Blonde Redhead

Failure will begin their tour this week in Florida, eventually ending up in NYC for CMJ. When we last spoke, we mentioned the very cool varying openers for the tour (Hum, Torche, Trail of Dead and Local H) but that NYC's opener was not announced. Now it is, and it's also very cool.

Local indie vets Blonde Redhead will open the show, which happens October 14 at Brooklyn Bowl, which additional support from Whitney, the new band with ex-Smith Westerns and Unknown Mortal Orchestra members. Tickets are still available.

The Brooklyn Bowl show is part of the two-day FLOODfest happening at that venue, which also includes The Joy Formidable, Grace Mitchell and Oscar on 10/15 (tickets).

That same week, Blonde Redhead perform at the "Fable" show in Queens with Prince Rama. Their only other date is Santa Ana's Output Fest in November.

Failure and Blonde Redhead dates are listed, with some music, below...

Flaming Lips

Earlier this month, part of the lineup leaked for this year's series free concerts at Montauk's restaurant/hotel/vacation spot The Surf Lodge, and we've now got the full schedule. Some highlights include Mac DeMarco (5/22), Flaming Lips (6/7), Alvvays (6/14), Benjamin Booker (6/20), The Allah-las (6/27), Jon & Josiah of The Head and the Heart (6/28), Sylvan Esso (7/26), Delta Spirit (8/8), tUnE-yArDs (8/9), The Joy Formidable (9/4), and more.

As usual, the annual series hosts these free shows each weekend from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. It's not too far from NYC, and the bands make for a pretty good reason to get away to Montauk for a weekend.

A handful of the artists, including Mac DeMarco, The Flaming Lips, Alvvays, Sylvan Esso and tUnE-yArDs, also have other NYC-area appearances coming up.

Check out the full 2015 Surf Lodge concert series schedule below...

Treefort Music Festival will return for its third annual year in 2014 from March 20-23 across various venues in Downtown Boise, ID. The initial lineup was just announced and it includes Run the Jewels (who also just announced a free NYC show), Built to Spill, Breton, Saintseneca, SubRosa, Uzala, Warm Soda, The Joy Formidable, Boyfrndz and more. 4-day passes (and a few other ticket options) are on sale now.

In other Built to Spill news, someone listed "Built To Spill Perfect From Now On Studio Master Tapes 10" x 1/2" Metal Reels 15 IPS RARE" on, of all places, Etsy! The description reads:

Incredibly rare. It's not everyday you come across a piece of real music history. These are the only master tapes for this album. One of a kind, these are not recorded from album to tape. These are the original master recordings for Built To Spill's 1997 LP Perfect From Now On. These are recorded to 4 count 1/2" Ampex Gold Studio Masters. However not every track on the album appears here and vice versa. They contain the initial studio recordings without remaster, mixing, and overdubs. Pre-engineered and mixed by Warner Brothers. This is the raw studio recording. Highest grade tape and reels. These are breathtaking! If you're a fan of BTS or Northwest music, consider this, it's like finding the the "Velvet Underground" of Idaho's unreleased acetate. Thanks for looking. Check back often, we add new stock daily to our shop.

I'm selling these as a document to the making of an album, I do not claim to own the rights to the music contained on these reels and am selling the reels as found objects.

Unfortunately though, this item is now sold.

Full initial Treefort lineup below...

The Cure / Kendrick Lamar / Passion Pit
ACL Music Festival 2013 - Day 2 - 10/5/2013
ACL Music Festival 2013 - Day 2 - 10/5/2013
ACL Music Festival 2013 - Day 2 - 10/5/2013

Opening with a sluggish "Plainsong," the band - led, as always, by founder Robert Smith - scanned tentative, with a chunky and worn-looking Smith seeming particularly unhappy. Yet the Cure founder emoted the follow-up "Pictures of You," and by the time the band hit "Lullaby," the entire group was more animated. Momentum established, the Cure could do no wrong.

Loosely dividing the concert into thirds, the band spent the first part on hits both massive and missed, from the jangly "High" and moody "Lovesong" to the funky "The Walk" and brooding "Fascination Street." A buoyant "Just Like Heaven" indicated the band isn't burned out on its biggest hit yet. [Austin Chronicle]

Austin's 2013 ACL Festival kicked off on Friday (10/4), its first day of two consecutive weekends, and continued on Saturday (10/5). Day 2 gave us sets from The Cure, Kendrick Lamar, Wilco, Passion Pit, Haim and more. Pictures from the second day of the fest are in this post, and there's another set at BV Austin.

The festival's first weekend wraps up today (10/6) with sets from Atoms for Peace, The National, Phoenix, and more. Then it all happens again next week (10/11-10/13). If you haven't been keeping up with our coverage, check out pics of day 1 here and more here.

Update: Day 3 pics are up now.

Passion Pit at Bonnaroo 2013 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Passion Pit

Passion Pit, who played Camp Bisco over the weekend (7/13), have been on a tour all year, which included a huge NYC show at Madison Square Garden back in February. You may remember that the MSG show went on as planned despite the huge blizzard that hit NYC that day.

Passion Pit have just expanded their tour, and to make up for anyone who missed the MSG show because of the storm, they've scheduled "make up shows" happening in NYC on September 6 and 7 at Hudson River Park's Pier 26, right before the band plays Boston Calling. Tickets for the Pier 26 shows go on sale Friday (7/19) at noon, and discounted tickets will be offered to anyone who had purchased a ticket for their MSG show but couldn't make it. Proceeds will also go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Passion Pit's tour also includes an Atlantic City show happening on November 1 at House of Blues Atlantic City. That show, and many others on the tour, is being opened by The Joy Formidable, but no openers have been announced for the Pier 26 shows yet. Tickets for the AC show go on sale Friday (7/19) at 10 AM with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (7/17) at 10 Am and Ticketmaster/Total Rewards presales starting Thursday (7/18) at 10 AM.

All dates are listed, along with a couple videos, below...

Firefly 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

It's been crazy both in and not-in the NYC-area for festivals this past week. NYC was taken over by a very muddy Governors Ball last weekend (6/7-9), and this past weekend (6/14-16), while almost every Brooklyn venue took part in the Northside Festival, Toronto was hosting NXNE and Tennessee had Bonnaroo to name the ones we were most focused on. That's all behind us now, but those who are into festivals still have much more to look forward to this summer including another big one on the east coast this weekend.

This coming weekend, Friday, June 21-Sunday, June 23, the Firefly Music Festival is returning to Dover, Delaware's Dover International Speedway, which is only about a 3 hour drive (directions) from NYC. The festival debuted last year, and like Governors Ball, they've upped their game a bit this year. There will be a bunch of great bands across four main stages, like:

On Friday, there's sets by Django Django, Dr. Dog, Action Bronson, Foxygen, Public Enemy, Grizzly Bear, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Earl Sweatshirt (who was added to the lineup in May) and more. And besides RHCP vs Earl (who start 15 minutes apart), the conflicts that day aren't too bad.

On Saturday, there's sets by Japandroids, Jim James (who replaced Imagine Dragons, so bonus points for that), Kendrick Lamar, Alabama Shakes vs Lord Huron at 5 PM, then CHVRCHES vs Edward Sharpe, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT vs Azealia Banks, and finally Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will headline the day, plus still more.

And on the festival's final day, Sunday, you can catch Haim, Matt & Kim, Toro y Moi, Passion Pit vs The Walkmen both going on at 6:30, Vampire Weekend, and more. Plus, if you need to leave early to get home from work on Monday, you can leave before Foster the People's headlining set. Two birds, huh?

UPDATE:Both Earl Sweatshirt and The Lumineers have cancelled, but were replaced by Schoolboy Q & Ben Harper.

And in addition to the main stages, there's some smaller side stuff too, like the Red Bull Sound Select Hub Stage which features bands who have joined the Red Bull Sound Select Program. We aren't familiar with all the bands playing that one, but we suggest you stop by Saturday for NYC's Heliotropes (who, by the way, are playing a record release show in NYC on 6/18, and streaming their new record). The Skins and Oxymorrons are both on that stage too, both NYC bands who we caught when they played the Afropunk-curated RBSS show at Knitting Factory with Danny Brown.

There's also the Coffee House Stage with other smaller acts including The Spinto Band, Jenny Owen Young, Pearl & the Beard, Hey Marseilles, Selah Sue, Trails & Ways, and many more.

Last but not least, in addition to just being there as fans and covering the festival, BrooklynVegan will be producing two hours of entertainment from 1-3pm each day inside the Soundwave tent, presented by Toyota and Spinmedia, and hosted by musician & BV contributor Billy Jones. Take a look at the festival map - our stage is toward the top left next to St. Jude.

Hosted overall by one of our favorite comedians, Dave Hill, the Soundwave stage will also feature programming by SPIN (5-7 each day) and Hype Machine (3-5 each day) in addition to the BrooklynVegan stuff (1-3 each day). Stay tuned for our full stage schedule, but get there on Friday at 1pm for a live interview with Django Django and look forward to a second performance by and audience Q & A with Amanda Palmer on Sunday at 2pm. More details soon!

Meanwhile, check out the full main stages Firefly lineup and schedule at Firefly's website where you'll also find much more info if you're attending, like the festival map which is also below...
