I'm not sure what his first day back was, but after a short break, Jim Campilongo is back in his Monday night residency spot at The Living Room on the LES. Tony Scherr and Tony Mason will be there too, now through Oct 31st at least.

Jim Campilongo also plays in the band the Little Willies (so does Norah Jones). They have three dates scheduled for October, including one at the Bell House which is on sale now. All of Jim's dates are listed below...

Justin Bond & Doveman @ LPR (more by Dominick Matrangelo)
Justin Bond and Doveman

"It looks like another one of the city's shadowy artistic demoiselles is about to take a turn in the limelight. If anyone is the talk of New York City at the moment it is Justin Bond. A tall, blond, transgender cabaret signer, Bond worked his way up through the San Francisco and New York performance undergrounds as part of a duo lounge act called Kiki and Herb. The act, which centered around Bond's character Kiki, an aging, bitter, alcoholic singer who was as poignant, raucous and funny as she was tragic, developed a cult and critical following which led them to Carnegie Hall and a stint on Broadway, earning Bond a Tony nomination. Now he has a much-awaited debut album [out now], and he'll be performing his new solo show at the Bowery Ballroom to celebrate." [Another]
Justin Bond will take on Bowery Ballroom TONIGHT to celebrate Dendrophile, his new LP out NOW. Tickets are still available. After the show, keep the good times rollin' at Woahmone at Von, the official afterparty.

Support at Bowery will come from album contributor Doveman, who has another THREE 'salon' dates coming at Le Poisson Rouge as part of the ongoing Burgundy Stain Sessions that saw him teaming with names like Sam Amidon, Glen Hansard, Norah Jones, Tegan & Sara, St Vincent, Justin Bond, and others in previous sessions. No word on the guests at these shows yet, but tickets are available for shows on April 23rd, May 26th and June 24th.

Doveman will also be at LPR on April 26th, but as one of the "friends" listed for one of the nights of the Jesse Harris & Friends: "Through the Night" Series at the venue. On that night, the "Through The Night Band, a four-piece ensemble combining rock/brazilian/folk/jazz" will play the songs of Jesse Harris alongside Bill Dobrow, Guilherme Monteiro, Mauro Refosco, and Sasha Dobson. Tickets are on sale. The "Through The Night" series continues weekly in April, and includes a show TONIGHT with The Cosmo Band featuring Larry Goldings, Anthony Wilson, Tony Scherr, and others (tickets). Other upcoming dates include April 12 with The Through The Night Band featuring Bill Dobrow and special guests Norah Jones (his Grammy friend) and Vinicius Cantuária among others; and April 19th with The Cosmo Band featuring Kenny Wollesen, Eivind Opsvik, and special guests Tony Scherr and Antonio Villeroy among others.

Dylan

Bob Dylan by Greil Marcus: Writings 1968-2010 was recently released, just in time for the holidays...

"The book begins in Berkeley in 1968, and ends with a piece on Dylan's show at the University of Minnesota--his very first appearance at his alma mater--on election night 2008. In between are moments of euphoric discovery: From Marcus's liner notes for the 1967 Basement Tapes (pop music's most famous bootlegged archives) to his exploration of Dylan's reimagining of the American experience in the 1997 Time Out of Mind. And rejection; Marcus's Rolling Stone piece on Dylan's album Self Portrait--often called the most famous record review ever written--began with "What is this shit?" and led to his departure from the magazine for five years. Marcus follows not only recordings but performances, books, movies, and all manner of highways and byways in which Bob Dylan has made himself felt in our culture.

Together the dozens of pieces collected here comprise a portrait of how, throughout his career, Bob Dylan has drawn upon and reinvented the landscape of traditional American song, its myths and choruses, heroes and villains. They are the result of a more than forty-year engagement between an unparalleled singer and a uniquely acute listener."

You can buy it at Amazon, or maybe pick up a copy at the Strand tonight, 12/1, where Greil will be speaking in conversation with Stephen Hazan Arnoff, Director of the 14th Street Y, "and special guests Matt and Eleanor Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces, who will perform a few songs."

Eleanor & Matt Friedberger will also be on hand at the 14th St Y and Le Poisson Rouge on Sunday, December 5th, for a day of Dylan events. The concert at LPR is this:

The Golden Palominos, a multifarious project led by drummer Anton Fier, got together for their first shows in 23 years in May. The group, fronted again by singers Syd Straw and Robert Kidney, will be performing on September 10th at City Winery. Tickets are on sale.

Also in the group's lineup are guitarists Jim Campilongo and Tony Scherr, who will be opening the show with their own trios. Meanwhile you can catch Tony at three Mondays this month at Living Room, and Jim at two of them. They're both there every Monday in September too

City Winery

In addition to a functioning winery and 21,000 square foot restaurant/event space, City Winery is also equipped with a full stage, state-of-the-art sound system and in-house A/V-making it one of the most interesting venues to ever hit Manhattan. Whether you are planning a private party, a public concert or an intimate evening of music and/or the spoken word, City Winery's stage and staff can accommodate a variety of live performances and cultural activities that will appeal to sophisticated New Yorkers, and wine connoisseurs, alike.
Unfortunately, "to purchase tickets to any of the upcoming shows or classes, you must first become a Vinofile member." I don't think you need to be a member to always go there - for instance you could just be a VIP at the upcoming REM Carnegie Hall event, but I don't know. I also doubt you'll need to be a member to go to the Blackoutsabbath Rufus Wainwright show happening there on March 4th (no tickets for that yet) (for now Rufus is focused on the upcoming McGarrigle Christmas Hour show).

All known upcoming City Winery events are listed below...

Jenny Scheinman, band & Nels Cline in Chicago - Feb 2007 (CRED)
Nels Cline & Jenny Scheinman

Drawing from a deep reservoir of musicians, violinist Jenny Scheinman has experimented with innumerable permutations at her regular Tuesday night Barbès gigs. This past April she found something special when combining upright bassist Todd Sickafoose, guitarist Nels Cline and drummer Jim Black (the first meeting of Cline and Black), so she brought them back together for a mini-tour, stopping at Joe’s Pub for two sets (Aug. 6th). Her music’s inherent lyricism, with folk and traditional influences, tamped the wilder impulses of Cline and Black, who both creatively served the songs. [NYC review @ All About Jazz]
Check out a video from that show on YouTube. As many already know, one of Nels Cline's other jobs (since 2004) is playing guitar with Wilco.

Norah Jones & Jenny Scheinman @ Living Room"Jenny Scheinman, violinist/composer, was voted the #1 Rising Star Violinist in the 2005, 2004 and 2003 Downbeat Critics' Polls, has performed and recorded extensively with Bill Frisell as well as Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux, Nels Cline, Vinicius Cantuaria, Marc Ribot and Myra Melford." [Jenny's biography]

"Her carny blend of jazz, Americana and rock finds its closest kin in the music of Tom Waits, former Bay Area neighbors Tin Hat and fellow roots-jazz hybridizer Bill Frisell, who has collaborated often with her." [Philly.com]

"Busy downtown violinist Jenny Scheinman’s records tend to get filed in the jazz bin, and she works out her more pop-oriented inclinations at the Living Room. In her semiregular hang at Barbès, anything goes." [Time Out]

It's that 'everything goes' attitude by a talented musician that makes Jenny's regular Tuesday night shows at the intimate Barbes in Park Slope so special - not to mention the regular cast of super-talented musicians that regularly play with her at the shows while she sings and plays violin.

One of those special collaborators is jazz guitarist Tony Scherr, and that's exactly who will be joining Jenny at her next very special appearance at the free BrooklynVegan party upstairs at Pianos, NYC - on Wednesday October 17, 2007 (4:45 pm - right before Bon Iver). Stay tuned for more details.

Thanks to Araneo for the above picture of Jenny and Norah at The Living Room in 2005.

“It’s weird,” she says, finding a surreal humor in it. “Probably George Bush has heard me, come to think of it. He’s probably heard me on Norah Jones’ record. If 20 million records are sold, they’ve got to get to people’s ears you’d never imagine.” [All About Jazz]
Among countless other things, Jenny also plays violin on the new Lucinda Williams album. The MP3s above are clips from her own 2005 album entitled 12 Songs
