Seth Meyers on strike - November 5, 2007 (CRED)

He (Lorne Michaels) is wary about what is going to happen this weekend when this venerable sketch show returns after more than three months. So for Saturday's return he has enlisted Tina Fey, an "SNL" alum, and the country singer Carrie Underwood............Mr. Michaels said that even with her familiarity with the show, he picked Ms. Fey as host because "it was just the right time for her." He noted that she had won a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild award and a Producers Guild award in recent months, "all in stealth fashion." Next week's host is Ellen Page, star of the Oscar-nominated film "Juno." After that things get murky until May when Shia LeBoeuf and Steve Carell are committed, largely because both have films ("Indiana Jones" for Mr. LeBoeuf and "Get Smart" for Mr. Carell) opening this spring. [NY Times]Then Sunday night is the Oscars where it will be a battle between "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood", though according to the Guardian..
If the general public had any say in the matter, this year's best picture Oscar would go to Juno rather than joint favourites There Will be Blood and No Country For Old Men. For good measure, 20-year-old Ellen Page would scoop the best actress award while Johnny Depp would be named best actor for his turn in Sweeney Todd. Each is considered a long shot, at best, to win an Oscar this Sunday.
If you haven't heard yet, The Golden Globe awards were handed out last night at - due to the writer's strike - a quickly done press conference that any TV station was free to broadcast. I watched some of it on CNN which meant I got to hear all of Larry King's unintentional hilarious commentary when awards were announced ("a great movie everyone needs to see", etc). I felt tense when they were about to announce best picture. Would it be "There Will Be Blood" or "No Country For Old Men"? They were the only two I saw in that category, and the two I was misled into believing had to win. I was about to feel bad for the one that didn't win, when it was announced that neither won. "Atonement" took it instead. I need to see that - and "The Great Debaters" that Sharon Jones is in, and "American Gangster" that inspired the new Jay-Z album.
Daniel Day Lewis did win best actor though, and Javier Bardem won best supporting actor, so both NCFOM and TWBB were well-represented. "Ratatouille" starring future Plug Awards host Patton Oswalt won best cartoon, "Sweeney Todd" beat "Juno" for best musical or comedy, and Eddie Vedder won best song. Jonny Greenwood didn't win anything, which could be because they don't even seem to have a soundtrack category.

The Coen brothers' No Country For Old Men was the big winner at the Critics' Choice Awards in the US, taking home three awards including best film......Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood won a prize for the soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood, and its star, Daniel Day Lewis, won best actor......Awards came in pairs for two other films, teenage pregnancy drama Juno, and musical comedy Hairspray. I knew that Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead just put out a CD, and I've seen the creepy trailer for the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis, but it wasn't until today that I put two and two together and realized that both of these things are There Will Be Blood.
Anderson had been a fan of Radiohead's music and listened to Popcorn Superhet Receiver halfway through writing the screenplay. After agreeing to score the film, initially Jonny Greenwood had his doubts and thought about backing out but Anderson's reassurance and enthusiasm for the film convinced the musician to stick with the project. [Wikipedia]There Will be Blood opens on December 26th. The soundtrack is available at Amazon, and three songs are streaming at its official site.
Popcorn Superhet Receiver is being performed (apparently WITHOUT Jonny Greenwood in attendance, although I'm told there's a chance he might show up) in NYC on January 16th & 17th.
