Explosions In The Sky at Wellmont Theater (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
Explosions In The Sky

NYU students get a treat this Valentine's Day, a show from Explosions In The Sky! The Texas post-rock quartet will join Grouper and Ducky for a Feb 14th NYU-students-only show (though it's "2 tickets per NYU ID"). The show will be seated on a first come, first serve basis and is a benefit for the Burton CHILL Foundation. Full details, including ticket information, below.

EITS so far has announced a few US festival appearances, but no additional dates. Catch them at Coachella and Sasquatch this year.

In other news, Grouper will team with Tiny Vipers for a collaborative LP entitled Foreign Body. Mirroring, the name for the duo, will release the record on March 19th via Kranky.

So far Liz Harris (Grouper) has a European tour mapped out for March, but no additional US dates to speak of. Full tour schedule is below.

Uncle TupeloJust a week after fellow Uncle Tupelo member Jeff Tweedy released the self-titled Wilco album, Jay Farrar drops Son Volt's strongest effort in years, American Central Dust. Tour dates HERE.

This week's music release list may be relatively short, but several of these discs are already among my favorites of the year, including Bowerbirds' Upper Air, Those Darlins' self-titled debut album, and Tiny Vipers' Life On Earth. Bowerbirds are now on tour with a show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC on Wednesday (7/8).

The Drive-By Truckers' Live from Austin Texas captures the band's latest Austin City Limits performance, complete with audio and video cut from the broadcast.

Poet: A Tribute to Townes Van Zandt collects covers from Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, and Willie Nelson.

Scott McCaughey, who is doing a bunch of touring this summer, marks a rare double this week with new albums out from both of his bands, The Minus 5's Killingsworth and Young Fresh Fellows' I Think This Is.

Other albums sent my way that I can recommend include Cass McCombs' Catacombs, Music From The North Country: The Jayhawks Anthology, Oneida's Rated O, and The Rural Alberta Advantage's Hometowns.

The week's reissue highlights are Matador Records' vinyl releases of two Yo La Tengo albums (Electr-O-Pura and I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, New Pornographers' Electric Version, as well as Cat Power's The Covers Record. Yo La Tengo have a new album coming out soon too.

What new music can you recommend this week? What's on your shopping list? Have I left any interesting releases off the list?

New music dominated my 2007, I listened to more new releases than any other year in my life. With new CDs arriving daily, I struggled at times to keep up with the deluge, but was rewarded in the end with a wealth of quality music.

Looking back, I was surprised how many artists on this list have appeared on my previous year-end lists, but this is my sixth favorite albums list at Largehearted Boy.

See what came out this week.

Sea Wolf

We want to be JUST LIKE: Wolf Eyes, Wolf Parade, We Are Wolves, AIDS Wolf, Wolfie, Wolf Colonel, Patrick Wolf, WolfMother, Guitar Wolf, Steppenwolf, Hugo Wolf, Kate Wolf, Laurent Wolf, Wolf City, Duran Duran (though they don't really count. they were just 'hungry like a wolf'), Howlin' Wolf, Superwolf, White Wolf, Seasons of the Wolf, Wolf & Cub, Peanut Butter Wolf, Peter Wolf, Peter and the Wolf, Los Lobos, Fuckwolf, The Wolfgang Press, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Wolfstone, The Wolfnote...If there are any more that we haven't mentioned here, let us know! [says Sea Wolf on their MySpace page]
MySpace is also where you can stream some more songs by the LA artist who is playing Mercury Lounge tonight (Nov 5) with Luke Rathborne, Tiny Vipers (Sub Pop), and Essie Jain (Badabing). Tiny Vipers is also playing Union Hall in Brooklyn on November 15th. Sea Wolf's Leaves in the River came out in September on Dangerbird.
Alex Church, the fertile songwriting mind behind Sea Wolf (rather tellingly, the moniker was culled from the title a Jack London novel), has a firm grip on the shadowy site of Americana. His project's debut LP, the Phil Ek-produced Leaves in the River, is a lush, darkly romantic set piece that has arrived just in time for the autumn. [Prefix]
Alex Chuch used to be in Irving. Sea Wolf just got finished touring with Silversun Pickups and then Nada Surf. All current tour dates below...

Tiny Vipers

Tiny Vipers is Jesy Fortino, the 24-year-old Seattle singer/songwriter and former burrito employee who finds making music under a different name allows her audience to put distance between her and her songs. The lovely soundscapes of Hands Across the Void, Tiny Vipers' studio debut and first release for the Sub Pop label, hit store shelves late last month. [SPIN]
Not only is Tiny Vipers playing a free Sound Fix in-store in Brooklyn on August 23rd with Camera Obscura, she's also on the Papercuts / Beach House bill at Union Hall on the 24th (and tickets are still available). Camera Obscura (as you know) is also playing on the 24th - for free at South Street Seaport. All tour dates below...
