Paul Simon at Webster Hall in 2011 (more by Ryan Barkan)
City Winery founder Michael Dorf has announced this year's tribute show at Carnegie Hall to benefit NYC music education programs. (Last year was Prince, and he's done The Who, R.E.M., and others in previous years.) 2014's will be a tribute to Paul Simon on March 31 and the New York Times reports that Bob Mould, Ben Sollee, The Civil Wars' Joy Williams, Bettye LaVette, Dan Wilson,, composer Allen Toussaint and Madeleine Peyroux & Jon Herington, will be among the performers. Tickets are on sale now.
Paul Simon may or may not show up for his own tribute but you can definitely see him in NYC early that same month when his tour with Sting hits Madison Square Garden for two shows. The March 4 show is sold out but you can still get tickets for the March 6 date.
Bettye LaVette also plays NYC much sooner at Highline Ballroom on Sunday (1/12) with Stanley Clarke Trio and The Harlem String Quartet. Tickets for that show are still available.

Deafheaven at 285 Kent in July (more by Lukas Hodge)
The discerning folks over at Amazon have announced their picks for the best albums, songs and artists of 2013, and Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires of the City and Chvrches' The Bones of What You Believe filled out the top three spots on their best albums list.
A bit more of a surprise was Deafheaven coming in sixteenth overall with Sunbather and landing "Best Hard Rock & Metal" honors in both the artist and album category--Russian Circles won "Best Hard Rock & Metal" song with "1776", stealing the trifecta that was just within Deafheaven's grasp. Sixteenth-best album of the year and best hard rock and metal album of the year on a huge site like Amazon is pretty high profile for Deafheaven, the San Francisco post-black metal band that still road warriors-up for shows at small clubs. But they've been on the big stage before--to be specific, for Apple's keynote announcement for the iPhone 5c, when the cover of Sunbather graced one of the five iPhones on the projection screen behind the presenter.
Check out the top 20 best albums according to Amazon below, compare that to more old school and indie retailer Rough Trade's list, and head over to Amazon to see what else they thought was a cut above...
Jack White/The Roots
The one galvanizing main-stage performance at the Sasquatch festival this year was Jack White's weapons-grade electric guitar soloing on Saturday. Otherwise, it was by the book in the best possible sense. Thousands of people gathered peacefully and everything was on schedule. The Sasquatch Music Festival happened Memorial Day Weekend in Gorge, WA and Day 2 (Saturday, May 26) insanely packed with talent, featuring sets from Jack White, The Roots, tUnE-yArDs, Purity Ring and lots, lots more. It was so overstuffed, we're breaking Saturday's pictures into two parts. See more pics of Jack White and The Roots' Sasquatch set, plus other artists below, with more to come. Check out Day 1 photos HERE.
The festival, which ended Monday with a performance by Beck, featured dozens of live rock, rap, electronic music and comedy acts packing five stages for four days over the sunny Memorial Day weekend...
...Oakland's Tune-Yards mesmerized at the Bigfoot Stage Saturday. Leader Merrill Garbus faced the full yellow sun and belted out powerful melodies in her alto voice that seemed beamed in from African radio. She used looping pedals to blend the vocals with drums and modified ukulele, which she also played live. But her bassist and jazz horn players sent the music through the roof, chipping in on junkyard percussion -- dented pieces of metal hit with drum sticks. [Seattle Times]

"Following last year's 10th anniversary, which crushed previous attendance records and set a new mark for the speed with which tickets sold out, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2012 lineup which once again features 4 days of music.
