DOWNLOAD: The Orb & Lee 'Scratch' Perry - FACT mix (MP3)

Subatomic Sound is presenting the Dub Champions Festival, which goes down in NYC from September 21 to 24 across multiple venues. It includes the previously discussed show from dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg on September 23 and the previously discussed show from Hyperdub label head Kode9 at Deep Space on September 24 with Appleblim and Francois K. Tickets for the Lee "Scratch" Perry show and tickets for the Kode9 show are still available.
The fest also includes a show from Scientist & Roots Radics at BB King's on September 21 with Johnny Osbourne and Subatomic Sound System (tickets). Additional shows are TBA and you can check the festival's website for updates.
Meanwhile, Lee "Scratch" Perry just released an album with electronic music group The Orb called THe Orbserver in the Starhouse. You can stream that album in its entirety HERE and download a FACT mix that Lee and The Orb made together in advance of the album above.
In other news, Lee was just interviewed by Tom Hasson for The Quietus, who admitted after interviewing him that "it was like herding marmalade." Here's an excerpt:
With getting a straight answer proving to be difficult, I ask him if there's anything else he'd like to add before our conversation ends. "I wish to let the world know who I am," he says. Two videos from The Orb & Lee "Scratch" Perry's album are below...And who are you?
"I am not a snake. I have no respect for snake. I have no respect for sin. I have no respect for ache. I have no respect for sin. I have no respect for mad people. I have no respect for people who worship sin. And I have no respect for ache. No respect for pain. No respect for train. No respect for airplane."

"Andy Hughes, electronic music producer/DJ who was born 11th November 1965 and, and who lived and grew up in Harrow, Middlesex, tragically passed away on Friday 12th June 2009 after a short illness.Andy was not a current member of the Orb, and it's not clear if his sickness was related to the recent tour postponement. He passed away at the Liver Intensive Therapy Unit in Kings College Hospital in London.Andy was a genius who gave so much inspiration and passion to all with his incredible work. He was loved by many aficionados of the trance/ambient genre, but will be especially remembered for his work with Alex Paterson and The Orb, most notably the album Orblivion and single Toxygene, which reached number 4 in the UK charts in 1997. Together with his musical partners Alex Patterson and former members Kris Weston, Simon Phillips and Thomas Fehlmann together with Nick Burton of Westworld fame. Andy created electronic and ambient/techno/house/dub masterpieces. These took him across the globe where he played to masses of fans in countries including the USA, Japan and Canada as well as a sell out concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1998." "Due to personal reasons, the upcoming tour for The Orb will be postponed. All within the camp are looking forward to making their long anticipated return to the US and plan to deliver nothing less than an experience their fans deserve. With a new album on the horizon, The Orb hope to provide newly rescheduled dates as soon as possible and are excited about what is to come."The Orb also cancelled their NYC show in 2006. They did make it to Coachella earlier this year though (thx Corey).

The Orb @ Coachella 2009

"Four men/[The Orb] took the stage and though I couldn't tell you who was what, I could tell exactly who was Alex Paterson (essentially the one man Orb). I have very few albums of The Orb, and nothing very new, but I was happy to have their music wash over me as I stood there. Years have passed [since 1991's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld] but their effect still hasn't changed. It was a nice change to have something soothe your ears rather than assault." [Hoofhearted]The review references the show The Orb just played at Coachella. That's also where the pictures and videos in this post come from.
The Orb have more shows scheduled throughout the summer, and the group hits North America again in June and July. That trip includes two nights in NYC with Orchard Lounge. The dates are Friday, July 10th at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and Saturday, July 11th at the Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for both Friday and Saturday go on sale at Wednesday, April 25th at noon.
The Orb were last supposed to play NYC in 2006, but the show was cancelled like on the day of the show.

Outdoor music fest fun...Woodstock '94

Tickets for the Austin City Limits festival - happening this year on October 2nd-4th in Austin's Zilker Park - go on sale today (Tuesday, April 7th) at 11am EST. That sale happens in advance of the fest's official lineup announcement, scheduled for April 28th.
Calgary festival Sled Island hasn't announced its lineup either. But Sled Island does have a pre-fest fundraiser planned for Saturday April 11th (tickets on sale). Headlining that show at Calgary's Royal Canadian Legion will be 2008 fest performer Fucked Up (video below). Sled Island itself takes place June 25th-28th. Curating this year's festivities will be Colin Newman from Wire (who also played Sled Island '08).
Camp Bisco, a three-night fest headlined by The Disco Biscuits, is happening on July 16th-18th in Mariaville, NY. The artists playing include Nas, Chromeo, The Orb, Dr. Dog and more (full lineup below). Tickets are on sale now.
Monolith Festival is happening again this year in September at Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorodo. No acts or dates have been announced yet - but last year's lineup was pretty stellar with TV on the Radio, Justice, Band of Horses, and more playing.
Merge Records is running its own 20th-anniversary festival, XX Merge, on July 22nd-26th in North Carolina. The lineup has been partially announced - with acts like Superchunk, Spoon, Conor Oberst, and M. Ward confirmed. Five-day passes go on sale Wednesday, April 8th at 10am.
Glastonbury sold out its last batch of tickets this week. The UK festival, happening June 26th-28th, has confirmed acts that include Lily Allen, Fleet Foxes, Neil Young, Blur, Bruce Springsteen, Emiliana Torrini, Doves, Franz Ferdinand, The Ting Tings, and Echo And The Bunnymen.
Other previously reported summer fests include:
Coachella in Indio, CA, on April 17th-19th. Tickets on sale.
Sasquatch in Quincy, WA on May 23rd-25th. Tickets on sale.

Bonnaroo is happening too, from June 11th-14th in Manchester, TN.
Pitchfork Festival is taking place July 17th-19th in Chicago's Union Park. The fest recently added The Flaming Lips to its already announced lineup. Tickets are on sale now.
The Flaming Lips will also be co-curating and headlining one night of ATP NY, September 11th-13th in NY's Catskills. Tickets for that are still on sale.
All Points West July 31-Aug 2nd in Jersey City. Tickets on sale
Lollapalooza on August 7th-9th in Chicago, IL. Tickets (and VIP passes) are on sale now. There have been some rumored bands, but the official lineup comes out April 21st.
Bumbershoot in Seattle on September 5th-7th. Three-day passes are on sale now.
There are more confirmed festivals, but I think that's enough for this post. In the unconfirmed department, Woodstock '09 is currently shoping for a venue.

My Bloody Valentine @ Roseland in 2008 (more)

"We are very excited to confirm 7 more artists for the 2009 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival [April 17-19]. These include: The Chemical Brothers (DJ Set), Etienne De Crecy, The Orb, The Murder City Devils, Devendra Banhart, Busy P and Plump DJs."Besides that recent electro-heavy update, the Coachella line-up already includes reunited industrial band Throbbing Gristle, My Bloody Valentine, and many more (but not Amy Winehouse).
In addition to the Coachella date, Throbbing Gristle is playing a few more US shows, two NYC dates included: a sold-out April 16th show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple, and an April 28th gig at the same venue. Tickets for the second are on sale today (3/16) at noon. The first show (possibly both) will be a two-set evening, with TG first playing a live soundtrack to the film "In The Shadow Of The Sun" followed by a "set of material from across Throbbing Gristle's history." Opening on April 28th are Alan Vega (Suicide) and Emeralds.
My Bloody Valentine have also announced a few dates around their appearance at Coachella, though nothing in NYC yet. All of those dates, and a Throbbing Gristle live video, below...
THE ORB @ 9:30 IN DC | MARCH 31, 2006 (cred)

NOTE: Tonight's Orb show @ Avalon is cancelled (not an April Fool's joke). It's pretty unfortunate - it's not everyday that the Orb comes to town. If you know anything about a new venue, leave it in the comments. So far all future concerts at Avalon are still on, and the club's website claims they'll be back in business by next weekend. If it's house music you want, The Velvet List suggests Pacha instead.
SPRIT, AVALON, SPEED, SPLASH, DEEP, VIEW BAR & STEEL GYM RAIDED
"Guess last night wasn't the best night in Gotham's Clubland, eh? As the culmination of a nine-month NYPD narcotics investigation it seems the city closed seven Manhattan nightclubs, completely shutting down five of them." [Gothamist]
(actually it was 6 nightclubs and a gym that has DJs I think)

FROM THE CLUBPLANET MESSAGE BOARD:
This is really sad and messed up!
Ironic that most of these clubs cater to a gay clientele
1) club speed - "Area 10018" fridays happens to be the gay night
2) splash - popular gay bar & dance club
3) view bar - tiny little gay bar on 8th ave, you can see right into the whole bar from the street...
4) club deep - "Krash" fridays are gay night
5) steel gym - very gay gym in chelsea, has popular gay house dj's spinning
6 & 7) Avalon, Spirit
these two clubs are not particularly gay except they both share gay powerhouse promoter John Blair as a managing partner...
Avalon - has no current gay night. Only connection is that John Blair used to be the managing partner before leaving for Spirit. Supposed drug sales in the building. Ha. There would have to be some one in the building in order for anyone to sell anything.
Spirit: Not gay on fridays, but John Blair is one of the managing partners, who also does a gay sunday night party there.
Spirit is the only club I am not surprised to hear it was shut down, as it's run pretty sloppy and they seem to always have problems with underage drinking, fights, etc.
**above text is a quote from the CLUBPLANET MESSAGE BOARD**

Spirit also says they'll be back open by April 6th. The Superbowl of Hardcore should not be affected.
