Theee Bat @ Mercury Lounge

Garage rock enthusiasts had a lot to keep them busy this weekend. Not only did Norton Records celebrate at the Bell House for four nights in a row, with related shows at Maxwell's, Japanese bands The 5.6.7.8s and Theee Bat got together with The Back C.C.'s (aka The Baxx Sisis) for a wild party at Mercury Lounge on Saturday. Here are some pics from that show.

Coincidentally (if you want to call it that) funk band "Here Come the Mummies" played Gramercy Theater in NYC, Manhattan even, that same night. I call it a coincidence because every time I think about "Here Come the Mummies", I think about the original The Mummies who you may remember reunited to play some shows in 2009 including one at Southpaw with The Back C.C.'s who played the Mercury Lounge show with Theee Bat who covered The Mummies and who did so for an EXTREMELY limited 7".

The 5.6.7.8s also played the Bell House on Thursday. More pictures from Saturday below...

"Rarely has a band been so well matched to a venue as it was Wednesday night when The Mummies took over Southpaw. The club's considerable investment in rock 'n' roll--walls papered in album jackets, vintage tuck-and-roll sparkle naugahyde Plush and Kustom amplifiers behind the bar, a basement bunker bar that once housed a crackhead who occasionally raised enough green to enjoy the company of a lady friend at the most inopportune times--was quickly trumped by the trash talking, trash rocking Mummies who had the audience flinging plastic cups of beer at them before stagehands even got the curtain fully open.

In between standing on, bench pressing and dry humping his Vox Continental organ, singer Trent Ruane tore down his bandmates with some classic mumbled gripes as they remembered/learned some songs on stage: "Yeah, alright, I remember my first beer, too." "C'mon, I got a plane to catch." "Refer to your manual!" One yahoo clawed himself up out of the scrum in front of the stage to crowd surf again and again. A full beer hit a spotlight and exploded into mist. Old timers like Eric Davidson and Mick Collins, singers for the New Bomb Turks and the Dirtbombs, respectively, nodded their approval in the back." Back by popular demand, the Kings of Budget Rock™ will be pulling dubbble-trubble on June 9th 2009, at the scene of the last U.S. Mummies show (back in '91). That's right, count 'em: TWO sets. Those slave drivers at Maxwell's really know how to extract that pound of flesh. And all on account of a silly little misunderstanding about a bar tab. Fer Chrisssakes! That was 18 years ago, guys!
