The third annual Tinderbox Music Festival went down across three stages at Webster Hall this past Sunday (11/11). The festival aims to showcase "powerful, diverse, and innovative female artists and female-fronted bands" and this year's fest included Cocorosie, Jean Grae, Selebrities, Sirius Plan, Mal Blum (who plays Mercury Lounge on 12/11 with Zoe Boekbinder and tickets go on sale Monday [11/19] at noon), and more.
The festival doubles as a benefit show, and like in past years proceeds went to Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls Girls Write Now, and the Tinderbox Songwriting Workshop, but due to recent circumstances, this year they also donated part of the proceeds to New York Cares to help with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
Glamour Magazine talked to Sierra from Cocorosie right after the show:
Glamour: How do you feel right now after this amazing performance? What, what was the question? Read the rest of the interview at Glamour (yes, Glamour).Sierra: I feel very lucky. I feel really blessed. The main thing we try to do is find our fear and run towards it. So lucky to have [Bianca] because there have been moments when I didn't have the courage to go through what I have, so I feel great. There are artists who have to do this, totally solo. I don't think I could do that, so working with fear is a big thing for me. For young artists and women, working with fear is probably what inspires us the most.

CocoRosie at MHOW in 2010 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

The Tinderbox Music Festival, whose mission is to showcase innovative female artists and donate 100% of the proceeds to organizations empowering women in music, is returning to NYC this year, and unlike 2010's at Southpaw and 2011's at Knitting Factory, this year it takes place at the much larger Webster Hall on November 11 and CocoRosie will be headlining. No other details have been announced yet, so stay tuned for more to come.
There will also be a fundraiser for the festival which happens on September 13 at The Lounge at Wework (177 Lafayette St at Grand St) with Nellie McKay, Alyson Greenfield, and Dawn Landes' band The Bandana Splits. $50 tickets for the fundraiser are on sale now. The flier for the fundraiser is below.
CocoRosie resurfaced this year with a new single on Touch & Go (for whom the release was also a comeback). If you haven't heard the Dave Sitek-produced "We Are On Fire" or its Antony-featuring b-side, "Tearz for Animals," you can check them both out below.
