Kamasi Washington

Jazz musician Kamasi Washington, who's on the new Kendrick Lamar album, the new Thundercat album, and has his own new album out now on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, has announced a lengthy tour. He'll be in NYC for shows on August 24 & 25 at Blue Note Jazz Club. He plays 8 PM and 10:30 PM sets each night. Tickets for all four are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

Speaking of hip hop-related shows happening at the Blue Note, pianist Robert Glasper is in the midst of a four-night run there. He plays 8 PM and 10:30 PM sets tonight (6/25) through Saturday (6/27). Tickets are still available.

After his set on Friday, The Soul Rebels are doing a #RebelJam with rap vets Rakim, Slick Rick and The LOX's Styles P & Sheek Louch, Lettuce/Soulive's Eric Krasno, and more surprise guests (tickets). Rakim and The LOX will be coming from Radio City, where they play the 'Masters of Ceremony' show earlier that night with DMX, Shabba Ranks, Mase, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Brand Nubian and Das Efx (tickets).

And after Glasper's set on Saturday, Okayplayer presents an album release party with Skyzoo for his new Music For My Friends LP (tickets).

photo: Sleater-Kinney in Chicago earlier this month (more by James Richards IV)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Sleater-Kinney, Lizzo @ Terminal 5
Sleater-Kinney aren't on some nostalgia reunion -- they're picking up right where they left off with a killer new record and this is tour is as much about that as it is about old favorites. Tonight's the first of two T5 shows. Both are sold out.

This Will Destroy You, Christopher Tignor, So Hideous @ Saint Vitus
Epic post-rockers This Will Destroy You kick off their BrooklynVegan-presented 2-night stand at Saint Vitus tonight. Different openers both tonights, tonight being TWDY collaborator Christopher Tignor and local atmospheric metal band So Hideous. Both nights are sold out.

Swans, Xylouris White @ Bowery Ballroom
Swans returned five years and three records ago, and nothing's been slowing down this late-career creative burst. The albums are some of their best yet, and the live shows are unstoppable. Tonight's show is understandably sold out.

Seoul, Calvin Love @ Baby's All Right
Montreal's Seoul make featherlight pop that is laid-back but engaging, owing to much to the hushed cool of '80s groups like The Dream Academy and The Blue Nile. Tonight's show is with fellow Canadian Calvin Love.

The Soul Rebels, Pharoahe Monch, Afrika Bambaataa @ Brooklyn Bowl
Eight-piece New Orleans based brass ensemble The Soul Rebels are playing three nights at Brooklyn Bowl and tonight's special guests are conscious rapper Pharoahe Monch and hip hop / electro legend Afrika Bambaataa.

Solids, Cutters, Center, Wather Underground @ Cake Shop
Montreal's Solids make two-piece fuzz rock not unlike their Canadian neighbors Japandroids. Tonight's their second NYC show this week.

Swami John Reis & The Blind Shake, The So So Glos @ Mercury Lounge
The great John Reis (Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, etc) has teamed up with hard-hitting garage rock trio The Blind Shake to pay tribute to classic surf rock instrumentals on a new collaborative album, Modern Surf Classics.

Bang On A Can @ Merkin Concert Hall
Part of the Ecstatic Music Festival, tonight Bang on a Can debut new works by premieres of new works by Wilco's Glenn Kotche, Jace Clayton (aka DJ/rupture) & Ben Frost.

Figs Vision, Holy Komodo, Talibam! @ Baby's All Right
Foxygen auxiliary members Nina Joly and Justin Nijssen have their own band, Holy Komodo who make funky, soft rock synthpop. Check out their new EP below.

MK, Kevin Saunderson, Justin Miller, Nadastrom @ Output
'90s house vet MK and Detroit techno originator Kevin Saunderson headline Output's weekly INPUT party in the main room, while Nadastram (who just dropped a new album on Friends of Friends) will be in the Panther Room.

Sweater Beats, Kastle, Vindata @ Verboten
An equally good dance party to the one at Output goes down at the nearby Verboten tonight with Sweater Beats, Kastle and Vindata.

PC Worship, Turn To Crime, Beech Creeps, Happy You @ Shea Stadium
Detroit's Turn to Crime make soulful garage rock that at times has a warm lived-in quality but also has its scratchy paranoid moments as well. Such are the times. Tonight's show is solid all-around.

Shovels and Rope @ Lincoln Center
Johns Island, SC duo Shovels and Rope play this installment of the American Songbook series, which takes place in the gorgeous Appel Room (with its killer view of Columbus Circle).

The Gaslight Anthem, Northcote, The Scandals @ Webster Hall
The Gaslight Anthem's last two albums sound built for the arenas they're probably just about big enough to play, but luckily for now they're still choosing smaller rooms like tonight's Webster Hall show. On Saturday they'll be at the slightly larger Terminal 5. Both sold out.

Everything Ever, Doe, Blithedale Romance, Eli Whitney and The Sound Machine @ Court Tavern
UK trio Doe pull from '90s indie rock and emo influences. With a new compliation out on Old Flame, the band are over for a bunch of NYC-area shows, this being the only in NJ.

Eartheater, Extreme Animals, Haribo, Highlife @ Secret Project Robot
Eartheater is the solo project of Guardian Alien singer Alexandra Drewchin, which gives her the opportunity to make outsider pop.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

Joey Bada$$ in Austin in 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
Joey Bada$$

Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ has been a pretty big deal for a while, but he's only finally getting around to releasing his debut album. It's called B4DA$$ and is due out sometime this year. No exact release date or tracklist yet, but Joey did recently drop a video for one of its singles, "Big Dusty." You can watch that below.

Like it seemed like he would, Joey will be performing as a guest with The Soul Rebels at their Brooklyn show this Friday (8/15) at Brooklyn Bowl, as he confirmed on Twitter. There's some other exciting guest rappers too, including Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Jean Grae and Skyzoo & Torae. Tickets for the show are available. It's Joey's only upcoming US date that's currently announced.

Video below...

Ab-Soul in Williamsburg Park in 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

There's never a lack of great hip hop shows going on in NYC. Here's a roundup of a few of the good ones coming up, plus a handful of new tracks and videos from artists who will be here soon...

NYC rapper Smoke DZA recently made a video for "Hearses" which features Black Hippy's Ab-Soul and appeared on DZA's recent Dream.Zone.Achieve album. Check that out below. Ab-Soul, who put out his own new album recently, will be here this weekend for the 4Knots afterparty at Webster Hall on Saturday (7/12). Tickets for that show are still available.

Ab-Soul's TDE labelmate SZA, who dropped the track "Moodring" earlier this week, is now back with a Jill Scott collaboration, "Divinity," produced by Channel Orange contributor Om'Mas Keith. Jill's powerhouse soul mixed with SZA's airy indie/R&B tendencies works out really well, as you can hear below. SZA plays the AfroPunk-curated RBSS show at Rough Trade this month with Cakes Da Killa and more ($3 with RSVP). And both Cakes and SZA are playing the free AfroPunk Festival in August with D'Angelo, Body Count, Trash Talk and more.

This weekend is also the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival which includes a show on Saturday (7/12) at 50 Kent with Raekwon, Jay Electronica, CJ Fly, Cyhi The Prynce and more (tickets). Rae just rapped over a remix of Teena Marie's "Ohh La La" yesterday (7/10) for his #TBT series, and you can stream that below. CyHi also just put out a remix of "Good Night" off this year's Hystori: Black History Project mixtape. He brings Scotty ATL, Marian Mereba and Andrew "GC" Fennell along for the remix, which is streaming below.

Speaking of rap shows at 50 Kent, that's where Fool's Gold Day Off happens this year (Labor Day, 9/1) with Danny Brown, French Montana, The LOX and more (tix on sale 7/15). French Montana just put out a new single, "R&B Bitches" featuring Fabolous and Wale which is an unsubtle ode to the female R&B singers they dreamt of sleeping with (Mary J Blige, Miley Cyrus, Ashanti, Kelly Rowland, and Rihanna to name a few). You can stream that one below.

Danny Brown also plays NYC sooner at Peter Rosenberg's birthday party on July 23 at Best Buy Theater with Schoolboy Q and Action Bronson (tickets). Schoolboy Q also plays NYC with The Weeknd and Jhene Aiko on September 19 at Barclays Center. Tickets for that show went on sale earlier today.

Juicy J at Irving Plaza in 2013 (more by Samantha Marble)
Juicy J

The Weeknd's pal Drake will also be in NYC when his tour with Lil Wayne hits Queens' Forest Hills Tennis Stadium on August 19 (tickets). Wayne and Drake's collaborative song "Believe Me" was just revamped by Juicy J who released a version with his own verses that you can stream below. This comes a day after Juicy did the same to Drake's song "0 to 100," which you can also stream below. Juicy's tour hits NYC on July 22 at Terminal 5. Tickets for that show are still available.

Back to this weekend, the Jay Z / Beyonce tour rolls through the NYC-area for shows at MetLife Stadium tonight (7/11) and Saturday (7/12). Tickets for those shows are still available. Jay also plays Global Citizen Fest. Beyonce and Jay Z will also be filming part of their tour for an HBO special, as Billboard reports.

Another rap/R&B double bill hits MetLife Stadium for a 2-night stand in August when Eminem and Rihanna take over the venue (tickets).

For something much smaller, local rap group Ratking play another hometown show on August 4 at SOB's. Tickets are on sale now.

Krayzie Bone

For something more old school at SOB's, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony member Krayzie Bone will celebrate the release of his new album, Chasing The Devil, there on July 22. Tickets are on sale.

For something even more old school, Biz Markie celebrates the 25th anniversary of "Just A Friend" with a live performance and DJ set on September 12 at BB King's. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Sooner at BB King's, you can catch Fat Joe with Smoove Ski, La Luv and Famous on July 18. Tickets are on sale.

Internet-famous rap group Turquoise Jeep return to NYC on September 18 at Brooklyn Bowl with Oxymorrons and SABA. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

And while we're not sure who will show up, The Soul Rebels play Brooklyn Bowl on August 15 with special guests and a Google search shows Joey Bada$$ was initially announced. Even if it's no longer him, they've collaborated with other rappers including Slick Rick, members of Mobb Depp, The Lox and more, so it should be interesting. Tickets are on sale.

There's plenty of other upcoming hip hop shows in NYC too, including Deltron 3030, Hieroglyphics, De La Soul, and still more. What else?

All streams and videos below...
