Angel Olsen at SXSW 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Angel Olsen @ Roulette
Angel Olsen's varied 2014 album goes from somber folk to upbeat indie rock and it's rightfully been appearing on a bunch of year-end lists already. Tonight she plays the first of her three NYC shows on this tour.
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Budos Band, Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires, Naomi Shelton & Gospel Queens @ Apollo Theater
Tonight's the final night of Daptone's three-day holiday extravaganza, the "Super Soul Revue," at the iconic Harlem venue.
The Graveyard Kids, The Brooklyn What, Peter Stampfel, God Tiny, LIAM, Skinnybones @ Aviv
This show is being billed as "A Funeral for Rock N' Roll." Specifically, a New Orleans style funeral. Among the acts playing are psychedelic folk legend Peter Stampfel and punks The Brooklyn What. This might also be a good chance to check out new DIY showspace, Aviv.
Brooklyn Rock Lottery @ Baby's All Right
A bunch of musicians from notable bands will be divvied up into "groups" today, then they'll spend the day writing and rehearsing original songs which they'll then perform at this show with proceeds going to the Harmony Program. Musicians include members of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Parquet Courts, Obits, Beverly, TEEN, Au Revoir Simone, Dismemberment Plan, and more. Sold out.
Philip Glass (The Etudes) @ BAM
Philip Glass' 20-years-in-the-making project is performed in full tonight with help from nine other pianists, including Nico Muhly and Timo Andres.
Cyndi Lauper, 50 Cent, Sufjan Stevens, Natalie Maines, Patty Griffin, Salt-n-Pepa, Liv Warfield, STRFKR, Emily West, Rob Thomas, Emily Haines (of Metric) @ Beacon Theatre
This is Cyndie Lauper's annual 'Home for the Holidays' benefit show, with a star-studded and disparate lineup of performers.
BADBADNOTGOOD, Jerry Paper @ Bowery Ballroom
Jazz/hip hop trio BadBadNotGood caught ears early on thanks to associations with Odd Future, but they've since grown into a group who are notable on their own. Opening tonight's show is Jerry Paper who is on Dustin from Beach Fossils' new label. Sold out.
Peelander Z, Life Size Maps, Hard Nips @ Glasslands
The far-out, always entertaining Peelander-Z headline this show and, as it's their last at the soon-to-close venue, expect stops to be pulled.
Hot Chip (DJ Set), JDH & Dave P @ Good Room
Al & Felix of Hot Chip were just here playing as part of their side project New Build and tonight they'll be spinning tunes at the venue formerly known as Europa.
tUnE-YaRds, Cibo Matto, Beep! @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
tUnE-yArDs dove further into their world of quirky, eccentric pop on this year's Nikki Nack, and Cibo Matto returned with their first album since 1999 which had them still in good form. Tonight's night 3 of their 4-night run at MHOW.
Truthers, Scully, Milk Dick, Rips @ Union Pool
What we've got here is a great lineup of scuzzy, fuzzy garage rock n' roll (and one that seems like it could've been at DbA). Scully features ex members of Splinters, and Milk Dick have a new release out on JEFF the Brotherhood's Infinity Cat label.
Chuck Ragan, Adam Faucett @ Rough Trade
Hot Water Music are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, but co-frontman Chuck Ragan is staying extra busy focusing on his rootsy folk solo project as well. Tonight's show is sold out.
Bongripper, Hasj, Hound, Water Torture @ Saint Vitus
Though they almost did in 2011, Chicago stoner metal greats Bongripper have actually never played NYC, but that will finally change tonight. Not too surprisingly, it's sold out. Also of note is Hound, who feature members of Ted Leo's band The Pharmacists and None More Black.
Lucius, Bahamas, Elaphant @ Terminal 5
Brooklyn's Lucius, featuring lookalike singers Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, have spent much of 2014 on the festival circut, still riding high on 2013's,Wildewoman.
Jacques Greene, Rinsed, Justin Strauss, BOY/FRIEND, THENEWDEAL @ Slake
Jacques Greene hails from Montreal, but his garage-inspired beats sound straight out of the UK. If you haven't heard this year's Phantom Vibrate or After Life After Party EPs, they're worth seeking out.
Ampere, Slingshot Dakota, Petal, Clean Girls @ Suburbia
Pennsylvania DIY pop bands Slingshot Dakota are on tour together which hits NYC tonight for this show. Headlining though, is ex-Orchid hardcore ragers Ampere, which makes for a very diverse (and awesome) night. And it's actually your second chance to catch Ampere today. They play a matinee with Capacities at ABC No Rio this afternoon.
Madball, Turnstile, Death Before Dishonor, Take Offense, Downpresser @ Webster Hall
There's really nowhere besides Webster Hall that NYHC fans should be tonight: Madball shows aren't the rarest thing and they may not have their full classic lineup, but tonight's the 20th anniversary celebration of their debut, Set It Off, so it'll be a special one.
The Futurebirds, Daniel Romano, Ben Miller Band @ Gramercy Theater
It's the fourth annual Ho Ho Ho Down benefit with a folk/country lineup. Especially of note is Canada's Daniel Romano who's melancholic country is great and a nice alternative to, say, the kind of country that was just nominated for a bunch of Grammys.
frnkiero andthe cellabration, Transit, Northern Faces @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Weekends mean Brooklyn Night Bazaar is open, and that means arcade games, drinks, food, record vendors, jewelry vendors and more. Oh and free music, and tonight's got a lineup of melodic punk.
The Scotch Bonnets (ft. HR of Bad Brains), The Far East, Dead Tenants @ Palisades
While Bad Brains' kinda flakey HR is a part of The Scotch Bonnets' show tonight, the DC reggae band is more the outlet for singer/songwriter Kristin Forbes, so take his presence here with that in mind.

Andrew WK at Webster Hall in 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Back before Bamboozle started hitting Asbury Park (or other nearby places in NJ) every spring, the similar Skate and Surf Festival used to go down there, but hasn't been in active in eight years. Following the announcement that there will be no Bamboozle in 2013 (but they say, "keep your eyes peeled for 2014 info"), it was announced that Skate and Surf Fest is being revived this year, and will happen from May 18 to 19 at Plaza Green at iPlay America (110 Schanck Road) in Freehold, NJ.
Though we'd never turn down a solo set by Andrew WK, the rest of the lineup is not one we particularly care about, much like most of Bamboozle's lineup in years past. Other bands playing include Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Saves the Day, Bayside, Into It. Over It., Hopsin, and more. Tickets go on sale Saturday (1/12).
