The Black Keys
The Black Keys

The Black Keys played Webster Hall last night (12/6), a celebration of their new LP El Camino out NOW (as you may have noticed from the ads on this site today). Though the sponsored-by-Southern-Comfort show was small (compared to their next one at MSG anyway), their set was not, dipping deep into their back catalog, as you already know if you were not at Lana Del Rey and one of the few who got a ticket, or one of the many who watched it online....

The set list covered the whole of Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney's journey through and out of their roots, going back all the way to "I'll Be Your Man" on their 2002 debut, The Big Come Up, and stopping off at "Your Touch" from 2006's Magic Potion. The history lessons highlighted how far the duo has come from the binary stomp and grind of their early records to the trailer-park T. Rex effect of "Everlasting Light" on 2010's Brothers and the crossed wires of glam-era David Bowie and the MC5's guitar chaos in El Camino's "Gold on the Ceiling." The inclusion of "Chop and Change," a garage-noir outtake from Brothers that ended up on the Twilight soundtrack, Eclipse, proved they have plenty of that adventure to go around.

For this show, arguably a preview of the band's 2012 U.S. arena tour, the Black Keys flipped the script of their Brothers live act. Instead of opening and closing as a duo, Auerbach and Carney spent most of the night working with their expanded lineup - Wood and bassist Gus Seyffert - and slimming down to a duo for a mini-set in the middle. In either format, the Keys still rely on simple knockout dynamics: Auerbach's spidery guitar intro (a la Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones' "Stray Cat Blues") into the climbing grind of "Girl Is on My Mind" from 2004's Rubber Factory; the primary drive of Carney's kick drum in the crunch and surge of El Camino's "Dead and Gone." -[Rolling Stone]

What did you think?

If you missed them, make sure and catch The Black Keys at the slightly larger Madison Square Garden on March 12th as part of their US tour with Arctic Monkeys. Tickets are currently on AMEX presale and go on regular sale Friday.

The Black Keys

This is what the label says:

The Black Keys' new album El Camino will be released December 5 on Nonesuch Records. Produced by Danger Mouse and The Black Keys, the 11-track album was recorded at singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound studio in the band's new hometown of Nashville during the spring of 2011.

In advance of the release, the album's first single, 'Lonely Boy', will be released on October 26. The complete track list is below; further details will be announced shortly. Pre-orders of El Camino begin today at www.theblackkeys.com and www.nonesuch.com.
The band only have European dates scheduled at the moment (listed below), but are in NYC for a private T-Mobile sponsored show TONIGHT (10/12). It's nearly impossible to get in (invite only, small space), but the show will be streaming online at 11pm on T-Mobile's Facebook.

Sasquatch

The Sasquatch! Music Festival is proud to announce that the event has completely sold out of all 100,000 tickets (25,000 per day over 4 days) in record time exactly one week from the lineup announcement.

All festival attendees are encouraged to carpool to the event and register their mileage savings at www.esurance.com/carpool to win prizes and track the positive environmental impact. People who shared rides to Sasquatch in 2010 (and registered with Zimride), saved 326,920 driving miles--the equivalent of 1.37 trips to the moon.

This year's Coachella sold out slightly quicker. This year's Bonnaroo goes on sale Saturday, February 19th at noon Eastern. The lineup was announced today.

The Walkmen are playing Bonnaroo, and their frontman is playing in Brooklyn this weekend.

The Strokes are playing Coachella and Bonnaroo and probably SXSW and Madison Square Garden on April 1st.

Sharon Van Etten is playing Bonnaroo and Sasquatch and the official BrooklynVegan SXSW showcase this year.

Black Keys

Auerbach and Carney squared off against Koenig by naming the commercials that had licensed their music -- Hewlett Packard, Zales, Victoria's Secret and Tommy Hilfilger, to name a few -- before Colbert called the contest a draw and declared that both bands had "equally whored out [their] music."

But that claim -- even if it was said in jest -- is somewhat misleading, Carney says.

"A lot of people see a Nissan ad and they see a finished product in a record store or on iTunes and that's the face of the band," Carney says. "What they don't see is that we made [Brothers] in a cinderblock building in the middle of nowhere in Alabama, with five microphones and a guitar amp and a drum set. I don't know what that means, exactly, but I do know we didn't spend a lot of money making this record, and it's an honest way of approaching making music. And once the music is out there, when you're selling a record and selling music and people are going to do whatever they want with it, it's kind of hard to resist certain opportunities, especially in the record market now." [NPR]

The Black Keys are currently up for four Grammy Awards... and for two MTVu Woodie Awards (more than any other artist).

The Woodies, for what it's worth, are going to take place at SXSW this year instead of in NYC as usual. Other nominees include Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Local Natives, Sleigh Bells, Two Door Cinema Club, Wavves, Das Racist, Die Antwoord, and Yelawolf. You can vote for the winners at MTV's site.

"People on the subway are staring at my scabs"
A Taste of New York

Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jim Carrey performed as "A Taste of New York" on Saturday Night Live this past weekend (on 1/8). A Taste of New York is an "authentic" band from "an area between Avenue B & Avenue C" in New York City. And though Holy Sons are from the West Coast, we have learned that the sketch/song was inspired by new Holy Sons song "A Chapter Must Be Closed" from the recent Survivalist Tales. Fred Armisen watched the video for the song and the rest is history. Compare/contrast the videos below.

Musical duo The Black Keys also played Saturday Night Live on 1/8, a few days before they appeared on the Colbert Report with Ezra. Video of both songs they played are below too.

Portland

Musical duo Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein (ex Sleater-Kinney, current Wild Flag) go way back. Their Thunderant series of videos have been making the rounds online for years, and so it's pretty awesome that they've landed a "6-part IFC Original short-based comedy series" called Portlandia which premieres on Friday, January 21, 2011 at 10:30 PM ET/PT on IFC. "Each episode's character-based shorts draw viewers into "Portlandia," the creators' dreamy and absurd rendering of Portland, Oregon."

An assortment of guest stars inhabit PORTLANDIA, including Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Sex & The City), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Selma Blair (Legally Blonde, Hellboy), Heather Graham (The Hangover), Edie McClurg (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), Kumail Nanjiani (Michael & Michael Have Issues), Jason Sudeikis (SNL, The Cleveland Show), and Gus Van Sant (Milk). Singer/songwriter Aimee Mann also guest stars, alongside James Mercer (The Shins), and local Portland musicians Jenny Conlee and Colin Meloy (The Decemberists) and Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney).
Wild Flag is touring in March. Some very funny "Portlandia" videos, and everything else mentioned above, below...

Continue reading "Fred Armisen inpired by Holys Sons for SNL sketch, pairs w/ Carrie Brownstein for new IFC show 'Portlandia'"

Arcade Fire

And the nominees for "Album of the Year" are:

* The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
* Recovery by Eminem
* Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
* The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga
* Teenage Dream by Katy Perry
Crazy.

Also funny: Mumford & Sons are up for Best New Artist against Justin Bieber (and Drake, Florence & The Machine, and Esperanza Spalding)

Robyn is up for Best Dance Recording against Lady Gaga (and Goldfrapp, La Roux, and Rihanna).

Arcade Fire are also nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals against Muse, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, and... Jeff Beck & Joss Stone.

The Black Keys also landed in the "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" along with... Dave Matthews.

The Black Keys and Mumford & Sons and Kings of Leon and Muse are also all in the "Best Rock Song" category.

"Best Alternative Album" category:

* The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
* Infinite Arms by Band Of Horses
* Brothers by The Black Keys
* Broken Bells by Broken Bells
* Contra by Vampire Weekend
So they give that to Arcade Fire, since Lady Gaga will probably get Album of the Year, or maybe Arcade Fire will just get screwed and they'll give it to someone on a major.

Other names that got nominated: Cee-Lo, Janelle Monae, Big Boi, John Legend & The Roots, Jay-Z, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Flight of the Conchords, Devendra Banhart (for "Best Recording Package"), Oh No Ono (ditto), Anais Mitchell (ditto), Danger Mouse, Gorillaz, and Carol Burnett. Full list at the Grammys site.

Austin City Limits

""This festival is super-cool," said Strokes singer Julian Casablancas from the stage at Austin City Limits on Friday night. "Lotta stuff." It's true: The festival, now in its ninth year, packs 130 bands onto eight outdoor stages arranged around the 350-acre Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. The lineup is a mix of huge rock acts (the Eagles headline Sunday) and big-name indie bands, plus DJs, country singers and the occasional rapper. With an expected attendance of around 70,000 a day, the festival similar in size, if not in spirit, to Lollapalooza. "Lollapalooza has that city energy. It's like the hot girl you want to take home," one organizer, Lisa Hickey, said. "ACL is more laid-back -- it's like your best friend." And unlike South By Southwest, the music and film showcase that takes over the Texas town every spring, ACL doesn't have much of a music-industry angle -- it's almost strictly for fans.

On Friday night, the packed lineup presented the crowd with a happy problem: Four big-name guitar bands -- Spoon, Sonic Youth, Vampire Weekend, and the Strokes -- all had sets starting within two hours of each other, and seeing each set in its entirety was impossible."
[Rolling Stone]

Of those big four, Tim managed to catch three, and a bit of Vampire Weekend's favorite band Phish from afar. Phish's set included a Velvet Underground and a Talking Heads cover. Full setlist at the end of this post.

Kings Go Forth pictures are HERE. The rest of the pictures from the first day of the 2010 Austin City Limits Music Festival (where Ezra Koenig joined Miike Snow on stage), continue, with a bunch of setlists (including Spoon's which points out that Eleanor Friedberger played a Fiery Furnaces song with Spoon) (video proof too), below...

The Greenhornes

After playing a free show at Mercury Lounge, Maxwell's, and ATP NY in the span of three days, The Greenhornes will circle back to NYC for an encore at Bowery Ballroom on 11/30 with Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons The Ettes. Tickets go on sale Friday 10/8 at noon. The show is one of a few select US dates and the only East Coast date (thus far) for the band following a UK tour.

Those of you planning your New Years Eve can head out to Chicago. The band will be opening for the Black Keys at the Aragon Ballroom that night and on New Years Day.

Full tour dates for The Greenhornes are below, as well as a lost set of pics from ATP NY 2010, where the band played a mid-day set on ATP's third day at Kutchers. The band also played Scion Garage Fest 2010 in Lawrence Kansas over this past weekend. Vaudeville Villain was there and wrote, "The Greenhornes had just started their set. Never heard of them. They were incredible. Stripped down, pounding garage rock."

Black Milk

Black Milk will team up with his uber-buzzy mic controller Decon label-mate Freddie Gibbs for a show at SOBs on Tuesday (August 3rd, tickets). The show will double as a record release party for Gibbs, as he readies his new EP Str8 Killa due that same day (git it) and accompanying (requisite?) mixtape, available for free download HERE. In addition, Gibbs has pounded out a new video for the lead single from Str8 Killa, "National Anthem", available below

The eight-track Gibbs EP also features a song called "Oil Money" that features guest spots by Chuck Inglish of the Cool Kids, Chip Tha Ripper, Bun B & The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. Download that track free HERE or HERE. Read more about the THREE Black Keys shows that just happened in NYC here, here, and here.

Freddie's older The Miseducation Of Freddie Gibbs Mixtape is free HERE.

"Black keys midnight show at Terminal 5 melted my face. I officially have no fuckin face!" - Joe Thompson

black keys and Lee Fields at Terminal 5

Despite playing a headlining show at Summerstage earlier in the evening, the Black Keys still managed to melt faces for 90 minutes and 22 songs at Terminal 5 last night (7/28). The SPIN/ZYNC show, the third in a series of five, was opened by The Whigs and Lee Fields and the Expressions (including some familiar Daptone faces)...

"But the show belonged to Auerbach and Carney -- even when they had help. About halfway into the set, two members of Fields' backing band came out to play bass and keyboard for a few numbers. The extra muscle made songs such as Brother's "Everlasting Light" sound a tad conventional when compared to the lean aggression that fired "I Got Mine," from 2008's Attack & Release, but the former song's creeping eighth note bassline and eerie, clanging keyboard stabs were thrilling in their own right." [SPIN]
The show also streamed online, like the National/Suckers/Kurt Vile gig happening at the same venue will tonight. More pictures from it, with the Black Keys' setlist, below...

The Morning Benders
Black Keys and Morning Benders at Summerstage

"With tonight's show, [The Black Keys] started off with the two of them, then added a few backing musicians for the new tunes. The new stuff lit a match for the night because when it's just the two of them in a venue of thousands of people, you tend to want something with a little more energy and activity.

I didn't plan on going to either gig tonight, but extra tickets were given to me. Ding dong, I'll take them. I was late getting there and arrived when Morning Benders announced their standard, "We have two songs left." Thus, I was stuck in the back. Let me tell you, I've been spoiled with my small shows, photo passes and being upfront, because standing in the back sucks. Especially at SummerStage because Rumsey Playfield slopes down to allow for drainage. DRAAAAAAAAAINAGE, ELI!" [Music Snobbery]

The Black Keys and The Morning Benders played their second show in a row at Central Park Summerstage in NYC last night (7/28), and now they're off on tour.

For the Black Keys it was their first show of the night. They played Terminal 5 later last night. All three NYC shows sold out well in advance. It's only a matter of time before they join the ranks of Phoenix and Arcade Fire as MSG headliners (they opened for Pearl Jam at the big venue in May).

Flaming Lips

Right before NYC got two Flaming Lips/Fang Island shows (Summerstage & Terminal 5) and three by the Black Keys (Summerstage, Summerstage, Terminal 5), all three bands played one show at CMAC, the Bowery Presents-booked venue near Rochester...

"Patrick Carney (drums) and Dan Auerbach (guitar/vocals) held their own through a high-energy, in-your-face performance that included favorites like "I Got Mine" off the album "Attack and Release." The duo filled the amphitheater with ear-pounding precision despite looking a little lonely on the huge stage for most of the set. The crowd responded jubilantly to the Keys' classic style and the band fed off the upbeat vibe, funneling its stripped-down sound all the way out to the lost lawn dwellers.

But The Flaming Lips, a band known for its ridiculous stage antics, was in a league of its own. The band was birthed on to the stage, emerging from a projected 30-foot vagina. Wayne Coyne, looking much like a fetus in a growing uterus, slowly stood up within a huge, plastic sphere that he called a "spaceball" and rolled his way through the pavilion on the hands of fans during the opening track, "Worm Mountain." The only word that came to mind was "epic."" [Rochester City Newspaper]

Last night, Wednesday, July 28th, the Flaming Lips followed their three NY shows with another appearance on Letterman. It was at least their fourth. Videos of all four (including "Vaseline" in 1995!) below...
