Delicate Steve at 4Knots Festival 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
Delicate Steve

Popgun Booking is turning four years old and they're celebrating with an anniversary party at their homebase of Glasslands on Saturday (9/29) featuring performances by 8-bit partiers Anamanaguchi and instrumental wonderkind Delicate Steve and DJ sets by True Womanhood and Friendly Ghost. (They also list Mitt Romney as DJing which is probably a joke, but his schedule is open that day.) The show is FREE but you do need to RSVP.

Delicate Steve, who spent most of the summer touring his new album, will be here for CMJ too. He's playing a just-announced My Social List showcase at the Martin Room in Webster Hall on October 16 with Teen Daze, Dent May, Heavenly Beat, Mac Demarco, Bleeding Rainbow, The Young Evils and Grand Resort. Tickets are on sale now.

Anamanaguchi, meanwhile, will be touring in October and November with Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin being the trek's midpoint. All tour dates, as well as a flyer for the Popgun Anniversary party, are below.

no bandana, no shirt either...
Wu Lyf

As MusicSnobbery points out...

"Making their U.S. debut last Friday was the much talked-out and mysterious band out of Manchester, UK, Wu Lyf (World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation). Half of the story is the incredible and evocative songs they've released or teased. With their epic, no-holds art rock and sense of grandeur, they defy comparison to any current band in the U.K. music scene. The other half is the fact that they buck convention by not releasing any information about themselves. They eschew interviews and the standard PR push that is endemic with new bands. Heck, I was chatting with the lead singer before the show and I didn't even know it until the Wise Blood guy pointed him out....

... Their music thrives on screwing with the complacent. Nothing is straight forward in songs like "Lucifer Calling," "Heavy Pop", "Spitting It Concrete Like The Golden Sun God" and "L Y F". The overall feeling is some sort of religious or spiritual upheaval, maybe purging of their demons. Every song has them screaming until their voices cracked.

My surprise is their set was a decent amount of time, a little under an hour....

....Seeing the band was like seeing the movie There Will Be Blood for the first time. I know it's a brilliant experience, but I can't exactly tell you why..."

My thoughts were very much the same after seeing the intense band perform at the BrooklynVegan-presented sold out show at Glasslands on Friday night (same night the Strokes played MSG, but Wu Lyf's 12:30am set time gave some people the chance to do both).

Wu Lyf also played another set at Shea Stadium on Saturday, again with opener Wise Blood who plays again with Zambri at Pianos tonight (4/5).

And Wise Blood was a whole different kind of entertaining as he rapped over live and electro beats, gave shotouts to people he recognized in the crowd, asked for coke and drunkenly climbed to the 2nd level thing in Glasslands and then jumped down (possibly breaking his foot, as he said under his breath before launching into his final song). You can see some of the action in the pictures, which continue below...

Wu Lyf

Advanced tickets for the BrooklynVegan/PopGun-presented U.S. debut of Wu Lyf at Glasslands Friday night are sold out, but there will be limited tickets available at the door, AND Popgun have set up a 2nd Wu Lyf show happening at Shea Stadium on Saturday. Friday's show will be opened by Wise Blood, True Womanhood, and DJ True Panther. Saturday's will feature sets by Total Slacker and Wise Blood.

Braids
Braids

[Braids] singer-guitarist Raphaelle Standell-Preston's voice had largely abandoned her by the time the band hit the stage [on Feb 18th at The Rock N Roll Hotel in DC], turning an elastic, emotive weapon into a meek croak. Early in the set she strained and failed to hit notes normally well within her range and, at one point, simply stopped singing to apologize mid-song.

Her bandmates soldiered on, playing dramatic and surging songs with interwoven melodies and shifting tempos. They are slowly unfolding, cinematic creations that consistently simmer, if rarely explode. Many of them swell and subside over the course of six or seven minutes, like tornado funnels that never wreak complete havoc by touching down.

Baths, the one-man project of baby-faced 21-year-old Los Angeles resident Will Wiesenfeld, opened his headlining set by telling the crowd he was getting over a cold and asked listeners not to hold it against him if he had to pause at some point to blow his nose. No handkerchiefs were necessary, though. Standing behind an array of samplers, keyboards and other electronic gizmos, he played glitchy dance songs with more immediately satisfying payoffs than anything in the preceding set. -[Washington Post]

Both Baths & Braids were battling illness at that DC show and Raphaelle Standell-Preston (Raphie) was still very-noticeably sick the following night at Knitting Factory, but has soldiered on. After a night off, Braids played Glasslands on Tuesday, and then Mercury Lounge again with Baths last night (Wednesday, 2/16). Raphie and Katie (the keyboard player) were still sick, but you wouldn't know it.

True Womanhood and Houses (who replaced Star Slinger) opened the Manhattan show. Houses frontman Dexter (who played second) normally plays with his girlfriend and a drummer, but since they were asked last minute, only he traveled from Chicago. Their album recently came out on Lefse Records.

More dates HERE. More pictures from Mercury Lounge are below.

Gumbowl

Marnie Stern will be one of the bowlers (but not one of the performers) at a Stereogum "Gumbowl" charity event tonight at Brooklyn Bowl. You can't watch her bowl yet, but you can go to the concert afterwards (that she is not playing)....

"While the doors have to be closed during the tournament in order to film it all for charitable posterity -- and be sure we'll present you with the footage -- we're celebrating afterward by throwing open the gates for a FREE CONCERT, headlined by Woods, and featuring an opening set from the 'Gum-beloved rising sextet Effi Briest, DJ magic from Ms. St. Vincent Annie Clark, and loitering by our celebrity bowlers, who may or may not still be wearing the sweet-ass bowling jerseys we're throwing on them. We want you there (if you're 21 or older (sorry, kids!))." - Stereogum
They had an RSVP for the concert part, but now they just say "THERE WILL BE SOME "TICKETS" AT THE DOOR! COME EARLY IF YOU WANT IN. DOORS OPEN AT 9PM". Brooklyn Bowl is a big place. The flyer is below.

Other charity bowlers include The Blow (who has a show coming up at Joe's Pub), Nick Islands Thorburn Diamonds (who has 3 NYC shows coming up), Alan Neon Indian Palomo (who has multiple NYC shows coming), and Tim Les Savy Fav Harrington (who has a scheduled Brooklyn show too). The full list of bowlers is also below.

If you want to catch Marnie Stern play live, her next show will be at Glasslands on Friday, June 18th along with White Hinterland, Anni Rossi, Translations and True Womanhood. It's not free, but you get a discount if you RSVP to that here.

Anni Rossi will also be playing Pianos the night before (6/17).

More info on the Gumbowl and flyers are below...

Northside

"Like last year, everything will be taking place in Williamsburg and Greenpoint because walking long distances is a drag when there are bands to see and beer to drink, we mean seriously. Us here at The L Magazine will be booking a share of shows on our own, but, for a large chunk of the festival, we've once again handed over curatorial control to some of the most tasteful, talented and dedicated folks in New York's independent music scene -- record labels, bloggers, promoters and more -- allowing them to showcase the bands they think you need to hear. The Williamsburg Gallery Association is again on board to highlight special exhibitions and other events at over 25 art galleries in the neighborhood. And to celebrate Northside's second year, we've invited a few of the city's biggest aficionados of independent film to curate four nights of New York-made movies at Brooklyn's new, as-yet-unopened film house-music club-restaurant-bar, indieScreen."
That message from L Magazine refers to the second annual Northside Festival, taking place in Brooklyn from June 24th through the 27th.

Music, art and movies will be happening at "30+ venues" and "dozens of galleries" over the course of four days in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Like SXSW & CMJ, you can buy tickets to individual events, or you can get a badge which gets you in to everything that isn't already at badge-capacity. $50 badges are now on sale to those 21 and over. If you buy a badge, "Arrive to venues early - badgeholders are admitted on a first-come, first-served, one-out, one-in basis."

If you buy a badge you can take your chances at getting into one of the four Northside shows happening at Music Hall of Williamsburg (BrooklynVegan showcase included), Fiery Furnaces at Brooklyn Bowl, and WAVVES & Cloud Nothings at Knitting Factory. TONS more shows TBA, but the initial list of bands that will be playing has been announced (I'm especially excited to see The Wave Pictures, Fucked Up, Liars, Parenthetical Girls and Les Savy Fav on there in addition to what we've previously talked about) (and yes Titus Andronicus is on there). Check it out below...
