One of last year's coolest reissues was Who Is William Onyeabor? which collected many of the cult Nigerian funk singer and synthesizer pioneer William Onyeabor's best tracks. For more on who he is, this past week a new Onyeabor documentary, titled Fantastic Man, premiered online, featuring interviews with Damon Albarn, Dan Snaith of Caribou, the Human League's, Martyn Ware (The Human League), Femi Kuti and many more. It's well worth watching and you can do so in this post.

There is also a remix album, titled What?, that was commissioned by Moog and will be released on Record Store Day (April 19) featuring reworkings by Hot Chip, The Vaccines, Justin Strauss & Bryan Mette, Joakim ft. Akwetey (Dragons of Zynth), JD Twitch (Optimo), Daphni, Javelin, David Terranova, Policy and Scientist.

And last but not least there will be a series of tribute concerts happening in cities around the world this spring, including two in NYC on May 2 & 3. Details have not been announced yet, so stay tuned.

You can listen to Who is William Onyeabor? via Rdio, and watch the Fantastic Man documentary below...

Phoenix at Barclays Center - 10/2/13
Phoenix
Phoenix

Phoenix played just about every hit song of theirs that you can think of. No obscure deep cuts or French songs mixed in - just what the fans would order up. After a continuous dozen or so of those songs performed without a break or much banter, Mars disappeared as his band-mates played the mostly instrumental "Love is Like a Sunset" while the screen behind the band depicted a drive through the streets of Paris. Until then the concert was low on glitz - mainly just straight singing and playing - but this was the first of a few wonderful little extras. The next was a blast of fake $100 bills into the crowdPhx-Barclays (3) before and during "Armistice", followed by Mars jumping into the crowd - not for the last time - just a foot or two away from me as he sang the anthemic "1901". Mars stayed close to the crowd, sitting at the edge of the stage with fans' hands surrounding him for the one lullaby of the evening, "Countdown". The slow song - which featured only Mars and Chris Mazzalai playing guitar - plus "If I Ever Feel Better" built the tension for "one of the first songs we ever wrote ... a dance song, so feel free to dance", "Funky Squaredance." [2bitmonkey]
Phoenix have been on a tour which currently has the band in Austin for two weekends of ACL Festival (one happened, the next starts today [10/11]) and a surprise show in a high school gym. (Not the only surprise show at a high school to happen this week.) Just before the first weekend of ACL, Phoenix stopped in NYC for a big NYC show at Barclays Center on October 2 with The Vaccines. Their set at that show leaned most heavily on their last two albums -- this year's Bankrupt! and their 2009 breakthrough, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix -- and they included a couple oldies too. Their full setlist, pictures and videos from the show are in this post.

Forest Hills Tennis Stadium - 8/28/13
Bear's Den - Forest Hills, Queens - August 29th, 2013
Bear's Den - Forest Hills, Queens - August 29th, 2013

"Yes, Forest Hills, Queens, New York. We just can't believe you all came. This is amazing," keyboardist Ben Lovett said. "We were like, 'Are you sure you can invite 17,000 people to a tennis court?' It hasn't happened in a long time." [ABC News]
After years of not hosting music, Queens' Forest Hills Tennis Stadium (which had booked The Beatles, The Stones, and others back in the day) reopened as a music venue on Wednesday (8/28) with a show from Mumford & Sons, The Vaccines, and Bear's Den. With more shows being planned for the next two summers, this one acted as a bit of a test run, and it wasn't without its obstacles.

Certain fans who had already purchased tickets were reportedly turned away from the show, not because it was oversold, but because the venue was having trouble getting people up to the second deck. For those who were turned away, the promoters are offering refunds on tickets. A statement (via Jambands.com) reads:

Dear Patrons,

We are writing to acknowledge some issues with tonight's Mumford & Sons concert at Forest Hills Stadium. As many of you know, this was the first show in many years at the stadium, and we collectively experienced the growing pains that come with re-opening a new venue.

We hope you enjoyed the show, but we will gladly offer full refunds to those of you who did not have an optimal experience at the stadium. We can assure you that we are working with City Officials and City Agencies to improve conditions and make sure everyone who comes to a show in Forest Hills has the best experience possible.

If you would like a refund, please contact Front Gate Tickets Support.

On behalf of the West Side Tennis Club, WSTC Events, Bowery Presents and Mumford & Sons, we apologize for any difficulties and thank you for taking the chance on joining us for this historic concert.

We hope to see you again soon.

WSTC

The park is on a residential street, and some residents who live in the area were not too happy about the show either. One resident, Tracey Joseph, compared the event to what VMAs did to Brooklyn, writing (via Patch):
I just want to know who the genius was that let a TV show and a concert block traffic and take up parking all in the same week. And residents are mostly annoyed because they gave us no notice about the traffic and parking until a Gardens email yesterday afternoon.
Another Patch reader, Superkitty87, emailed them saying:
We are being told that we will not be allowed in the park during the concert. Furthermore, we will not be allowed out on the sidewalks or in the streets for the duration of the day. We will only be allowed to leave the neighborhood and return home to our apartments. We have every right to be there as we have been every day and will continue to be. We will not stand for this, so than an already overpriced tennis club can make more money.
Other residents reacted more kindly, including some who were interviewed in a NY1 video, who seemed to support the idea of the concerts.

Mixed reviews came from inside the venue too. One attendee emailed Gothamist, writing:

The bathroom and beer lines were insane, and with all the volunteer help, no one seemed to care what happened. Lots of people were smoking around us and they even let my boyfriend and his friend walk in smoking cigars.

It was a fantastic show and lots of fun, even with the girls next to us who spent the entire concert screaming at each other for long periods of time and then dancing entirely too frantically. The band was so fun, they forgot lyrics, jumped over their equipment that they knocked over and just had an amazing time.

Did you go to the show? Or did you experience it from living nearby? If so, how do you think it all went down?

Lollapalooza Day 3 - 8/4/2013
Lollapalooza Day 3 - 8/4/2013
Lollapalooza Day 3 - 8/4/2013

Even Goth-rockers love singalongs. After the opening synth chords, the Cure's Robert Smith begins to belt out "Just Like Heaven" and is instantly joined by a Grant Park choir numbering in the tens of thousands. Smith and his bandmates sprinkle Cure classics such as "Pictures of You" and "Friday I'm in Love" through a set that continues the weekend's '80s nostalgia theme, begun by New Order and Nine Inch Nails. Smith is in fine voice, and he even pulls off a few interpretive dance moves -- a rare bout of friskiness from a singer who still sports frazzled hair, eye shadow and lipstick. It's become his trademark, and it's turned Smith somewhat timeless -- an ageless figure still singing about a type of loss, heartache and yearning that never dissipates. [Chicago Tribune]

The Vaccines @ T5 1/31/2012
The Vaccines

"When you're a kid and you see these people in these bands, you think they're these perfect beings beamed down from space," says [Vaccines' frontman Justin] Young. "I definitely don't feel like a different person, but perhaps I'm expected to be. I really didn't want to make a record about being in a band and being a musician. I think that really disconnects you from your audience, because how can anyone relate to being in a band? So I wanted to talk about it from a human perspective, rather than a musician's perspective. I think when you get into your mid 20s, you realize how big and bad the world is and no matter how much you cry over spilled milk, no one is gonna mop it up for you. The world is a cruel place and it's like realizing that." - [Metro US]
UK indie rockers The Vaccines headlined Terminal 5 last night (1/31) as part of their current North American tour. Local band DIIV made a rare NYC appearance as openers. Did you go to the show?

At the same time Dunham was giving her acceptance speech, Season 2 of Girls (now featuring Donald Glover as Hannah's new boyfriend) was making its debut on the pay cable channel.

The soundtrack to Girls just came out last week and one of the songs exclusive to it is Santigold's "Girls." We've got the premiere of its video right here in this post. Shot here in NYC the cool little clip features girls from all walks of life (and all ages) lip-synching to the track and you can watch it below. Santigold played Bowery Ballroom back in December and her only upcoming live date is at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on February 9. Video and Girls OST artwork and tracklist below...

The Fly is the "UK's most popular new music magazine," but if you haven't heard of it, its because it's a free monthly that doesn't really get international distribution. You can however read it online. The mag just released it's year-end issue and topping their Best Albums of 2012 is Sharon Van Etten's Tramp (which was just released in a Deluxe edition, a fine Xmas gift don't you know). Sharon narrowly beat out Grimes, whose Visions came in at #2. The whole list, in ascending order, is below and you can read what The Fly said about each album here.

By the way you can still get tickets for the December 15 show at Cameo that Sharon curated with She Keeps Bees and Speck Mountain and "Special Guest."
