The Moog Sound Lab is a video series where bands and artists are invited to perform in the Moog Music factory in Asheville, North Carolina. With an arsenal of Moog equipment at their disposal, the musicians offer radically new takes on their material.

The first in this video series: Toro Y Moi, who perform their single "So Many Details" from Anything in Return. Using such synths as the Little Phatty, and the company's flagship Minimoog Voyager, Chaz Bundick and crew deliver a much mellower, soulful version of the track. For more info, check out the Moog Sound Lab site. Look for Toro Y Moi in Austin next week if you're heading to SXSW. Moog has a showcase there as well, with Austra, The Soft Moon, Xeno & Oaklander, Kontravoid, Survive and Ssleeperhold on March 16 at Elysium.

You can watch the Toro Y Moi Moog Sound Lab video, and check out more pics from the session, below.

Passion Pit at MSG earlier this month (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Passion Pit

Camp Bisco is known for a long history of booking jam bands and dance music, but has branched out in recent years. This year's lineup has an especially interesting slew of non-jam. Camp Bisco happens about a month after Passion Pit and Animal Collective both play Bonnaroo in Tennessee, Passion Pit plays Firefly in Delaware, and AnCo plays Governors Ball in NYC.

3-Day general admission passes for Camp Bisco are on sale now. Full lineup below...

Toro Y Moi

The strong "Anything in Return" (Carpark), Mr. Bundick's recently released third full-length album, can't help but feel like a response to the womb he was born of. It's by far the most muscular of his work, even if his version of muscle is a thin sinew, only lightly flexed. Still, it's not chill. Not totally, at least.

His show at Webster Hall on Wednesday night highlighted the difficulties of shaking loose of the calm and moving toward squall.

Even at its most raging, Toro y Moi's music is an insular proposition, which in a room the size of this one, has its limitations.

At times, the mood was shamanistic -- there was smoke in the air, and the light show was throbbingly vivid. When Mr. Bundick went into psychedelic-soul freakout mode, it had moments of transporting power. - [NY Times]

Chillwave survivor Toro Y Moi rolled through NYC this week on his current tour with Wild Belle and Dog Bite, playing Webster Hall on Wednesday (2/13, as reviewed by the Times, above) and Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (2/15). Backed some sleek, '80s-inspired lighting, Chaz and his band tore through a good chunk of his brand new Anything in Return and select cuts from his two previous LPs.

, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA.

Sinkane at Public Assembly - 10/20/12
BrooklynVegan Saturday Day Party

NYC rap crew Ratking and funky synth pop project Sinkane both played a number of CMJ shows last week, including the BrooklynVegan day party on Saturday (10/20) which they were both on. Pictures of Ratking's and Sinkane's set from that party are in this post.

The two groups will team up again in NYC this week for an in-store at the Puma Store (521 Broadway) on Thursday (10/25) with DJ Physical Therapy. The show is 21+, runs from 7 PM to 10 PM, and you can RSVP to rsvp@joaonewyork.com. The flier for this show is below.

Ratking, as mentioned, also recently dropped a remix of King Krule's "Octopus" which you can stream below.

Sinkane, who since played a record release show at Brooklyn Bowl last night (10/23), has other upcoming shows in NYC, including one with !!! at Music Hall of Williamsburg (12/13) and one with ESG at Bowery Electric (11/1). They'll also be supporting Yeasayer (who main member Ahmed Gallab once drummed for) on their upcoming tour which hits the NYC area on November 13 at the Capitol Theatre (tickets). They'll also support Toro y Moi on their recently announced tour but won't be at the Webster Hall show (2/13) (Wild Belle and Dog Bite will).

A list of all Sinkane dates, a stream of Ratking's King Krule remix, and more pictures of Ratking and Sinkane from the BV day party (sponsored by Sailor Jerry, PBR, Mercy, and Raw Revolution), below...

NY Mag

Grizzly Bear are on the cover of the new issue of NY Magazine, which makes two weeks in a row that Brooklyn was prominently featured.

Despite making it into Billboard's Top 10 with their new album, Shields, the band still aren't making a lot of money.

Check out pictures from the show they just played in Chicago with Lower Dens.

And speaking of Brooklyn, get ready for Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas.

"The Artwork of Robert Pollard & Tobin Sprout" is opening in Brooklyn soon. Meanwhile check out our recent Guided by Voices pictures from both Austin and the Deluna Fest in Florida.

Crystal Castles and HEALTH play Roseland on Wednesday (10/3). We're giving away tickets here and on our Facebook too.

Also on Wednesday, M83 plays Hammerstein Ballroom and we're giving away tickets to that on Facebook too. Tickets are also still on sale.

Another Facebook contest: win tickets to see Raveonettes and Melody's Echo Chamber at Webster Hall on Friday (10/5).

The Compact Disc turns 30 years old today. The first CD pressed in America was Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA (though Billy Joe's 52nd Street came out in Japan before that). What was the first CD you bought?

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen, Kenny's Castaways, where he used to play is hosting their final show tonight.

Producer and TV On the Radio member Dave Sitek has launched Federal Prism, "a new record label where Sitek will personally record, mix, produce, and release a series of limited edition 12-inch vinyl picture discs with a uniquely curator-driven perspective. The vinyl will be limited to 500 numbered copies each with a jacket personally hand silkscreened by Sitek."

Federal Prism's first release is "Destroyer" by Telepathe. "The b-side of the vinyl will feature a remix by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor with Alessandro Cortini and Atticus Ross. Sitek adds, "I told Trent I was starting my own label and would love to have him remix something on the first release. I sent him the session and before he actually said 'YES', he sent back this mighty dark space that he, Alessandro and Atticus had built for me! I was shocked and am certain I will have to keep ripping them off for years!"" It's on sale now.

Speaking of Trent Reznor, he says his his band How To Destroy Angels, have "formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP."

Scary: Ryan Adams revealed via Twitter: "Recording a track with my new pal @deadmau5 today. Sounds like BladeRunner starring Don Henley."

More scary: As if it wasn't bad enough that Bruno Mars has been announced as the host of the 10/20 episode of SNL, they're letting him be the musical performer for that episode too!

But here's some good news: Now That's What I Call Music 83 will reportedly be the last in the series.

AfroPunk 2012
AfroPunk 2012

Hardcore punk rockers Cerebal Ballsy performed Saturday with a ferocity that commanded the seemingly peaceful crowd into a mosh pit. Later in the evening, the atmosphere switched into a groovy hipster paradise for all to enjoy as Erykah Badu jammed. The next day, Janelle Monae put on a performance with enough energy to power Manhattan. The performers were awesome - all of them - but they were merely a reflection of the movement known as Afropunk and the people of it.

The crowd was multi-everything - multi-cultural, multi-colored, multi-faceted, and multi-fashioned. - [Allhiphip.com]

Here's another set of photos from Day 2 of the 2012 Afro Punk Fest which featured a ton of great music -- all for free -- not to mention skateboarding and BMX competitions.

Our first set of Day 2 pictures is here, and you can see pics from Day 1 here and here. More pics from Day 2 are below.

AfroPunk 2012

Slamming together categories -- and, when appropriate, bodies -- is the ever-expanding mission of the annual Afro-Punk Festival, which returned last weekend to Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

It was an event summed up in action by one of its returning headliners, Janelle Monáe. She's an indefatigable song-and-dance bandleader who gleefully draws on African-American showmen like Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown and even Cab Calloway as her lyrics dip into science fiction. Her finale, "Come Alive (War of the Roses)," had a jitterbug-ready beat while Ms. Monáe crowd-surfed like a punk-rocker: off the stage, into the audience and back onstage for a few more snappy steps. - [NY Times]

Day 2 (8/26) of the 2012 Afro-Punk Fest was an incredibly stacked line-up, with TV on the Radio, Janelle Monáe (who was introduced by Pharrell Williams), Reggie Watts and Toro Y Moi just to name a few. Pictures from Sunday are in this post. Pictures of Day 1 (8/25) are here and here.

On the Sunday (8/26), the Green Stage will be headlined by TV on the Radio following sets by Toro y Moi and Reggie Watts and the Red Stage will be headlined by Janelle Monae.

Speaking of TV on the Radio, Kyp Malone's solo project Rain Machine has a NYC show coming up, that will take place soon after Afropunk at Union Pool on September 1 with Soft Location and Slowdance. No other Rain Machine dates to report at the moment.

Sinkane, who also plays Afropunk Fest, continues his residency at Zebulon tonight (8/20).

Lollapalooza (more by Grant MacAllister)
Lolla

Chicago Sun Times reports:

Lollapalooza has revealed its official 2012 list of performers -- a typically wide-ranging smorgasbord of genres and styles topped by nearly a dozen mainstage headliners: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, freshly reunited bands Black Sabbath and At the Drive-In, the Black Keys, Jack White, Florence + The Machine, the Shins and Passion Pit, plus spotlighted electronic music including Swedish house titan Avicii, French dance duo Justice and DJ-producer Bassnectar.

The annual music festival is scheduled for Aug. 3-5 in Chicago's Grant Park.

Rumored lineups have circulated widely, as they usually do, and Lollapalooza itself stoked the speculation in recent weeks via a series of CTA and online advertisements that seemed to hint at who would be playing.

The ads featured lyrics from such acts as Sigur Ros, Santigold, Jack White, Kimbra, Twin Shadow, the Weeknd, Bloc Party and more -- all bands that wound up on the bill.

Check out the full list below...

Moogfest

"One needn't be among the electronic music faithful to take away positive feelings toward Moogfest, Asheville's yearly electronic mecca. Since migrating from a single-night event in New York City to what was arguably the cradle of electronic music innovation after being settled by Robert Moog, Moogfest has been as edifying as it is entertaining. Few festivals defy their attendees to completely reassess how they listen to music in the way that a weekend at Moogfest does. The gray matter-frying, booty-shaking synth jams raged until early morning all across downtown Asheville, but oftentimes the lessons in musical futurology were just as fulfilling." [Yes Weekly]

Toro y Moi

Toro y Moi is releasing the Freaking Out EP on Tuesday (9/13) via Carpark. The EP is the followup to his full length, Underneath the Pine, which came out earlier this year on the same label. You can grab two tracks, "All Alone" and "Saturday Love" (an Alexander O'Neal & Cherelle cover), in exchange for your email address below. Though both will remind you of the disco-y pop of Underneath the Pine, the introductory synth frills on "All Alone" tell you right away that Freaking Out isn't an EP of leftover album tracks.

Toro y Moi's previously announced tour begins this week and hits Webster Hall on September 14 with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Ava Luna. Tickets are still available. All dates are listed below.

We're also giving away a signed vinyl copy of Underneath the Pine and a pair of tickets to the Webster Hall show. Details on how to win, along with MP3 widgets, album art, tracklist and updated tour dates below...
