"What about FOREIGN BORN-Person to Person!!!" - JarretP
Foreign Born

L.A. band Foreign Born will be taking Philly DFA party rockers Free Energy on tour with them this February and March. The bands roll into NYC for two shows, the first of which is March 11th at Mercury Lounge. Tickets are on sale. The second is the next night (3/12) at Knitting Factory. Tickets for that are up too.
Foreign Born's latest album, Person to Person, came out over the summer (two tracks from it are reposted above). Their new, vacationy/mock-adventure video for the summery song "Early Warnings" (it's always summer in L.A. I suppose) is posted below.
Before the tour, Free Energy will be playing other shows around NYC. They do a live set at the DFA Holiday Party happening at (Le) Poisson Rouge on Saturday, December 19th. Also at the party will be Special Disco Version (DFA's James Murphy, who produced Free Energy's forthcoming Stuck on Nothing, and Pat Mahoney), Holy Ghost, Matt Cash and Justin Chearno. Tickets ($5) are on sale. Flyer is below.
Free Energy, whose last NYC show was also a holiday party, are also playing Pianos on January 21st (tickets) and Brooklyn Bowl on Jan. 22nd (tickets).
The Juan Maclean isn't playing the DFA holiday party, and isn't playing Music Hall of Williamsburg on December 18th as originally scheduled. The Brooklyn show was cancelled after the untimely passing of Jerry Fuchs.
All tour dates, fliers and videos below...
Jerry Fuchs

"As the new millennium started gearing up, there was a obvious reason why Jerry started playing with all the DFA-affiliated bands (The Juan Maclean, !!!, etc.) as time went on: He was an invaluable monster on the drums that could recreate those motorik-like disco beats and make it sound human. Goddamn, the hair on the back of my neck stands on end when I think about it. Recent years saw him reaffirm his roots in Athens as he became the incredibly propulsive backbone to Maserati after they gave their original drummer the boot. And man, again, watching Jerry perform was always a treat. ALWAYS." [Chunklet]It's been a week since the tragic death of Jerry Fuchs. A memorial service was held at Enids in Brooklyn on Thursday. The loft building he died in, 338 Berry Street, is going about business as usual. There are many Craigslist ads for spaces there. All of them mention the freight elevator as an amenity. This is the picture of the building from one of the ads:
338 Berry

What was Jerry doing at 338 Berry at the night in question? Well, this "AccesSoiree" benefit party was happening there...

The party advertised that there would be "DJ sets by fashion darling Judi Rosen, The Juan MacLean's Nancy Wang and more from New York's finest DFA crew to name but a few". The above-quoted Chunklet obit is one of the nicest I've seen, and as it reiterates, Jerry was a large part of DFA. Chk Chk Chk wrote this on their MySpace...
thanks to everyone who has contacted us with their love and support. we could never put into words how special a person jerry was and how much we loved him. we ask that you tell all the people you care about and are thankful for that you love them. we wish we still had jerry.A member of Hot Chip got this new Jerry Fuchs memorial tattoo...

The first Juan Maclean video below (with a fake fight) explains the midi tattoo. The other video features a 16 minute live version of "Happy House" with Jerry behind the kit. Juan is DJing a benefit in San Francisco on November 20th. More details about that and both videos below...

Gerhardt Fuchs grew up playing the drums in Georgia and went on to perform with bands that toured across the country, but it was in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, that he forged his reputation as a dynamic, driving drummer widely esteemed by his peers.Jerry Fuchs, who played with groups including the Juan MacLean, Turing Machine, Holy Ghost!, !!! and Maserati, was 34. RIPAnd it was in that same neighborhood, in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge, that Mr. Fuchs, known as Jerry, fell to his death on Sunday morning [11/8] in the elevator shaft of an industrial building on Berry Street. [NYTimes]
He recently came back from a tour playing drums with Maserati, who traveled with Mono. The tour included two nights in New York and an appearance at Pop Montreal on October 1st.
Juan Maclean wrote, "Jerry was one of my best and most loyal friends. He was hands-down the best drummer I have ever played with or seen for that matter. Jerry was with me from the start of The Juan MacLean, and we had countless adventures together all over the world. He was utterly sincere and fiercely loyal. During a particularly difficult time, while backstage in a club in Chicago, Jerry told me "Juan, I will follow you to the end of the earth and I will always be there for you." That was Jerry, the greatest drummer in the world, the greatest friend you could ever have."
As the NY Post reports, "Fuchs is the second Maserati drummer to meet a tragic end. In 2005, then-drummer Mikel Gius was run down and killed as he rode his bike on a Sacramento street." Mikel Gius was in !!! too.
Maserati clips, which feature Jerry's stunning drumming in a central way, and other videos, below...

Pilooski @ the Scion Radio party @ Plan B - August 11, 2009

It's been an interesting week in dance so far. Tuesday night Pilooski was great, as expected, at the Scion party at Plan B. Unfortunately nearly everyone there was in "hang out & BS" mode instead of dancing. At any given time there was probably a maximum of 5 people dancing which was frustrating. You can lead a horse to water...I had an excellent time anyway and hopefully people will dance more when Pilooski is back here on September 26 (location tba).
Wednesday night at Le Poisson Rouge was the complete opposite. The Phenomenal Hand Clap Band opened for Friendly Fires and there was a pretty good amount of dancing going on during their set. Their sound is kind of like a blend of classic rock with hints of funk & soul which I'm not sure how I feel about yet. They were super enthusiastic and fun to watch though.
Unfortunately, immediately after their set, things started to go downhill. Set-up and sound check for Friendly Fires was over an hour and I was standing next to a very drunk & annoying girl (not to be confused with the one at Thursday's show) and matching friend. Despite the extensive set-up, when Friendly Fires finally started the sound was not great! The vocals sounded off to begin with and lead vocalist Ed McFarlane's habit of intermittently pulling the mic away from his mouth as he sings (which usually is not a problem) sounded like a cd skipping at times because the band was so loud. The band's addition of a little horn section to the mix was interesting at first, but ultimately seemed unnecessary most of the time. Removed from these couple of things everything else was typically awesome Friendly Fires. Everyone was dancing away, but I couldn't really get into it after the hour+ wait.
Hopefully things will be better this Saturday (8/15), but before we get into that...last Saturday was the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival (BEMF). This was my first time going to the festival, which is now in its second year. Heading there after Dark Disco in the Park, I arrived at the Old American Can Factory around 8 to see a decent-sized crowd hanging out in the courtyard. There was a nice set-up of food vendors in the back, opposite the main stage, a bar down a little alleyway, and a second stage indoors. Nobody was really dancing when I got there as Jupiter One's set had just ended, but within a few minutes that changed when OCD Automatic went on, playing a nice little mix of some electro favorites (like Mylo, which I haven't heard out in ages).
At this point I was still exploring the space and getting my bearings...when I went inside and saw Plant Music's Kap10Kurt was on I was really excited as I've come very close but have never actually succeeded in seeing one of his sets. Unfortunately this time was no different since he was done by the time I figured out the bar/drink tickets situation and got back to the stage.
Young Love (who I've seen before and am not a fan of) was on the main stage and I was beginning to realize that forgetting to print out the schedule of performers was not the best move. I spent most of the night scurrying inside and outside to see who was on and hit a lull pretty early on where I didn't like the acts on either stage for a while.
Thankfully around 10, Free Blood (who I had never seen before) went on. I really enjoyed the live guitar over the electronics in the background and Madeline and John have a really good dynamic.
From there things really heated up. JDH & Dave P were deejaying when Shy Child soundchecked over them pretty loudly (which I thought was really rude at first, until I realized that's how pretty much everyone was doing it the entire night). Thankfully JDH & Dave P were able to resume where they left off after Shy Child's set, bringing the packed courtyard's dancing to a frenzied pace by the time the Juan Maclean went on.
At that point I was exhausted and wasn't really looking forward to their set, since the last time I saw the Juan Maclean back in October I did not enjoy their performance at all. The only reason I stuck around was to see how the show would compare to that performance. As soon as they began I was glad I decided to stay.
From the get-go I could tell it was going to be a totally different show. All the somber, underwhelming slow disco jams were gone, and Nancy Whang wasn't straining her vocals this time. Juan and the band played track after upbeat track including newer ones like "One Day" and "Happy House" (which you can see videos of, along with the Juan Maclean tour dates here) and oldies but goodies like "Give Me Every Little Thing". The whole set was very lively & bouncy and everything sounded great (from the synths to the drums to...the theramin) as the modern disco's vibes permeated the crowd. The crowd was accordingly losing it, and it was the most wild Juan Maclean show I have ever been to. It was a great ending to BEMF (for me...the festival went on for hours more, but I was done for the night).
This weekend there is no rain in sight and there are plenty of opportunities to dance outside! Make the most of this good weather (though there are some indoor events too), starting with Saturday (8/15):
Juan BacLean @ BEMF 8/8 (Nicky Digital)

"A collaboration between Famous Friends (a promotion company) and Noise Problem (a booking agency), the second installment of BEMF--the first festival took place last summer at The Yard--seemed to be banking its success on strength in numbers. With admission at $25, 38 DJs and bands were packed onto a 12-hour bill of "emerging" artists, with each act charged with the task of taking control of the party for 30 minutes at a clip. Overstuffed bills didn't work in the '90s, and it didn't help BEMF's cause on Saturday. There was little musical fluidity (or any real connection to Brooklyn, aside from some on the lineup calling the borough home), and none of the DJs had the time to stretch out and take the crowd on a proverbial journey. While aspiring live acts need opportunities to hone their craft, some of the early live performances looked like amateur hour." [Big Shot Mag]The Juan MacLean was one of the headlining acts at the second annual Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival that happened at the Old American Can Factory on Saturday, August 8th. Check out a video of their performance below.
The Juan Maclean are in Europe for the rest of August. On Friday, December 18th, the group will play another Brooklyn show at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets go on AmEx presale on Wednesday, August 12th at noon. General sale starts Friday at noon. All tour dates and videos (including the new video for "Happy House") below...

The Field

"As with most of the Field's music, Yesterday and Today works better through headphones than in the club. You'd get too many people transfixed, just staring out into the middle distance. But that's what makes it such a powerful experience to listen to on your own. So cue up "Sequenced": let its static alternation and its basic bass and hi-hat drift through you and out across an icy landscape. It's the pulse of 2009. " [PopMatters]Hopefully you had a good time getting down Friday night. Get ready to do some more dancing tonight (Saturday, 6/19) and read on for a chance to win a pair of tickets to see Fatboy Slim at Terminal 5 next Wednesday:

The reunited Six Finger Satellite are coming back in NYC, having scheduled August 15th at Southpaw, their only date at the moment. Tickets are on sale.
6FS reunited in 2007 and released Half Control, a record originally planned prior to their break-up, the next year on Load Records. Their "newest material is still being worked on" and the band is "searching for a label to help unleash the anschluss". Until that materializes, heres some background interesting facts on the band which at one time included John Maclean (AKA The Juan Maclean) as well as a soundman named James Murphy:
Maclean and Murphy met while each were building his own recording studio around 1990. They bonded over a shared love of dance music at a time when techno carried no cachet in indie rock. "You might as well have said you listened to country music," Maclean says. When Murphy became 6FS's soundman, he built a mammoth PA system that he dubbed Death from Above, a name he also scrawled on a military-style T-shirt that he wore almost every night. Murphy and Maclean liked to think of the PA as their version of a Jamaican dancehall sound system, but with a punk kick: Murphy "would make it so punishingly, deafeningly loud that you had no choice except to deal with it head-on," Maclean recalls. Like Martin Swope in Mission of Burma a decade earlier, Murphy became a de facto fifth member of 6FS...To be clear, 6FS is/was much more than just a launching pad for DFA. Check out more on the history of the band at the world's most accurate online encyclopedia. Six Finger Satellite recently played Great Scott in Boston, MA (a review from that show here) as well as Machines With Magnets in Rhode Island. Video from R.I. is below.Unwittingly, Six Finger Satellite were sketching a new canon that the DFA would codify a decade later.... 6FS were often described as a cross between Big Black, Devo, [and] crypto-fascist German electronic duo DAF, whose music [they] openly pillaged. -[The Boston Phoenix]
The Juan Maclean is scheduled to play Webster Hall with The Field. Tickets are still available.

The Juan Maclean @ Santos Party House (more by Faith-Ann Young)

The previously NYC-less Juan MacLean/The Field tour has added a NYC date. That show will be Saturday, June 20th at Webster Hall. Tickets go on AmEx presale Wednesday, April 22nd at noon. General sale starts Friday, April 24th at noon.
The Juan MacLean just played a CD release show for their new record, The Future Will Come, (out now on DFA) at (Le) Poisson Rouge on April 17th. Before the show Juan told Impose, "Our friend Justine books the place, so we just kind of follow where she goes. I think people out of town find this hard to believe, there really aren't any good clubs here....especially not for DJing."
A remix of "One Day," off that record, is posted (again) above. There's a video for the song too. All updated Juan MacLean/Field tour dates below...

Favorite concert: Most memorable concert ever attended was Nu Shooz in the parking lot of Beaverton Mall, Ore. in 1980-something. Billy Bragg at Big Day Out last year was moving. The favorite show I ever played was at Coachella with LCD Soundsystem -- the second time. The Juan MacLean is celebrating the release of his new album The Future Will Come, out April 14th on DFA, with a live (full band) performance at Le Poisson Rouge tonight (4/17). Advanced tickets available here.Music: Thee Oh Sees from San Francisco. I listen to "Heaven" or "Las Vegas" by the Cocteau Twins and Arthur Russell's "World of Echo" every time I go running, but mostly because they're what's on my iPod Shuffle and I haven't been bothered to change it.
[Nancy Whang of the Juan Maclean talked to the NY Times]
Throbbing Gristle, who played Brooklyn Masonic Temple last night, is playing earlier tonight at the same venue. Tickets to both TG and JM would cost you a combined $52, OR you can pay $35 (before fees) for the combo by going HERE and entering the code GENESIS.
I really like the new Juan MacLean track "One Day" (video below and download the James Curd remix at the top of this post), and most of his past shows I've been to, so I'm hoping his show at Bowery Ballroom in October (which I found disappointing) was a fluke. The excellent Holy Ghost will be deejaying the LPR show, as well as Matt Cash, plus a live performance by Black Meteoric Star.
Juan begins a European tour just days after this show, followed by a US tour with the Field starting mid-May. The Field's new album, Yesterday & Today, is due out May 19 on Anti- Records. All dates, the new video and Juan MacLean cover art, below..
Felix Cartal @ Webster Hall - February 27, 2009 (Nicky Digital)

There was quite a bit going on last week, but I hardly went to any of it. I did most of my getting down at the David Byrne show Saturday night at Radio City, which I (unlike Jon Pareles) found to be a great show.
On my way home from David's show Friday night I found myself at the Studio at Webster Hall just to buy a friend a birthday drink. I caught some of Futurecop's set, but it was a bit too much, too soon after David Byrne for me to absorb any of it or make any judgment.
Fortunately I wound up sticking around and getting my ears used to hearing electronic music long enough to realize Felix Cartal was tearing it up. His set was full of bangers, many of which I hadn't heard before. One was a remix/mash-up of Daft Punk's "Oh Yeah" and "Rollin' & Scratchin'" that was sick and featured a weird little vocal periodically saying "rollin' & scratchin!". As good as Felix's set was, I was exhausted and left before he was done.
This week is brimming with good deejays and I am almost glad I won't be around to have to make any of these decisions you're going to face, specifically for Friday & Saturday night. Here's what's happening:
School of Seven Bells @ Mercury Lounge (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

The 'Oscillations' show at Le Poisson Rouge on January 16th looks pretty hot. School of Seven Bells (Ghostly, dude from Secret Machines), Free Blood (DFA/Rong Music, dude from !!!), and Juan Maclean (DFA, Special live acid set, dude from Six Finger Satellite) are all playing live. Justin Miller is DJing between sets. $10 tickets are on sale.
Fujiya and Miyagi are playing Le Poisson Rouge February 17th, but so far not with School of Seven Bells, even though the two bands are going on tour together. SOSB also have some European shows lined up with Bat For Lashes All dates below...
the Juan Maclean @ Santos Party House (more by Tim Griffin)

Like they used to do with De La Guarda, the Fuerza Bruta show in the Daryl Roth Theatre (in Union Square) sometimes hosts guest DJs. Tonight, Thursday October 30th, is The Juan Maclean. Actually it's "every Thursday this Fall". Next week is Derrick May, then David Waxman, and finally David Hollands.
These shows will feature a live DJ weaving into the action, transporting audiences with new music mixed into the show's stunning visuals. Fuerza Bruta, noted for its extraordinary aerial and aquatic feats, floods the senses in an environment of breathtaking scenes and pulsing music. DJ CONNECTION further pushes the boundaries of what a night at the theater can be."Discount tickets" are available HERE.

TJM @ Bowery Ballroom

"Dressed in a dark blazer and white pants (after Labor Day, mind you!), John MacLean looked more like a professor than a dance-rocker. Perhaps his fashion sense is a remnant from his days teaching English in New Hampshire? Following a set from Chairlift, a Brooklyn-based trio whose career received a kick-start after Apple licensed "Bruises" for an iPod commercial, their fleeting allusions to Television and Bjork were bulldozed by The Juan MacLean's dance floor pastiche and their fondness for disco, house, and techno. Though MacLean's vocals sounded a little off at times (probably due to technical problems), when he's not singing and playing keyboards, he's constantly adding hand percussion and tweaking gizmos that give his music an interesting effect. Most notably, the icy vocal of singer/keyboardist Nancy Whang (of LCD Soundsystem) is a perfect yin to MacLean's yang. Their union shined on "Give Me Every Little Thing," a throbbing, squelchy, funky number laden with Theremin. Thankfully void of needless irony, it tipped its hat to Parliament-Funkadelic. Along the way, they dropped "Happy House," the first single from their forthcoming album, The Future Will Come, and it was a definite highlight. If tonight's performance is any indication, the future for The Juan MacLean looks very bright." [BigShotMag]The Bowery Ballroom show (10/18) happened a few days before the DFA CMJ showcase at Santos that Juan also played....
The Juan Maclean came on late closing out the DFA showcase...around 12:45- 1? John/Juan the man and his trusty troupe, including Nancy Whang and ex-!!! drummer Jerry Fuchs, brought dance chaos to the cold concrete floor of Santos. He oscilalted between a smorgasbord of samplers, tambourines, and modern electronic gadgets....and tastetested a track from upcoming album, The Future Will Come. Crazed lights and lasers added to the otherworld sci-fi vibe (that and the pills that were going around)... -FaithFree Blood (featuring ex-!!!'s John Pugh) was also on the Santos bill.

Two of the bands packing venues (MGMT style) this CMJ are Passion Pit (I'm partially predicting the Annex & Pianos's future) and Chairlift (like yesterday/Tuesday at the Annex and Pianos). Chairlift are now basically done with CMJ because they leave on a tour Thursday with Yeasayer. They do play one more public show at Pianos tonight though (10/22). The pictures in this post are from the set they played on Saturday with The Juan Maclean at Bowery Ballroom (10/18). More of them below...

Chairlift played a free show at the 92YTribeca last Saturday, October 11, but if you missed that, there are still plenty of NYC chances to catch the Brooklyn three-piece in the next week.
First, this Saturday night (10/18), a Bowery gig with dance guru Juan MacLean and a Holy Ghost (DFA) DJ set (Tickets $15).
Then the band plays a packed CMJ-Tuesday (10/21) with three different showcases: After the Jump @ Pianos (5pm), NME @ the Annex (7pm) and the Deli Magazine @ the Hiro Ballroom (9pm).
The band (friends of MGMT) will then take off with Yeasayer (who previously toured with MGMT) for a bunch of October dates before taking off on their own to Europe. In December they rejoin Yeasayer in DC and then open the first of two shows Yeasayer are playing at Music Hall of Williamsburg. The date of the Brooklyn show is December 5th. Tickets are still on sale. Tickets are also on sale for the December 6th Yeasayer show. No openers are listed for that one yet
Grab and an MP3 above, and check out Chairlift's song "Bruises," off their new Kanine Records album Does You Inspire You, in an iPod commercial (btw if you haven't heard of these yet, what a fantastic, fantastic product).

Crookers at Webster Hall - June 21, 2008 (Phil Xander)

LA Riots at Hiro - June 19, 2008 (Nicky Digital)

With Crookers, Green Velvet, and many other deejays in town, I'm sure a lot of dancing went down in New York this past weekend. Regrettably I wasn't around for most of it, but managed to make it out to the Youpi party at Studio B Wednesday night. Unfortunately the party did not live up to its name. I arrived with some friends around 12 or so and Studio B was maybe one quarter full (which was probably in part due to the $18/$23 cover). I am un chien!! began just after we walked in. Their sound was more rock/guitar-based with some electronic beats in the background. Unfortunately the rock overtones were on the abrasive side and made the whole experience rather unpleasant - sort of an inferior version of the Rapture at times. The lead vocalist, David Fontao, put a lot of energy into his dance-move laden performance, but ultimately his frustration with the less than enthusiastic crowd became apparent. The highlight of the show was definitely the length - at just about 30 minutes I don't think I could've taken much more.
