Live this past weekend (on 1/8). A Taste of New York is an "authentic" band from "an area between Avenue B & Avenue C" in New York City. And though Holy Sons are from the West Coast, we have learned that the sketch/song was inspired by new Holy Sons song "A Chapter Must Be Closed" from the recent Survivalist Tales. Fred Armisen watched the video for the song and the rest is history. Compare/contrast the videos below.
Musical duo The Black Keys also played Saturday Night Live on 1/8, a few days before they appeared on the Colbert Report with Ezra. Video of both songs they played are below too.
Musical duo Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein (ex Sleater-Kinney, current Wild Flag) go way back. Their Thunderant series of videos have been making the rounds online for years, and so it's pretty awesome that they've landed a "6-part IFC Original short-based comedy series" called Portlandia which premieres on Friday, January 21, 2011 at 10:30 PM ET/PT on IFC. "Each episode's character-based shorts draw viewers into "Portlandia," the creators' dreamy and absurd rendering of Portland, Oregon."
An assortment of guest stars inhabit PORTLANDIA, including Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Sex & The City), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Selma Blair (Legally Blonde, Hellboy), Heather Graham (The Hangover), Edie McClurg (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), Kumail Nanjiani (Michael & Michael Have Issues), Jason Sudeikis (SNL, The Cleveland Show), and Gus Van Sant (Milk). Singer/songwriter Aimee Mann also guest stars, alongside James Mercer (The Shins), and local Portland musicians Jenny Conlee and Colin Meloy (The Decemberists) and Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney).Wild Flag is touring in March. Some very funny "Portlandia" videos, and everything else mentioned above, below...
