Vektor at Saint Vitus, Aug 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Vektor

Always something up their sleeve, Saint Vitus has rolled out another set of bangers for the new year. We already discussed shows with Torche, Deafheaven/Sannhet, Yob and Woe, but here's a few more shows to help wipe away your paycheck.

Vektor will expertly unleash their razor-sharp progressive thrash on the crowds at Saint Vitus on a special Valentines Day (2/14), when they team with Behold... the Arctopus for a show at the venue. Tickets are on sale. The show is one of only a few dates scheduled for the now-Philadelphia thrash crew, check out all other dates below.

Brutal Truth, Total Fucking Destruction, Psychic Limb and one band still TBA will play Saint Vitus on March 16. Tickets are on sale. The dates are the only shows scheduled for all three presently.

Crossover thrash legends DRI will hit the road for a string of dates in February, touring the US and eventually making it to Saint Vitus on 2/26. Tickets are on sale, and the full slate of dates is below.

All tour dates -- plus video -- are below.

DTV (Direct to Video) packaging for the novel and the disc
DTV

Soundtracks were all the rage in the 90s. Many of them left much to be desired, but a select few left an indelible mark on my young mind... namely records like the Judgement Night soundtrack ("Just Another Victim!"), Singles, and The Crow. So when I heard that bulldozing Motorhead-as-black-metal quartet Wolvhammer had taken on "Burn" by The Cure from The Crow soundtrack, I was more than intrigued. Stream "Burn" below; it's definitely an unexpected melodic turn from such a piledriving metallic workhorse.

"Burn" is going from one soundtrack to another. Wolvhammer's version is for the forthcoming soundtrack to he Andrew Bonazelli novel DTV (Direct to Video) which surfaces via Handshake Inc next week (3/30):

The book is a super-cool fusion of literary prowess and action-movie bravado, and though fully aware of the inherent, unintentional comedy found in the genre, Bonazelli has avoided the tongue-in-cheek route, instead crafting a story that celebrates the machismo, animal magnetism and culture of American action movies from the '80s and '90s. The novel itself is a brilliantly fun and poignant read, and could do for action movies what the nouvelle vague did for Hitchcock and Orson Welles.
Wolvhammer joins names like Total Fucking Destruction, The Atlas Moth, Cretin, Liberteer's Matthew Widener, The Austerity Program, members of Zombi, Early Graves and more to contribute everything from new tracks to "covers of music from such films as Robocop, Double Impact, The Running Man and Out for Justice". Sounds about as amazing as the packaging, which looks like a VHS tape (above).

Speaking of bad film and fun bands, Graf Orlock (who are also on DTV) ALSO have a new release in Los Angeles which comes with three different covers inspired by the film Heat.

There are 600 copies of this bastard, broken down into three different covers. The covers will have actual me-shot bullets holes in them, so technically, each is a 1/1 because even though i have ridiculously accurate and tight firing patterns, no two are the same. For you wieners trolling discogs, they are all black vinyl.
Order your "exclusive copy" at Vitriol.

DTV contributors Wolvhammer and The Atlas Moth will be in LA on March 31st to play a Scion label showcase along with Yob, Loss and Pallbearer. Entry is FREE with RSVP. Yob will be in NYC in May, as will Loss/Pallbearer.

Listen to both versions of "Burn" below...

Brutal Truth at Brooklyn Masonic Temple (more by Justina Villanueva)
Brutal Truth

The previously discussed Phobia show at The Charleston on March 10th just got a little more interesting with the addition of Total Fucking Destruction, aka the Richard Hoak of Brutal Truth project. TFD released their latest LP, Hater, on 2/15 via Translation Loss.

Meanwhile, Phobia is preparing to release a split 7" with long-standing Irish death-dealers Abbaddon Incarnate. The split, due via Underground Movement, includes seven tracks with Phobia committing four, and AI dropping the rest including "Cthonic Sacrifice" which makes its first appearance above. To purchase a 7", send 8.5 Euro ($11.50/7.20 GBP) to ianlawless [at] gmail [cot] com, along with your name, mailing address, and desired color (black or white vinyl). Album art and the song stream is below.

Richmond will represent again on March 5th as Lord By Fire and Windhand have added a show at Acheron. Lord By Fire is currently offering their sludgy-doom record for free at their bandcamp, or you can stream it below. Windhand may be fresh on the scene, but these ex-members of The Might Could and Facedowninshit rip out some fierce old-school doom riffery. Get there!

That Phobia/AI art, and the full list of suggested upcoming NYC metal shows below...

The oh-so-Brutal Truth
Brutal Truth

Pummeling, fist-pumping, extreme grindcore was the order of the day at Europa in Brooklyn on Sunday (5/17). It was day two of the Auditory Assault Festival, and the godfathers of modern grind, Brutal Truth, met up with the mighty Misery Index, Rotten Sound (who released one of my fave records of 2008), Crowpath (them too), Total Fucking Destruction (with Richard Hoak of BT), Pigsty, Jig-ai, Sulaco, and others. Many bands on the AAF roster were making their first pit stop towards their eventual destination, Maryland Death Fest, which goes down this weekend in Baltimore with Bolt Thrower, Mayhem, Pestilence, Napalm Death, and about 50 of their closest friends.

The cavalcade of NYC shows surrounding MDF continues as Antigama / Complete Failure impacts Europa TONIGHT (5/20), Mayhem / Marduk / Cephalic Carnage / Cattle Decapitation Lair Of The Minotaur / Withered hit Irving TOMORROW (5/21, tickets here), Wolves In The Throne Room hit Europa on FRIDAY (5/22, tickets here) and then again on TUESDAY (5/26, tickets), Trap Them at Lit Lounge on MONDAY (5/25), and last, but certainly not least, Unearthly Trance / The Endless Blockade / Magrudergrind at The Charleston on 5/28.

Brutal Truth will be back in Brooklyn on July 31st with Pig Destroyer and Repulsion, who are playing ALL of the influential Horrified, as part of The Blackened Music Series at Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Tickets are now on sale.

Tickets are also now on sale for our own showcase happening at Europa on June 14th.

Swede badasses GADGET in 2007.
Gadget

I definitely have been going on and on and on about the awesome Maryland Deathfest, and while my stoke-ability level is still tres tres high, we now have have something closer to home to look forward to from the very same team behind MDF! Behold the Auditory Assault Festival with it's holy-shit list of grind badasses:

Gadget (Sweden)
Sayyadina (Sweden)

Cattle Decapitation live @ Gilman, photo by Taija Lynn
Cattle Decapitation

Cattle Decapitation have announced dates in support of their new record, The Harvest Floor due on 1/20/09. Supported by Psyopus, Book Of Black Earth, and Gigan, full tour dates are below, but no NYC just yet.

Adding insult on top of insult to injury, Maryland Death Fest have added powerviolence bad-asses Despise You (with Phil Vera of Crom), as well as grinders Pigsty. This is on top of Mayhem, Bolt Thrower, Enslaved and soooo many others... Unfortunately, Repulsion have cancelled their appearance.

Vitamin XNeed a fix of fun, skull-splitting hardcore? Vitamin X have dropped their new record, Full Scale Assault on Tankcrimes and it is one awe-inspiring slab of lightning riffery and old-school hardcore punk produced by none other than Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studios. Sporting ultra-suh-weeeet artwork by John Baizley of Baroness, the band has been kind enough to drop off a pair of MP3s from the record... check out "Deal With it" featuring John Brannon of Negative Approach and "You Suck" downloadable above and pick up the album here.

How many times has a headliner you dug dropped off a bill, and you were actually pleased with the results? In a bit of shuffling, Doomriders have dropped off their bill with Tombs at Union Pool on 12/20 (frown), BUT Bloodhorse (who are working on a new record), Keelhaul(!), and Acid Tiger (Ben from Cave-in, Converge) have been added! So Keelhaul in NYC, huh? Exciting, and it sounds like they have more than just the show on their agenda...

We are going to Brooklyn to record another cd with Andrew Schneider in December. Yee haw.-[Keelhaul myspace]
NOICE! Meanwhile, look for Tombs to play a show at Death By Audio on Dec 6th, play a few shows opening for Don Caballero at both Maxwell's and Europa, and embark on a short tour in the new year with Dysrhythmia. Full Keelhaul and Tombs dates are below.

Doomers My Dying Bride have revealed details of their new album, For Lies I Sire due in 2009 via Peaceville! Spanning nine tracks and recorded with producer Mags, vocalist Aaron Stainhorpe recently discussed the new record with Beyond The Dark Horizon.

Acrid PlainsSaros, the Bay Area blackened prog metal band contructed from members of the almighty Weakling and Amber Asylum, will drop their new album Acrid Plains on Profound Lore 2/17/09. Album art is below and check out the new MP3, "Reversion" available for download above.

Mammoth Grinder are scheduled to rage through the tri-state in the new year. The trio will be in town on Jan 3rd to double up.. playing shows at ABC No Rio (matinee) AND The Charleston (night) in support of their long-player Rage & Ruin and No Results 7" due together on Assassinated Records. Alternating between thundering doom and crusty hardcore, check out heavily doom-oriented "God is Stuck in a Black Hole " from Rage & Ruin, downloadable above.

Gracial death-doomers Hooded Menace are responsible for the massive Fulfill The Curse on Razorback Records. It's out NOW and it's absolutely frightening.. highly reccomended for fans of Coffins and death-doom in particular. Check out the track "Grasp Of The Beastwoman" from Fulfill The Curse and pray for your own safety that these Finns never make it to the US... it'll be a massacre.

More news on Intronaut, Pelican, The Sword, Krallice, Saint Vitus, Total Fucking Destruction and more as The Week In Metal continues...

Attila Csihar of Mayhem, The Winterdemon (metalnorge)
Attila

Highly influential black metallers Mayhem have announced that they will tour the US in spring of 2009! The 21 date tour will be announced soon, but in the meantime, look for the band to announce a new guitarist to replace departing axe-slinger Blasphemer. Mayhem's Attila Csihar lent his unholy vokills to the new Jarboe record Mahakali due Oct 14th on The End. Skip on down for video of Thurston Moore discussing Mayhem.

Doomriders are currently grinding away at their new album due on Deathwish in 2009! In the meantime, look for the band to hit the Autobahn on a European tour with Disfear & SSS. SSS is currently streaming two new tracks from their upcoming record The Dividing Line. Doomriders recently played Europa.

Metallica is streaming six tracks from Death Magnetic. Check out my review for their new record below.

Guitarist Kris Norris has left Darkest Hour and is "actively pursing some producing routes and any band that might want a guitarist".

Corrupted LIVE (tawaraya)
Corrupted

The extremely elusive Japanese doomers (in fact, the above is one of the only pictures I have ever found of them), Corrupted announced a brief West Coast tour with Asunder, check out the flyer here. Asunder's Works Will Come Undone recently dropped on vinyl via Kreation Records, pick it up here. Corrupted's (current? these guys are elusive I tell ya!) bassist Lowell Isles's old band, YOB recently reformed.

Vikings Amon Amarth are streaming a new track, "Guardians of Asgaard", from their upcoming Twilight Of The Thunder God.

Bloodbath, the death metal supergroup featuring Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth), Anders "Blakkheim" Nyström (Katatonia), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Martin "Axe" Axenrot(ex-Witchery, Opeth), and Per "Sodomizer" Eriksson, will drop their new studio album The Fathomless Mystery on Oct 28th via Peaceville Records. Filled with ""nothing but hateful brutality", check out "Slaughtering The Will To Live" available for download above and stream another track, "Mock The Cross", at their myspace.

Bloodbath's cover art, plus news on Danzig, Celtic Frost, Landmine Marathon, sunn 0))), Necrophagist, Immortal and so much more....
