Themselves are on the road with someone else, namely Rhymesayers duo Eyedea & Abilities. The pair are currently getting ready to spend Thanksgiving day somewhere between DC (11/25) and Brooklyn, and are scheduled to take on Knitting Factory in NYC on 11/27. Tickets are on sale. E&A are touring off of their recent LP, By The Throat, their first in five years. Dig on "This Story" from that LP above, along with videos for "Smile" and "Junk" below.
In other Rhymesayers news, Slug of Atmosphere & Murs have issued their latest ode to female actresses, FELT 3. This time, their muse is the queen of White Men Can't Jump and Do The Right Thing, Rosie Perez:
B-List actresses be warned and flattered because FELT is back! Slug (Atmosphere) and Murs (Living Legends) reunite for their third release from moniker FELT. These MCs teamed up with The Grouch (Living Legends) in 2002 to release FELT's debut album A Tribute to Christina Ricci. Collaborating with producer Ant (Atmosphere) in 2005 resulted in their second coming A Tribute to Lisa Bonet. With the fresh addition of Aesop Rock (Def Jux) on production and unwavering love for those forgotten actresses who warmed their hearts, Slug and Murs are pleased to present FELT 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez...That LP is out now on Rhymesayers Entertainment, along with the new Freeway mixtape The Beat Made Me Do It featuring Don Cannon (cannon, cannon, cannon) on the wheels and Jake One on the pads. Download that above. Freeway will issue The Stimulus Package via Rhymesayers Entertainment on Feb 16, 2010. Freeway was once a frequent collaborator with Jay-Z who is set to play the Izod Center and Nassau Coliseum this spring.

Dose One (Adam Drucker) and Jel (Jeffrey Logan) = Themselves...

[At the Force Field PR SXSW day party,] Themselves followed [Anticon labelmate Yoni Wolf of Why?] and deserve mention in their own right. The duo of Dose One (of Subtle fame) and Jel just droped the excellent FreeHoudini tape last week, and live, their performance was everything you'd expect from a Scribble Jam vet signed to Anticon. Ferocious double-timed raps performed by a guy in a Mohawk and argyle vest. I understand (and don't really blame) people who are put off by that, but if you can get past the aesthetic challenges posed, this is highly progressive hip-hop, and for once, I don't mean that as a perjorative.[LA Weekly]On April 1st, Themselves will set out on a nearly-three-week tour, with two NYC shows: Friday, April 3rd at Union Pool and Saturay, April 4th at The Studio @ Webster Hall. (The Webster Hall show has advance tickets on sale.)
Both NYC dates are with Stabbing Eastward (featuring Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio) and DJ Thanksgiving Brown. The Union Pool shows will also feature Zizek.
Themselves' theFREEhoudini release, "a 40-minute, guest-packed mixtape" and limited-time free download, came out on March 16th on Anticon. The label says it'll host the free record for 90 days (till June 14th). A "deluxe version" CD copy of theFREEhoudini, with bonus material, came out on March 25th. Anticon reports that another LP from the band, CrownsDown, will be out later this year.
Themselves will also play Coachella in April. All tour dates, NYC-shows flyers, and a Themselves behind-the-scenes video below...

Zach Hill, Performance Attire May Vary...

Spazzy drummer Zach Hill (Hella/Marnie Stern/Team Sleep/The Ladies) will be in town over the next two days performing "Necromancer" with Peer Pressure or, the second disc of the 2CD extravaganza known as Astrological Straits (out now on Ipecac). So what's "Necromancer" all about, and who the hell is Peer Pressure?
HELLO ! TO THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN INQUIRING ABOUT WHAT AND WHO "PEER PRESSURE" MAY BE IT'S ACTUALLY MY DRUM SET! HAHA THATS STRAIGHT TALK! IN THE FUTURE THIS MONIKER WILL MOST LIKELY DEFINE A COLLECTIVE OF HUMAN BEINGS PLAYING SONGS AND MY DRUM SET, BUT FOR THIS TOUR ITS A METAPHOR FOR THE DRUMS AND THATS ABOUT ALL I'M BRINGING AND ALL IM PLAYING. TO MAKE IT CLEAR SO THERES NO CONFUSION ABOUT MY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES I AM PERFORMING A 45 MINUTE NON STOP HEAVILY IMPROVISED RENDITION OF THE TRACK "NECROMANCER" OFF OF MY NEWEST SOLO RELEASE. THIS WILL BE ME ON DRUMS AND THE LAPTOP ON LAPTOP OR THE IPOD ON IPOD. I PLAN ON PERFORMING THE MORE SONG ORIENTED MATERIAL OFF THE ALBUM WITH A FULL BAND IN THE THE FUTURE BUT FOR MANY REASONS IT WAS UNREALISTIC AT THIS JUNCTURE. SO THIS IS HOW I WILL BE EXPRESSING MYSELF IN THE NOW ASIDE FROM THE SHOWS WERE ITS NOTED THAT I'LL HAVE SOMEONE AWESOME SITTING IN WITH ME! [Zach Hill]Zach Hill WILL have "someone awesome sitting in" with him at the Knitting Factory in NYC on 11/18, namely Marco Benevento. Also on the bill: Pattern Is Movement and Subtle (their last tour "for some time", they are going on hiatus). Tickets are still on sale.
Hill also plays Death By Audio in Brooklyn with Fiasco the next day (11/19). Hill is also opening for the mighty Fantomas when they ring in the New Year, in San Francisco.
Speaking of Subtle, doseone and jel of Subtle (aka Themselves) will headline the "Anticon 3rd Annual 10-Year Anniversary" at NYC's Knitting Factory on December 18th with Yoni Wolf (of WHY?), Buck 65, Sole, Alias, Odd Nosdam + Jel, pedestrian + DJ Thanksgiving Brown. Tickets are on sale.
Odd Nosdam recently posted a free download of beats from 2002 - 2003 entitled CIRCUS faux PREZ beats! and a mixtape... Mixtape Super Delux. Download 'em and other MP3's above.

Themselves

ESG

ESG--four Scroggins sisters plus various percussionists--formed in the South Bronx in the late '70s, and went from covering the Stones and Rufus to recording for Tony Wilson's Factory Records label. The band's uniquely minimalist funk/post-punk sound soon caught on in clubs and dance palaces like the Paradise Garage. Decades later, songs such as "Moody" and "UFO" still resonate, partly because they've been sampled hundreds of times. Alas, ESG, which reformed in the '90s, has announced its Estrojam show will be its last [they lied].today in NYC & NJ
