Williamsburg's Monster Island arts center, home of Secret Project Robot, is throwing its 3rd annual Monster Island Arts and Music Festival Block Party Saturday, Sept 6 from 2pm-10pm.
The not-for-profit on the corner of Kent Ave and Metropolitan claims to be "the only block in this section of Brooklyn that has not been rezoned for high-rise condominiums."
Bands playing the free show include Oneida, Golden Triangle, Ex Models, Red Dawn II, The Trilateral Commission, K-Holes, The Gimme Five,
2 surprise bands booked by building mate and NYC phenomenon Todd P. Cassie, Katy, & Ali and Psychothriller.
Psych-rockers Oneida, recently back from a tour in support of "Preteen Weaponry" (the first part in the "Thank Your Parents" triptych the band is releasing on Jagjaguwar/Brah), and also playing the free Seaport Music show this Friday, will be recording a new single for Social Registry during the show ("Limited to 35 tickets - first come first serve").
The East Village Radio Festival at South Street Festival is the same day. Full line-up of Monster Island events, and some tour dates, below:

Best Friends Forever @ a Todd P show in Austin - Mar 12, 2008 (piratehat)
hi friends!Check out some fof their quirky MP3s above (including both of the songs Todd was talking about). Check out more tour dates below...
I've been looking forward to the 2 shows this week for a long time!
If you've come out to 1 of my shows in the last year you recognize this phenomenal song I play btwn the bands a lot, it goes... "Eisenhower is the father of the interstate highway system..." There's another 1 too, that goes "Put your hand in my backpocket, as if it were your own backpocket..."
BOTH those great tunes are by Minneapolis's BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, 2 ladies & their bud Joe on drums, playing some of the catchiest, most joyful, most quirky sexy pop songs being made in the US of A right now.
BEST FRIENDS FOREVER play -2- terrific all ages show lineups in NYC this week!

====> TUESDAY 7/5 @ HARKET MOTEL <====It took me a while to take Fiasco seriously. Well, it took me until I finally saw them live a few months ago when they opened for No Age @ Bowery Ballroom. I guess I didn't want to pay attention because they were lumped into the "kids rock" thing. It never bothered me that one of them has a really cool dad.

Chairlift called out sick, so Soiled Mattress and the Springs played the first set of the day at the Yard on Saturday. It also happened to be their last show ever. They ended their set by putting the band's banner inside a flaming trashcan and setting fireworks inside it and giving out free t-shirts to the crowd. Despite wind that was causing the main stage awning to fall off and some technical difficulties, Soft Circle played a decent set. Ninja Sonik was supposed to play next, but was running late so Knyfe Hyts went on instead. More pictures below...

As many people pointed out, Todd P put together a last minute show at Death by Audio tonight (July 8) featuring Meneguar and Woods (who share members) and Vivian Girls and King Darves. The show is a Woods/Meneguar going away party. They're going away to Europe as you can see in the tour dates below...
This is not longer happening today...
----ACOUSTIC-BBQ-WEATHER-UPDATE------> ---- BBQ CANCELLED ----- sorry, it will be rescheduled! Though the sun is out now, a quick look at the weather websites and the hour-by-hour forecasts and the radar shows there are hella storms coming our way this afternoon. Please feel free to go down the park on the island (or any park, anywhere!) and have your own picnic and strum some acoustic guitars, but the official acoustic bbq is going to be postponed. apologies!!!!! [Todd P]The very first free Sunday Pool Party of the summer starts at 2pm at McCarren Park today. That is still happening (so far). The full lineup is The Loved Ones, J. Roddy & the Business, and The Hold Steady. I hope the rain doesn't end up being that bad.

Duh. I forgot to mention that the Belaire show on Saturday at Market Hotel is being headlined by Vivian Girls (June 28, 2008). You'll also find them at Todd P's unamplified BBQ on Sunday. Their last NYC show was the infamous VICE party at Santos. More pictures from that and all tour dates below...
Titus Andronicus @ Market Hotel (more by Leia Jospe)
Ponytail @ Knitting Factory (more by Ryan Muir)
Abe Vigoda AND Ponytail are playing with Titus Andronicus at that previously announced July 13th show at Mercury Lounge in NYC. Tickets are still on sale. But that's just one of many shows all three of these bands have coming up.
Ponytail are also playing the free After the Jump show happening at Music Hall of Williamsburg this Saturday afternoon (June 21st), but not before playing a "Less Artists More Condos" party tonight (Friday June 20). And while they're here from Baltimore, why not fit in as many shows as possible. Ponytail are also playing a second show on Saturday at Silent Barn:
==== SATURDAY 6/21 --EARLY-7PM!-- @ SILENT BARN ====Deer Tick is also playing that Rooftop Films show in Manhattan tonight (Friday), and will be back to play Southpaw on June 30th.
:::: DEER TICK
:::::: White Hinterland
:::::::: Sal Feathers
Titus Andronicus are also playing After The Jump on Saturday, but they're playing the part of the festival that costs $10 and happens later inside Music Hall of Williamsburg. Health are playing that show too.
Myopenbar Presents:Then Ponytail is playng the Yard AGAIN eight days later - at the huge, crazy, Todd P show that Titus Andronicus and Abe Vigoda are also playing. This outdoor show is one day before the show all three of them play Mercury Lounge (see above), and it's one day after Abe Vigoda plays the Seaport with No Age (who may or may not be the special guest at any one of these other events).
July 4th, 1pm - 9pm
Special Guest: 80's Hardcore (Gavin McInness and Terry Richardson) and
DJ Dirty Fingers
complimentary PBR and Southern Comfort
free treats from the Ice Cream Man
The Yard, Gowanus, Brooklyn
THEN, Ponytail plays The Yard AGAIN 10 days after their last Yard show - this time as part of a tour with Joan of Arc which also includes a show at Knitting Factory one day later (for those counting, that makes 8 upcoming Ponytail shows in NYC - 3 of which are at the Yard). Make that nine: tickets are already on sale for an August 23rd show at Knitting Factory with Don Caballero.
We're not finished. Titus Andronicus are also playing Knitting Factory on June 27th, and a free show with Obits at the East River Amphitheater the next day, AND another show at 123 House in Brooklyn later that night, AND at Maxwell's with The Dirtbombs on July 11th (two days before they play that Mercury Lounge show that started this post) (and one day before that big Todd P show at the Yard). All tour dates for everyone below....

Henry Joseph Darger (April 12[?], 1892-April 13, 1973) was a reclusive American writer and artist who worked as a janitor in Chicago, Illinois. He has become famous for his posthumously discovered 15,145-page fantasy manuscript called The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, along with several hundred drawings and watercolor paintings illustrating the story. Darger's work has become one of the most celebrated examples of outsider art. [Wikipedia]
There are a lot of bands named after Darger's Vivian Girls. Brooklyn's Vivian Girls are the ones commonly found playing shows presented by Todd P like the one pictured here in which they opened for Love is All at Market Hotel on Saturday (June 14, 2008). Vivian Girls are also playing Santos Party House on Thursday with The Muslims. The Muslims are also playing Market Hotel on Tuesday. Vivian Girls play Market Hotel again on June 28th. More pictures from Saturday's show below....

---> SHOW IS NOT @ RIDGEWOOD TEMPLE!!
new location: MARKET HOTEL - 1142 MYRTLE AVE @ BDWY - BKLYN - JMZ TRAIN TO MYRTLE - 8PM - $10 - 2NITE JUNE 5TH
here's what happened: due to recent fights at the venue's weekend parties, the 83rd Precinct & the NYS Liquor Commission have suddenly, temporarily banned -all- alcohol from the Ridgewood Temple - we can't sell it (we had applied & paid for a license) and you can't bring it in yourself. We went to pick up our license to sell today and this is the news we got! Faced with the prospect of a completely dry Black Lips show (that wouldn't work now, would it?), we've decided to relocate the show. Sorry, this all happened with no notice! S'OK THO - THIS SHOW WILL BE AWESOME & MARKET HOTEL IS TERRIFIC!!

"Stairwell is a small independent gallery in Providence founded in January of 2006 and run by Haley O'Connor and Natalie Purkey. The gallery is deeply rooted in Providence's art community, and prioritizes curatorial creativity and support of all the artists that it works with. Building relationships between artists, curators, and the larger community of Providence is privileged over commercial gain. If you have ever shown your work at Stairwell, played a show there, come to an opening and eaten the homemade food that the curators have prepared, or stopped in to visit, you know that this is a rare and magical venture. As such, it is inevitably risky. After a car accident in Los Angeles a few months ago (in which, thank goodness, nobody was hurt, but a hybrid rental car was nearly totaled) Haley is now deeply in debt to her insurance company. Although Stairwell has been growing in every way, this financial setback creates a significant obstacle, which we think that the community has the power to remove, or at least mitigate. It is time for all of us who have enjoyed the expansive generosity of Stairwell to return the favor and give back a little to support this singular and inspiring gallery." [Todd P]

Ed Shrader & Dan Deacon @ Ridgewood Temple (April 17, 2008 (Jonny Leather)
....Moments before Deacon's exhilarating performance--which got someone as tightly wound as myself to dance--four Hispanic dudes entered the venue. Before that moment, I had felt like my companion and I were the ones who didn't fit in, but these guys in their expensive baggy clothes obviously weren't part of the intended clientele or demographic for this event.I missed all of that because I was at the Cloud Cult show at Union Hall instead. As far as I know, nothing was stolen from there, but I did overhear some stock tips that turned out bad, and I almost got hit in the toe with a bocce ball (just kidding).
Naturally, I was prejudiced against them, suspect of their motives for entering into this hipster Temple party. With the crowd, in tight, circled around Deacon, the party began, with everyone in the place dancing along. Even these "thugs" were dancing and seemed to be enjoying it.
Of course they were into it. We were easy prey. The geeky, scrawny white kids--many of which looked ridiculous--had their backs were turned, allowing these "thugs" to easily rummage through our bags that we naively expected to be safely stashed. My lady and I had let down our guards, in order to loosen up and have fun, but also because of our unwillingness to hold prejudiced feelings towards people based solely on how they looked. Though we were naïve enough to set down our bags, we kept a watchful eye on the culprits. Those watchful eyes watched those young assholes steal all of her cash (leaving her without a dime for food for the entire rest of the month) and a credit card. We acted just in time to grab our bags before they made with the big heist. The thief who had stolen my friend's money had his hand on my camera bag, while we plucked it away without confrontation.
We quickly made our way to security to warn of the theft that had been taking place. The culprits were fully aware that they had been caught, and quickly made their way to an escape. While the security staff could have easily taken action and saved a lot of kids from the disappointment of losing a lot of money and valuables, they decided to let the thieves pass by unquestioned.....
