As always, there's a bunch of great metal and hardcore happening in NYC, so here are some shows to tide you over while you mourn the fact that you can't make it to the Czech Republic for the Insect Warfare reunion.
Recently anointed with the title Best Mall-Metal Debut of All Time by Invisible Oranges, Killswitch Engage are releasing a new album called Incarnate. They will embark upon a huge tour that involves a 5-night NYC residency at venues that would normally be too small for these guys. So if you're at all into seeing them, this is probably the time. This will feature shows at Gramercy Theatre on 3/6, Bowery Ballroom on 3/7, Saint Vitus on 3/9, Marlin Room at Webster Hall on 3/10, and Rough Trade on 3/11. Tickets for all five shows go on sale Friday (1/22) at 10 AM at the above links.
Providence hardcore band Fucking Invincible (members of Dropdead, Daughters, among others) are playing a show at The Acheron on February 27 with V Sect, Mauler and Slav. Tickets for that are on sale now.
Grind masters Magrudergrind just announced a new, Kurt Ballou-produced album and released a single. The album is called II and the new, ripping song is called "Sacrificial Hire," and you can stream it below. In addition to playing that Decibel show in Philly, Magrudergrind have a NYC show coming up before they head out on a massive European tour. That one is also at The Acheron on February 19 with local rippers Mutilation Rites, Incendiary and Triac. Tickets for that are on sale now.
Toronto classicists Cauldron, with an excellent new album In Ruin hot off the presses, will head out on tour and swing through NYC
for a show at Saint Vitus on February 22 with support from Tower. Tickets are on sale now. Stream their LP and check out tour date below.
Since we last spoke, The Ocean have dropped off of that tour with Intronaut and North to be replaced by progsters Scale the Summit. All dates, including Marlin Room at Webster Hall on March 29 (tickets), remain the same.
Now on to the reminders. Since the last roundup, a ton of new stuff has been announced, like Tau Cross, Unearth/Ringworm, Conan/Serial Hawk, Dragged Into Sunlight/Primitive Man/Cult Leader/Churchburn, UXO/Primitive Weapons, Behemoth/Myrkur, Ghost, Cannabis Corpse, Pig Destroyer/Dropdead/Full of Hell, and Whores/Fight Amp.
What else? Oh just Horrendous, Dysrhthmia/Artificial Brain, Poison Idea/Child Bite/Iron Reagan AND Poison Idea/Child Bite/Sheer Terror, Tengger Cavalry, Rivers of Nihil Krallice/Yellow Eyes, Coffins/Noisem/Ilsa, Bell Witch/Wrekmeister Harmonies, Black Tusk, Taake/Young and In the Way/Vattnet Viskar, and Bongzilla/Black Cobra.
Think that's it? Think again. You got Abbath/High on Fire/Skeletonwitch/Tribulation, Abigail Williams/Fleshgod Apocalypse, Melvins/Napalm Death/Melt Banana, Cannibal Corpse/Obituary/Cryptopsy, Voivod/Vektor/Eight Bells, Megadeth/Suicidal Tendencies, Black Sabbath, Slayer/Testament/Carcass, AC/DC, Lamb of God/Anthrax/Deafheaven/Power Trip, and Iron Maiden.
That about does it. What did we miss?

As always, there's a ton of metal, hardcore, and more heavy music happening in NYC. We don't get a chance to post about all of it, so here's a roundup of some recently announced stuff we haven't tackled yet:
German prog-metal band The Ocean are coming over the US for some shows with prog-doom band Intronaut, and North. This will include a stop at The Marlin Room at Webster Hall on March 29. Tickets for that go on sale Friday (1/8) at 10 AM. The Ocean recently released the song "The Quiet Observer" on a split with Mono, which you can stream below, alongside tour dates.
Last time Intronaut was in NYC they were on tour with prog-death heavyweights Between the Buried and Me, who have a tour coming up with August Burns Red, The Faceless and Good Tiger. That tour opens and closes in the NYC area. It kicks off in NJ at Starland Ballroom on March 4 and winds up at Webster Hall on April 17. Tickets for NJ and NYC go on sale Friday at 10 AM, with a venue presale for Webster starting today (1/7) at 10 AM (password = live). All dates are listed below.
And if you're really a prog-metal nerd, perhaps you'd like to know that Dream Theater play Radio City on April 23 (tickets).
This weekend, local tech-death monsters Pyrrhon are playing a show at Palisades on Sunday (1/10) with Vomit Fist, Cadaveric Spasm and Replicant (tickets).
More local technical monsters will join forces when Dysrhythmia (which involves Colin Marston of Krallice and Gorguts), Artificial Brain and Zvi (Ron Varod of Kayo Dot) hit the Acheron on February 26 (tickets).
Also at The Acheron, classic San Diego hardcore band Battalion of Saints have a show coming up with Phobia and Nomads on March 15 (tickets).
Abbath (who now have a very different lineup) just put out another new track called "Ashes of the Damned," and of course are headlining the huge Decibel tour with High On Fire, Skeletonwitch and Tribulation that stops in at Webster Hall on April 12 (tickets). Stream that below.
photo: Iron Reagan at Gramercy Theatre in 2015 (more by Mathieu Bredeau)
We already mentioned that Poison Idea show at the Acheron on February 14 with Child Bite and Chud, but now that show also features the killer crossover thrash revivalists Iron Reagan (tickets). Poison Idea's Long Island show initially had Iron Reagan billed too, but they'll instead be joined by fellow hardcore legends Sheer Terror at that show (tickets). Sheer Terror have other shows too.
Now for some reminders. There's always amazing metal coming up at Saint Vitus, like Russian Circles/Wildhoney/Cloakroom, Zevious, 1349/Tombs/Full of Hell, Horrendous, Whiplash/Blood Feast/Magus Beast/Anvil Bitch, Tengger Cavalry, Rivers of Nihil Krallice/Yellow Eyes/Acme String Trio, Meek is Murder, Coffins/Noisem/Ilsa, Bell Witch/Wrekmeister Harmonies, Black Tusk/Holy Grail/Blackest, Taake/Young and In the Way/Vattnet Viskar/Trenchgrinder, Bongzilla/Black Cobra/Lo-Pan, and Bloodiest.
More? Sure. You've got Venom Inc./Necrophagia, Abigail Williams/Fleshgod Apocalypse, Melvins/Napalm Death/Melt Banana, Cannibal Corpse/Obituary/Cryptopsy/Abysmal Dawn, Voivod/Vektor/Eight Bells, Megadeth/Suicidal Tendencies/Children of Bodom/Havok, Black Sabbath, Slayer/Testament/Carcass, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and Nile.
Happy headbanging. Did we miss anything?

Black Tusk at Saint Vitus in 2013 (more by Caroline Harrison)
SXSW may be all about catching the hippest bands--check out the SXSW schedule for a lowdown on what's going on (or browse our "SXSW" tag for some highlights) -- including three BV day parties and the BV official showcase -- but there's no shortage of metal to bang your head to, either. Our metal blog, Invisible Oranges, is putting on a showcase on Thursday, March 13 at the Quantum Lounge (303 W. 5th St.) with Black Tusk, Mutoid Man (members Converge/Cave In), Kayo Dot, Yautja, Wild Throne and Venemous Maximus, and there are a number of other showcases and parties bringing heavy vibes. Here's a rundown of those events (with flyers and more details below).
On Tuesday night (3/12), Pitchfork's Show No Mercy showcase goes down at House of Vans at Mohawk (912 Red River) with Indian, Kylesa, Power Trip, Christian Mistress, Windhand and Iron Reagan outside; and Youth Code, Gnaw, Primitive Man, Psalm Zero, Sannhet and Yautja inside.
On Wednesday (3/13), it's the first of four Converse x Thrasher Death Match day parties at the Scoot Inn (1308 E 4th St) from noon to 6 across two stages with heavy representation from Earthless and The Shrine, plus some fun non-metal like Black Lips, Trash Talk (who also play the free Thursday BV party at Red 7), Cherry Glazerr and more. Free to the public.
Stereofly is also throwing a free party at Javelina Bar (69 Rainey St) with Yautja, Primitive Man, Gnarwhal and more.
There's also a not-free Heavy Metal Parking Lot day-into-night party at The Lost Well (2421 Webberville Rd) with Wino's reformed Spirit Caravan, The Shrine, Kylesa, Lazer/Wulf, Truckfighters and more. You can get advance tickets to that one.
Wednesday night, Relapse Records (who signed Iron Reagan, who do play SXSW but not this show) throws their showcase at The Dirty Dog (505 E. 6th St) with Windhand, Christian Mistress, Nothing, Obliteration, Primitive Man and Pyrrhon. You can also catch Nothing for free at the Thursday BV party at Red 7 which Trash Talk is also playing.
Not far from there, Roadhouse Management / Nuclear Blast Records will be presenting their showcase inside at Red 7 (611 E. 7th St) with Orchid, Kadavar, Scropion Child, BP Fallon & the Bandits, Mothership, Sweat Lodge and The Well. (Not metal, but outside at that same venue on the same night is our BrooklynVegan showcase. And hey, there are some heavier bands like Touche Amore and Frameworks on the bill.)
Also on Wednesday night, you can catch Wrekmeister Harmonies at Remedy (209B W. 5th St) with a non-metal lineup of Sean Nicholas Savage, Audacity, Tyvek and more.
Thursday (3/13), the free Converse x Thrasher Death Match parties continue with Windhand, Nothing and not exactly metal (not that Nothing is really metal either), but certainly loud bands Fucked Up, Destruction Unit, together PANGEA and Dirty Fences.
Then at night, it's our previously mentioned Invisible Oranges showcase at the Quantum Lounge with Black Tusk, Mutoid Man, Kayo Dot, Yautja, Wild Throne and Venemous Maximus.
We do of course hope you come, but you can also catch Scale the Summit, The Ocean, Rivers of Nihil, Felix Martin, Vattnet Viskar, The Atlas Moth and Silver Snakes at the Metal Injection showcase at the Dirty Dog (505 E. 6th St).
It's the free Converse x Thrasher Death Match parties again on Friday (3/14) with the recently reunited NYHC band Judge, the recently reunited '80s-era SST vets Bl'ast, plus quality newer bands like Kylesa, Power Trip, Black Tusk, Sannhet, Lecherous Gaze, Iron Reagan, Southern Lord-signed LA band Obliterations (not to be confused with Relapse-signed Norwegian band Obliteration), Youth Code and more.
During the day on Friday, New England Metal & Hardcore Fest also has a free party at G Pen Annex (corner of 6th and Red River) with Xibalba, Alpha & Omega, Comeback Kid, Backtrack, Counterparts, Downpresser and more.
That night, MetalSucks puts on their showcase at The Dirty Dog (505 E. 6th St), headlined by Animals as Leaders, and also featuring sets by After the Burial, Ringworm, Iron Reagan, Mutoid Man, Whores and East of the Wall.
The last day of the free Converse x Thrasher Death Match parties happens on Saturday (3/15), and though there's no metal at all on this one, you can still rage to Perfect Pussy and Diarrhea Planet.
Then, Saturday night, Tone Deaf Touring's showcase is at Red Eyed Fly (715 Red River) with Spirit Caravan, Iron Reagan, King Parrot, Vattnet Viskar, Lazer/Wulf, Pilgrim and Vaporizer.
And if you've got a badge, you can check out some of the metal panels during the day, including From Riffs to Bits with James Williamson (The Stooges) and Buzz Osborne (Melvins) on Friday at 12:30 PM, and Has Metal Lost Its Edge? with Brandon Stosuy (Pitchfork), Chris Gigg (Woe), Emilie Friedlander (The Fader), former BrooklynVegan contributor Fred Pessaro (Noisey), and Kim Kelly (Pitchfork) on Thursday at 3:30 PM.
That's a good amount of choices of the heavy persuasion for this year's SXSW, but if you're trying to narrow down the things you want to catch, we've put together a list of 11 metal bands we're looking forward to seeing. Check out that list (in alphabetical order) and along with flyers and set times for the above-mentioned shows, below...

The Atlas Moth at Irving Plaza, 2013 (more by Fred Pessaro)
Double-dip of good news for fans of Chicago's The Atlas Moth today. First, they'll be touring North America along with The Ocean, Scale the Summit, and Silver Snakes from the end of February through the beginning of April, including SXSW, a stop at South By So What? Fest in Grand Prairie, TX on March 14, and an NYC stop at the Studio @ Webster Hall on March 29. Tix aren't on sale yet, but keep an eye out.
Second, they'll be releasing the follow-up to 2011's critically acclaimed An Ache for the Distance in June. The new album is titled The Old Believer. From the official press release:
THE ATLAS MOTH are going to embark on a massive North American tour this spring (alongside The Ocean, Scale The Summit, and Silver Snakes) to prelude their upcoming glorious new album "The Old Believer" which will be slated to be released this June. On this tour you can expect The Atlas Moth to play a decent amount of new music from "The Old Believer", which we can assure you will be one of 2014′s milestone albums in heavy music. All we can currently say about "The Old Believer" is simply, expect to be blown away. The new album is leveling and will easily be recognized as the band's best work to date. All Atlas Moth dates are listed below...
The 2014 SXSW Festival is coming up soon -- March 11 - 16 in Austin, Texas -- and they've just announced the third round of showcasing bands which is a massive update. That includes Mary Timony's Ex Hex (who we just speculated about), Dum Dum Girls, Natural Child, Ratking, Buffalo Daughter, Action Bronson, Perfect Pussy, Nothing, Windhand, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, Vic Mensa, Deniro Farrar, Roosevelt, Pure Bathing Culture and a whole lot more. Full list of third round bands is listed below.
Dillinger Escape Plan at Terminal 5 (more by Greg Cristman)
Good news, bad news, good news. Let's start with the bad and then go to the good.
The RSVP for the Dillinger Escape Plan show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 27 with The Faceless and Royal Thunder has run dry. That said, we have a pair to giveaway to a lucky individual, details on how to get into this Converse Rubber Tracks event are below.
In addition, DEP has announced that they will headline the Summer Slaughter festival for 2013, snagging support from Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Revocation, AEON, Rings of Saturn and Thy Art is Murder. Though dates as a whole have yet to be revealed, look for that lineup to play House of Blues in Los Angeles on July 20 and Best Buy Theater in NYC on August 7. Tickets for the latter go on sale April 19 at noon.
Contest details and song streams are below.
Leviathan's True Traitor True Whore
Leviathan's True Traitor True Whore was hands down my most anticipated release of this year, especially considering my reverence for his last LP Massive Conspiracy Against All Life. True Traitor True Whore is Jef Whitehead's personal statement toward the recent charges brought upon him, according to his interview in Pitchfork, and it is also one of his most daring and overtly "rock" leaning records yet. TTTW is one of my favorite sort of records, opening itself up more and more with repeated listening, and is definitely another notch in his already storied career as an outsider artist. Stream three Leviathan tracks below, which previously posted at Pitchfork (x2) and Invisible Oranges, and get your copy via Profound Lore.
The same night that Torche and Part Chimp attack Mercury Lounge (11/9), Exhumed will team with Goatwhore and Havok to play Europa. Tickets are still available to both Europa and Merc, but I have a pair of tickets available for giveaway for the Europa show. Head below for more details on how you can win. The Torche/Part Chimp split, which we previewed recently, is currently streaming in full at Spin.
And last but not least, The Ocean have added a show at Saint Vitus on 11/8 with Family, Alekhine's Gun, and The Binary Code. All US dates and some in their home base of the EU, are below.
More details on how to win those Exhumed tickets, an incredible Neurosis video and more suggested NYC shows are below.
Flourishing @ Public Assembly
Flourishing hasn't existed quite as long as Wetnurse, but Wetnurse/Flourishing guitarist Garett Bussanick has already cranked out a pair of Flourishing releases in as many years. The second release for the band he also sings for is due on August 2nd via The Path Less Traveled Records. The Sum Of All Fossils features eight tracks of atonal eclectic guitar wizardry that crosses barriers between grind, death metal, prog, and post-hardcore. Check out the lead track from the LP, "By Which We're Cemented", streaming below for the first time.
Flourishing will team up with Humanity Falls to play Port 41 in NYC on July 10th as part of a larger tour for Humanity Falls and their touring partners The Leviathan's Mandible. All tour dates are below along with a new Humanity Falls track and a stream of their 2010 LP Ordaining The Apocalypse.
Humanity Falls will link up with the the Ash Borer/Ruin Lust tour at The Meatlocker in NJ on 7/12. That's one day after Ash Borer play NYC for the first time at Tommy's Tavern (not at Semi-Legit as previously announced. the show was moved). July 16th at Acheron is still on, and with support from ITHI.
Back on 4/13 while Floor was blasting down the walls and Hawks were trying to keep their pants on at Music Hall of Williamsburg, The Ocean were playing with the always impressive East of The Wall and Flourishing at Public Assembly next door. A set of belated pictures from Public Assembly are in this post. They continue, along with album details, streams, and tour dates, below...
The Ocean in Karlsruhe, Stadtmitte (photo by Michael Gebhardt)
The Ocean released their latest LP Heliocentric last year, and will head out on tour in April of this year. They play a rare show in NYC, their first since touring with Kylesa, Withered, and Lair of The Minotaur in 2008, at Public Assembly on April 13th with East of The Wall & Flourishing .
The NYC date is one of three headlining dates for the band before they head out on tour with Job For A Cowboy, Between The Buried & Me & Cephalic Carnage. That trek begins at Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale, NY on 4/15 (tickets), and swings through New England Metal & Hardcore Fest on 4/16. There the band will share a bill their old tour-mates Withered, who will loop back to NYC on on their tour with Krallice, Ipsissimus, & Cleric.

Memorial Day is a day of rememberance..... a day to remember that every band on every bill at every show should be worth every minute of your time. Monday's show at the Knitting Factory in NYC (tonight - May 26) is one of those rare heavy shows, featuring co-headliners The Ocean and Kylesa, as well Lair Of The Minotaur and Withered. Tickets are still available.
Withered will open the show, touring to road-test some blackened crusty weight from their new Prosthetic debut Folie Circulaire, their first since the critically acclaimed 2005 LP Memento Mori. The Hidden Hand, Place Of Skulls, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and the aforementioned Shrinebuilder all have had one thing in common, the stamp of quality by doom legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Now Southern Lord brings word of "Punctuated Equilibrium", aka the "Wino" solo record! Backed by skinsman extraordinaire Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch) and Jon Blank (Rez n) on bass, the new record will be tracked by producer (and legend in his own right) J Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, etc).
Fresh off of the right & left hook known as "Sleepwell Deconstructor" and "Seance Prime", hardcore punkers Trap Them will be bobbin' & weavin' through Europe and the east & west coasts through the end of April, including a date at the Charleston on March 12th and another at The Knit on June 16th. Look for them to support the massive multi-instrument collective The Ocean and grind pioneers Extreme Noise Terror in Europe. D-Beat kings Tragedy (ex-His Hero Is Gone) have added a May 2nd show at the Knitting Factory with Japanese hardcore band Systematic Death & Disnihil. Tickets are on sale. Definitely highly reccommended.....
