Lollapalooza Day 2 - 8/3/2013

When last seen, at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park last year, Kendrick Lamar was still a relative unknown except to hip-hop connoisseurs. His set came off as hazy and introspective, with a curious Lady Gaga hanging on every word from the wings. But now he emerges with newfound swagger -- even without Gaga in the house -- smoke machines at his feet and a full band at his back. His 2012 album, "good kid, m.A.A.d. city," puts a new and brilliantly introspective take on West Coast gangsta rap, a look at its tropes and pressures from the inside out. So even as he leads the crowd in some explicit choruses, he throws out questions and lays out his conflicts in the verses. "This will be on the Internet," he announces. Ya think? The audience cheers him like a rock star, even when he stands on stage with arms folded. But he doesn't just bask in the glow. He tries to put it in context, much in the way his rhymes try to make sense of hip-hop and the culture that birthed it. "You can't classify what we got going on," he says to the fans. "This is life." [Chicago Tribune]
Lollapalooza 2013 continued yesterday (8/3) in Chicago's Grant Park, with nicer weather than day 1, and sets from eight stages worth of artists, including The Postal Service, Kendrick Lamar, Haim, Foals, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Local Natives and more. Pictures of those (and other) artists are in this post, and we've got a second set of Saturday pics HERE on the way with more artists. But not any of Death Grips.

We at BrooklynVegan are also at the festival, hosting a portion of the Soundwave Tent.

The festival wraps up today (8/4) (check out our Sunday preview) with sets from Cat Power, Phoenix, The Cure, Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Alt-J, Baroness, Angel Haze, and more. If you're not at the festival, you can stream it live at Lollapalooza.com.

Check out day 1 pics and more day 1 pics.

Update: Day 3 pics (part 1) and day 3 pics (part 2) are up now too.

Lollapalooza 2013 happens this weekend (August 2 - 4) in Chicago's Grant Park (and some of it will stream online). We'll be there watching bands on all the stages and hosting them in the Soundwave Tent every day from 1 PM - 3 PM (and from 12:40 on Saturday).

The Lolla line-up is pretty great this year, full of big names with a lot of choices (and the occasional tough decision to be made between competing stages). Here are thirteen bands (plus a few more) we don't want to miss....

The Postal Service

With a decade of perspective, the Postal Service didn't change the songs much. Along with Mr. Gibbard, Mr. Tamborello and Ms. Lewis, the touring Postal Service now also includes Laura Burhenn from the Mynabirds on keyboards and vocal harmonies. They played the group's repertory with the songs' old proportions, and probably their original electronic parts, largely intact. The set also included "This Is the Dream of Evan and Chan," the 2001 song from Dntel that featured Mr. Gibbard and led to the formation of the Postal Service; its staticky intro was replaced with something more melodic and arena-friendly. A backdrop of geometric lights could look like level meters in a recording studio or dance-club strobes. - [NY Times]
The Postal Service's Give Up 10th Anniversary tour finally hit NYC over the weekend for two shows at Barclays Center. At Friday's (6/14) sold-out show, they played the entirety of their only album, Give Up, in addition to a Dntel song and a cover of Beat Happening's "Our Secret." Pictures from the show (though unfortunately none of openers Mates of State) and the setlist are in this post. They played again on Saturday (6/15) with Ra Ra Riot opening.

The Postal Service @ Fox Theater, 4/15/2013
Postal Service

The band were definitely one of the highlights of Coachella and seemed to be gathering steam as they had the entire crowd in the palm of their hand with the electronic pulses of "The District Sleeps Alone." The entire audience knew the album so well that it was difficult to find a spot on the floor where someone wasn't singing along.

The setlist was surgically selected as "We Will Become Silhouettes" kept the energy level high as Ben Gibbard ran back to a drum kit for the final minutes of the song. "Sleeping In" was flawless as Jimmy Tamborello replicated the hushed vocals behind his keyboard and laptop station. Laura Burhenn delicately tapped on her xylophone for the twinkly intro of "Turn Around" as Jenny Lewis intertwined her honey soaked vocals.

Throughout the evening, the energy in the room was palpable. During "Nothing Better," the crowd erupted when Lewis sang the female counterpoint section of the song as Lewis and Gibbard danced together in the center of the stage. The spacey vibe of "Recycled Air" was replicated beautifully with Tamborello adding some vocoder processed vocals at the ending of the song. - [OC Weekly]

Fresh off weekend 1 of Coachella 2013, the newly-reunited Postal Service (with help from Jenny Lewis) played Pomona, CA's Fox Theater on Monday (4/15) with openers Baths. Their setlist was identical to what they played in Reno last week.

Ben and Jimmy and Jenny play Coachella again this weekend and will be in NYC for two shows at Barclays Center in June. More pictures from Fox Theater are below.

Check out a video of their full set, along with more pictures from the show and the setlist below.

We mentioned that Blur and The Stone Roses are reuniting for Coachella 2013, and as usual there some other interesting reunions at the festival too.

Violent Femmes, who called it quits in 2009, appeared on the lineup announcement. Unlike Blur or The Stone Roses, this is the first we're hearing about them getting back together, so hopefully we'll get some more shows from them. They last played NYC in 2007. Some classic Violent Femmes videos are below.

As promised, The Postal Service are in fact confirmed for Coachella. They recently confirmed their 2013 reunion, and are also part of the Primavera Sound lineup.

It wasn't even two full years ago that Nick Cave said he was done with his Grinderman project for a while, and we know that The Bad Seeds are back this year (and also playing Coachella), but he's got Grinderman on the lineup too. Grinderman plays day 1 and the Bad Seeds play day 3.

One of Ian Svenonius' many bands, The Make-Up, reunited last year and played ATP NYC, and they're also included on this year's Coachella lineup. Meanwhile, you can catch Ian in NYC on his book tour tonight (1/25) at LPR and Monday (1/28) at WORD Bookstore.

New Order (without Peter Hook) made their live return last year, and after releasing their "lost" album, Lost Sirens, this year, they were announced for Coachella as well. The way things have been going, we probably can't count on Hook being there, but like Ian Svenonius, you can catch him in NYC on Monday (1/28) for his book talk.

Fellow new wave icons Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (aka OMD) returned in 2010 and they're promising a new album out on April 9, just before Coachella begins. They've also talked about a North American tour, which presumably will be announced soon with dates surrounding the festival.

Descendents have been back for a little while at this point, but a reunion show from them is always exciting, and this year's Coachella should be no exception.

Dead Can Dance have been back for a bit too, having released a new album, Anastasis, and gone on a tour last year, and they'll be at Coachella this year as well. They're also playing Primavera Sound and just launched a video competition.

Two-Tone legends The Selector (they shared a side of the label's first-ever 7") will play as well. The band have reformed a few times over the years, with different members offer rival versions of the band. Singer Pauline Black and Gaps Hendrickson feature in the line-up coming to Coachella.

And maybe most surprsingly on this list of Coachella reunions is The Three O'Clock who were intregral in the '80s "paisley underground" scene in Los Angeles. Fronted by bassist Michael Querico, the band made 1985's cult classic Arrive Without Traveling, ended up signed to Prince's Paisley Park records where they made one album before breaking up in 1988.

LA hip hop collective Jurassic 5 are also reuniting for Coachella. More on that and other hip hop at this year's festival coming later.

Violent Femmes videos below...
