A Murray Little Christmas (CRED)

Christmas is just four days away. That means very few people are working, there are a lot less people in the city, and that this long weekend should be full of holiday shows like A Twisted Christmas, Heeb Storytelling at Joe's Pub, and Heebonism @ Knitting Factory. What else can you recommend?

1.) National, "Boxer"
This album really snuck up on me. At first I was like, "Ah..whatever", then I was like, "Holy Shit, these guys are geniuses!"
2.) Kanye West "Graduation"
I probably listened to Kanye more thn the National but I just wanted to put him as my number 2 to piss him off, he's funny when he's angry.
3.) Radiohead, "In Rainbows"
Undisputed Awesomness!
4.) The Arcade Fire, "Neon Bible"
It's downright unamerican not to mention this Canadian band as one of your favorite albums of the year. I love their beards.
5.) Black Lips, "Good Bad Not Evil"
Great album. I saw them live this year, I was disappointed when they didn't literally burn Bowery Ballroom to the ground. I thought they were showmen.

The Pipettes, now in color, NYC - Nov 12, 2007 (CRED)

An excellent show by The Pipettes on Monday night. It was really fun to see the girls (Rosay, Gwenno and RiotBecki) shimmy and shake and dance and sing and do their thing. At times, I felt I was back in a Brighton disco 18 years ago, and that was altogether not a bad thing (for the record, it was a shandy I had in my dream). [Waved Rumor]Learn to dance like the Pipettes....

The Pipettes @ Highline Ballroom, NYC - June 5, 2007 (CRED)

a review by Nick Greto
I went to see the Pipettes at the new Highline Ballroom in NYC Tuesday night (June 5, 2007). I expected a polished, very modern, and sleek concert hall. That was exactly what I got - the ballroom was stacked with colorful lights, shiny tables and just newness all about.Earlier that night the girls played a free show in a store....My Pipettes expectations were very low. Prior to the show my thoughts on the band were sort of, "yea, retro, doo-wop thing with a sexy twist, a la Amy Winehouse, but ultimately boring songs".
I was way off base on that one.
I arrived around 9:45 pm, and the very talented opening act Smoosh (how old are those girls anyway?) was nearly halfway through their set. I was certain that we would have to wait for another act before the Pipettes took the stage - I expected to be very tired and non-productive at work the next day. Surprisingly, the Pipettes took the stage at 10:30 on the nose (their scheduled time).
I was drawn in immediately. In front of me stood three beautiful ladies with dreamy voices, dressed in polka dotted uniforms. Moments later it was evident that they also knew how to have fun, and more importantly - they knew how to make the crowd have fun.
They blasted through much of their material rapidly (most of the songs are under 3 minutes long). They joked about their "two favorite things". "Love" was the first, and they let us use our imagination to come up with the second. Their songs are danceable and catchy. They danced, and I danced. Even as I write this the songs are still stuck in my head.
Then in no time, the show was over. They closed the encore with "We are the Pippetes", and I couldn't help but feel a bit broken-hearted - but like any relationship that ends that way, I was very glad to have been involved at all
The Pipettes @ Other Music, NYC - June 5, 2007 (CRED)

The Pipettes are playing Highline Ballroom in NYC on June 5th. Tickets are on sale. Daniel Johnston's May 16th show at the Highline Ballroom is sold out, but tickets are now on sale for a second show on May 15th at Warsaw in Brooklyn.
Last time the Pipettes were visiting the States, they got to meet Perez Hilton.

According to a news item on their website, the Pipettes were very honored to be written about by Perez:
Also were honored with a mention on PerezHilton.com! [The Pipettes' official website]...though their MySpace blog entry is a little more cynical:
The girls met Perez Hilton, whom I've heard a lot about, though I think the girls were less overwhelmed by his presence than our manager and tour manager, he seemed a really cool guy though, great pink hair. [The Pipettes' MySpace]I wonder if Perez would ever want to hang out with Daniel Johnston.

They could talk about if Daniel meant what he said or not.
