Shaky Hands

Tickets went on sale today for a January 16th Takka Takka / La Strada / Frances show at Mercury Lounge. Wednesday night (12/2), Takka shared a bill with tour-mates US Royalty and The Shaky Hands at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn show was actually kicked off by Josh Wise from French Kicks who played a solo set (Josh made another appearance this week as part of Rumours last night at The Bell House). Josh was followed by an energetic set by US Royalty who were followed by Takka Takka's new lineup which led up to the headliners of the evening. More pictures from the show below...

The Shaky Hands

The Neave: How was it playing alongside bands like the Meat Puppets and the Thermals? What artists or bands, if any, would you like to play/collaborate with in the future?

Mayhaw Hoons of The Shaky Hands: To me, the Meat Puppets tour was the best of all time. We had done five shows with The Shins a few years back, and that was amazing, but I feel like we never had a good connection with the fans. They were playing places like the Greek Theatre; an awesome experience, but kind of strange for us. With the Meat Puppets, we were having great shows every night to the best music fans ever. Plus, getting to know the band was a dream come true.

Thermals fans were a bit harder to crack. They are rabid kids. Some nights were amazing; some nights it was crickets. They wanted to get to their beloved Thermals and crowd surf. Every audience is different, but The Thermals themselves were always great to be around, and as I said earlier, we had an awesome time on the road with them.

We would love to tour with the Puppets again. Other great bands would be Big Business, Tom Petty or, I don't know, Shakira?

The Shaky Hands' tour with their Kill Rock Stars labelmates the Thermals came to New York in May. They were also here for CMJ on the heels of their new record Let It Die, which came out in September. The new record's sound is less insistent punk (than their previous LP, Lunglight) and more classic-inspired bar rock.

Their two-week, NYC-to-Cali tour kicks off Wednesday, December 2nd at Knitting Factory Brooklyn, with Takka Takka, Joshua Wise/Eyeses and tourmates US Royalty . Tickets are on sale.

US Royalty will be joining the band for a few of those tour dates before being replaced by The Rural Alberta Advantage (in who are in NYC this January).

All tour dates and Shaky Hands' video for new song "Already Gone" are below...

The Thermals are in town for the NYC leg of their tour. That includes Friday (5/8) and Saturday (5/9) shows at the Bowery Ballroom, both sold out, and a Monday gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg for which Tickets are still on sale (5/11). The Shaky Hands and Point Juncture, WA open all nights.

Kill Rock Star labelmates and fellow Portlanders Horse Feathers are also in town. As you can see above, the band's kicked it adjacent style while they were in Boston on Thursday, May 7th. It's close, but not exactly the case this weekend, as Horse Feathers play Saturday, May 9th out in Gowanus at the Bell House. Joe Pug and Ben Weaver open. Tickets are on sale. Tuesday, May 12th the band plays Joe's Pub (also with Joe Pug). Tickets for that are on sale as well.

The Thermals

The bad news (for me at least) is that The Thermals aren't playing any of the TBA BrooklynVegan shows at SXSW this year. The good news is they will be there and playing eight others! Maybe not as many as the Mae Shi in 2008, but they will definitely be busy between March 18th and March 21st while in Austin, Texas.

More good news... The Thermals are going on tour with their Kill Rock Stars labelmates The Shakey Hands in April. That includes two nights in a row at Bowery Ballroom - May 8th & 9th. And there is a new 7":

"Now We Can See" is the first single from The Thermals' upcoming CD/LP, Now We Can See, their fourth full-length album, and first for Kill Rock Stars. The "Now We Can See" single also includes the song "My World", plus demo versions of both songs, making side A ("Now We Can See"/"My World") the "hi-fi side", and side B ("Now We Can See (demo)"/"My World (demo)" the "lo-fi (or "no-fi", if yr nasty) side".

This 7" is limited edition AND If you order from Kill Rock Stars directly it will be on the uber limited white vinyl!

Download the song for free, as an MP3, above. All tour dates below...

Shaky Hands

Portland's The Shaky Hands will be visiting Mercury Lounge Saturday, November 8th (tix) with NYC new-wave/discopunkers Holy Hail as part of the band's second full US tour. If attending, look out for the Break The Spell EP, a tour-only "8 song vinyl only ep of live and rare stuff" as well as The Shaky Hands' newest full length, Lunglight, which was released September 9th on Kill Rock Stars. You can grab a track from that above and check out an older mp3-rich Shaky Hands post for older tunes.

Check out a video promo for Lunglight, starring bassist Mayhaw Hoons, below - as well as a music video for the single "We Are Young," whose washed-out, Polaroid-at-the-Pool-Party look is about two weeks late for summer.

Accompanying The Shaky Hands for many dates across the country will be The Acorn. The Acorn's atmospheric folk was most recently featured on last spring's Glory Hope Mountain and you may have caught them at one of their four NYC dates in May. All dates below....

Cut Off Your Hands

Hey there,
We are a four peice band from New Zealand, originally called Shaky Hands but now Cut Off Your Hands....

This was due to the threat of legal action from a band from Portland, Oregon. They didn't like us using the name (or anything similar) in America as they did get to that teritory first and it would have been too time consuming and costly for us to take this matter to court.

We did think about still calling ourselves Shaky Hands and having the name Cut Off Your Hands just for America but that would have got too confusing hence the complete name change. We got the name Cut Off Your Hands from the title of our EP, the EP is now called Shaky Hands..

So to find us please go to www.myspace.com/cutoffyourhands

We love you all for being our friends & look forward to seeing you soon!!

The red, white and blue album cover pictured above is the "Shaky Hands" (formerly "Cut Off Your Hands") EP by Cut Off Your Hands (formerly Shaky Hands) (New Zealand). The album to its right is "The Shaky Hands" LP by The Shaky Hands (Portland, Oregon).

Cut Off Your Hands are pictured above being silly with grass in their mouth and some fake chickens in the background. Here is a picture of The Shaky Hands being silly in the trunk of a vehicle:

Shaky Hands

The Shaky Hands share a member with the Castanets, and have been compared to Neutral Milk Hotel, R.E.M., and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Saying "Cut Off Your Hands Say Yeah" is a funny joke, even though Cut Off Your Hands' music sounds nothing like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Both of these bands are playing CMJ. Both of these hands are playing BrooklynVegan shows. The Shaky Hands are playing my Bowery Ballroom show on October 16th with The Rosebuds, Dean & Britta, Miracle Fortress, Bon Iver, The Most Serene Republic, and one more unannounced band. Tickets are on sale. Cut Off Your Hands are playing my Pianos show on October 17th AT NOON. Celebration, Black Ghosts and many more unnanounced bands are also on that bill (full show TBA soon). It is free. All tour dates below.....
