Cold Cave

Like The Kills (who headlined the show), Cold Cave and The Entrance band played Terminal 5 on Friday night (4/29) as part of an ongoing tour for the three bands. Pictures from the opening sets are in this post.

And like the Kills, Cold Cave have already announced more upcoming shows including another two in NYC: Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on July 12th and Bowery Ballroom on August 6th. KF tickets go on sale 5/6 at noon, and Bowery tickets probably will do something similar. All tour dates are listed below.

The Knitting Factory show is with Cult of Youth who just finished a tour with Zola Jesus at Bowery Ballroom, and whose other upcoming gigs include opening for Steve Ignorant and playing as part of the Northside Festival at Public Assembly on June 17th with Iceage, The Men, Lost Tribe... and DJ Wes from Cold Cave. Tickets are on sale for that one.

With new Cold Cave tour dates also came a new Cold Cave video for "Villains Of The Moon." Watch that with more pictures from Terminal 5 (Kills pics HERE), below...

Dungen

Tickets for ATP NY ("final lineup" just announced) and My Morning Jacket's The Tennessee Fire show at T5 on 10/18 are still on sale, but that didn't stop Dungen from scheduling a few other NYC shows. The psychedelic Swedes will pair with The Entrance Band to send Knitting Factory, and most likely Brooklyn, into a drug-fueled haze on October 14th and 15th. Tickets are up for both dates (10/14 and 10/15). Then on October 17th, the band will appear at Franks in Brooklyn (in Fort Greene?). Details are sketch-worthy, but we'll keep you posted.

After ten years in the trenches, Dungen are celebrating with a new LP, Skit I Allt (translation from Swedish: Fuck All), due on September 14 via Mexican Summer (they switched from Kemado, Mexican Summer's sister label). Dig on the new track "Marken Låg Stilla" from that LP available for download above and a video for the title track below.

The Entrance Band recently played Bonnaroo & NPR captured the entire set. Stream it.

All Dungen dates and that new video are below...

Sunburned Hand Of The Man
Sunburned Hand Of The Man

The 1st Annual Memory Burn Psych Fest is a one night affair on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 @ Glasslands in Brooklyn, NY. Inspired by such psych-minded festivals over the past few years such as the Frisco Freakout in SF, Memory Burn gathers a stylistic smattering of local heady, heavy hitters in New York's psych scene for an evening of tripped-out fun...
The inaugural Memory Burn Psych Fest is a doozy, featuring performances from Revival Times, Weird Owl, Future Hunter, The Black Hollies, White Hills, Hopewell, Golden Triangle, Psychic Ills, and Sunburned Hand of the Man. The show kicks off at 7PM and $12 gets you in the door.

Another notable psych-related event in the near future includes The Entrance Band, who will team up with The Growlers at Mercury Lounge for a show on June 12th. Tickets are on sale. The Entrance Band play Bonnaroo just two days prior.

Sunburned Hand of The Man recently contributed to a tribute LP for the fallen Jack Rose, who passed away late last year. The album, entitled Honest Strings: A Tribute To The Life And Work Of Jack Rose, is out now via Fina Music and also features contributions from Bardo Pond, MV & EE, No Neck Blues Band, Six Organs of Admittance, Spectre Folk, and many many other notables. All proceeds from the sale of the record go to the estate of Jack Rose. Pick up that record, and read more about it at the label's site.

The Memory Burn flyer and some video, including a few of Golden Triangle at Sound Fix Tuesday (5/4) is below...

Jemina Pearl @ Union Pool...
Jemina Pearl

The audience was left to wonder exactly what happened when Jemina Pearl walked off stage less than 30 minutes into her headlining set Saturday night (2/13) at Union Pool. The question wasn't the shortness itself, but the abruptness of her departure: after getting increasingly frustrated with something, she kicked the drum set, gave the one-finger salute to her band and left, to the stunned then embarrassed faces of her supporting trio. The show was really just getting started. "As long as everyone had fun, that's what matters," said the bass player sheepishly before getting a lit cigarette thrown at him by the singer, in a brief return to the stage.

They did manage to get through "I Hate People," a cover of "Band on the Run" and a handful of others (though not "Heartbeats" which one of the most enthusiastic fans requested as a not-to-be encore). It was an awkward hometown end to nearly a month of touring.

Openers Harlem were admirably sloppy and enthused (it's hard not to think of a less manic Black Lips). Their animated, banadana-ed singer/guitarist and more straight-laced drummer swapped roles halfway through the set, which brought out a different dynamic for sure - round two was cleaner with more of a focus on pointed guitar riffs and less on effusive vocals. The Austin band's second album is due this summer on Matador, and they'll be touring the West Coast for the next few weeks.

Jemina's next scheduled show/shows are SXSW. The full Ecstatic Peace SXSW showcase lineup (Thurston Moore, J Mascis & Andrew WK included), more Union Pool pictures, a video and Harlem tour dates are below...

Sonic Youth

The 'A' train is not carrying its accustomed load, up at 175th Street. Droves of downtown rock'n'rollers are arriving at the relatively underused United Palace Theatre, on the less-frequented Washington Heights section of Broadway. It's an architectural wonder, impressively elaborate even before entering. Once inside, the exotica magnifies, as the foyer is encrusted on all sides by highly detailed work that can only be described as a decorative fusion. This joint must surely be one of the city's most ornate theatres, and on a particularly grandiose scale. It's best described as a dripping melange of Moorish, Hindu, Gothic, Rococo and Coney Island motifs. A huge organ sits waiting, greeting arrivals upon entry. Upstairs, the sealed manager's office has a David Lynchian metal lozenge of a sign hanging above its door. Down the corridor (with its infinity of mirror-reflection lamps) is another shuttered room with a keyhole that reveals an empty banquet table. The Room Of Rest has a row of porcelain urinals to covet. Upon entering the loges (balcony, to ordinary mortals), the full scale of this massive space is revealed, the vast walls continuing the densely barnacled theme. Although grand, there's also a sense of faded decadence, an almost morbid aura of decay. Upstairs, though, the acoustics are reverberational in the extreme.

Nebula, inna black-metal stylee
Nebula

Call it the unofficial Tee-Pee-clusterfuck week if you want, but for nine days this August, four separate tours featuring bands on their label will pound NYC with a barrage of shows, with a few shows falling on the same day.... sigh.

First up, the psychedelic LA band Nebula have announced a US tour with The Entrance Band. That includes a stop at Santos Party House on August 22nd with Naam. Tickets are on sale. Nebula are touring to promote their Heavy Psych (the LP name and in practice), which will pounce on an unsuspecting public on July 7th via Tee Pee. Check out "Pulse" and The Dagger" from that LP, both of which are downloadable above.

The Entrance Band (an Ecstatic Peace-signed band who are sometimes just called "Entrance") are also touring with Sonic Youth even sooner. In fact they are playing United Palace in NYC with them on July 3rd (tickets are still available).

The Entrance Band is one of a few openers that are scheduled for the Sonic Youth tour which has Sonic Youth taking July 4th and 5th off. The Entrance Band aren't taking as long of a vacation though. You can catch them headline Southpaw in Brooklyn on the 5th (this Sunday) with TK Webb & the Visions. Tickets are on sale.

Meanwhile, another Tee Pee band from the westside is hitting the eastern shores within a week of Nebula's show at Santos AND have a release coming on the same day as Heavy Psych. Night Horse, who share guitarist Justin Maranga and drummer Brandon Pierce with the mighty Ancestors (not the black metal band), have scheduled a pair of NYC area dates for the second week in August. They play Pianos on August 13th with TK Webb & The Visions and Union Pool on August 16th with Tournament and Orphan. Night Horse will release the first of a three part split 7" series planned for this summer with Dirty Sweet. Look for that 7" on July 7 and check out the first track, "Good Bye Gone", available above.

Next up, Swedish doom-proto types (or is that doom-prototype types?) Graveyard are scheduled to tour the US with CKY (yes, the one with Bam Margera's brother) which includes a NYC date at Gramercy Theater on 8/13, same night as Night Horse at Pianos. Tickets are on sale.

Oh, and did I mention The Warlocks shows at Bowery Ballroom and Maxwell's on August 14th & 15th respectively? Tickets are still available (BB here, Maxwell's here).

Although Ancestors are NOT on the road in any significant fashion, they recently announced their new album, the massively epic Of Sound Mind. Featuring contributions from David Scott Stone (Unwound, Melvins) and Sera Timms (Black Math Horseman), look for Of Sound Mind to hit stores on Oct 6th via Tee Pee Records. MUCH more on this record to come... highly recommended.

Full tour dates for Nebula, Night Horse, The Entrance Band, and Graveyard are below.
