Yo La Tengo played their first of eight sold out Hanukkah shows at Maxwell's last night (12/8) with opening sets by a reunited The Raybeats and comedian Emo Philips, and the mixtape made by Tom Scharpling (who was part of his own guest-filled event one night earlier). It was a benefit for the Fund to Rebuild Hoboken.

YLT took to their blog to recap the show, and of the openers, they wrote:

We've been seeing the Raybeats for so long that we remember when they were being billed as the Ex-Contortions (we also recall rotary phones, no-security airline check-in . . . stories? oh do we have stories!). Last night they did a too-short smorgasbord from their two lp's--can we cite the set's brevity to rationalize our not coming up with any photos of them? Perhaps, but how do we explain not wrangling drummer Don Christensen to reprise his impLOG version of Jewish songwriters Leiber and Stoller's "On Broadway"?

Am I right to suggest that local Emo Philips appearances are nearly as rare as those of the Raybeats? The jokes were coming so fast, it's difficult for me to pick a favorite. But I'll bet WFMU air personality Gaylord Fields would have no such problem: I could hear his dumbfounded laughter when Emo pulled off a punchline drawing the distinction between the Latin and Greek meanings of "homo." (I'm sure Gaylord will be only too happy to explain.)

You can read more HERE. WFMU DJ Jesse Jarnow has the setlist, which included two new songs, a cover of Richard Hell's "The Kid With the Replaceable Head" (featuring Jody Harris of the Raybeats on guitar) and a cover of The Monkees' "Take A Giant Step."

YLT continue their run tonight. Any guesses on who opens?

UPDATE: Tonight's (12/9) openers are Fred Armisen and The Sun Ra Arkestra, and Lambchop man main Kurt Wagner made the mix CD.

Full setlist and another pic from the show, below...

It's a tradition! Yo La Tengo begin their eight sold out shows at Maxwell's in recently-Sandy-ravaged Hoboken tonight, Saturday, December 8th, the first night of Hanukkah 2012. As always, each night will featured a varied setlist, a charity and a mix of secret musician and comedy openers and special guests. So far we haven't figured out even one this year. Any guesses?

UPDATE: Night 1 openers were a reunion by The Raybeats and comedian Emo Philips. Tom Scharpling made the mix tape of the night (they sell it for charity). The charity of the night was, appropriately, the Fund to Rebuild Hoboken.

The reunited Rascals are about to kick off a series of shows at Capitol Theater, and Yo La Tengo definitely like the Rascals.

Local musical opener and guest possibilities include Ted Leo, Titus Andronicus, Real Estate, Thurston Moore, Stephin Merritt, AC Newman, Kurt Vile, Lee Ranaldo, and Paul Banks.

Someone guessed Big Dipper.

Andrew Bird, Richard Buckner and Os Mutantes will all be in town (as will Jason Lytle and Sera Cahoone).

Thoughts?

That's this year's new t-shirt pictured above. More Yo La Tengo tour dates are HERE.

A message from Danny Amis

Dear Friends...

I can't thank you enough for your generosity.
Thanks to your help, and the upcoming benefit shows,
I no longer need to stress out over my medical bills. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

As many of you know, I was diagnosed with Cancer in 2010.
This forced me to stop working and touring.
The type of cancer I've been told I have is called
"Multiple Myeloma", cancer of the bone marrow.
I was caught off guard without insurance, but thankfully was able
to obtain insurance through the Affordable Care Act which
passed congress last year and for which I am eternally grateful.
Without that insurance I wouldn't have been able to get a necessary
procedure to save my life called a Stem Cell Transplant.
I underwent that procedure in May, and it seems to have been successful.
I now face a couple of months of recovery.

Your generosity has helped immensely, it's a very expensive procedure.
Unfortunately, high medical costs are something I'll have to face the rest of my life,
as this disease is incurable. I can only hope to knock it into remission for a while.
I'm going to leave this donation button up for those who still want to help.
Simply be aware that I'm not set up to accept tax-deductible donations.
Again, I can't thank you enough for your help!

That donation button is at Danny's website, as is a list of upcoming benefit shows including the one taking place at Maxwell's in Hoboken on June 29. The Raybeats, The Individuals, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley (of Yo La Tengo), The Schramms, and Tall Lonesome Pines all will play the NJ benefit for the sick member of the instrumental surf group Los Straitjackets. Tickets for the Hoboken show are on sale. Conan O'Brien is performing at the LA one which is also still on sale.

Los Straitjackets go on a very long tour of their own without Amis this summer. The tour stops at City Winery on June 23 and 24 with Dave Alvin & the Guilty Ones. Tickets are available for both shows. It also hits Maxwell's on August 4 with Bill Kirchen. Tickets are on sale. All LS dates and benefit dates, below...
