Yeasayer Kin show in San Francisco
Not to be confused with their DJ set at Museum of Natural History, Passion Pit will perform their previously-mentioned, free "Kin" show at a secret Tribeca location in NYC tonight (5/14). The location and other details will be revealed at some point on the event's Facebook page. Same goes for Saturday's Black Keys show, Saturday's Ting Tings show, and the newly-announced Dead Weather show happening in Chicago
on next Sunday Saturday (5/22).
For the Black Keys, it's one of three NYC shows in a week. The other two happen at the very tiny Housing Works Bookstore and the very large Madison Square Garden.
"Kin" hosted their first promotional shows in this series the other day in San Francisco with performances by Asher Roth, N.E.R.D. and Yeasayer. Pictures from those continue below...
Passion Pit @ Terminal 5 in January (more by Samantha Marble)
Passion Pit, The Black Keys and Ting Tings will all be playing free shows in NYC sometime soon. There's a Facebook event page for the shows, but very little information otherwise. They're being sponsored by Kin, which is a new Windows-based phone. Kin is also putting on two free shows in San Francisco - one with Yeasayer and one with NERD & Asher Roth - on May 8th.
Beast @ CMJ 2009 (more by Chris La Putt)
Lady Gaga was nominated five times. Considering her rocket to fame over the last year, many were expecting more for her. But at least the contests are going to be really interesting: Beyoncé, [Taylor] Swift and Lady Gaga are going head to head in three of the most important categories: album, record and song of the year. Will one of them sweep, or will the lady vote be split?Neko Case, Imogen Heap, Phoenix, Silversun Pickups, David Byrne, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are some of the other familiar names in the list of Grammy nominees this year. As Ben Sisario in the NY Times alludes, the nominations are a complete joke and predictable... but fun to look at anyway. Nobody expects Animal Collective to get picked, despite their soon-to-be status of being one of the highly rated artists of the year (and decade maybe).
One of the usual complaints about the Grammys is that it over-rewards older, established, familiar acts at the expense of newer, fresher ones. MGMT, the Brooklyn synth-rock duo, was nominated for best new artist, a big coup although not unexpected. But some of the shoulda-been names that have been circulated and Tweeted: Grizzly Bear, another acclaimed Brooklyn group; Regina Spektor, a young New York songwriter who started in the underground and has found some mainstream popularity; Diane Birch, a young soul-style singer, just the revivalist type the Grammys usually adore; and the Decemberists, an alt-folk-rock band from Portland, Ore., that released an ambitious concept album this year. [NY Times]
One surprise (for me anyway) came this year in the video category. Montreal's Beast were nominated for "Mr. Hurricane". That video with a list of some of the other nominees, below...

"She did a mix of her solo songs with Dresden songs, some old cabaret standards. A really sad song about a woman growing up and missing her mom now that shes gone. It made me cry. She did a funny song about a pirate too.Franz Nicolay and Sxip Shirey joined Amanda Palmer and the Nervous Cabaret for the show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday night (11/14). Franz played a show at Southpaw on the same night and he plays again with Demander and Hoots & Hellmouth at Mercury Lounge tonight (11/16).
It wasnt just a regular concert though. Amanda read snippets from her boyfriend Neil Gaiman's book titled Who Killed Amanda Palmer. Its a really cool book that I totally need to get. Its basically a photo book of Amanda dead in different scenarios and stories that go along with the pictures. She read a story about a guy in a hot air balloon with his girlfriend and he was typing a novel with a typewriter and the picture is Amanda in a field with a typewriter on her head and groceries to the side. It was cute.
She also did a question and answer period. I was bummed because I found out there was a fishbowl where people could submit questions and had I known I would have put in a few haha. She answered about 4 which was awesome.
Also during the tour, at every show she has artists doing drawings and painting during the concert. Towards the end of the show, she auctions them off. Well there were two artists and both paintings went for 300 each! Pretty damn nifty." [Natalia]
Amanda and friends covered "That's Not My Name" by the Ting Tings at the show. A video of that and more pictures below...
mud, Tool & Ice T
During his Friday night set at the All Points West festival in Jersey City, Jay-Z took a moment to salute trail-blazing gangsta-rapper Ice-T, who, Jay-Z said, was "in the house." And Saturday afternoon, Ice-T took the stage to perform as a backing rapper during Kool Keith's second-stage performance.Though it didn't rain on Saturday (8/1), it was still super muddy. There were dry spots, but you literally could not walk from one place to another without going through some mud. Other highlights of the second day of All Points West included comedy by Tim & Eric in the tent (aka the third stage), back-to-back sets by St. Vincent and Neko Case on the 2nd stage, and the Arctic Monkeys and Gogol Bordello on the main stage. But nothing topped the end of the day. Now fully dark out and perfect weather, My Bloody Valentine, with the Statue of Liberty to their right and the Manhattan skyline straight ahead of them, delivered the power. The hour they played was, for me, the perfect festival experience.
"Sometimes it's just cool to stand on the side of the stage and be a hype man," said Ice-T.
He did, though, perform parts of his own raps, "Hardcore" and "God Forgive Me," a cappella.
With his confident, casually commanding flow, he made a strong impression in his few brief moments in the spotlight.
In addition to Jay-Z and Kool Keith, hip-hop acts like Q-Tip, the Knux and the Cool Kids have performed at All Points West. Hip-hop, though, will not figure prominently in the third and final day of the festival, Sunday. [NJ.com]
My Bloody Valentine
It helped that My Bloody Valentine, as they are known for being, were LOUD. Maybe they didn't seem as loud as they did inside a club, but they were loud enough that even those in the bleachers were putting on their earplugs if they had them. After their set I ran all the way back to the dance tent (pretty much the farthest distance you would have to ever go at this festival) to catch Crystal Castles. The tent was packed with the largest concentration of youth I'd seen in Liberty State Park up until that point. Everyone was dancing and cheering. Before CC were finished I ran back to the main stage to watch Tool.
During My Bloody Valentine I thought, "well, there are plenty of people here, but I guess they could fit a lot more". Ends up, all of those people that could fit, they showed up for Tool! Did they all just get there? Were they hiding in other areas? Either way, it totally hit me by surprise when I got back to the stage. I was also surprised, but happy, that Tool hadn't gone on yet. They don't play a super long set, so maybe they delayed to make the show go until curfew.
Once they did start, the amount of fist pumping (much bro fist pumping included) going on almost matched the amount of people in the park. I wouldn't consider myself a Tool fan, but there was no denying the awesomeness of their show.
"On a bill loaded with indie rock, Tool seemed initially distinguished by their popularity. They were the only band on Saturday's bill to have a platinum record, and the only performers to have won Grammys, and the only ones with enough starpower to sell out arenas on their own. And yet despite their high profile, Tool hardly behave like a mainstream band. Saturday's set was an exercise in atmosphere -- a dark, riveting performance that minimized the members of band while foregrounding their stranger sensibilities.I took the light rail to the park, but then the ferry home. Props to APW for making the ferry experience a much, much better one this year (no line at all, huge boats, very quick trip home, and I didn't even leave until Tool was finished).
Visually, the show was stunning. Tool perform to a series of bleak films mostly created by the artist Adam Jones, and beamed out giant-size across Liberty State Park they seemed more imposing and unnerving than ever. Opening with the sinister, twisting "Jambi," the group slowly worked its way through a set that spanned its small catalog. Part of what makes Tool concerts such visceral experiences is the band's peerless sense of control and release. Songs start with icicle drip guitars and rolling, tribal percussion, steadily building to perfectly timed explosions of sound. When paired with Jones' frightening films, it became more like a theater experience than a concert. At times it was remarkably easy to forget there was a band onstage at all." [Rolling Stone]

Leftover Crack fan in Texas (more)
Leftover Crack, Star Fucking Hipsters, Trash Talk, and The Casualties are playing Irving Plaza on July 3rd. Assuming Irving Plaza doesn't get shut down (unlikely) (or even if it does), this punk show is sure to be a good time. Tickets are on sale.
Less of a good time will probably be had at the punk show happening at Madison Square Garden on July 27th. Tickets for Green Day's big NYC show are on sale (@ 10am). They are also playing a few shows at much smaller venues, and Saturday Night Live this weekend.
The opposite of a good time will probably be had at the same big venue on October 5th. The Ting Tings are playing MSG with Pink. Tickets are on presale (@ 10am). PASSWORD = LEAPFROG
Probably fun, but still kind of lame? Aerosmith and ZZ Top play MSG on September 14th. Tickets are on AmEx and Internet presale now, and go on general sale Monday, May 18th, at 10am. It's the same day Kings of Leon play Nassau Coliseum.
Same venue, same summer (move over Blondie, Pat Benatar and The Donnas): The Pretenders, Cat Power and Juliette (and the Licks) Lewis are playing the Stone Pony's Summerstage on August 9th. Tickets are currently on Ticket Rush presale (password = live), and they go on general sale Saturday at noon. The same three ladies (bands) have an August 22nd Colorado show scheduled, so let's home for a full tour with NYC date too.
And don't forget Kylie Minogue tickets go on sale Saturday at 10am.

The 4th edition of the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival will take place in Montreal's Parc Jean-Drapeau on August 1st and 2nd. Osheaga is proud to announce that the headliners for this year's edition are the multi-platinum selling band Coldplay on Saturday, August 1st and hip-hop pioneers Beastie Boys on Sunday, August 2nd....Osheaga is one of only two North American festival appearances that Coldplay will make this year. The other North American festival is All Points West, which takes place the same weekend in NJ, and also has the Beastie Boys, Lykke Li, Arctic Monkeys, Crystal Castles, the Ting Tings, Elbow, and Kitty Daisy and Lewis in common with the Canadians.
Also playing the Osheaga Fest will be The Roots (who played APW last year, and...), who, because of their Jimmy Fallon gig, are mostly sticking to NYC-area gigs this year. They will also play the outdoor fest of their own in Philly over the summer.
This year will mark the fourth year for the Osheaga Festival. BV Mike was there last year: Day 1 and Day 2, and in 2007 too. The 2008 festival was also when Iggy & the Stooges - with Mike Watt - got their equipment stolen.
Tickets for the festival go on sale Friday, April 3rd at noon. More info and full (initial?) line-up below...
Following last year's inaugural event, festival producers began work immediately on resolving concerns expressed by fans in attendance. They have worked closely with their partners at NJ Transit to improve light-rail service and capacity. As an added value for 2009, festival goers who choose to travel to the site utilizing the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line can ride for free throughout the weekend with their ALL POINTS WEST festival ticket. Additionally, based on the popularity of the ferry as a mode of transportation from lower Manhattan to Liberty State Park, the frequency and size of the ferryboats will increase at a reduced price for festival attendees.... The producers have also worked with their partners at Liberty State Park to improve the fan experience in the beer gardens. This year's areas will be larger, have shorter lines, and feature shade tents, views of the stages and food concessions...The second annual ALL POINTS WEST MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL returns to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey Friday, July 31, Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. Like last year, bands will play on three stages, except "the Queen of the Valley stage has been changed to a Coachella-like tent creating an environment that will showcase comedy, DJs, electronic acts and bands."
More details on the items above will be posted at the apwfestival.com. The entire lineup (it's good!) and ticket info, below...

They are the only local team in any high school sport this season to carry a perfect record. The boys' soccer team from Coachella Valley High School is also ranked as one of the best in Division III.Coachella 2009 festival tickets are on sale (@ noon).
And that says something.
The Arabs, who won the CIF championship two years ago in Division IV, have been elevated to Division III this season and are the only team to post an unblemished record in the Top 10 as ranked by the Southern California Soccer Coaches Association.
Two years ago, in coach Adrian Barragan's first season, the Arabs were not perfect, but they won it all, finishing at 20-3-2.

Yes, the flyer you saw on this site, on MySpace, in emails and elsewhere said that the Ting Tings were playing the free BrooklynVegan party this past Thursday morning at 11:30 am (early, I know). Yes, the mass "Free Yr Radio" text message I sent out that morning said to get there on time to see the Ting Tings. Yes, the Ting Tings even showed up.....that WAS them (and their many handlers) you saw standing in and around Emo's Annex with their gear and on stage somewhat ready to go. And YES, that's correct - they didn't end up playing, and yes that was their van you saw driving off into the distance at around 11:20. Why? According to them, "there was a time issue". According to me....well, it doesn't really matter what I think, so I'll just say I'm sorry on behalf of everyone involved. Tour dates below....
